If current trends continue, experts predict annual vehicle thefts could exceed two million by the end of the decade.Vehicle theft is a common phenomenon, which has a direct impact on over four million victims a year. The cost is astonishing. Many police officials blame professional thieves for the high volume of the thefts. It is amajor money-maker for organized crime. Typically, stolen cars are taken to pieces and the parts sold to individuals. But as many as 200000 cars are smuggled out of the country every year. Most go to Latin America, the Middle East and Europe.Only about 15 percent car thefts result in an arrest, because few police departments routinely conduct in depth auto-investigations. When thieves are arrested, judges will often sentence them to probation, not immediately put them in prison because the prisons are overcrowded with violent criminals. One exception is a Michigan program that assigns 92 police officers to work full-time on the state‘s 65000 car theft cases a year. Since 1986, when the effort began, the state‘s auto-theft rate has fallen from second in the nation to ninth. How can you protect your car? If you live in a high-theft area or drive an expensive model, consider a security system. It may cost anywhere from $25 to$1,000. Some systems engage automatically? Between 1972 and 1978, federal support for the social and behavioral sciences fell 25 percent, while support for other areas of science rose 36 percent.Psychological, social and cultural studies pertaining to virtually everything that people treat as a problem in our civilization, the committee writes, play a large role. Paradoxically, one would think these would be times when social science research would be riding high. Yet eve though governments are more that alarmed about a variety of social problems, they are inclined to deal with them by trial and (often) error. The abuse of drugs is a widespread concern, but governments seem to with the qualifications of teachers and their salaries. If we lack an adequate understanding of drug abuse and educational processes, are we flying blind attempting to deal with these behaviors? What domains of your life could benefit from social and behavioral science research? For instance, are we concerned about crime? Consider that recent sociological research reveals that nearly half of all urban-dwelling American males can expect to be arrested for some non-traffic offense during their lives. However, a very small group of career predators are responsible for a grossly disproportionate share of all crimes committed. What does this insight suggest to you about American criminal Justice and prison policies. Sociological work also shows that most criminals halt their careers by age 25 to 30. In the last sentence of the passage, the word confinement is closest in meaning to the word_____ .A. fundsB. solutionC. researchD. imprisonmentPassage 3Writing to learn makes it possible to show learning in writing. Much of the writing you will do in college and at work will ask you to demonstrate what you have learned. The success of that demonstration will depend on, among other things, revising your writing to show your knowledge to best advantage. When you have begun to see what you want to say (frequently this becomes clear at the very end of a first draft), it is time to start thinking about how to present your ideas to others. It is time to start thinking about revising.Revising can be described as the most important (and frequently most neglecteD. part of writing. Novelists Doris Lessing has said that many novels miss greatness because authors are unwilling or unable to revise them. James Michener explains the importance of revision this way: I have never thought of myself as a good writer. Anyone who wants reassurance of that should read one of my first drafts. But I‘m one of the world‘s great revisers.Revising takes many forms. It means thinking about the audience for your writing. Who will read your work and why? It also means developing an overall plan for the writing that will make your ideas clear. Often the organization of a first draft will reflect your process of discovery, but that may not be the best way to present your ideas to someone else. Revising also gives attention to the style of language, to the structure of a paragraph, and to the shape of sentences and other forms that show learning to its best advantage.Writing to learn and writing to show learning are never, of course, entirely separate processes. Writers frequently consider issues of demonstrating learning while writing to learn, and writing to show learning often leads to new understandings. In drafting, for example, you may start thinking about what an audience will need to know in order to understand your point and change a word or a phrase to make your meaning clearer. But understanding the differences between writing to learn and writing to show learning is central to seeing writing as a process.9. The author thinks that revising starts when _____ .A. you want to show what you knowB. you think about your audienceC. you have discovered your ideaD. you have developed an overall writing plan10. The chief purpose in revising your writing is for you to _____ .A. learn in the course of writingB. add new ideas to your writingC. show your learning to its best advantageD. use an appropriate style of language11. What Doris Lessing said helps to support the idea that _____ .A. he is one of the wo rld‘s great revisersB. he is not a good writerC. revising is very importantD. many writers are unwilling to revise their works12. The passage is mainly about _____ .A. the importance of revisingB. the importance of writingC. how to compose good writingD. how to revise your writingPassage 4That an ecological crisis confronts humankind is now so central to our thinking that the notion that human beings adapt to their natural environment seems obvious. But ecological interpretations of world history are surprisingly recent. Sociologists, in attempting to classify societies, have looked increasingly to a people‘s relationship with their natural environment and, provide food, clothing, and shelter. Human beings meet these needs in a wide variety of environments, including deserts, rain forests, grasslands, and so on. Such environments are part of ecosystem, a complex web of interdependencies among organisms, communities of organisms, and the natural habitat. Some societal variation derives from the different demands made by different ecosystems. Customs and ways of life that would be adaptive in one ecosystem would be maladaptive in another. We confront a habitat and evolve a mode of existence not so much as lone individuals, but cooperatively as larger social units. Social organization and technology are our chief adaptive mechanisms. Social organization develops, as we create stable, ordered relationships and become infused with common cultural traits. Much depends on whether or not our values, norms, beliefs and institutions favor or foreclose new avenues of adaptation. Likewise, technology—the application of knowledge for practical weds—allows us to harness and change aspects of our environment. In its broadest sense, technology entails the practical arts and skills of human society. As technology has become more advanced, we have gained access to greater amounts of non-human energy (animal, water, fossil fuel, solar, and so on). In turn, new sources of energy have allowed our cultures to expand and change. Other changes follow as well.13. The author points out that differences in people‘s ways of life come from _____ .A. their cultural traditionsB. their adaptations to the environmentC. their demands for natural resourcesD. their notions about the environment14. Different ways of life exist among different peoples because of _____ .A. their adaptive valueB. their distinctive valueC. lack of better technologyD. mutual isolation15. Social organizations and technology develop as a result o f people‘s _____ .A. adaptation to the environmentB. attempt to change natureC. efforts to create peaceful societiesD. desire to create bigger societies16. The ultimate goal in developing technology is for people to _____ .A. get practical skills and artsB. obtain greater amounts of energyC. effect social changesD. create new culturesPassage 5The subject of my study is women who are initiating social change in a small region in Texas. The women are Mexican Americans who are, or were, migrant agricultural workers. There is more than one kind of innovation at work in the region, of course, but I have chosen to focus on three related patterns of family behavior. The pattern I life style represents how migrant farm workers of all nationalities lived in the past and how many continue to live. I treat this pattern as a baseline with which to compare the changes represented by pattern II and III. Families in pattern I work and travel in extended kin units, with the eldest male occupying the position of authority. Families are large eight or none children are not unusual and all members are economic contributors in this strategy of family migration. Families in pattern II manifest some differences in behavior while still maintaining aspects of pattern I. They continue to migrate but on a reduced scale, often modifying their schedules of migration to allow children to finish the school year. Parents in this pattern often find temporary local jobs as checkers to make up for lost farming income. Pattern II families usually have fewer children than do pattern I families. The greatest amount of change from pattern I, however, is in pattern III families, who no longer migrate at all. Both parents work full time in the area and have an average of three children. Children attend school for the entire year. In pattern III, the women in particular create new roles for themselves for which no local models exist. They no only work full time but may, in addition, return to school. They also assume a greater responsibility in family decisions than do women in the other patterns. Although these women are in the minority among residents of the region, they serve as role models for others, causing moderate changes to spread in their communities. Now opportunities have continued to be determined by pre-existing values. When federal jobs became available in the region, most involved working under the direction of female professionals such as teachers or nurses. Such positions were unaccepted to many men in the areabecause they were not accustomed to being subordinate to women. Women therefore took the jobs, at first, because the income was desperately needed. But some of the women decided to stay at their jobs, at first, after the family‘s distress was over. These w omen enjoyed their work, its responsibility, and the companionship of fellow women workers. The steady, relatively high income allowed their families to stop migrating. And, as the benefits to these women became increasingly apparent, they and their families became even more willing to consider changes in their lives that they would not have considered before.17. Which of the following titles best reflects the main focus of the passage?A. A Survey of Three Mexican-American Families at Work in Texas.B. Innovative Career Women: Effects on Family Unity.C. Changes in the Life-styles of Migrant Mexican-American Families.D. Farming of Family: The Unavoidable Choice for Migrant Farm Workers.18. All of the following statements about pattern II children express differences EXCEPT _____ .A. they migrate for part of each yearB. they spend less time contributing to family incomeC. they spend more months on schoolD. their parents sometimes work at jobs other than farming19. According to the passage, which of the following is NOT true of women in pattern III families?A. They earn a reliable and comparatively high income.B. They continue to work solely to meet the urgent needs of their family.C. They enjoy the fellowship involved in working with other womenD. They serve as models of behavior for others in the region.20. The author‘s attitude towards the three patterns of behavior mentioned in the passage is best described as one of _____ .A. great admirationB. unbiased objectivityC. dissatisfactionD. indifferencePassage 6If sustainable competitive advantage depends on work force skills, American firms have a problem. Human resource management is not traditionally seen as central to the competitive survival of the firm in the United States. Skill acquisition is considered as an individual responsibility. Labor is simply another factor of production to be hired-rented at the lowest possible cost-much as one buys raw materials or equipment. The lack of importance attached to human resource management can be seen in the corporation hierarchy. In an American firm the chief financial officer is almost always second incommand. The post of head of human resource managements is usually a specialized job, off at the edge of the corporate hierarchy. The executive who holds it is never consulted on major strategic decisions and has no chance to move up to Chief Executive Officer (CEO).By way of contrast, in Japan the head of human resource management is central-usually the second most important executive, after the CEO, in the firm‘s hierarchy. While American firms often talk about the vast amounts spent on training their work forces, in fact they invest less in the skill of their employees than do the Japanese or German firms. The money they do invest is also more highly concentrated on professional and managerial employees. And the limited investments that are made in training workers are also much more narrowly focused on the specific skills necessary to do the next job rather than on the basic background skills that make it possible to absorb new technologies. As a result, problems emerge when new breakthrough technologies arrive. If American workers, for example, take much longer to learn how to operate new flexible manufacturing stations than workers in Germany(as they do),the effective cost of those stations is lower in Germany than it is in the United Stated. More time is required before equipment is up and running at capacity, and the need for extensive retraining generates costs and creates bottlenecks that limit the speed with which new equipment can be employed. The result is a slower pace of technological change. And in the end the skills of the bottom half of the population affect the wages of the top half. If the bottom half can‘t effectively staff the processes that have to be operated, the management and professional jobs that go with these processes will disappear.21. Which of the following applies to the management of human resources in American companies?A. They hire people at the lowest cost regardless of their skills.B. They see the gaining of skills as their employees own business.C. They attach more importance to workers than to equipment.D. They only hire skilled workers because of keen competition.22. What is the position of the head of human resource management in an American firm?A. He is one of the most important executives in the firm.B. His post is likely to disappear when new technologies are introduced.C. He is directly under the chief financial executive.D. He has no authority in making important decisions in the firm.23. The money most American firms spend in training mainly goes to----.A. workers who can operate new equipmentB. technological and managerial staffC. workers who lack basic background skillsD. top executives.24. What is the main idea of the passage?A. American firms are different from Japanese and German firms in human resource management.B. Extensive retraining is indispensable to effective human resource management.C. The head of human resource management must be in the central position in a firm‘s hierarchy.D. The human resource management strategies of American firms affect their competitive capacity.Passage 7Internet is a vast network of computers that connects many of the world‘s businesses, institutions, and individuals. The Internet, which means interconnected network of networks, links tens of thousands of smaller computer networks. These networks transmit huge amounts of information in the form of words, images, and sounds. The Internet was information on virtually every topic. Network users can search through sources ranging from vast databases to small electronic ―bulletin boards ,‖where users form discussion groups around common interests. Much of the Internet‘s traffic consists of messages sent from one computer user to another. These messages are called electronic mail or email. Internet users have electronic addresses that allow them to send and receive email. Other uses of the network include obtaining news, joining electronic debates, and playing electronic games. One feature of the Internet, known as the World Wide Web, provides graphics, audio, and video to enhance the information in its documents. These documents cover a vast number of topics.People usually access the Internet with a device called a modem. Modems connect computers to the network through telephone lines. Much of the Internet operates through worldwide telephone networks of fiber-optic cables. These cables contain hair-thin strands of glass that carry data as pulses of light. They can transmit thousands of times more data than local phone lines, most of which consist of copper wires. The history of the Internet began in the 1960s.At that time, the Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA. of the United States Department of Defense developed a network of computers called ARPA net. Originally, ARPA net connected only military and government computer systems. Its purpose was to make these systems secure in the event of a disaster or was. Soon after the creation of ARPA net, universities and other institutions developed their own computer networks. These networks eventually were merged with ARPA net to form the Internet. By the 1990s,anyone with a computer, modem, and Internet software could link up to the Internet. In the future, the Internet will probably grow more sophisticated as computer technology becomes more powerful. Many experts believe the Internet may become part of a larger network called the information superhighway. This network, still under development, would link computers with telephone companies, cable television stations, and other communication systems. People could bank, shop, watch TV, and perform many other activities through the network.25 .This passage is about the------of the Internet.A future.B general introductionC use.D history.26 .Which of the following statements about the Internet is true?A. ARPA was the first net used by American universities and institutions.B. The history of the Internet can be traced back to fifty years ago.C. The purpose of the Internet is to protect the world in the event of war.D. ARPA net formed the foundation of the Internet nowadays...。

It is the financial center of the exerting a significant influence upon the world’s economy. Hetty Green, who was born in 1835, was nicknamed the Wizard (奇才)of Wall Street. She became almost a legendary figure in Wall Street, because she made a lot of money buying and selling shares in companies.Hetty Green began making money when her father died and she inherited all his money. By investing it wisely, she soon built up her fortune to over 100 million dollars. However, she hated spending money on herself or on her family. Actually, she hated spending money on everything except buying shares. She was so mean that when her son Edward broke his leg, she would notsend for a doctor. She did not want to have to pay a doctor’s bill. She refused to send her son to a good hospital. Instead, she took the boy to a free charity hospital. There he did not get very good treatment and, to save his life, he had to have his leg cut off. Still his mother would not pay for proper hospital treatment. The 19th-century discovery of what appeared to be geometric designs cut across the surface was taken as evidence. The lines were thought to have been a system of canals that had been built to irrigate the surface. It is now clear t hat “canals” —perhaps the most spectacular geologic features of Mars —are natural valleys where ancient rivers once flowed.Another fragmented idea concerns the planet’s seasonal changes in color. Once attributed to the rapid spread of some life-form, these shifts are now known to develop from the movement of fine dust in the atmosphere.By the close of the 20th century none of the many experiments conducted by spacecraft had ever found persuasive evidence of life. Nevertheless, speculation continued over the existence of some form of life, in either the present or the past. In 1996 scientists discovered organic compounds and minerals in a meteorite(陨石), consisting of Martian rock, that collided with Earth around 11,000 . These compounds suggest that Mars may have been inhabited by organisms more than three billion years ago.36. Why did people in the 19th century believe the existence of intelligent life on Mars?A. Because the surface of Mars seemed to be geometric.B. Because the lines were drawn across the surface of theplanet.C. Because a system of canals was thought to be there.D. Because it was the Martians that built the canals.37. The “canals” on Mars have proved to be ______ according to the passage.A. the minor geologic characteristic of MarsB. natural valleys on the surface of MarsC. rivers that have kept flowing since ancient timesD. a system that irrigates the whole surface38. What were the Mars’ seasonal changes in color believed to be?A. The natural changes on the planet.B. The seasonal cycles.C. The movement of some life form.D. The storm of dust in its atmosphere.39. How is the 1996 discovery related to the possible existence of organisms on Mars?A. The meteorite containing organic compounds is part of Mars.B. A Martian rock struck Earth about 11,000 years ago.C. The organisms came back to life after the collision with Earth.D. The inhabiting organisms appeared more than three billion years ago.40. How many arguments in this passage lead to the belief of the existence of life on Mars?A. Two.B. Three.C. Four.D. Five.Passage 3Have you ever wondered why different animals or pests have their particular colors? Colors in them seem to be used mainly to protect themselves.Birds, especially seagulls, are very fond of locusts, but birds cannot easily catch locusts because locusts change their colors together with the change of the color of crops. When crops are green, locusts look green. But when crops are ripe, locusts take on exactly the same brown color as crops have. Some other pests with different colors from plants are usually easily found and eaten by their enemies. So they have to hide themselves in terror for lives and appear only at night. If you study the animal life in any part of the world, you will find the main use of coloring is to protect themselves. Bears, wolves and other beasts move quietly through forests. They are usually invisible to the eyes of hunters, because they have the color much like the barks of trees. An even more strange act remains to be noticed. A kind of fish living in seas can send out a kind of very black liquid when it faces danger. While the liquid spreads over, its enemies cannot find it, and it immediately swims away. Thus, it has existed up to now though it is not powerful at all.41. This passage mainly talks about ______.A. the change of color in locustsB. the protective coloration of animals and pestsC. how a certain sea fish protects itselfD. animals or pests can dye themselves different colors42. Locusts are not easily wiped out by their enemies because ______.A. they are powerful enoughB. they are dangerous to their enemiesC. they take on the same colors as cropsD. they fly extraordinarily fast43. The pests that have different colors from plants usually appear at night because ______.A. birds take their rest when night comesB. their enemies can easily find them and eat themC. they have the habit of coming out in darknessD. it’s easy for them to destroy plants in darkness44. Bears and wolves have the same colors as barks of trees because ______.A. they fear other beastsB. they prefer brown or grey colorsC. they enjoy walking through forests quietlyD. the colors help prevent themselves from being noticed45. A certain fish living in seas has lived through millions of years because ______.A. it is the most powerful in the seaB. it can swim much faster than any other fishC. it can send out a kind of liquid which makes its enemies unable to find itD. it can send out a kind of liquid which can kill its enemiesPassage 4High school dropouts(辍学者)earn an average of $ 9,000 less per year than graduates. Now a new study dispels a common belief why they quit. It’s much more basic than flunking out(不及格).Society tends to think of high school dropouts as kids who just can’t cut it. They are lazy, and perhaps not two bright. So researchers were surprised when they asked more than 450 kidswho quit school about why they left.“The vast majority actually had passing grades and they were confident that they could havegraduated from h igh school.” John Bridgeland, the executive researcher said. About 1 million teens leave school each year. Only about half of African-American and Hispanic(美籍西班牙的)student will receive a diploma, and actually all dropouts come to regret their decision. So,if failing grades don’t explain why these kids quit, what does? Again,John Bridgeland: “The most dependable finding was that they were bored.”“They found classes uninteresting; they weren’t inspired or motivated. They didn’t see any direct connection between what they were learning in the classroom to their own lives, or to their career aspirations.”The study found that most teens who do drop out wait until they turn sixteen, which happens to be the age at which most states allow students to quit. In the US,only one state,New Mexico, has a law requiring teenagers to stay in high school until they graduate. Only four states: California, Tennessee, T exas and Utah, plus the District of Columbia, require school attendance until age 18, no exceptions, another researcher, says raising the compulsory attendance age may be one way to keep more kids in school.“As these dropouts look back, they realize they’ve made a mistake. And anything that sort of gives these people an extra push to stick it out and it through to the end, is probably helpful measure.”New Hampshire may be the next state to raise its school attendance age to 18. But critics say that forcing the students unwilling to continue their studies to stay in school misses thepoint-the need for reform. It's been called for to reinvent high school education to make it more challenging and relevant, and to ensure that kids who do stick it out receive a diploma that actually means something.46. Most high school students drop out of school because__.A. they have failing gradesB. they take no interest in classesC. they are discriminated againstD. they are lazy and not intelligent47. According to the passage, which state has a law requiring school attendance until they graduate?A. New HampshireB. UtahC. New MexicoD. The District of Columbia48. The underlined words “stick it out” probably means “__”.A. complete schoolingB. solve the problemC. love having classesD. believe in themselves49. In the last paragraph, the writer is trying to_________.A. analyze the reason why students quit schoolB. suggest raising the compulsory attendance ageC. raise awareness of reforming high school educationD. wish to make laws to guarantee no education50. From the passage,we can infer the following EXCEPT that_.A. the grades of most dropouts at school were acceptableB. on average dropouts cannot get good jobsC. classes don't appeal to dropoutsD. about 500, 000 high school dropouts are black and SpanishPassage 5People living on parts of the south coast of England face a serious problem. In 1993,the owners of a large hotel and of several houses discovered, to their horror, that their gardens had disappeared overnight. The sea had eaten into the soft limestone cliffs on which they had been built. While experts were studying the problem, the hotel and several houses disappeared altogether, sliding down the cliff and into the sea.Erosion(侵蚀)of the white cliffs along the south coast of England has always been a problem but it has become more serious in recent years. Dozens of homes have had to be abandoned as the sea has crept farther and farther inland. Experts have studied the areas most affected and have drawn up a map for local people, forecasting the year in which their homes will be swallowed up by the hungry sea.Angry owners have called on the Government to erect sea defenses to protect their homes. Government surveyors have pointed out that in most cases, this is impossible. New sea walls would cost hundreds of millions of pounds and would merely make the waves and currents go further along the coast, shifting the problem from one area to another. The danger is likely to continue, they say, until the waves reach an inland area of hard rock which will not be eaten as limestone is. Meanwhile,if you want to buy a cheap house with an uncertain future, apply to a house agent in one of the threatened areas on the south coast of England. You can get a house for a knockdown price but it mayturn out to be a knockdown home.51. What is the cause of the problem that people living on parts of the south coast of England face?A. In many American universities the total work for a degree consists of thirty-six courses each lasting for one semester. A typical course consists of three classes per week for fifteen weeks; while attending a university a student will probably attend four or five courses during each semester. Normally a student would expect to take four years attending two semesters each year. It is possible to spread the period of work for the degree over a longer period. It is also possible for a student to move between one university and another during his degree course, though this is not in fact done as a regular practice. For every course that he follows a student is given a grade, which is recorded, and the record is available for the student to show to prospective employers. All this imposes a constant pressure and strain of work, but in spite of this some students still find time for great activity in student affairs. Elections to positions in student organizations arouse much enthusiasm. The effective work of maintaining discipline is usually performed by students who advise the academic authorities. Any student who is thought to have broken the rules, for example, by cheating has to appear before a student court. With the enormous numbers of students, the operation of the system does involve a certain amount of activity. A student who has held one of these positions of authority is much respected and it will be of benefit to him later in his career.56. They have made many audio and video recordings , matching the sound and behaviorof the elephants in order to understand the meaning from observed patterns.B Their findings are that elephants use many senses tocommunicate: sight, smell ,taste , hearing, and touch? For example, when two female elephants greet each other after along separation, they stand side by side, flapping their ears , touching and smelling each1367other with their trunks , making rumbling sounds? The longer they've been separated, thelouder and more demonstrative they act when they meet again.C Elephant rumbling is a low , infrasonic sound of 12-20 Hertz CHz) that humans cannot hear. C Human range is between 20-20,000 Hz.) Researchers have divided thisrumbling into three main signals: contact, "Let's go," and mating. The contact call is usedby elephants that are miles away to communicate their location to otherherds? All day, female leaders rumble to other groups , who rumble back. They stay far apart to ensureenough food for all the members and later meet at a watering hole and greet each other.D Another type of rumbling is the ”Let's go n signal of a head female when shewants to leave a place after drinking or resting. Facing the direction she wants to go, sherumbles until the others begin to answer and follow her. The third type is the mating rumblethat a male in musth emits. Females in a herd usually answer him , although none of themmay be receptive , because they mate only once every four years. However, when the malehears them , he travels to the group to assess the situation.E A final interesting form of communication among elephants is the way they acttoward their dead .If they come upon elephant bones , they stand around touching the skullsand tusks with their trunks. When researchers left the bones of other large animals, likerhinos or buHaloes, in these places, elephants examined them briefly, but they touched onlythe elephant remains. In India, where elephants are often killed by trains , other elephantscome to the scene to caress and mourn the dead ones?Decide whether the following statements are true or false. 冀教版英语八年级上册期末考试精选—阅读理解(一)Saturday, March 18thWe have arrived in the hot, wet city of Bangkok. This is our first trip to Thailand (秦国).All the different smells make us want to try the food. We are going to eat something special for dinner tonight. The hotel we are staying in is cheap, and very clean. We plan to stay here for a few days, visit some places in the city, and then travel to Chiang Mai in the north.Tuesday, March 21stBangkok is wonderful and surprising! The places are interesting. We visited the famous market which was on water, and saw a lot of fruit and vegetables. Everything is so colorful, and we have taken hundreds of photos already! Later today we will leave for Chiang Mai. We will take the train north, stay in Chiang Mai for two days, and then catch a bus to Chiang Rai.Friday, March 24thOur trip to Chiang Rai was long and boring. We visited a small village in the mountains. The village people here love the quiet life--no computers or phones. They are the kindest people I have ever met. They always smile and say "hello”. Kathy and I can only speak a few words of Thai, so smiling is the best way to show our kindness. I feel good here and hope to be able to come back next year.1. It seems that visitors_________ in Bangkok.A.often feel hungryB.can always find cheap thingsC.can't take any photosD.can enjoy themselves3. The writer thinks people in Chiang Rai are very ___________.A. strangeB.friendlyC.activeD.smartBThe universe is a big place. It is hard to believe that humans would be the only intelligent life. So scientists have been searching outer space for years, hoping to find signs of alien (外星人)life. They use radio telescopes to search the sky for signals (信号) from other civilizations (文明). It is called SETI. SETI has been working for over half a century, but so far they haven't heard any alien messages. Scientists suggested aliens might not want to contact (联系) us but could reply to a message we send. So scientists sent radio signals into the universe, hoping one day they would be picked up by aliep technology. These scientists call themselves METI.Both ME TI and SETI want to prove that we are not alone in the universe. But what if the“alien phone" rings one day? Should we reply to it?British scientist Stephen Hawking thinks we should not answer because aliens could be dangerous. Hawking said that aliens could visit our solar system in search of resources (资源).“If aliens ever visit us, I think theresult would be much like when Christopher Columbus first landed in America, which didn't turn out very well for the American Indians".But other scientists think we have no need to worry. David Morrison, a NASA scientist, said that if an alien radio signal reaches us from a distant planet hundreds or thousands of light-years away, then that civilization would have to be more advanced than ours.4.What does "they” refer to in the third paragraph?A. Scientists.B.Aliens.C.Radio signals.D.Americans.5.Why did Stephen Hawking think that aliens would be dangerous?A.Because he thought aliens would rule the solar system.B.Because he thought aliens would come to search for resources.C. Difficult workplace requires different skills. If you would like to work as a teacher, you might need to be able to speak the language of the country you are going to (or know some basic phrases). If you want to help at a building site (地点),you should have building or carpentry (木工) skills. This doesn't mean that you need to be an expert (专家) before going over. However, having some knowledge of the work you are doing can help you feel a sense of purpose, instead of confusion (困惑) when you arrive.7. What does the writer think of volunteering overseas?A. At that time women were de- pendents in the eyes of the law, and they did not have the rights of adults. A woman had no prop- erty rights, even over what she had got it from her mother or father or over any wages that she earned. Decisions about family __ and about the children were made by her husband, the“head of the family".The first public protests(情愿) against the low position of women were made in the 1830s. In1848 the leaders of this movement( some of whom were for antislavery(反对__) activities as well) assembled the first Women's Rights Convention, demanding equality. In this struggle as well as,in the long, hard fight for women' s vote, those who took part in the activities were laughed at and insulted(侮辱) . They were said to be immoral( 违反伦理的), and their ideas were considered dangerous to society.Nevertheless by 1900 women had won the right to vote in several states; and in 1920 the Nine- teenth Amendment to the Constitution granted them the right to vote throughout the United States. Dickens created some unforgettable characters. You must have heard of or even read some of his novels:Oliver Twist, A Christmas Carol and A Tale of Two Cities. A Tale of Two Cities has sold more than 200 million copies. Since 1897, there have been more than 300 film and TV adaptations of Dickens' works. A Christmas Carol alone has had nearly 50.Natalie Mcknight is a literature professor who studies Dickens and his works. In his works, he paid special attention to the “little man” at the bottom of society in the UK, which deeply showed the social reality at that time. A Christmas Carol, for example, was written to make every reader think about how they could make a difference to their society.People always enjoy works that make them laugh, cry and think. Many other 19thcentury novelists wrote entertaining works. However, few of them worked as hard as Dickens to touch the readers deeply.Dickens wrote about situations and emotions that still interest people today. But the little stream answered, “That’s because a breeze can fly, but I cannot.”“That’s because you stick to what you are. Let yourself evaporate (蒸发) into the breeze, and it can take you across,” said the desert. “Give up what I am now? No! No!” The little stream could not accept this idea. “The breeze can carry the vapor (蒸汽) across the desert and let it leave as rain. 英语阅读2期末复习资料Part OnePassage lTh is is a short passage about the wildebeest migration.Every year around April , many thousands of wildebeest gather together on the Serengeti Plains in Tanzania in preparation for their long journey northwards. Although it is often referred to as ‘The Migration' , this great movement of animals is an endless year - round trek dictated by the seasons and the search for fresh grass and water.By early July the long straggling columns of wildebeest , along with large numbers of zebra , begin to reach the Mara Reserve. They can enter anywhere and once inside their movements are erratic according to where forage is best. However, the herds do have one or two favorite river crossing places and after the Mara grasses have been gazed to the ground , they use these to move northwards out of the reserve.Weak animals rarely survive the river crossings. Many are crushed to death by the sheer weight of numbers and some are eaten by huge crocodiles. In late September. the herds begin to re- form for the journey back to the SerengetiPlains. They arrive three months later and begin calving.Read Passage 1 and decide whether the following statements are True or False.1. William. had been murdered. All the family was shocked when Justine Moritz , the boy' s nanny , was accused of the crime and Frankenstein was horrified when she was executed for the murder because he felt that his monster had done it , not Justine. Throughout the following months , Frankenstein became more and more depressed. Then , one day when he was traveling in the mountains , trying to forget his troubles , Frankenstein suddenly met the monster. He shouted furiously at him , accusing him of the crime, and telling him to stay away from him and his family. But the monster insisted on talking to his creator and told him the sad story of his life since he had run away from the laboratory where Frankenstein had made him.The monster said that he had tried , in vain , to attach himself to humans , but nobody would have anything to do with him , because they found him so ugly and frightening. He told Frankenstein that even when he had saved a child who was drowning in a river , nobody thanked him. In fact , the father shot him in the shoulder because he was afraid of him.The monster became more and more lonely and more and more unhappy. Then , by chance , he came across William playing in a filed and he decided to capture the boy and try to make him become his friend. I can start all over again1 The recent successful cloning of ‘Do lly , ' a sheep , has stunned the world.2 I was excited about the idea of having a clone of myself in the beginning: I might startlife all over again and redress the mistakes made in the past , and then I could live longer to see a better future.3 It is a dream that has fascinated so many people for so long , as evidenced by numerouspopular science fiction stories featuring this theme and countless literary works on thealter-ego.4 For one thing , Eve is said to have been made from one of Adam' s ribs. The legend ofher beginning might be regarded as the earliest example of cloning. So I am somewhatsurprised to see governments worldwide reacting so negatively when scientists announcedthat they have made substantial progress in this field of science.5 Due to many limitations , the technique can' t be widely applied in the near future , butunder the influence of confusion and fear , people are already speculating about cloning's far- reaching consequences and taking precautionary measures against the possible misuses ofthe new technological breakthrough.6 ‘People fear that the world would be in a mess if human beings are cloned some day , ' said Zhai Zhonghe, a well- known biologist and academician at the Chinese Academy of Sc iences.7 Ian Wilmut , the embryologist who led the Roslin Institute team in Britain thatsuccessfully cloned ‘ Dolly ' from a single cell on another ewe' s udder , announced thatcloning humans was ‘ probably ' possible.8 ‘A single terminal cell is sufficient for duplicating the whole animal , that' s somethingnew , ' said Zhai. Genetically , the reproduction from a single cell is a complete copy of thetissue donor.9 Meanwhile , US scientists have declared that they have successfully cloned a monkey ,using an eight-cell embryo , marking the first time that an animal closely resembling humanshas ever been cloned.10 Many governments in the world , in a show of moral responsibility , have moved quicklyto discourage this new development.11 The United States banned the federal funding of cloning , and Germany called for aworld- wide ban on cloning human beings.12 Danish scientists said they were halting experiments pending a full debate on the issue. The It alian government said human cloning should be outlawed and announced a temporaryban in It aly on all forms of human or animal experiments linked with cloning. In China, many legislators attending the Eighth National People' s Congress were soliciting opinionsfrom scientists.13 Chinese scientists suggested that legislation is necessary to control potential dangersthat may arise from the newly developed cloning technology , and many have proposed thatlaws be approved to control t14 Technological breakthroughs always create new taboos and give an insight into new dimensions of human beings , yet somehow human beings are able to adjust their mindset tothe new reality after an initial wave of panic , just as they have come to terms withcontraception and artificial fertilization.15 If the new technology can be widely applied , it could be used to save endangeredanimals , cultivate better species and replicate transgenic animals of medical and scientificvalue.Read Passage 3 and then choose the best answer that may complete each of the statements below according to the passage.11. The message at events this year is "Live and LetLi ve. " The aim is to end improper treatment of people with HIV and AIDS. Experts say such discrimination remains a barrier to prevention and treatment. The United Nations reported last week that the spread of AIDS shows no signs of easing. It says an estimated 40 million people are living with the HIV virus. These include 2. 5 million children.Worldwide , the report said that 6 million people became infected with HIV and 5 milliondied in 2010 - the most ever.Doctor Peter Piot heads the United Nations AIDS program. He says AIDS is spreadingfastest in Eastern Europe , especially Russia. The Caribbean continues to experience high levels of infection. And , he says there could be major increases in China and India. One out of five adults in southern Africa is living with HIV or AIDS. So ut hern Africaremains the worst affected part of the world. But Doctor Piot says there is a sharp increase in parts of Western Africa , such as in Cameroon and Nigeria , and in parts of Southern Asia and Southeast Asia , such as India and Thailand.Sexual contact , infected blood and the sharing of injection needles can all spread theAIDS virus. AIDS was first discovered in the 1980s. Now , more women than men become infected with HIV. And Doctor Piot warns that the ability of countries to provide services has dropped as many health workers become infected. The UN says South Africa had more people with HIV at the end of last year than anyother country. It had an estimated 5. 3 million cases , about eleven percent of the population. Last month South Africa announced a plan to provide anti - retroviral medicines for free. These drugs restrain the spread of the virus.South Africa says it hopes to have anti-AIDS centers open in every health district withina year and in every local area within five years. The plan also includes money for public education and training for health care workers.Until now , the government has said the drugs cost too much and can cause harm. However, the cost of three AIDS drugs taken as a combination will be cut by almost onethird. This will happen under an agreement negotiated by the Clinton Foundation.
