三峡大坝坐落于亚洲最繁忙的河川之一，长江是中国很重要的航运水路，从沿岸的上海到宜昌，一路连接到重庆，每年大约运输一千八百万磅的货物.一百多米高的大坝，每天要通过170艘船。配合世界第一大坝，中国的解决方法是修建全球第一大船闸，这座升船机高113公尺,可以处理重达3000吨的船只,成为全球第一大升船机。在此地兴建的工程中，它是一项了不起的工程。

但是管理洪水也会对环境造成严重的副作用。珍贵的长江淤泥因为水坝而无法流动，困在水库里流速缓慢的水中,很快沉积到河床中堆积起来。长江淤积问题非常严重，这使下游数百里的野生动物无法从水中获得养分.淤泥也会危及水库本身，他们会减小水库的容量，也会影响发电量。
