He wanted to buy something beautiful for her, but he had no idea how to do it, as he had very little money. The next morning he went to a shop. There were many fine things there: gold watches, diamond… but all these things were too expensive. There was one thing he could not take his eyes off. It was a beautiful vase. That was a suitable present for his fiancée. He had been looking at the vase for half an hour when the manager of the shop noticed him. The young man looked so pale, sad and unhappy that the manager asked what had happened to him.The young man told him everything. The manager felt sorry for him and decided to help him. If two of them come to a desert island, they say, at the end of the year both will claim they have made a million. It's a story which sums up "the trade". Objects, some precious, some whose only value is the old age, pass from hand to hand in search of home.Buying an antique is always an event. Collectors, bitten by the bug, develop a selective photographic memory. Point to any cherished object they own and they can tell you when they bought it, where, form whom and for how much. They may even remember what they ate for lunch that day and whether it rained.Britain is the world's biggest antique treasure store. Across the country, any day of the week, there may be several dozen auctions taking place. Even a small town will boast a couple of shops. In historic centres like Bath, the numbers may run into hundreds, not counting the stall holders packing specialists markets there, like Guinea Lane.In theory, the public's best chance of coming out ahead is in the sale rooms. They may be very famous, such as Sotheby's, Christies or Phillip's or lively provincial firms like Hobbs and Bath. Bidding is rapid and the auctioneer will try and process as many as 140 lots an hour. Given the pressure and the tensions, it's more than sensible to view the items to be sold in advance, either the previous day or before the sale begins. Then is the time to decide how far you are prepared to go and not to decide in the heat of battle.A 11. 大学英语( 2 )第一次网络作业答卷纸一.阅读:( 1 )New evidence shows that for children younger than 24 months, drinking lots of fruit juice (果汁) can be harmful. The liquid fills their tiny stomachs and ruins their appetite (胃口)for foods with needed nutrients (营养物)and calories. According to a study published in Pediatrics(小儿科), the resulting malnutrition(营养不良)can prevent babies from developing normally.Dr.Fima Lifshitz and a colleague at Maimonides Medical Center in Brooklyn, N.Y., examined eight children, ages 14 months to 27 months, whose growth had lagged behind their peers‟. Each was drinking 12 to 30 ounces of juice a day. After recording what else the children ate, researchers realized that the fruit beverages(饮料)accounted for 25 to 60 percent of the daily calorie consumption (热能消耗量). Soon after parents gave their children less juice and more milk, the children gained weight.Health professionals say babies under six months shouldn‟t drink juice; some pediatricians (儿科医师)suggest waiting until after the first birthday. Whenever they start, young children shouldn‟t have more than a few ounces a day.1. The schools and the educators made it easy on us. They taught that it was all right to be parents who take a let-alone policy. We stoppedmaking our children do homework. We gave them calculators, turned on the television, left the teaching to the teachers and went on holiday. Now teachers, faced with children who have been developing at their own pace for the past 15 years, are realizing we‟ve made a terrible mistake. One such teacher is Sharon Klompus who says of her students---“so inactive”---and wonders what happened. Nothing was demanded of them, she believes. Television, says Klompus, leads to children‟s inactivity. “We‟re not training kids to work any more,” says Kolmpus. “We‟re talking about a generation of kids who have never been hurt or hungry. They have learned somebody will always do it for them. Instead of saying …go look it up‟, you tell them the answer, it takes greater energy to say no to a kid.”Yes, it does. It takes energy and it takes work. It‟s time for parents to end their holiday and come back to work. It‟s time to take the car away, to turn the TV off, to tell them it hurts you more than them but it‟s for their own good. I liked my job, and was doing well there, but our company was bought by a larger company and most of the managers at our place lost their jobs. That was when I decided to do something I'd always wanted to do―become a freelance (自由撰稿的) writer. Changing professions (职业) has meant that my lifestyle has changed in a number of ways. The main difference for me now is that I have a much more flexible (灵活的) schedule. I work about as much as I did before―between 45 and 50 hours a week― but my schedule is much less rigid than it used to be. Before, I worked from 8 to 5 every day, with a few extra hours on weekends. Now, however, I work when I feel like it. For instance, sometimes I work until midnight or 2 A.M., then sleep until noon.I really prefer this kind of schedule. It seems more natural to me.I also decided that it was about time I began to pay more attention to my health. While I was working as a manager, I never exercised. I already felt tired after work, so I just came home in the evening and watched TV. However, last year I joined a health club and began to do regular exercise. As a result I have lost over 10 pounds and I feel much better. I've also started to eat more healthfully. I used to eat a lot of fast food, but now I do my own shopping. I buy lots of fruits and vegetables and cook them at home.Of course, not all the changes have been that easy. For example, I don't feel as secure financially as I used to. When I was working as a manager, I never worried much about money. I could always count on getting my paycheck every two weeks. Working freelance, I don't have a regular paycheck. So now I have to make sure there's enough money until the next check arrives. All in all, I really like my current lifestyle. Of course, that doesn't mean I'll never want to have a "regular" job. But for now, at least, it suits me.[选项][答案][解析][难度]难[分数]15[子题][子题型][题干] Why did the author decide to become a freelance writer?[选项]A. He had always liked writing.B. When their kids ask them what they do at work, they can give a simple, direct answer: “I put out fires” or “I fix sick people” or “I teach primary school”. As a theoretical(理论的)physicist, I nerve had this luck. Society has come to expect many things from the physicists. It used to be that we only had to discover the basic laws of the world and supply the techniques that would power the next Silicon Valley (硅谷).With these expectations we were fairly comfortable: they are the sorts of things we think we know how to do. What makes us uncomfortable-and what makes it hard for us to tell our kids what we’re up to –is that in this century we have become ,though unwillingly, gurus on questions such as “What is that nature of Reality(现实)?”We now deal with a whole new class of problem. We ask how the world began and what the nature of matter is. The answers we are coming up with are just not easy to comprehend for the average person. So,when physicists get out of their cars in the morning, have a cup of coffee andsit down in front of their computers, they leave a familiar world and enter a place where things act In strange ways that are impossible for ordinary people to understand.[选项][答案][解析][难度]难[分数]15[子题][子题型][题干] According to the passage, in a way physicists are ##.[选项]A. intelligentB. comfortableC. strangeD. unlucky[答案] D[解析][分数]3[子题型][题干] Judging from the context, the word “guru” in the first paragraph most probably means a person ##.[选项]A. who acts as a teacher and answers big questionsB. Directions:You will hear a passage three times. When the passage is read for thefirst time, you should listen carefully for its general idea. When the passage is readfor the second time, you are required to fill in the blanks numbered from 11-20 withthe exact words you have just heard. When the passage is read for the third time, you should check what you have written. (10 points)There are times when living with adolescents can make you feel really exhausted. It seems as if nothing you do is right. You wonder what could be wrong with your once lovable obedient child, and whether you will ever get back to a friendly relationship again It is important to remember that you have put a lot of effort into earlier parenting and laying the. foundations for your teenager's development. The effort will not be wasted and you need to have faith in your past efforts. The major task of a teenager is to become an independent and responsible adult and most teenagers eventually achieve this and go on to have teenage children of their own. Providing you can hang in there, and at the same time keep your own sense of balance your teenager will most likely eventually emerge as a likeable adult.Reading ComprehensionDirections: There are two passages in this part. Each passage is followed by somequestions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices. Clickon the best choice. (20 points)Passage OneA public opinion poll published by The Children's Society reveals increasing concern aboutchildren's mental health and well being. When asked to rate children's happiness today compared to when they were growing up, only one in ten respondents felt children nowadayswere happier.Adults' concerns echo what children themselves have told The Good Childhood Inquiry. In a survey of 8,000 14-16 year olds, carried out by The Children's Society as part of theinquiry, 27% of young people agreed with the statement 'I often feel depressed'.A number of children submitting evidence commented on the importance of being freefrom stress, pressure and worry. In some cases they explicitly linked pressure to school, theinfluence of peers, family expectations. Interestingly when asked what has the most negativeimpact on children's well-being generally, adults responding to the poll rated family breakdown and conflict and peer pressure highly.Considering the issue of how to promote better mental health and well being for children, Professor Stephen Scott, Institute of Psychiatry and an inquiry panel member said,"Many respondents to the inquiry shared the belief that well being depends on good relationships, especially within the family; on a sense of purpose and on freedom. To achievethis, child mental health and well being must be everybody's business. Support for parents iscrucial; schooling has a key part to play; and providing the effective treatments now availablefor children with mental health problems takes time, skill and resources."There is a growing recognition of the true cost of neglecting children's mental healthand well being. Too often mental health and well being have been dismissed as being of littleimportance but there is now an understanding that if we want to give children a better childhood these matters must be addressed. We now need to translate this growing concerninto action and investment in the necessary support services.21. What is the purpose of the public opinion poll published by The Children's Society?A. What is the author's attitude towards children's mental well being?A. Indifferent.B. Concerned.C. Satisfied.D. Objective.Passage TwoParents say that children do not show them proper respect and obedience, while children complain that their parents do not understand them. This phenomenon is often referred to as the generation gap. What then are the causes of the generation gap?One important cause of the generation gap is the chance that young people have tochoose their way of life. In more traditional societies, when children grew up, they were expected to live in the same area as their parents, to marry people that their parents knewand agreed to, and to continue the family occupation. In modern society, young people oftentravel a great distance for their education, move out of the family at an early age, marry orlive with people whom their parents have never met, and choose occupations different fromthose of their parents. In the easily changing society, parents often expect their children to do better thanthey did: to find better jobs, to make more money; and to do all the things that they wereunable to do. Often, however, the strong expectation that parents have on their children areanother cause of the disagreement between them. Often, they discover that they have verylittle in common with each other. Finally, the speed at which changes take place in the modern society is another causeof the gap between the generations. In a traditional culture, elderly people were valued fortheir wisdom, but in modern society, the lifetime knowledge may become out of date overnight. The young and the old seem to live in two very different worlds, separated bydifferent skills and abilities. No doubt, the generation gap will continue to be a problem of our future life for sometime. Its causes are rooted in the changes of our society, and in the rapid speed at which thesociety changes.26. Which of the following phenomena can be referred to as the generation gap?A. Children are not obedient and don't listen to their parents'suggestions.B. Children are always complaining that their parents are too strict.c. There is a mutual understanding between parents and children.D. Parents and children can't easily understand each other.27. Young people used to _____.A. live near to their parents' homeB. go far away from their hometown for further educationC. choose jobs different from those of their parentsD. move out of their parents' home at an early age28. What do parents expect their children to do?A. To earn enough money.B. To be able to do what they were able to.C. To have promising jobs.D. To be more successful or accomplished than they were.29. What is NOT the reason that causes generation gap?A. Young people are more likely to choose their own ways of life.B. Parents have very strong expectations on their children.C. The modern society is changing at an unbelievable speed in many aspects.D. Parents and children share little in common.30. Why can't the generation gap be reduced or bridged?A. Because of lack of skills and abilities.B. Because of the rapid changing society.C. Because of lack of wisdom.D. Because of misunderstanding between parents and childrenVocabulary and StructureDirections: Each of the following sentences is provided with four choices.
