I was afraid I just couldn't hide my excitement as it had been five years since I had been to the zoo. I was especi ally excited about getting to see the penguin exhibit that had b een completed since my last visit. I thought it would be just as magical as it was the last time. The Tulsa Zoo is located on Mohawk Park, and covers 84 acres, making it the third largest zoo in the US. The zoo has several highlights, but I have to admit that I found myself rather disappointed. Th e maintenance is deeply lacking, and most of the exhibits, landscaping, etc. looked like it had not been updated or well kept. Unfortun ately, their polar bear died a short time ago. The strangest attraction was the missing-in-action jaguar(美洲虎).We spent several minutes searching for the animal wit hout any luck. In most cases the zoo was good about putting up a sign if the animal was no longer there or was moved to a different location, but it was a different case with the jaguar and likewise the kan garoo.Almost all of the hands-on equipment in the elephant encounter was broken and no lo nger working. Although the zoo did put up signs as an apolog y,it continued to add to the feeling that the zoo is approaching d eath. The one exhibit that did not fail to impress me were the African Penguins. Their habitat was well built. The lion, bear, and tiger were also easy to watch. A favorite among the kids was clearly the monkeys who were very active and eager to p ut on a show. The Tropical Rainforest did a very good job creating a special atmosphere. The cafe served very good food and had lovely i ndoor and outdoor areas for eating. They are currently re-designing the Sea Lion exhibit,so the Sea Lions were not available for viewing while we were there. All things considered, the Tulsa Zoo is still the best zoo in our area, but I would only award it three out of five stars.21.Seeing several highlights in the Tulsa Zoo,the author ______.A.felt very excited B.was a little frightened C.was not satisfied with them D.thought it was worth seeing22.Why did the author think it was a different case with the j aguar?A.Because the jaguar was friendly to the kangaroo and visit ors.B.Because the zoo didn't use a sign to show if the jaguar wa s there.C.Because the jaguar is very dangerous compared with oth er animals.D.Because the jaguar had disappeared when the author got there.23.What can be concluded from this passage?A.The Tulsa Zoo will be expanded to become the largest zo o in the US.B.The author intended to visit the Sea Lion exhibit before go ing there.C.The author felt that the Tulsa Zoo will close soon. D.The Tulsa Zoo was very popular when the author was you ng.24.What does the author think of the Tulsa Zoo in general? A.She thinks nothing of it.B.It is the best zoo in the US.C.She thinks very poorly of it.D.It is a first class zoo in her area.BPeoplePeople is America’s No.1 magazine about fascinating people. 2018届高三第一次月考英语试卷I、听力部分:无II、阅读理解(本大题共15小题,共30.0分)ANoad was a tall, handsome 23-year-old Balinese man who was in love with one girl but expected t o marry another. His stepmother had arranged everything – h e would wed a distant relation and bring the two families close r together. Noad had two choices. He could either marry the g irl he did not love, or he could go against the wishes of parent s and be expelled from his village. Actually he had another ch oice, one which none of his family foresaw. One day his friend s found him slumped in a comma on his bed after he had con sumed two litres of a powerful insecticide. For more than 60 years the tropical Indonesian island of Bali has been portrayed to the outside world as a heavenly paradi se where a strong culture and sense of community protect its i nhabitants from the rigors of the modern world.Itis an image s upported by many millions of dollars from the international hot el community which provides luxury accommodation and facili ties for nearly a million foreign visitors now travelling annuallyto the holiday island.Yet behind the marketing hype lies another story – one which exists in stark contrast to the sun, sand and sea “dream”. The truth is that the lives of Bali’s 2.7 million local inhabitants are o ften marked by poverty, suffering and family conflict. Ketut is a 22-year-old maid who works part-time for an expatriate(侨民) resident in Ubud, in the centre of the island. Her husband works as a driver for a white-water rafting company which provides day trips to tourists. “S ometimes I have no money for my baby because my husband gambles all his wages.” The husband’s father, unfamiliar with Western support systems, combats his son’s behavior by call ing in the dukun, a spiritual “healer” who makes offerings to th e “bad” spirits at play in his mind.21.You would expect to find this passage in _______________ _.A . an advertisementB .a newspaperC .a travel brochureD .a book22.It can be inferred from paragraph 1 that the third choice th at Noad’s family failed to foresee is that ____________.A. he fell into sleepB .he went against their wishes and left homeC .he started to take drugsD .he committed suicide23.In paragraph 2 “it” refers to ______.A .strong cultureB .sense of communityC . the modern worldD .heavenly paradiseBIncreasingly, Americans are becoming their own doctors, by g oing online to diagnose their symptoms, order home health te sts or medical devices, or even self-treat their illnesses with drugs from Internet pharmacies(药店). Some avoid doctors because of the high cost of medical c are, especially if they lack health insurance. Or they may stay because they find it embarrassing to discuss their weight, alco hol consumption or couch potato habits. Patients may also fe ar what they might learn about their health, or they distrust ph ysicians because of negative experiences in the past. But pla ying doctor can also be a deadly game.Every day, more than six million Americans turn to the Interne t for medical answers – most of them aren’t nearly skeptical e nough of what they find. A 2002 survey by the Pew Internet & American Life Project found that 72 percent of those surveyed believe all or most of what they read on health websites. The y shouldn’t. Look up “headache”, and the chances of finding r eliable and complete information, free from a motivation for commercial gain, are only one in ten, reports an April 2005 Brow n Medical School study. Of the 169 websites the researchers rated, only 16 scored as “high quality”. Recent studies found f aulty facts about all sorts of other disorders, causing one rese arch team to warn that a large amount of incomplete, inaccura te and even dangerous information exists on the Internet. The problem is most people don’t know the safe way to surf th e Web. “They use a search engine like Google, get 18 trillion choices and start clicking. But that’s risky, because almost an ybody can put up a site that looks authoritative(权威的), so it’d hard to know if what you’re reading is reasonable o r not,” says Dr. Sarah Bass from the National Cancer Institute.24.According to the text, an increasing number of American _ ____.A . turn to Internet pharmacies for helpB . are suffering from mental disordersC .like to play deadly games with doctorsD .are skeptical about surfing medical websites25.Some Americans stay away from doctors because they __ ___.A .find medical devices easy to operateB .prefer to be diagnosed online by doctorsC .are afraid to misuse their health insuranceD .are afraid to face the truth of their health26.According to the study of Brown Medical School, ______.A .more than 6 million Americans distrust doctorsB .only 1/10 of medical websites aim to make a profitC .72percentof health websites offer incomplete and faulty fac tsD .about 10 percent of the websites surveyed are of high quali ty27.Which of the following is the author’s main argument?A .It’s cheap to self-treat your own illness.B .It’s embarrassing to discuss your bad habits.C. It’s dangerous to be your own doctorD .It’s .reasonable to put up a medical websiteCThe Israeli farmers who pioneered the revolutionary technolog y known as drip irrigation weren’t trying to solve one of the wo rld’s most urgent problems. They were just trying to survive .They lived in the desert, and they didn’t have enough water to grow their crops. In its simplest form, it was little more than a pipe with holes in it. But behind each hole was a hi-tech dripper that let out just the right amount of water. Snaked along a row of crops so that the holes were positioned directly above the roots, the pipe could direct each precious drop of water directly to the plants, getting a bigger harvest while usin g a very small amount of the water.Over time, the farmers improved upon the technology, perfecti ng the drippers that regulated the flow of water, and connectin g the pipelines to computers that could determine exactly how much water each plant needed and when.If the global population kept growing, the rest of the world wou ld increasingly resemble their little community in the desert. S o they began selling their irrigation systems in other parts of t he world, eventually expanding to more than 110 countries. Netafirm, th e company says it’s lifting people out of poverty and conservin g water at a time when the importance of doing so has never been clearer. The mass adoption of drip irrigation won’t save the world by it self. To avoid the coming catastrophe, nearly everybody will, i n some way, have to do more with less, perhaps through acce pting and using other new technologies. Regardless of the warning of firemen, the residents wouldn’t move out because they were poor and had nowhere to go.One night, the building was on fire. The residents began to run for their lives. When half of the population had got themselves out, the wooden staircases broke down. The remaining residents rushed to the roof of the third floor, which had not been touched by the flames yet, waiting for the firemen to rescue them. Firemen did arrive in a short while. But the fire engines and ladders could not reach the building as the alley was too narrow to allow the passage. The situation was critical, since the fire might burn the roof at any moment. The firemen placed a few cushions on the floor, and got some quilts from the nearby houses to add to the pile. Then they asked the people on the burning building to jump on the pile after they had shown how. A man jumped down, bottom touching the pile, uninjured. Another person jumped down, uninjured... They jumped one after another, all safe. Finally, Singermary became the only remaining one on the roof, hesitating while the fire was swallowing the roof soon. People shouted: “Jump, jump!” Singermary jumped, but she jumped head down with open arms. People were amazed and greatly shocked. How could she do such a jump? It was a suicide gesture! Fortunately, the cushions were very thick. She did not die, but injured seriously, saying with what strength she got: “Please take me to hospital!” She was pregnant, and she had jumped head down in order to keep the child safe. That was mother’s love! People were deeply moved.24. When did the wooden staircase break down?A. After half of the residents ran out.B. Before the residents discovered the fire.C. Immediately the firemen arrived.D. The moment the fire started.25. Why couldn’t the firemen put out the fire?A. The cushions blocked the way.B. The fire engines were too old.C. The building was made of wood.D. The alley was not wide enough.26. Why did Singermary jump in a different way?A. To reduce the danger.B. To cover her fright.C. To protect her child.D. To shock her neighbours.27. What would be the best title for the passage?A. Harmony of NeighbourhoodB. Mother’s LoveC. Heroic FiremenD. An Urgent RescueCA small robot may help children who are recovering from a long-term illness in the hospital or at home. These children may feel separated from their friends and classmates. Therobot takes their place at school. Through the robot, the children can hear their teachers and friends. They can also take part in class from wherever they are recovering.Anyone who has had a long-term illness knows that recovering at h ome can be lonely. This can be especially true of children. They may feel left out. Now, these children may have a high-tech friend to help feel less alone. And that friend is a robot called AV1. AV1 goes to school for a child who is homebound while recovering from a long-term illness. And the child’s school friends must help. They carry the robot between classes and place the robot on the child’s desk.A Norwegian company called No Isolation created the robot. The co-founders of No Isolation are Karen Dolva and Marius Aabel. Dolva explains how the robot AV1 works. She says from home the child uses a tablet or phone to start the robot. Then they use the same device to control the robot’s movements. At school the robot becomes the eyes, ears and voice of the child. The child can take part in classroom activities from wherever they are recovering—whether at home or from a hospital bed. The robot is equipped with speakers, microphones and cameras that make communication easy. It was designed to be tough. It is water resistant and can take a fall from a desk without damage.Inside AV1 there is a small computer connected to a 4G network. A small camera hooked up to a small computer could do the job. But that would not be the same. AV1 is large and looks like a human for a reason. Dolva says this is important because the robot is supposed to be a friend to the children. Hopefully, AV1 will help some children feel less lonely while they are absent from class.28. How do children control the robot’s movements?A. By talking with the robot.B. By taking part in class activities.C. By the microphones equipped in it.D. By touching the tablet or phone.29. We can know that AV1___________.A. is equipped with cameras and speakersB. is created by Dolva and AabelC. can explain what children can’t understandD. is designed to treat the diseases of children30. Who is AV1 mainly designed for?A. Children who have just recovered from illnesses.B. Children who can’t go to school for a long time.C. Children who are bored with going to school.D. Children who can’t see, hear or speak.31. What’s the best title of the passage?A. Robot Helps Sick Children Feel Less LonelyB. No Isolation Announced Its New ProductC. Easy Communication with ClassmatesD. The Function of a Little RobotDWhile dog keepers realize their dogs can read their moods accurately, scientists have always been a little doubtful. Now thanks to some researchers at the University of Veterinary Medicine in Vienna, Austria, we finally have some convincing evidence. For their study, biologist Corson Miller and his team exposed eleven selected dogs to digital images of women that were either angry or happy. Half the dogs were rewarded for touching the screen when shown a happy face, while the other half got their treat for selecting those that appeared angry.Interestingly, the dogs were not provided with the entire face. Some dogs were shown only upper halves while the others observed lower halves. That’s because the scientists believe humans show their emotions on their entire face. After some training like how to recognize small differences like the wrinkles between the eyes or the changes in their shape that accompany the happy or angry expressions, the dogs were mostly able to identify the correct expression not onlyon a familiar face but on a strange face. The researchers concluded the dogs were smart enough to read human emotions. They also found those being trained to read angry expressions took a longer time to learn. They guess it may be because dogs find angry faces disgusting, causing them to withdraw quickly. However, once the smart dogs realized they were getting rewarded, the trepidation seemed to disappear. In fact, the dogs had such a good time playing the computer “game” that scientists had a hard time keeping them away from the touch screens after the study was completed. The researchers also noticed only dogs with a male owner had a hard time understanding the expressions correctly. Since the touchscreen models were all females, this confirmed what has been observed in previous studies—dogs are more efficient at reading facial expressions of people that are the same gender as their owner.32. How did the scientists conduct the experiment?A. By mixing the selected dogs together.B. By leaving dogs to women who are either happy or angry.C. By rewarding only half of the dogs touching the screen.D. By showing digital pictures of women’s happy or angry faces.33. Which of the following statements is TRUE about the dogs in the study?A. The dogs were not all provided with the entire face.B. The dogs couldn’t read strangers’ facial expressions.C. The dogs could make out small changes accompanying facial expressions.D. According to their size, the dogs were given either upper or lower faces.34. The underli ned word “trepidation” in paragraph 5 probably means ______.A. curiosityB. horrorC. excitementD. doubt35. How might the results change if the dogs with female owners are shown pictures of male faces?A. They would be scared away at the sight of the pictures.B. They found it easy to tell the emotions on the entire face.C. They found it hard to tell the moods on the faces of a different gender.D. They would only tell the emotions on partial faces rather than on entire faces.第二节阅读填句(共5小题;每小题2分, 满分10分)根据短文内容, 从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。
