AWhen you are learning a foreign language, one of the hardest things to grasp is how and when to use colloquial idioms (口语习语) and expressions. Often used in both spoken and written la nguage, these idioms are very important. Using one of these phrases correctly when speaking or writing to an English spea ker is very impressive. Here are some wonderful British idiom s. Use them wisely!1. When pigs fly! This expression is one of my favorites and I use it all the time. It is used primarily when speaking, meaning that something i s extremely unlikely or impossible. For example, “I will forgive him when pigs fly!”“When do you think you will get a gym me mbership, Louise?”“When pigs fly!”2. A penny for your thoughts? This question is used in a situation where someone appears t houghtful or is very quiet seeming lost in thought. But rememb er that you don’t actually have to pay them a penny if they do tell you what is going on! For example, “You’ve been a bit qui et this evening, Pete. A penny for your thoughts?”3. It’s the bee’s knees. This expression means that something is of excellence or of v ery high quality. For example, “Try this chocolate. It’s the bee’s knees.”4. To feel a bit under the weather.I use this expression in many different situations but most use it to refer to feeling ill, or unwell. You would not use this phras e if you were feeling extremely unwell. It is only for those time s when you are feeling a little ill, or suffering from something slightly like a cold or a cough. However, this can also be used t o refer to feeling emotionally(情感上的) low.21. What would you say if you think something will never hap pen?A. When pigs fly!B. It’s the bee’s knees.C. I asked her if she was sleeping there and she looked embarrassed and said “no”. I didn’t believe her. It was winter at the time. She just had a T-shirt on and a small backpack and looked cold.I thought of Mindy, my best friend, who has a big heart and al ways helps people in need. Mrs. GreenBAt the beginning of my Senior Two, I received my letter from the New York University (NYU) exchange program, and I was very relieved (如释重负的). I finally had the chance to take high level courses, experience college student life, and gain some extra credit. My aim was to learn the basics of accounting, economics, marketing, and psychology. When I arrived, I found that there were only 30 students in the program. I was so excited, but also nervous. I was worried that I would not make friends in my new environment. However, I turned out to be totally wrong. NYU hosts free events every week, giving students the chance to meet new people and explore New York City. My favorite events were the Broadway show trips. But there were always a limited number of spots. Therefore, I had to sign up online as soon as I received the reminder and hope that I would be chosen to go.This summer, I have watched ten Broadway shows, including To Kill a Mockingbird, Aladdin, and Frozen. Actually, I was fully attracted by the shows. Watching a performance almost every week was so amazing. On the way to the different shows, I always met someone new and we’d often chat about our lives. I was so thankful for making so many new friends.By the time the shows were finished, it was usually late at night. However, I wasn’t scared as Times Square was always so busy, filled with people and lights. This summer was the best ever and I certainly caught a glimpse (一瞥) into college life at NYU. Surprisingly, it is not as scary as I thought.24.Who might be the author of this text?A.A college student. B.A high school student.C.A high school teacher. The list goes on and on.As far as the Internet being a part of our lives, well, that train has left the station. There is no going back to an Internet-free life. But can using the Internet too much be bad for our health? It might be, say researchers. A new study finds that heavy Internet use may be connected to high blood pressure in a young group: teenagers. The study results show that teens who spend at least 14 hours a week only online may cause high blood pressure, which makes their hearts and blood vessels(血管)work too hard. Over time, this extra pressure increases the risk of a heart attack. High blood pressure can also cause heart and other diseases. The Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, Michigan did the study. 335 young people, from 14 to 17 years old, took part in it. 134 of the teens were described as “heavy Internet users”. And researchers found that out of these 134 teens, 26 had high blood pressure. The researchers said the study was the first to connect heavy Web use with high blood pressure. The lead researcher is Andrea Cassidy-Bushrow. She says, “Using the Internet is part of our daily life, but it shouldn’t ruin(毁坏)us.” Ms. Cassidy-Bushrow adds that it is important for teens to stop to have a rest regularly (有规律地)from their computers or smartphones and do some kind of physical activity. He looked around, but seemed really out of it. Then Doug went back into the hallway and stood there looking straight up at the light. This was really strange. Cait didn't know what to do. Just then, Cait's father appeared and explained Doug was sleepwalking. Not all seep is the same every night. We experience some deep, quiet sleep and some active sleep, which is when dreams happen. You might think sleepwalking would happen during active sleep but a person isn't physically active during active sleep. It usually happens in the first few hours of sleep in the period called deep sleep. The truth is that not all sleepwalkers walk. Some simply sit up or stand in bed or act like they're awake when, in fact, they're asleep! Most, however, do get up and walk around for a few seconds or for as long as half an hour.Sleepwalkers' eyes are open, but they don't see the same way they do when they're awake They tend to go back to bed on their own and won’t remember it in the morning. You also might have heard that sleepwalkers can get frightened if you wake them up. That's true, so what do you do if you see someone sleepwalking? You should call for a grown-up who can lead the person back to bed. But unfortunately, most schools don’t have classes that teach you how to take notes. So here are some tips.Write down key facts. If you have a teacher who writes notes on the board, that’s good: You can copy them down. If not, write down the most important points from class. Does your history teacher mention the date of a key Civil War battle? Does your English teacher give examples of Shakespeare’s use of irony(讽刺)? Write them down!Different teachers do things differently. For example, some teachers may mention lots of dates and facts in class but only write the key ones on the board. Other teachers may not write anything down, but they may repeat a certain date or a piece of information. After a while, you’ll get to know a teacher’s style.Don’t overdo it. Don’t go crazy taking notes. You’ll be frantic(慌乱的) if you try to write down every word that’s said in class. And if you focus too much on getting your notes right, you might miss important points. Some people actually learn better by listening, writing down a few key points, and then going over the material after class.Ask. Don’t be afraid to ask the teacher to repeat something you miss. If the teacher is going too fast, your classmates will also be happy to hear the information again. If you don’t want to ask in class, see your teacher afterwards. It’s much easier than wondering if you got the notes right as you study.Compare. Keep your notes handy when you’re doing your reading homework. Compare what you wrote with what the reading says—you may even want to add to your notes as you read.1. What’s an advantage of note-taking according to the writer?A. It helps you to get good marks in tests.B. It’s a basic skill in researching a paper.C. It helps fix your mind on what the teacher says.D. It gives you a better understanding of key facts.2. Why is Shakespeare mentioned in the passage?A. To introduce the topic of note-taking.B. To compare writing styles in different times.C. To give an example of forming good habits.D. To explain what a key fact is in a teacher’s class.3. What is suggested in the third paragraph?A. Teachers encourage their students to be active in class.B. It’s helpful for teachers to learn from each other in styles.C. It’s not always possible to note down all information in class.D. A teacher’s style should be taken into consideration when taking notes.4. What’s the writer’s opinion according to the passage?A. Students must try to take correct and detailed notes in class.B. Students should put down only key points while listening carefully.C. Students must not interrupt the teacher by asking questions in class.D. Students should put down as much information as possible in class.二、阅读七选五(本题共计1小题,总分10分)5.(10分)How to prepare for an exam is a big question that you always ask yourself. I’d say that he was about 40 years older than his classmates in my undergraduate communications class. He eagerly jumped into class discussions, with his humor and wisdom of experience. And he was always respectful of the other students’ perspectives, as if each of them was a teacher. Jerry Valencia walked in with a smile — and he left with one too.“These students gave me the confidence that I didn’t need to feel bad about my age,” Valencia says. One day, I spotted Valencia on campus. He said he would have to stop taking classes that semester and reapply for next year. By then, he hoped to have earned enough money and have his student-loan papers in order. He asked seriously whether he could still sit in on my communications class.Sure, I said. But he wouldn’t get any credit. No problem, he said.Soon there he was again, back at his old desk, jumping into our discussions on how to find and tell stories in Los Angeles — a 63-year-old man with as much energy and curiosity as any of the youngsters in class.A lot of Valencia’s classmates apparently knew he couldn’t afford that semester’s tuition but was still doing the homework. “Here he is, willingly taking a class for the delight of it and benefit of learning,” says Jessica Espinosa, a 25-year-old junior. Afterward, I overheard Valencia wanted to stay in school until he earned a master’s degree, but it had taken him 12 years to finish community college, so he had a long way to go.There is something splendidly unreasonable about Valencia’s determination to get a four-year degree and then a master’s. At his current pace, he’ll be 90 when he finally hangs all that paper on the wall. But that doesn’t seem especially relevant. He’s found all the youthful energy and academic opportunity stimulating. Valencia’s grade in my class this semester will not show up on his transcripts (成绩单). But I’m giving him an A — and in the most important ways, it counts.24. What made Valencia different from his classmates?A. He was respectful to the teacher.B. He activated the class atmosphere.C. He was eager to learn despite his age.D. He often put forward different opinions.25. According to the author, why did Valencia continue to attend classes?A. He treasured the chance of learning.B. He wished to show his determination.C. He needed the credits to further his study.D. He desired to have an A on his transcripts.26. Which of the following best describes Valencia?A. Modest and independent.B. Energetic and generous.C. Enthusiastic and motivated.D. Considerate and intelligent.27. What can we learn from the passage?A. No pains, no gains.B. It is never too old to learn.C. Strike the iron while it is hot.D. Where there is life, there is hope.CScientists have shown how plants can protect themselves against genetic damage caused by environmental stresses. The growing tips of plant roots and shoots have an in-built mechanism (机制) that spells cell death if DNA damage is detected, avoiding passing on faulty DNA.Plants have small populations of stem cells(干细胞) at the tips of their roots and shoots, which enable them to continuously grow and produce new tissues throughout their lifetime. These stem cells serve as ancestors for plant tissues and organs. However, any genetic faults present in the stem cells will continue to exist and be passed on permanently throughout the plant’s life, which could last thousands of years.Given the critical role of stem cells and their exposure to potentially dangerous environments at the growing tips of roots and shoots, safeguards are necessary to prevent stem cell faults from becoming fixed. Researchers Nick Fulcher and Robert Sablowski, funded by the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council, aimed to uncover these protective mechanisms. Through experiments involving X-rays and chemicals, they discovered that stem cells were more sensitive to DNA damage compared to other cells. When DNA damage occurs, the cells have the capacity to detect it and cause programmed cells to die, preventing the propagation of the damaged genetic code to the rest of the plant tissues. This process has similarities to the safeguard mechanism found in animal cells, which has been broadly studied due to its relevance in preventing cancer. The identification of a similar protective system in plants is of great interest in the field of plant development. It also helps scientists develop plants that can better handle environmental stress. So knowledge of how plants deal with these stresses is of fundamental significance to agricultural science’s response to climate change.28. What is the function of the in-built mechanism in plants?A. To produce more roots and shoots.B. To increase the overall lifetime of the plant.C. To enhance plant growth and nutrient intake.D. To stop genetic faults in stem cells passing on.29. What can we know about stem cells in plants according to the text?A. They are relatively abundant in quantity.B. They are resistant to environmental stresses.C. They make quick response to DNA damage.D. They have the ability to repair damaged DNA.30. What does the underlined word “propagation” in paragraph 4 mean?A. Spread.B. Change.C. Existence.D. Self-repair.31.What does the last paragraph focus on?A. The way of dealing with climate change on the earth.B. The significance of identifying the protective system in plants.C. The method of ensuring plant survival under environmental stress.D. The urgency of developing plants that can handle environmental stress.DWhen I mentioned to some friends that we all have accents, most of them proudly replied, “Well, I speak perfect English/Chinese.” But this kind of reply misses the point.More often than not, what we mean when we say someone “has an accent” is that their accent is different from the local one, or that their pronunciations are different from our own. But this understanding of accents is limiting and could give rise to prejudice (偏见). Funnily enough, in the language study, every person speaks with an accent. It is the regular differences in how we produce sounds that decide our accents. Even if you don’t hear it yourself, you speak with some sort of accent. In this sense, it’s pointless to point out that someone “has an accent”. We all do!Every person speaks a dialect (方言), too. In the field of language study, a dialect is a version of a language that is characterized by its variations of structure, phrases and words. For instance, “You got eat or not?” (meaning “Have you eaten?”) is an acceptable and understood question in Singapore Oral English. The fact that this expression would cause a standard American English speaker to stop for a while doesn’t mean that Singapore Oral English is “wrong” or “ungrammatical”. The sentence is well-formed and clearly communicative, according to native Singapore English speakers’ solid system of grammar. Why should it be wrong just because it’s different? We need to move beyond a narrow understanding of accents and dialects – for the good of everyone. Language differences like these provide insights (深刻见解) into people’s cultural experiences and backgrounds. In a global age, the way one speaks is a distinct part of who they are. Most people would be happy to talk about the cultures behind their speech. We’d learn more about the world we live in and make friends along the way.32. What does the author think of some friends’ reply in paragraph 1?A. It’s impolite and wrong.B. It shows their language levels.C. It reflects their self-confidence.D. It misses the real meaning of accents.33. Why does the author use the example of Singapore Oral English?A. To prove dialects are acceptable.B. To show various types of English.C. To correct a grammatical mistake.D. To encourage more changes to languages.34. What does the author mostly want us to do in the last paragraph?A. To learn to speak with our local dialects.B. To treasure the value of accents and dialects.C. To have friends with different accents and dialects.D. To have a better understanding of people’s experiences.35. What can be a suitable title for this passage?A. Everyone Has an AccentB. Standard English Is at RiskC. Dialects Lead to MisunderstandingD. AI speak Spanish, because I was born in Spain. But then at primary school I had to learn Russian, and at high school, I was taught how to speak German. But I always wanted to speak English. At last I came to America. Everywhere there was English! But even if I heard and felt its presence, it was hard for me to understand it and express myself in it. The few lessons ofEnglish that I had taken in Spain gave me only a chance to introduce myself, and I didn’t even know how to buy things and ask directions. I realized that I had to do something to make myself more understandable. I bought a few books and learnt them by heart, chapter after chapter. But it wasn’t enough. A mirror or a wall was a graceful listener, but they didn’t respond. They couldn’t correct me if I was wrong. To talk to somebody, I went to a high school to take a course in English for foreigners. Disappointingly, it took almost an hour to get through the process of introducing ourselves. Everyone had to learn something that I had already known from my books –the English alphabet (字母表) and numbers. I thought it was a waste of time, so I quit. After a month, I tried again, but this time at college. After 15 minutes of introducing ourselves, a teacher gave us a lecture about the history of English. Then we were told that it was very important to know English in a country where English was spoken. It took three hours for the teacher to tell us this. Again, I quit. But I didn’t stop looking for something or someone that would help me to achieve my goal, and I found a tutor from Literacy Volunteers o f America. But I still wasn’t happy with the classes. And when it was my turn to give a speech, I was happy to use all the long, complicated words that I had learned from one of my English books. When I had finished, my tutor said “Well,I think I have to learn English before coming to teach you!” This time, the tutor quit!21. How many languages has the writer learned?A. Two.B. Three.C.
