Unit 15 Learning李仕才一、阅读理解A"An apple a day keeps the doctor away" is a popular saying in the United States. It may be a common saying, but it is not scientifically confirmed. However, a new study adds to evidence that suggests taking a small amount of aspirin can help keep the doctor away.Peter Elwood is with Cardiff University’s School of Medicine in Britain. Forty years ago, he was involved in the first study to explore the effects of aspirin on the prevention of heart disease. Elwood’s team examine d 47 studies for evidence that aspirin helped cancer patients. They found there’s fairly consistent evidence of a 15 to 20 percent reduction in death and a reduction in cancer’s spread, by low dose(剂量) aspirin. By low dose, he means 81 milligrams. The study followed cancer patients for five years. Elwood says the evidence is strong that aspirin delays death among cancer patients.Elwood’s team are excited to have this evidence from the study. Elwood adds that it is not a cure but a small sign of better things to come, what he calls a little hope and encouragement. "If you asked me personally what I would do if doctors told me I had cancer, I would say I would have no hesitation in taking it. But I do not recommend it to people. I want them to have the evidence and make their own decisions." The only major risk is that aspirin can cause stomach bleeding. But Elwood says it usually does not cause death. He adds that the evidence points to big health benefits of taking a daily aspirin. So, for some people, the pros might overweigh the cons.1. What does the author want to tell us in Paragraph 1?A. Patients should eat apples.B. Apples are popular with Americans.C. Aspirin can be good for health.D. Doctors should use aspirin instead of apples.2. What does Elwood suggest people do?A. The less aspirin, the better.B. Don’t delay in taking aspirin.C. Taking aspirin is a better way to cure cancer.D. Make decisions in the best interest of their own.3.What does the underlined sentence in the last paragraph mean?A. Aspirin is the best cure for cancer.B. Taking aspirin won’t kill in the long run.C. Taking aspirin does more good than harm.D. The side effect of taking aspirin is strong.【语篇解读】文章介绍每天服用少量的阿司匹林对健康有好处,可以延缓癌症病人的死亡。
入舵市安恙阳光实验学校Unit 15 Learning 课时练1 2篇阅读+1篇完形Ⅰ.阅读理解A(2020·辽宁五校模拟)While the start of a new school year is always exciting, this year was even more so for some elementary school students in Auckland, New Zealand. They became the world’s first kids to be “taught” by a digital teacher. Before you start imagining a humanlike robot walking around the classroom, Will is just an avatar(化身) that appears on the students’ desktops, or smartphone screens, when ordered to come. The autonomous animation(动画制作) platform has been modeled after the human brain and nervous system, allowing it to show humanlike behavior. The digital teacher is assigned to teach “Be sustainable with energy”—a free program for Auckland elementary schools.Just like the humans it replaced, Will is able to instantly react to the students’ responses to the topic. Thanks to a webcam and microphone, the avatar not only responds to questions the kids may have, but also picks up nonverbal cues(暗示). For instance, if a student smiles at Will, he responds by smiling back. This twoway interaction not only helps attract the students’ attention, but also allows the program’s developers to monitor their involvement, and make changes if needed.Nikhil Ravishankar believes that Willlike avatars could be a novel way to catch the attention of the next generation. He says, “I have a lot of hope in this technology as a means to deliver costeffective, rich, educational experience in the future.”The program, in place since August 2018, has been a great success thus far. Ravishankar says, “What was fascinating to me was the reaction of the children to Will. The way they look at the world is so creative and different, and Will really captured their attention.” However, regardless of how popular it becomes, Will is unlikely to replace human educators any time soon.【解题导语】新西兰奥克兰的一些小学生成为世界上第一批由数字化老师“教”的孩子。

高考题型提能练十五 Unit 15 LearningⅠ.阅读理解ARecordings of angry bees are enough to send big, tough African elephants running away, a new study says.Beehives (蜂窝) —either recorded or real —may even prevent elephants from damaging farmers' crops. In 2002, scientist Lucy King and her team found that elephants a void certain trees with bees living in them.Today, Lucy wants to see if African honeybees might discourage elephants from eating crops. But before she asked farmers to go to the trouble of setting up beehives on their farms, she needed to find out if the bees would scare elephants away.Lucy found a wild beehive inside a tree in northern Kenya and set up a recorder. Then she threw a stone into the beehive, which burst into life.Lucy and her assistant hid in their car until the angry bees had calmed down.Next, Lucy searched out elephant families in Samburu National Reserve in northern Kenya and put a speaker in a tree close to each family. From a distance, Lucy switched on the prerecorded sound of angry bees whi le at the same time recording the elephants with a video camera.Half the elephant groups left the area within ten seconds.Out of a total of 17 groups, only one group ignored the sound of the angry bees.Lucy reported that all the young elephants immediately ran to their mothers to hide under them. When Lucy played the sound of a waterfall (瀑布) instead of the angry bees to many of the same elephant families, the animals were undisturbed.Even after four minutes, most of the gr oups stayed in one place.Lucy is now studying whether the elephants will continue to avoid the sound of angry bees after hearing it several times. She hasn't tested enough groups yet to know, but her initial (最初的) results were promising enough to begin trials with farmers. She has now begun placing speakers in the fields to see if elephants are frightened away.1.We know from the passage that elephants may be frightened of________.A.loud noisesB.some cropsC.video camerasD.angry bees2.Why did Lucy throw a stone into a wild beehive?A.To record the sound of bees.B.To make a video of elephants.C.To see if elephants would run away.D.To find out more about the behavior of bees.3.As mentioned in the passage, Lucy________.A.works by herself in AfricaB.needs to test more elephant groupsC.has stopped elephants eating cropsD.has got farmers to set up beehives on their farms4.Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?A.Young elephants ignore African honeybees.B.Waterfalls can make elephants stay in one place.C.Elephants do not go near trees with bees living in them.D.Farmers do not allow Lucy to conduct tests in their fields.B(2016·江西重点中学联考)I've just got to talk about this problem I'm having with my postman. It all began a year ago, after the birth of his first child. Not wanting to appear rude, I asked him about the baby. The next week, not wanting him to think I had asked out of mere politeness the week before, I asked all about the baby again. Now I can't break the habit. I freeze w henever I see him c oming. The words “How's the baby?” come out on their own. It holds me up. It holds him up. So why can't I stop it? The answer is that I want him to like me. Come to think of it, I want everyone to like me.My sister had the same problem with the caretaker of her block of flats: “All he ever does is complain; he talks at me rather than to me, never listens to a word I say, and yet for some reason I'm always really nice to him. I'm worried in case I have a difficulty one day, and he won't lift a finger to he lp.”What about at work? Richard Lawton, a management trainer, warns: “Those managers who are actually liked by most of their staff are always those to whom being liked is not the primary goal. The qualities that make managers popular are being honest with staff, treating them as human beings and observing common politeness like saying hello in the morning.” To explain the point, Richard mentions the story of the company chairman who desperately wanted to be liked and who, after making one of his managers fired, said with moist (湿润的) eyes that he was so, so sorry the man was leaving. The employee replied: “If you were that sorry, I wouldn't be leaving.” The lesson being, therefore, that if you try too hard to be liked, people won't like you.The experts sa y it all starts in childhood. “If children feel they can only get love from their parents by being good,” says Zelda WestMeads, a marriage guidance consultant, “they develop low selfconfidence and become compulsive_givers.” But is there anything wrong in being a giver, the world not being exactly short of takers? Anne Cousins believes there is. “There is a point at which giving becomes unhealthy,” she says. “It comes when you do things for others but feel bad about it.”I am now trying hard to say to peop le “I feel uncomfortable about saying this, but ...” and tell myself “Ref usal of a request does not mean rejection of a person” and I find I can say almost anything to almost anyone.5.Why does the author ask the postman about his baby?A.He is interested in the baby.B.He wants to create a good impression.C.He wants to be always polite to him.D.It's a way to start a chat with great politeness.6.What could we find out about the author's sister and the caretaker?A.She doesn't want to risk displeasing him.B.She doesn't pay attention to him.C.He often refuses to help her.D.He is impatient of her overreaction.7.The underlined words “compulsive givers” in the fourth paragraph refer to the people who ________.A.are willing to help othersB.couldn't bear to turn down requestsC.are unconfident of denying demandsD.are less selfish than takers8.What is the author's intention of writi ng this passage?A.To show how to let others like you more.B.To prove how to create a harmonious atmosphere.C.To encoura ge people to have more selfconfidence.D.To suggest ways of dealing with difficult people.CParties and social gatherings no longer excite us the same way they once did. This is not due to a lack of desire to socialize, but the smartphone. At parties, more people are on their smartphones than on their drinks. According to a recent International Data Corporation study, well over half of all Americans have a smartphone and reach for it the moment they wake up, keeping it in hand all day. In addition, too many people in society are using smartphones while driving and as a result, they get into car crashes. 34 percent of teenagers admit to texting while driving, and they confirm that text messaging is their number one driving interruption. People's attachment to their smartphones is unbelievably becoming more important than the lives of themselves and others.Just as drivers dismiss the importance of focusing while on the road, many people also fail to recognize the significance of human interaction. When with their friends, some people pointlessly check or send text messages in the presence of a friend, which sends a message to that friend: the person I am texting is more important than you. In addition, relying on our smartphones to make friends does not give us the same advantage as being able to make new friendships in the real world. Facetoface conversations will give us much stronger communication skills in the long run.As many people risk their lives and the lives of people around them just to send a text or mindlessly check their messages, smartphones are in many ways more dangerous to people. The quality of this technology is preventing societal achievements and weakening the value of communication. Not only is the smartphone affecting our desire to interact (交流) facetoface, but it is also lowering society's ability to communicate.9.The purpose of this text is to ________.A.call for an end to use the smartphone while drivingB.appeal to us to pay attention to communication skillsC.express a concern about the overuse of the smartphoneD.advise us to be cautious about the addiction to the smartphone10.The second paragraph is developed by ________.A.giving examplesB.listing figuresparing factsD.analyzing the effects11.The author advocates us to make new friends ________.A.by using smartphonesB.in a facetoface wayC.in different waysD.under a free circumstance12.Overdependence on the smartphone leads to the fact that ________.A.parties and gatherings limit their social circleB.people are more and more narrowmindedC.people's communication skills are weakenedD.facetoface communication becomes less importantⅡ.任务型阅读There is an old Spanish Proverb which states, “Tomorrow is often the busiest day of the week”. 高考英语一轮复习学案:Unit 15 Learning主题: 人与自我子话题: 乐于学习, 善于学习, 终身学习等对应教材: 必修5 Unit 15 Learning; 必修5 Unit 13 PeopleⅠ. 细品味经典文章(2020·全国Ⅰ卷阅读理解B) Returning to a book you’ve read many times can feel like drinks with an old friend. There’s a welcome familiari ty—but also sometimes a slight suspicion that time has changed you both, and thus the relationship. But books don’t change, people do. And that’s what makes the act of rereading so rich and transformative. The beauty of rereading lies in the idea that our bond with the work is based on our present mental register. It’s true, the older I get, the more I feel time has wings. But with reading, it’s all about the present. It’s about the now and what one contributes to the now, because reading is a give and take between author and reader. Each has to pull their own weight. There are three books I reread annually. The first, which I take to reading every spring, is Ernest Hemingway’s A Moveable Feast. Published in 1964, it’s his classic memoir of 1920s Paris. The language is almost intoxicating (令人陶醉的), an aging writer looking back on an ambitious yet simpler time. Another is Annie Dillard’s Holy the Firm, her poetic 1975 ramble (随笔) about everything and nothing. The third book is Julio Cort zar’s Save Twilight: Selected Poems, because poetry. And because Cort zar. While I tend to buy a lot of books, these three were given to me as gifts, which might add to the meaning I attach to them. But I imagine that, while money is indeed wonderful and necessary, rereading an author’s work is the highest currency a reader can pay them. The best books are the ones that open further as time passes. But remember, it’s you that has to grow and read and reread in order to better understandyour friends.Ⅱ. 按要求完成任务1. 写出文章中与学习有关的单词或短语。

Unit 15 Learning李仕才Ⅰ阅读理解AAging brings wrinkles, sagging bodies and frustrating forgetfulness. But getting older is not all bad for many people. Mounting evidence suggests aging may be a key to happiness. There is conflicting research on the subject, however, and experts say it may all boil down to this: Attitude is everything.Older adults tend to be more optimistic and have a more positive outlook on life than their younger and stressed opposites. The big question is why seniors are happier. A recent study suggests one reason: Older adults remember the past through happy memories. Aging can bring more cheer as people become more comfortable with themselves and their roles in society. The older adults said they were enjoying more time with their family, spending more time on hobbies and having greater financial security and did not have to work. But others are doubtful about the link between happiness and growing older."The notion that those in old age are happiest is misleading," said Richard Easterlin, a professor of economics at the University of Southern California. "It is based on comparing people of different ages who are the same in terms of income, health, family life." Easterlin added, "When you take account of the fact that older people have lower income than younger, are less healthy, and more likely to be living alone, then you will find it hard to accept that they are happier. In fact, scientists have found that as people age, their health declines and social networks disappear as their friends die, which can make the elderly less happy.Even if one does give in to age's dark side, health and happiness don't always go hand-in-hand. It's all about attitude. Research by the University of Chicago’s Yang suggests that attitude about life and happiness, is partly shaped by the era in which a person was born. It turns out that individuals who adapt the best to changes also have the highest expected levels of happiness.Despite the conflicting findings about aging and happiness, the good news is that there doesn’t appear to be a limit to how much happiness one can achieve in one’s life. “Most people desire happiness,”Easterlin said. “To my knowledge, no one has identified a limit to attainable happiness.”1.What does the last paragraph mainly tell us?A. The key factor to older adults’happinessB. There is a conflict between aging and happinessC. No one can define the limit to happiness.D. The relationship between health and happiness.2.Why are some seniors happier according to some experts?A. They focus on what makes them feel good.B. They have their own circle of friends.C. They have better income after retirement.3.What can we learn from the passage?A. People of the same age have the same sense of happiness.B. Attitude may play a very important role in happiness.C. People who adapt the best to changes are more likely to be unhappy.D. Older adults who have more valuable life experience are more optimistic.4.What’s the topic discussed in the passage?A. Whether aging or attitude brings happiness.B. Why seniors adapt the best to changes in society.C. What the limit to an elder person’s happiness is.D. How older people feel compared with younger people.【文章大意】随着年龄的增加变老,人们的幸福感也是不一样的。

Unit 15 LearningⅠ.阅读理解AMaps of the world's population show that the majority of people today live near water. We live along coastlines, around bays, up the course of rivers and streams and on islands. We also vacation at the beach and find comfort fishing on a lake. Nothing makes small children happier than the chance of playing in water.More surprisingly, this human favor for water makes evolutionary(进化的)sense. Sure, we need drinking water to live, but we have also benefited from what's swimming under the waves.Neuroscientist Crawford of the University of North London has proposed that our ancient ancestors attached to the sea, and that their devotion paid off by allowing the human species to develop large and complex brains.Crawford claims that when humans separated from apes(类人猿)and appeared in the forests of Africa, they stuck close to rivers and beaches and started catching fish, clams and crabs. That seafood was packed with omega3 fatty acids, essential fatty acids that promote brain cell growth. It's no coincidence, Crawford claims, that human brain growth began to increase rapidly once we left the woods and headed for the beach.Scientists have also discovered that people who eat fish regularly are less likely to suffer from depression than those who eat less seafood. Biochemist Hibbelin of the National Institutes of Health has shown that across cultures there is a direct link between amount of fish eaten each week and rates of depression. More interestingly, Hibbelin and researcher Laura have found that fish is commonly used as a symbol of happiness and good health in various religions and cultures. We know that fish and the sea are good for us, and so we seek them out. We vacation on the coast and see the waves come and go, feeling happiness has taken over our brain. When we move inland, or go home from vacation, we lose touch with our sea roots and feel unhappy.

Switzer’s marathon in 1967 became historic becauseshe was the first woman to complete the all-male race as an official participant.可知,当时马拉松项目只允许男性参与,这件事直接体现出当时社会上对女性充分参与体育运动的普遍反对,存在性别歧视。
3.D 推理判断题。
根据文章第三段,尤其是Plenty has changed in running since1967,thanks to Switzer’s efforts.Since 1972,women are welcome in the Boston Marathon and other major races.
根据最后一段,尤其最后一个句子“We’ve come a light year but westill have a long way to go.”体现了凯瑟琳对女性参与社会生活的信心。
故选A项。
Ⅱ.七选五(2018湖南长沙雅礼中学、河南实验中学高三联考)Why you shouldn’t punish your kids for lyingGetting your children to stop lying is challenging. There are many influences(TV, movies, video games and some great books) in which lies are common.Childrensee parents lie to others, if only to be polite. Most parents add to that with tales about the lives and activities of Santa Claus or the Tooth Fairy, or to lessenfears.1.The most common reactions to children who lie are explaining why it is wrongand punishment.2. Here are three better tools supported by research to useinstead.PRAISE: You could ask your child to say something that happened at school thatis true. When your child obeys, praise him enthusiastically.Be specific:3. and give your child a hug or a high five.Aim for one or two interactions (互动) like this a day.If you happen to “catch” your child in a lie, say something like, “That is not true and could get you in trouble outside of the home.”MODEL: Explicitly tell the truth. This could be about something that happenedwhen you were a child or something that happened during the day.It need not bedramatic.Another option is to play a game at dinner. Each person tells one thing that was true that day.Again, give a little praise to the child who normally lies if he/ she plays along.DECREASE PUNISHMENT AND MORALIZING: They are unlikely to change behavior or develop the conduct you want.4. Rather, use very mild punishment (light scolding, short loss of privilege, a brief time-out).More severe punishments (shouting, taking away something for a week, hitting) are not more effective inactually changing the frequency of lying.5. Usually they can be dropped by then.It is unlikely that lying will be completely removed, but with the right encouragement, it can be dramatically lessened.A.It is not what that is, but about practice.B.As ways of changing behavior, these are ineffective.C.That does not mean ignoring, lying or letting it go.D.“That was great! You told me what happened just like I asked.Wow!”E.Try these procedures for two to three weeks and see where you are.F.“You did a good job, but what you said was not what I’d like to know!”G.Parents do this out of love, but for some children, lying can become a problem.答案:1—5 GBDCEⅢ.完形填空(2018湖南长沙雅礼中学、河南实验中学高三联考)How can I forget the day?
