And yet when you travel from one country to another, you will find that people have quite different feelings about food. People often feel that what they eat is normal (正常) and that what other people eat is strange or silly. In most parts of Asia, for example, no meal is complete without rice. In England, people eat potatoes every day. In the Middle East, bread is the main part of every meal. Eating like so many things we do, becomes a habit which is difficult to change. Americans like to drink a lot of orange juice and coffee. The English drink tea four or five times every day. Australians drink a great deal of beer, and the French drink wine every day.The sort of meat people like to eat also differs from one country to another. Horse meat is thought to be delicious in France. In Hong Kong, some people enjoy eating snakes. New Zealanders eat sheep, but they never eat goat meat. The Japanese don't like to eat sheep meat because of its smell, but they enjoy eating raw fish (生鱼).So it seems that although eating is a topic we can talk about for hours, there is very little common sense in what we say it. People everywhere enjoy eating what they have always eaten, and there is very little we can do to change our eating habits.21. Which of the following is true according to the article?A. All people have the same feeling about food.B. In most parts of Asia, people usually have rice for meals.C. People often consider other people to be strange or silly.D. The topic people spend time talking about is bread and meat.22. People in different countries ___ .A. drink the same sort of wineB. have the same eating habitC. eat different kinds of meatD. have the same tea at different time within a day23. The Japanese don't like to eat sheep meat __ .A. because they dislike its smellB. because it is too expensiveC. because it is easy to go badD. because they think it will do harm to their health24. English people drink tea four or five times a day _ .A. because they get thirsty easilyB. because there is plenty of tea in BritainC. because of their drinking habitD. because they have enough time to do soBThe fact that blind people can see things using other parts of their bodies apart from their eyes may help us to understand our feelings about color. If they can sense color differences, then perhaps we, too, are affected (影响) by color without knowing it. Salesmen have discovered by experience over a long period of time that sugar sells badly in green wrappings (包装), that blue foods are considered not agreeable to the taste ,and that cosmetics (化妆品) should never be packed in brown. These discoveries have grown into a whole subject of color psychology (心理学).Some of our preferences (偏爱) are clearly psychological. Dark blue is the color of the night sky and therefore connected with calm, while yellow is a day color connected with energy and encouragement. Experiments have shown that colors, partly because they are connected with psychology, also have a direct effect on people’s mind. People in bright red surroundings (环境) show an increase in breathing speed, heartbeat and blood pressure. Red is exciting. Pure blue has exactly the opposite effect; it is a calming color. Being exciting, red was chosen as the signal for danger, but a closer study shows that a bright yellow can produce a more basic state of alarm, so fire engines in some advanced areas are now rushing around in bright yellow colors that stop buses, trucks and cars.25. The passage tells us that salesmen have _______.A. found out that colors affect salesB. discovered the relationship between color and psychologyC. tried colors on blind peopleD. developed a special subject of color psychology26. If people are exposed to pure blue, _______.A. their body pressure risesB. they won’t easily feel nervousC. they want to taste blue foodsD. they will feel like buying things27. Which of the following do you think is the best title of the passage?A. Color and FeelingsB. Colors and SalesC. The Blind and ColorsD. Preferences for ColorsCAntarctica, with its seemingly endless icy beauty, is one place where one look is worth a thousand words. My own dream to see it came true last January when I joined the sixth exploration crew(考查队) of the China National Marine Bureau. We spent 10 days connecting flights to reachour goal, but finally arrived at the Great Wall Station on Antarctica on the eve of Chinese New Year. There are only two seasons in Antarctica: winter and summer. You get polar nights in winter and polar days in summer. Day is longer than night in summer, and the temperature often reaches below zero. Luckily, there are no snowstorms in summer, which makes it the best season to travel. What I imagined before starting for Antarctica was a world of ice, storms, endless cold and loneliness. When I stopped on Antarctica for the first time, however, I saw rich, energetic and beautiful scenery that was beyond anything I had imagined. We only spent 11 days at the South Pole, but every minute was spent taking pictures and losing our heart to the wonderland. Beauty enveloped us as we watched the world around us. The mountains, oceans, ice, snow, sky, earth and people all seemed to have their own stories.Rocks from Antarctica are considered valuable. Unfortunately, I didn’t bring one back. However, my heavy bags full of films are certainly worth that. It is in these pictures that the true Antarctica comes alive.28. Why is summer the best season to go to Antarctica?A.There are no snowstorms in summer.B. Night is longer than day in summer.C. The temperature often reaches below zero in summer.D. In this season, Antarctica is world of ice, storms and loneliness.29. What made the writer unexpected(意外) is that he saw_______.A. the only two seasons there: winter and summerB. the world of ice, storms ,endless cold and lonelinessC. the rich, energetic and beautiful sceneryD. the Great Wall Station and many rocks there30. The writer joined the sixth exploration team to _______.A. make some studies of the weather and the animalsB. study the relationship between the weather and the animalsC. collect some information for a scientific study centerD. capture(捕获) the rich, energetic and beautiful scenery D.it is always necessary to unite many countries into one。

Looking down, I immediately recognized that something was wrong, and ran down to the edge of the near bank. There I saw Ma Shwe with her three-month-old calf struggling in the fast-rising water, and it was a life-and-death struggle. Her calf was floating and screaming with fear. Ma Shwe was as near to the far bank as she could get, holding her whole body against the rushing water, and keeping the calf pressed against her huge body. Every now and then the rushing water would sweep the calf away. There was a sudden rise in the water and the calf was washed clean over the mother’s body and was gone. Ma Shwe turned quickly to reach it and pressed the calf with her head and trunk(象鼻) against the rocky bank. Then with a huge effort, she picked it up in her trunk and tried until she was able to place it on a narrow shelf of rock.Just at this moment she fell back into the river. If she were carried down, it would be certain death. I knew, as well as she did, that there was one spot(地点) where she could get up the bank, but it was on the other side from where she had put her calf. While I was wondering what I could do next, I heard the sound of a mother’s love. When monkey-pox, a disease usually found in the African rain forest, suddenly turns up in children in the AmericanMidwest, it’s hard not to wonder if the disease that comes from foreign animals is homing in on human beings. “Most of the infections (感染) we think of as human infections started in other animals,” says Stephen Morse, director of the Center for Public Health Preparedness at Columbia University. It’s not just that we’re going to where the animals are; we’re also bringing them closer to us. Popular foreign pets have brought a whole new disease to this country. A strange illness killed Isaksen’s pets, and she now thinks that keeping foreign pets is a bad idea. “I don’t think it’s fair to have them as pets when we have such a limited knowledge of them,” says Isaksen.“Laws allowing these animals to be brought in from deep forest areas without stricter control need changing,”says Peter Schantz. Monkey-pox may be the wake-up call. Researchers believe infected animals may infect their owners. We know very little about these new diseases. A new bug (病毒) may be kind at first. But it may develop into something harmful (有害的). Monkey-pox doesn’t look a major infectious disease. But it is not impossible to pass the disease from person to person.29. Before that time, large computers were only used by large, rich companies that could afford the investment. With the advancement of technology, small computers have come onto the market, which are capable of doing the work that used to be done by much larger and expensive computers, so now most smaller companies can use themThe main development in small computers has been in the field of word processors (处理器) , or WPS as they are often called. 40% of British offices are now estimated to have a word processor and this percentage is growing fast. There are many advantages in using a word processor for both secretary and manager. The secretary is freed from a lot of daily work, such as re-typing letters and storing papers. He or she can use this time to do other more interesting work for the boss. From a manager’s point of view, secretarial time is being made better use of and money can be saved by doing daily jobs automatically outside office hours. But is it all good? If a lot of daily secretarial work can be done automatically, surely this will mean that fewer secretaries will be needed. Another worry is the increasing medical problems related to work with visual display units (显示器). The case of a slow loss of sight among people using word processors seems to have risen greatly. It is also feared that if a woman works at a VDU for lo, ng hours, the unborn child in her body might be killed. Safety screens to put over a VDU have been inventedbut few companies in England bother to buy them.Whatever the arguments for and against word processor, they are a key feature (特征) of this revolution in office practice.。

If the Internet had only this very fast search engine, it would have justified its existence many times over. It is the most popular search engine on the web with a 54 percent market share, ahead of Yahoo! You type almost anything, however unclear, into the space provided and in a second it has come up with hundreds of references. It knowledge is power, then Google commands the gateway.Yahoo! Becomes GiantYAHOO () was the first wonder of the web, and in many respects, it still is. It started in January 1994 when two California graduate students, Jerry Yang and David Filo, started compiling (编译) a database of links, mainly for their personal use. But well before the end of the year, it had become recognizable as Yahoo we know today. In the past seven years, Yahoo had grown rapidly, partly through a long string of buys. Yahoo now offers almost everything you could want: emails, instant messages, chats, clubs, photo albums, and a lot more.eBay Enables Everyone to Buy and SelleBay ( ), which deals with online trading and shopping services worldwide. The time printed on the invitation was 7:30 pm. Jane went off with her husband, expecting a merry evening of wine, food, and song.By 9:45, everybody was having great fun, but no food had appeared. Jane and David were restless. Other guests began whispering that they, too, were starving. But no one wanted to leave, just in case some food was about to appear. By 11:00, there was still no food, and everyone was completely off their heads. Jane and David left hungry and angry.Their experience suggests that the words on the printed invitations need to be made clearer. Everyone reads and understands the invitations differently. Most of us would agree that 6:30 -8:30 pm means drinks only, go out to dinner afterwards; 8:00 pm or 8:30 pm means possible dinner, but 9:30 pm and any time thereafter means no food, eat beforehand, roll up late. But this is not always the case. If asked to a students’ party at 6:30 pm, it is normal for guests not to appear before midnight, if at all, and no one cares. Being the first to arrive ---looking eager ---is social death. When my mother is asked to a party at 6:30, she likes to be there, if not on time, then no later than seven. My age group (late thirties) falls somewhere between the two, but because we still think we’re young, we’re probably closer to student-time than grown-up time. The accepted custom at present is confusing, sometimes annoying, and it often means you may go home hungry, but it does lend every party that precious element of surprise.4. The underlined words “off their heads” probably mean ________.A. tiredB.crazy C.curious D. hopeless5. Jane and David’s story is used to show that ________.A. party invitations can be confusingB. party-goers usually get hungry at partiesC. people should ask for food at partiesD. birthday parties for middle-aged people are dull6. For some young people, arriving on time for a students’ party will probably be considered _______.A. very difficultB. particularly thoughtfulC. friendly and politeD. socially unacceptable7. What is the general idea of the text?A. It’s safe to arrive late just when food is served.B. It’s wise to eat something before going to a party.C. It’s important to follow social rules of party-going.D. It’s necessary to read invitations carefully.根据首字母或中文提示,写出下列各句中所缺单词。

Helen Fry’s new book Quick Cooking has been specially written for busy people. It has over 1,000 recipes, from the famous Spanish gazpacho to Swedish smorgasbord. The book is well written and the photographs and drawings are clear. (They are like those in the excellent little Quick Dressmaking and Quick Gardening.) The book has a strong plastic cover. It is easy to find your way around it too. And busy people, notice this! Mrs. Fry tells you how much time you need in order to get each dish ready.Quick Cooking has 4 parts, one for each season. This helps you to use fresh fruit and vegetables when they are cheaper—and, of course, better. There are a lot of exciting ideas from foreign countries, and most of the recipes are easy to follow. You take something simple like a chicken or some cheese, and make and unusual dish out of it. For example, there are no fewer than 40 recipes for eggs! Mrs Fry does not plan complete meals for the “quick book”. The beginners will have to find out a lot of things for himself—or herself. But this ought not to be difficult with such a good book. I wanted to try many of the recipes as soon as I read them. Just five years ago, if you wanted to visit Germany in the north and Spain in the south in one trip, you had to wait for weeks to apply for different visas from the two countries. You also needed a calculator because both countries had different money. Today, with a Schengen Visa issued by any member country, you can travel across 15 European countries without stopping. Since 2002, within most of the EU, there is now just one type of money called the Euro. The Euro was designed to be the only money in the EU, and already makes it easier to shop around. Last Sunday evening, we invited some people home for dinner. I dressed them nicely for the party, and told them that their job was to join Mommy in answering the door when the bell rang. Mommy would introduce them to the guests, and then they would take the guests' coats upstairs and put them on the bed in the second bedroom. The guests arrived. I introduced my two daughters to each of them. The adults were nice and kind and said how lucky we were to have such good kids. Each of the guests made a particular fuss over Kelly, the younger one, admiring her dress, her hair and her smile. Without most people realizing it, there has been a revolution in office work over the last ten years. Before that time, large computers were only used by large, rich companies that could afford the investment. With the advancement of technology, small computers have come onto the market, which are capable of doing the work that used to be done by much larger and expensive computers, so now most smaller companies can use them
The main development in small computers has been in the field of word processors (处理器) , or WPS as they are often called.
Safety screens to put over a VDU have been invented
but few companies in England bother to buy them.
Whatever the arguments for and against word processor, they are a key feature (特征) of this revolution in office practice.。
