MR. MALL: It's a small blue case and it's got a zip. There's a label on the handle with my name and address on it.

ATTENDANT: What about this one? This one's got a label.

MR. MALL: Let me see it.

ATTENDANT: What's your name and address?

MR. MALL: David Hall, 83, Bridge Street.

ATTENDANT: That's right. D. N. Hall, 83, Bridge Street.

ATTENDANT: Three pounds fifty pence, please.

MR. MALL: Here you are.

ATTENDANT: Thank you.

MR. MALL: Hey!

ATTENDANT: What's matter?

MR. MALL: This case doesn't belong to me! You've given me the wrong case!

There was a time when the owners of shops and businesses

in Chicago had to pay large sums of money to gangsters in

return for 'protection.' If the money was not paid promptly,

the gangsters would quickly put a man out of business by

destroying his shop. Obtaining 'protection money' is not a

modern crime. As long ago as the fourteenth century, an

Englishman, Sir John Hawkwood, made the remarkable

discovery that people would rather pay large sums of

money than have their life work destroyed by gangsters.

Six hundred years ago, Sir Johan Hawkwood arrived in

Italy with a band of soldiers and settled near Florence. He

soon made a name for himself and came to be known to the

Italians as Giovanni Acuto. Whenever the Italian city-states

were at war with each other, Hawkwood used to hire his

Yesterday afternoon Frank Hawkins was telling me about his experiences as a young man. Before he retired, Frank wasthe head of a very large business company, but as a boy he used to work in a small shop. It was his job to repair bicycles andat that time he used to work fourteen hours a day. He saved money for years and in 1958 he bought a small workshop of hisown. In his twenties Frank used to make spare parts for aeroplanes. At that time he had two helpers. In a few years the smallworkshop had become a large factory which employed seven hundred and twenty-eight people. Frank smiled when heremembered his hard early years and the long road to success. He was still smiling when the door opened and his wife camein. She wanted him to repair their grandson's bicycle!

said she couldn't make up her mind. She said she would have

to ask her future husband. She said her future husband would

not let her make another film. Then she introduced us to

Carlos and told us they would get married next week.'
