Charles John Huffam Dickens (7 February 1812 – 9 June 1870) was an English
writer and social critic. He created some of the world's most memorable fictional
characters and is generally regarded as the greatest novelist of the Victorian period. During
his life, his works enjoyed unprecedented fame, and by the twentieth century his literary
genius was broadly acknowledged by critics and scholars. His novels and short stories
continue to be widely popular.
Born in Portsmouth, England, Dickens left school to work in a factory after his father
was thrown into debtors' prison. Although he had little formal education, his early
impoverishment drove him to succeed. Over his career he edited a weekly journal for 20

In 1812, the year Charles Dickens was born, there were 66 novels published in Britain.

People had been writing novels for a century-most experts date the first novel to
Robinson Crusoe in 1719-but nobody wanted to do it professionally.
The steam-powered printing press was still in its early stages; the literacy rate in England was under 50%.
Many works of fiction appeared without the names of the authors, often with something like "By a lady."
Novels, for the most part, were looked upon as silly, immoral, or just plain bad.
In 1870, when Dickens died, the world mourned him as its first professional writer and

Oliver Twist
Charles Dickens, the greatest representative of English critical realism, was born in
1812 at England. He is regarded as the “king of the novel in British literature”. And he
has many popular works, such as: Oliver Twist, A Tale Of Two Cities, Great
Expectation and so on.
And now what I want to introduce to you is one of his most famous books-Oliver
Twist.
Oliver Twist was written in 1838. The novel was set in the foggy city——London. It
tells us a story about an orphan whose name is Oliver. Oliver without parents grow up
in an orphanage, he lives a turbulent life and has experienced many difficulties in the
world: apprenticeship, hard fleeing, into a den of thieves, forced to live with the
assailants.
From this book we can see the poor boy Oliver has a bitter childhood: terrible living
