Simple, right? But keeping your information private isn’t just about your own choices. It’s about your friends’ choices, too. Results from a study show that, with the development of all kinds of social media, people may need to stop and think about just how much they control their personal information, and where the boundaries of their privacy are. When someone joins a social network, the first order of business is, of course, to find friends. To help the users to find their friends, many apps offer to import contact list(导入联系人清单)from someone’s phone or e-mail or Facebook, to find matches with people already in the network.“sharing those contact lists seems harmless,” says David Garcia, a computational social scientist at the Complexity Science Hub Vienna in Austria. “People giving contact lists, they’re not doing anything wrong.” he says. “You are their friend. You give them the e-mail address and phone number.” most of the time, you probably want to stay in touch with the person, possibly even via the social media site. But the social network then has that information--whether or not the owner of it wants it to be shared.Social platforms’ ability to collect information into what are called shadow profiles first came to light with a Facebook bug in 2013. The bug accidentally shared the e-mail addresses and phone numbers of some 6 billion users with all of their friends, even when the information was public.Facebook immediately corrected the mistakes. But later, some users noticed that the phone numbers on their Facebook profiles had still been filled in---even though they had not given Facebook their digits. Instead, Facebook had collected the numbers from the contact lists innocently provided by their friends, and filled in the missing information for them. A shadow profile had become reality. It’s no surprise that a social platform could take names, e-mail addresses and phone numbers and match them up with other people on the same platform. But Garcia wondered if these shadow profiles could be extended to people not on the social platform at all.He turned to a social network called Friendster which was closed up in 2015. Friendster was launched in 2002. In 2008, the social site attracted more than 115 million users. But by 2009 people began to jump ship for other sites, and finally Friendster closed for good. However, by using theInternet Archive--a nonprofit library, Garcia still found lots of users’ information about Friendster.“ You are not in full control of your privacy,” he concludes. If your friend is on a social platform, so are you. And you don’t have a choice in the matter. Garcia published his findings August 4 in Science Advance.36.The apps help us to find friends in the following ways EXCEPT __________.A.through phone numbersB. through e-mailC. through FacebookD. through ID number37. The cashier is tapping her fingers impatiently on the counter.47 But the good news is: scientists have thought of a way to make queues shorter and paying for thing easier. They have invented an eye scanner. In the future, when you pay for food in the supermarket, an eye scanner will take a picture of your eyes and a computer will identify you. 48 .Students at Venerable Bede School, England, have already got an eye scanner in their cafeteria. After the students choose the food they want, the scanner looks for their information and sends a list of food to their parents. 49 Also, parents pay for the meals at the end of the week, so the students don’t have to take money to school and wait in long queues to pay their lunch. If all shops had eye scanners, shopping would be easier. 50 So, it seems that it will be a while before most of us got our eyes scanned at the cashier.四、写作第一节首字母51.You can’t e________ your parents to do everything for you. She hasn't started kindergarten (幼儿园)yet, but she has an IQ above 160, which is well above the average (一般的)people's IQ.So, she has become the youngest member of Mensa, the largest and oldest high IQ society in the world. Mensa is an international club whose members have an IQ score in the top 2% of the world. Currently, Mensa has 3, 300 members under the age of 18 in the U.S. Alexis is one of them. The average people generally have an IQ score of 100 points, but Martin scored 160points, the highest score on the test. The doctors who tested Alexis said she scored so high that they couldn't even work out her IQ exactly. They think she is even smarter than 99.9% of the world population. Actually, she matched the IQs of talents like Albert Einstein, Stephen Hawking and Bill Gates.Ian Martin, Alexis' father, said his daughter showed signs of some unique abilities at the age of one and she began reading books for pupils when she was just two years old. Now at the age of three, Alexis is reading on a fifth grade level."From 12 months old, when we were driving around in the car and she would repeat her bedtime stories from the night before, " he said. "She didn't just repeat them. She could remember every word of them exactly."Ian Martin thinks his daughter also stands out when it comes to learning new languages."Anytime she learns a word and just picks it up through anything, she never ever uses it in the incorrect situation, ever, " Ian said. While Alexis's parents are proud that their three-year-old daughter has become a member in Mensa, they are also aware of the price that comes with every gift. The doctors say Alexis should never attend a normal school and children with her level of intelligence (智力)often experience high anxiety (焦虑)unless they're around similarly gifted boys and girls. Her parents decide to follow the advice and try to look for proper ways to help her get involved into society.4Mensa only accepts .(1)A.B.C.D.teenagers under 18 in the U.S.people with IQs above 160 in the U.S.talents in the world like Albert Einsteinpeople with IQs in the top 2% of the worldA.getting higher through trainingB.beyond the limit of the IQ testC.above the IQ of Stephen HawkingD.growing too fast to get an exact scoreFrom the passage, we know that Alexis' IQ is .(2)A.B.C.D.One of Alexis' special abilities is that .she could read stories at the age of oneshe could write books for pupils at the age of twoshe can remember every word of what her parents saidshe can learn new words quickly and use them properly(3)A.B.C.D.What can we learn from the last paragraph?Alexis is sure to experience anxiety in the future.Alexis' parents can't afford the gifts that she chooses.Alexis' parents won't be able to find her a normal school.Alexis may feel it hard to get along with the average people.(4)A.B.C.D.Whar's the best title of this passage? The High Intelligence Club-MensaAlexis Martin—The Youngest Mensa MemberAlexis Martin—The Cleverest GirlAlexis Martin—Too Clever to Get into Society(5)For those who haven't heard of it, the Apple watch is the latestinvention from the creators of the iPhone and Apple Mac. As the namesuggests, this creation is a device (装置)designed to tell us the time. This is Apple, however, and an Apple watch is never just a watch. Notonly does it show us the time, but it also acts as a fitness monitor and amessaging device that can be connected with an iPhone. Is this a smart invention or has technology gone too far? While theApple watch is stylish in appearance, I can't help but question certain aspects (方面)of the new device. Is it a positive thing to be able to receive messages through a watch, or is this another way of letting technology upset our social lives? Thanks to the invention of the smart watch, we will no longer have to reach for our phones to check our messages. Imagine the possible results. A group of friends sitting at a table in a restaurant will overlook each other as everyone will be too busy watching their wrists in 5expectation of a new message. Students will have a way of checking their inbox during school, despite the fact that using mobile phones is not allowed in class. The list goes on. Although smart watches may make communicating through technology easier, it seems that using them could actually hinder face to face communication.Much like a phone, the watch would also need to be charged (充电)every day. This is yet another aspect of the device which sets it apart from any "normal" watch. If, like me, you struggle when remembering to put your phone on charge, this is not necessarily a positive thing.I do have to agree, however, the watch has some interesting and purposeful functions (功能). As a fitness monitor, the device can be used to create and record exercise activities. This could be of particular interest to outdoor fans. While there are several existing Android Apps that can already do this, I can see that the Apple watch would be a more convenient way of exercising without a mobile phone. The question remains, however, is the price worth the benefits? While there are clearly both advantages and disadvantages when it comes to Apple's latest invention, I personally like my single-purpose watch that simply tells me the time! What about you? Would you be interested in having a smart watch?A.B.C.D.Thanks to the invention of the Apple watch, .students don't use computers in classmobile phones don't need to be chargedmessages can be checked without phonesoutdoor activities have become more popular(1)A.make up B.hold back C.depend on D.look after The underlined word "hinder " in Paragraph 3 probably means " " .(2)A.B.C.D.From the passage, we can learn that the writer .worries about the safety of the smart watchthinks highly of the progress of technologyintroduces the newest kind of smart phonesprefers single-purpose watches that tell the time(3)A.B.C.D.What is probably the best title for this passage? The Apple Watch: The Latest InventionThe Apple Watch: Smart and FashionableThe Apple Watch: Has Technology Gone Too Far?The Apple Watch: A Convenient Way to Exercise?(4)A.He is interested in having one.B.He thinks it will upset our social life.C.He prefers a simple watch to it.D.He hates it.What's the writer's opinion about Apple watch?(5)Off the Beaten Cart PathThe best-selling travel book which includes over 200 new places of interest, over 200 new full-color photographs, and all-new, up-to-date maps. There was not one night that I don't remember Mom reading me a storybook by my bedside. I was extremely attracted by the way the words sounded.I always wanted to know what my mom was reading. Hearing Mom say, "I can't believe what's printed in the newspaper this morning, " made me want to grab it out of her hands and read it myself. I wanted to be like my mom and know all of the things she knew. So I carried around a book, and each night, just to be like her, I would pretend to be reading. This is how everyone learned to read. We would start off with sentences, then paragraphs and then stories. It seemed an unending journey, but even as a six-year-old girl I realized that knowing how to read could open many doors. When Mom said, "The B-I-S-C-U-I-T is hidden on the top shelf, " I knew where the biscuit was. My progress in reading raised my curiosity, and I wanted to know everything. I often found myself telling my mom to drive more slowly so that I could read all of the road signs we passed. Most of my reading through primary, middle and high school was factual reading. I read for knowledge and to make A's on my tests. Sometimes I would read a novel that was assigned by teachers, but I didn't enjoy this type of reading. I liked facts, things that are concrete (具体的).But I thought anything abstract left too much room for argument.Yet, now that I'm growing and the world I once knew as being so simple is becoming more difficult to understand, I find myself needing a way to escape. By opening a novel, I can leave behind my burdens and enter into a wonderful and mysterious world where I am now a new character. In these worlds I can become anyone. I don't have to write down what happened or what skill the author was using when he or she wrote this. I just read to relax. We're taught to read because it's necessary for much of human understanding. Reading is an important part of my life. Reading satisfies my desire to keep learning. And I've found that the possibilities that lie within books are limitless.A.B.C.D.Why did the author want to grab the newspaper out of Mom's hands? She wanted to stop Mom from reading. She wanted Mom to read the news to her.She really wanted to know what had happened. She couldn't wait to pull the newspaper into pieces.(1)A.B.C.D.According to Paragraph 3, the author's reading road signs shows .her wish to develop her reading ability and speaking skills her growing desire to know the world around her her special way to locate herselfher effort to remind Mom to follow traffic rules (2)A.What was the author's view on factual reading? It would allow much room for free thinking.(3)B.C.D.It would help form a serious attitude to life.It would help her improve test-taking skills. It would provide true and objective information.A.develop her love for learningB.get away from a confusing worldC.explore a fantasy landD.learn about the adult communityNowadays the author considers novel reading as a way to .(4)A.Reading Makes a Full Man B.Growing Up with Reading C.The Magic of ReadingD.The Pleasure of ReadingWhat would be the best title for the passage?(5)(本大题共5小题,每小题1分,共5分)A.B.Are you tired of feeling like you don't know what people are talking about? ButMilannow wants to change it.The city has an ambitious plan to plant 3 million new trees by 2030 - a move that experts say could offer relief from the city's hot weather. Some projects have already contributed to environmental improvements. Architect Stefano Boeri’s Vertical Forest residential (居民的) tower, completed in 2014, aims to improve not only air quality but the quality of life for Milan residents. Boeri created a smallisland of greenery in the heart ofMilan, filling every balcony with plants that absorb carbon dioxide.“I think forestation is one of the best chances that we have today. It is one of the most effective ways we have to fight climate change, because everyone can plant trees, Boeri said.Damiano Di Simine, a member of the environmental group Legambiente , said the greenMilanproject will lower temperatures in a city where the nighttime temperature can be 6 degrees Celsius higher than in the surrounding area. City show thatMilanexperiences 35 hot nights a year. Because the city lies close to theAlps, Milin gets very little wind to lower the city's temperatures. "Planting trees will help this," Di said.TheVerticalForesthas attracted more than 20 species of birds. And the shade provided by the 800 trees and 15,000 plants means that residents rarely have to put on air conditioning, even in hot summers.TheVerticalForest's total greenery- can absorb 30 metric tons of carbon dioxide every year. The presence of green trees has a very important effect on people's health and psychological state, as has already been proved.4. What change doesMilanplan to make?A. Planting more trees.B. The positive effect of theVerticalForestproject.CThere are similarities and differences between high school life and college life. For one thing, there are several similarities between high school life and collegelife. First, the most important task in high school and college is both studying. Studying is the most important as a student. Second, we need a goal to fight for in both high school life and college life. To lead a meaningful life, we have to set up a goal to achieve. For another, there are also some differences between high school life and college life. First, our studying is also the biggest difference. In high school, we are required to follow our teachers' steps and finish theirassignmentsevery day. While in college, there are no teachers giving such detailed requirements to us and we can choose study or not according to our own willing. What and how to study totally depends on us. Therefore, the ability of self-control is very important in college life. Second, the flexibility (灵活性) of time is another difference. In high school, we have no much leisure except for our time of study. However, in college, we have much controlled by ourselves except the time of classes. And we have more time to do what we like. Finally, college lifeis much more various and richer. Besides study, we can attend many other activities, which make our college life more wonderful. In brief, there are both similarities and differences between high school life and college life. However, no matter we are in which period, we need to make full use of every day so that we will never feel regretful.8. Why do students need a goal to fight in high school and college?A. To enter a good college.B. To avoid living a meaningless life.C. To develop the ability of control.D. To meet their parents’ satisfaction.9. What does the underlined word “assignments” in paragraph 3 probably mean?A. Projects.B. Tasks.C. Goals.D. Dreams.10. Which is the correct structure of the passage?A. ①-②③-④B. ①②-③-④C. ①-②③④D.①②-③④11. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?A. College LifeB. High School LifeC. High School and CollegeD. High School Life and College LifeDNot long after the first fitness magazine was published, a list probably followed soon after, ranking the best fitness equipment. This tradition has continued, with the implied message: usethisand exercise willbe yours. And that's part of the problem, says Dr. Lieberman, a professor of Harvard University. There isn't one “best” anything to achieve fitness. Besides, people understand exercise is good for them. Knowledge about exercise still doesn't motivate. Before you can answer why, it helps to look at history. Before the Industrial Revolution, people fetched water and walked up stairs because they had to. But then technology made life and work easier. Exercise has become something that people have to carve out time for. “It's a fundamental instinct to avoid physical activity when it's neither necessary nor rewarding,” he says.It would seem like being healthy would qualify as necessary, but a doctor's prescription to exercise “can make it like taking cod liver oil,” Lieberman says. “Sometimes it works, but more often than not, it doesn't. And it's still coming across as an order, and “not having a heart attack in five years is not an immediate reward,” says Dr. Beth Frates, assistant professor at Harvard Medical School.People might not want to exercise because it's never been enjoyable. Most of us probably have memories of gym class, not being picked for a team, or being in a fitness center that's filled with in-shape people. The majority don't feel excited. They feel that exercise isn't for them, but it can be. Coaching people in an empowering and motivating way can work much better than ordering someone to exercise. It starts with an expanded definition of what counts as exercise, and an injection of what's rarely used to describe exercise, but is certainly allowed: namely, fun.12. What does the underlined “this” in paragraph 1 refer to?A. The magazine.B. The tradition.C. The equipment.D. The message.13. What can we infer about technology?A. It improves life quality.B. It saves people's time.C. It drives social progress.D. It makes exercise less likely.14. Why does the author mention “cod liver oil” in paragraph 4?A. To attach importance to health.B. To present a doctor's prescription.C. To explain exercise is considered inessential.D. To introduce the latest medical application.15. What is the main idea of the last paragraph?A. Exercise should be made more joyful.B. It's more fun to work out with others.C. We may encounter bad workout experiences.D. Orders work well to motivate people to exercise.第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。

Iceland in the North Atlantic Ocean is a paradise (乐园) for all those who want to see the northern lights, experience cold weather conditions and put themselves in geothermal (地热的) baths while the snow is falling on their head. The best way to move around Iceland is with a rental car. Distances are huge and public transport in winter is not really common out of the major towns. As we wanted to be even more convenient we decided to rent a small camper (野营车). Sleeping and cooking in a camper saved us a lot of driving, money and gave us the chance tobe always in the right place at the right time. There were also no locals and in many cases no tourist facilities (设备). For us, as we slept in a camper, it was easier. But for tourists traveling by normal cars it is necessary to check the opening times ofhotels and restaurants as many of them run just from June to September. It is amazing to experience how the weather is changing in Iceland. Yet gold mining and coca farming have dealt a blow to its ecosystem. To limit additional development in the San Lucas area, the group helps coffee growers by linking them with processors from around the country.Colombia has more different kinds of living things than any other country except neighboring Brazil. In 2016, the Colombian government signed a peace deal with the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia ending years of civil war. As a result, more land became accessible for use, with deforestation(毁林) coming along. Government information shows that in 2017, almost 220,000 hectares of forest were destroyed compared to around 124,000 hectares in 2015.To date, the project includes 10 families who farm 400 hectares of coffee plants, which costs about $77,000 dollars a year. WebConserva hopes that, in time, 200 families will be included. At that level, 20,000 hectares of untouched forest could be protected. In San Lucas, the families promise not to cut down trees to expand their crops or to hunt wild animals from the forests. In return, they receive $ 250 to $ 300 per 125 kilograms of coffee,an enviable amount there. Arcadio Barajas is among those taking part. His new coffee plantation(种植园) makes a barrier between cattle farms and forests where wild animals like the jaguar live and hunt. In this way, he doesn't have to kill wild animals to protect his cattle.Barajas said that pulling down the forest to plant coca and killing wildlife were against his will. Now he feels that growing coffee lets him be astewardof the land. "I'm taking care of the environment, the forest and the animals," he said.8. Why does WebConserva set up the project?A. Sometimes, cars with energetic young tourists passed by. And then we heard a motorcycle in the distance. The driver of the motorcycle, who wore dirty clothes, parked behind our cars. Surprisingly, he just took a picture of us, handed back my camera and rode off before we could express our gratitude. The photo he took is one of the most valuable and prized of our trip.I learned my lesson somewhere I least expected it. We should never judge a man by his appearance. Portraits are works of art that engage with ideas of identity rather than just a likeness. These concepts of identity involve social rank, gender, age, profession, character of the subject, etc. It is impossible to copy all the aspects of identity. Therefore, portraits reflect only certain qualities of subjects. Portrait art has also undergone significant shifts in artistic practice. The majority of portraits are the outcome of current artistic fashions and favored styles. Therefore, portrait art is an art category providing various engagement with social, psychological, and artistic practices and expectations.Since portraits are different from other art categories, they are worthy of separate study. During their production, portraits require the presence of a specific person, or an image of the individual. In many instances, the production of portraiture has required sittings, which result in interaction between the subject(s) and theartist throughout the creation of the work. In certain instances, portrait artists depended on a combination of different involvement with their subjects. If the sitter can’t sit in the studio regularly, portraitists could use his or her photographs. InEurope, during the seventeenth and eighteenth century, the sitting time was sometimes decreased by focusing only on the head. Theoretically, portraitists could work from impressions or memories when creating a painting, but this rarely occurred according to documented records. Nonetheless, whether the work is based on model sittings, copying a photograph, or using memory, the process of painting a portrait is linked with the model’s attendance.Furthermore, portrait painting can be distinguished from other artistic categories by its connection with appearance, or likeness. As such, the art of portrait painting got a reputation for imitation instead of for artistic innovation. Based on Renaissance art theory, portraiture was related to the level of a mechanical exercise as opposed to a fine art. Michelangelo’s well-known protest against portraits is only one example. During the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, the attitude to portraiture was critical. Even so, artists from around the globe persisted in painting portraits despite their theoretical objections. Picasso, for example, became widely-known forcubist still-life painting(立体派静物画) early in his career, but some of his early experiments in this new style were his portraits of art dealers.12. What does paragraph 1 mainly tell us?A. The changing definition of portraiture reflects shifting attitudes to it.B. Most portraits reflect artistic fashions and favored styles when created.C. Portraiture is a more complex art form than is defined in a dictionary.D. Portrait art shouldn’t be seen as a distinct art category for its complexity.13. Which of the following is a characteristic of portraiture mentioned in paragraph 2?A. Portraiture typically takes much less time than other art forms.B. Portraiture often requires frequent cooperation between artists.C. Portraits show models in a more accurate way than other art forms.D. Portraits generally involve interaction between subjects and artists.14. According to paragraph 2, during portraits’ production, artists __________.A. based their work on the subjects’ attendanceB. preferred models’ photographs to their presenceC. were more willing to use impressions or memoriesD. reduced sitting time to concentrate on a sitter’s head15. Picasso is chosen as an example by the author because he __________.A. altered the way other artists felt about portrait artB. created portraits in spite of his objection to portrait artC. depended on portrait art to establish a higher reputationD. had fewer theoretical objections to portraitures than others第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。

In the US, a maverick is often admired for his or her free spirit, although others who belong to the maverick’s group may not like the maverick’s independent ways. But where did the word “maverick” come from?Early in the 1800s, a man named Samuel Augustus Maverick settled down in Texas, which was a place of wide-open land, rich soil, cattle ranches(牛场) and cowboys. As the years passed, Mr. Maverick increased his property(财产) in Texas. Before long, he owned huge pieces of land that were good for raising cattle. But he had no cattle. He wasn’t a rancher. One day, a man came to Samuel Maverick to pay him an old debt. But the man didn’t have enough money. So he offered Mr. Maverick 400 head of cattle. Mr. Maverick accepted them, but he didn’t really want them. He simply put the cattle on his land to eat and care for themselves. It was not long before the cows reproduced(繁殖). The calves grew and had more calves. Soon, hundreds of cows and calves moved freely across Samuel Maverick’s land. They also moved across the land of nearby ranch owners. It was a tradition among ranchers in the West to put a mark of ownership on newborn calves. They burned the name of their ranch into the animal’s skin with a hot iron. The iron made a clear mark called a “brand”. Brands allowed ranchers to easily see who owned which cattle.Samuel Maverick refused to brand his calves. “Why should I?” he asked. If all the other cattle owners branded theirs, then those without a brand belonged to him.And this is how the word “maverick” entered the American language. It meant a calf without a brand. As time passed, the word “maverick” took on a wider meaning. It came to mean a person who was too independent to follow even his or her own group.4. Hearing Mom say, “I can't believe what'sprinted in the newspaper this morning,” made me want to grab it out of her hands and read it myself. When Mom said, “The B-S-C-U-I-T is hidden on the top shelf,” I knew where the biscuit was. My progress in reading raised my curiosity, and I wanted to know everything. I often found myself telling my mom to drive more slowly so that I could read all of the road signs we passed. Most of my reading through primary, middle and high school was factual reading.1 read for knowledge and to make A's on my tests. Sometimes I would read a novel that was assigned by teachers, but I didn't enjoy this type of reading. I liked facts, things that are concrete (具体的) because I thought anything abstract left too much room for argument.Yet, now that I'm growing and the world I once knew as being so simple is becoming more difficult to understand, I find myself needing a way to escape. By opening a novel, I can leave behind my burdens and enter into a wonderful and mysterious world where I am now a new character. In these worlds I can become anyone.I don't have to write down what happened or what skill the author was using when he or she wrote this. I just read to relax. We're taught to read because it's necessary for much of human understanding.Reading is an important part of my life. Reading satisfies my desire to keep learning. And I've found that the possibilities that lie within books are limitless.41. Why did the author want to grab the newspaper out of Mom's hands?A.
