• A number of writers have raised questions about the desirability of faster economic growth as an end in itself, at least in the wealthier industrialized countries. • 1) Literal translation • a. Literal translation takes sentences as its basic units and the whole text into consideration at the same time in the course of translation. 以句为本，兼顾全篇 • e.g. He walked at the head of the funeral procession and every now and then wiped his crocodile tears with a big hankerchief. • 假惺惺的/鳄鱼眼泪

c. Advantages of LT: • i) Being faithful to the original in ideological content • ii) Reflecting the scene and flavour of the foreign country concerned • iii) Absorbing new ways of expression • When is LT employed? • LT is regarded as the primary method of translation

Functions of FT • FT is regarded as the secondary or supplementary method of translation. • Advice: • Try to avoid random translation when FT is used. • e.g. 寄人篱下 • to live under one’s fence? • To live under subjugation • That’s all Greek to me. • It goes very much against the grain with me that the name of the witness should be suppressed.

• b) LT strives to reproduce both ideological content and style of the entire literary work and retain as much as possible the figures of speech and such main sentence structures as SV, SVP, SVO SVoO, SVOC. • e.g. The battle-scarred old communists who have once made stormy revolution unfold a passionate blueprint today for a modern and prosperous China.

• “I’ve been rich and I’ve been poor—and I can tell you, rich is better,” a noted stage personality is said to have told an interviewer, and most people seem to have the same attitude about the economy as a whole. To those who hold this belief, a healthy economy is one that is capable of turning out vast quantities of shoes, food, cars, and TV sets.
