As a doctoral candidate at the University of Chicago in Illinois, I worked to design safer, more effective materials for vaccine delivery. Although I had been productive early in my graduate career, my long hours and hard work were no longer translating into success in the laboratory, and I felt hopeless about achieving my goals. Something had to change. As I began to search for the cause of my struggles, I became increasingly aware that my “quiet time” at the lab bench — for instance, when I was running columns or experiments — was anything but. Instead of thinking about science, I was watching television or interacting with social media on my smartphone. Although I could cover up this inefficiency with longer hours, my work felt chaotic (混乱的) and disorganized. I would come home from a long day in the lab and respondto e-mails or messages over dinner or in bed. This all came to a head last summer, when my inability to balance work and life led me to seek help from the university’s student mental-health services.Through a combination of consultation and personal reflection, I came to understand my problem. To regain my focus, I chose to reduce my connectivity by using a basic mobile phone without an Internet connection during work hours, and removing unnecessary apps from my smartphone when I did use it.Underscoring the addictive nature of smartphones, I experienced symptoms of withdrawal when I first did this. With time, however, I began to make practical use of my quiet time. I started reading papers during long experiments, and developed a habit of writing in my down time.Perhaps most importantly, I have felt my anxiety decrease and my productivity and creativity improve dramatically, trading my chaotic work-life relationship for one with clearer boundaries and plenty of new scientific ideas. Now, even when I do carry my smartphone, I feel less forced to check for e-mails or messages, and can concentrate more closely on whatever task is at hand.4. What does the underlined part “hit a rut” in paragra ph 1 mean?A. Stopped progressing smoothly.B. Had very slow reactions.C. Accepted hard work’s value.D. Overcame a big problem.5. What made the author struggle?A. Running columns or experiments.B. His inability to get mental-health services.C. Replying to e-mails or messages.D. His addiction to the phone.6. What did the author choose to do during his quiet time later?A. Reflect on his successes and failures.B. Learn practical writing.C. Watch television news.D. Do some reading.7. How does the author feel now?A. More courageous.B. More sociable.C. More focused.D. More understanding.CWhen the company OpenAI developed its new artificial intelligence (AI) program, ChatGPT, in late 2022, educators began to worry. ChatGPT could create text that seemed like a human wrote it. How could teachers discover whether students were using language created by an AI chatbot to cheat on a writing task?As a linguist who studies the effects of technology on how people read, write and think, I believe there are other more pressing concerns besides cheating. These include whether AI, more generally, threatens student writing skills, the value of writing as a process, and the importance of regarding writing as a tool for thinking. As part of my research on the effects of AI on human writing, I surveyed young adults in the U.S. about some issues related to those effects. One participant said that at some point if you depend on predictive text, you’re going to lose your spelling abilities. Enter “Was Rom” into a Google search and you’re given a list of choices like “Was Rome built in a day”. Type “ple” into a text message and you’re offered “please” and “plenty”. These tools complete our sentences automatically, giving us little chance to think about our spelling, and continuously asking us to follow their suggestions.Evan Selinger, a philosopher, worried that predictive texting reduces the power of writing as a form of mental activity and personal expression. “By encouraging us not to think too deeply about our words, predictive technology may change how we deal with each other,” Selinger wrote. “We give others more algorithms (算法) and less of ourselves. Automation can stop us thinking and the resulting text didn’t feel like mine anymore.”I asked ChatGPT whether it was a threat to humans’ motivation to write. The bot responded: “There will always be a demand for creative, original content that requires the unique viewpoint of a human writer.” It continued: “Writing serves many purposes beyond just the creation of content, such as self-expression, communication, and personal growth, which can continue to encourage people to write even if certain types of writing can be automated.”I was glad to find the program had seemingly admitted its limitations.8. What is the author’s main concern about ChatGPT?A. Whether it will lead to students’ cheating.B. Whether it will shape students’ writing style.C. How students will make use of it at school.D. What effects it will have on students’ writing.9. What will predictive technology do to us according to Evan Selinger?A. Give us more creative ideas.B. Make us write like a machine.C. Encourage us to think more deeply.D. Make us tend to ignore grammatical mistakes.10. What can we learn from ChatGPT’s response?A. Writing will become completely automated.B. Robots will work with humans in writing.C. Robot writing will become more creative.D. Human writing will still matter a lot.11. What can be the best title for the text?A. What impact will AI bring to writing?B. What is the future of modern literature?C. How to improve writing with AI’s help?D. How to apply AI technology to education?DTwo-thirds of the world population lives under conditions where the freshwater demand is more than twice the natural water availability for at least one month per year. According to official statistics, one billion of those live in India and 0.9 billion live in China. Other areas facing this problem for longer periods include Bangladesh (130 million people), the western and southern states of the USA (130 million), Pakistan (120 million), Nigeria (110 million), and Mexico (90 million).Communities use a range of techniques to overcome this issue. In dry summers, those near the coast can desalinate (淡化) seawater, although the process requires a large amount of energy and expenditure. Some remote inland communities have alternative methods that suit their particular conditions. For example, many high-altitude Chilean communities in the Andes use fog collectors, specialized nets that can gather just a few liters a day.Elsewhere, there’s another option available. Researchers at ETH Zurich have developed a new device that passively harvests water from the air around the clock. The device is made up of a specially coated glass pane (玻璃板) that reflects solar radiation and also radiates away its own heat. In doing so, it cools down by as much as 15 degrees Celsius below the surrounding temperatures. This difference in temperature between the air and the pane causes water vapor to condense (凝结) on its underside, which can then be easily collected.Tests so far have been conducted on a university building in Zurich and suggest that the device can produce twice as much water per day as other passive water-collection technologies. Under ideal conditions, researchers harvested 0.53 decilitres of water per square metre of the surface per hour. “That’s close to the theoretical maximum value of 0.6 decilitres per hour, which is physically impossible to exceed,” says Iwan Hachler, a doctoral student who is working on the technology. The zero-energy input of the set-up could make it suitable for use in developing countries, particularly in remote communities where water shortage is often combined with power shortages. The scientists are hopeful that the device could be used with other water-collection methods, such as desalination, to increase productivity.12. What does the author want to tell us by mentioning official statistics in Paragraph 1?A. Fresh water insecurity is a global crisis.B. Water resources are unevenly distributed globally.C. Lack of water seriously restricts many countries’ growth.D. Developed countries are better at handling water shortages.13. How do many Chileans living in the Andes deal with the inadequate water supply?A. By harvesting water from fog.B. By bringing in seawater and purifying it.C. By moving to water-rich areas in summer.D. By cutting down on their water consumption.14. Why is a coated glass pane used in the new device?A. To hold the condensed water.B. To work as a cooling surface.C. To get rid of harmful solar radiation.D. To record the changes in temperature.15. What can be inferred about the new device?A. It produces satisfying outcomes.B. It is limited to laboratory environments.C. It has met with theoretical bottlenecks.D. It needs further confirmation from experts.第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。

When you kick, hit or throw it, energy is then kept in it by these mechanisms instead of disappearing into the environment. Then the user can put something directly into the ball, like a lamp, or a mobile phone charger so that they can get energy from it.For every fifteen minutes of the game play, the soccket can provide enough electricity(电) for an LED lamp for three hours, and the ball can store(储藏) up to 24 hours’ electricity. The International Energy Association reported last year that nearly one and a half billion people in the world had no electricity to use, and most of them live in sub-Saharan Africa and in India and other countries in Asia.Julia Silverman and Jessica Matthews both had experiences in developing countries before they began the project. They knew that power shortages are a serious problem in really areas. There’s an en ergy crisis in the world. One out of every five people in the world don’t have any electricity. With the challenges of school, just paying attention in class or studying hard isn't always enough. But what if there were other ways for students to improve their grades? For parents and students who have ever wondered if this is possible, now you can rest easy. Research suggests that a person who likes doing activities can improve their grades.Scientists think that those students who are active are not just exercising their bodies, but also exercising their brains. In turn, they can be able to improve their grades at school. In the most recent study, researchers found that when children played for half an hour each day, they were better at organizing their schoolwork as w ell as doing project work and learning traditionally ‘difficult’ subjects, such as maths. What does this mean for children who aren't active? Researchers think that if kids don't get enough activities, they are going to be at a disadvantage when it comes to school performance. In the research experiment, a group of children skipped with ropes, played basketball and did a number of other games or exercises. Another group of children didn't do any activities. They took part in testing both before the experiment and after the experiment. Testing was mainly for maths and reading skills. Results showed that the children in the activity group did better on the tests than those who had no activity. All work and no play will not only make Jack a dull (迟钝的) boy, but will also negatively (消极地) affect his grades in school, according to a new study published in the Journal of Pediatrics.Parents complain children today are actually less active and they always worry about their grades. Dr.Belton, an expert, she said: " I f you’d like to see your kids do better in school, have them close their books, set down their pencils and go outside to play."1.What does the expression "rest easy" in Paragraph I probably mean?A.Stop worrying B.Keep changingC.Avoid going D.Continue learning2.What does the writer want to tell us?A.Doing more homework can get better marks.B.All work and no play can do better on testing.C.Being active can do better on school subjects.D.Spending more time on exercise can have a better body.3.To help children get better grades, parents should ______.A.ask the researchers for help.B.encourage them to do more activities.C.help them to organize their schoolwork.D.let them solve problems by themselves.E17、Day and night across China, groups of middle-aged retirees, mostly women, gather together to dance in open space, like squares and parks. They are known as “guang chang wu da ma”. Their love for square dancing has made them a national phenomenon. However, some people don’t think highly of it. Their music is too loud, and they take up too much public space. Besides, they even dance at improper (not proper) places--- such as the square in front of the Louvre in Paris, where Chinese tourists broke into a dance last year.Even so, the dancers ar e growing in number and style. Li Dong,46, is a pioneer in this field. “In addition to keeping fit, square dancing has become so popular because older people who are free from work and from raising children want to be connected with one another. But I thin k that square dancing has a deeper meaning.”By teaching herself different dances, such as Latin, Tango and Cha-cha, Li adds variety (花样) to square dancing. “Although we are old, we are curious and want to try different dance style,” she said,” because s quare dancing has attracted(吸引)so much attention, I want to take it seriously.”As for people’s objection(反对),Li says her team has taken the suggestion of turning down the volume(音量)and dancing at proper sites.” We are not a trouble at all.”1.Why does the writer mention Chinese tourists broke into a dance in front of the Louvre in Paris?A.Because their music was too loud . B.Because they weren’t dancing at a proper place.C.Because they took up too much space. Networks have been part of our life. Probably everyone with a portable device (移动设备) has once logged on to a public WiFi network without paying for it, while they are having a coffee, on a train, in a shopping mall or at a hotel. However, is this kind of public WiFi network safe? Some networks are better protected than others because encryption (加密) methods are used. Therefore, they are safer than others. But a survey in 2015 showed that more than 950 million records were not protected, including addresses, emails, birth dales, phone numbers, passwords and so on. These open WiFi networks are really not safe, because it is very easy for hackers to break into the operating system and get people's private information. Most smartphones and laptops, by themselves, search and connect to WiFi networks. They usually prefer a network with a connection that has been used before. Hackers' devices are able to record these searches and look like the trusted WiFi networks. When these smartphones and laptops log on to the networks which are not real, hackers can easily steal their private information. So next time, when we want to use our laptops or our smartphones in public places which offer free WiFi networks, please think it twice or take safe measures before using them.1.We can learn from the passage that______.A.not all the public WiFi networks are safe B.none of the public WiFi networks is safeC.in 2015 more than 950 million records were protected D.there is no way to protect our private information 2.Hackers would probably get the following EXCEPT_______when we connect our laptops or smartphones to a public WiFi network.A.our birth dates B.our passwordsC.our phone numbers D.our smartphones3.Which of the following can be the best title of this passage?A.Don't Use Public WiFi Networks B.Why the Public WiFi Networks a Possible DangerC.We Needn't Protect Our Private Information D.Why Hackers Break into the Operating SystemⅤ.书面表达19、书面表达以“My Weekend Housework”为题,写一篇短文,谈一谈上星期天你做过的家务活,并介绍你喜欢做的家务活和不喜欢做的家务活,并谈谈你做家务的感受。

I had never been to such an amazing national park before, yet I wasn’t the most athletic person so I knew that Icouldn’t stick through all the hiking up and down. It actually ended up being a fun and adventurous experience. The ride there was definitely long but worth it. As I woke up from my nap, I saw the beautiful scenery of the tall mountains and beautiful streams. The trails were made nicely for visitors. The waterfalls were breathtaking. Climbing up rocks was one of my favorite parts. Even though I fell a couple of times, I still have a lot of fun. The fact that my family and I spent so much time together all trying to find out which route to take and what views to watch really brought us closer together. The great thing about nature is that, it’s just you, the views, and the people around you. There’s nothing there to bother you andit’s the best way to relax and enjoy yourself. Yosemite has 5 of the world’s highest waterfalls, and about 300 la kes. The structure of each mountain is incredible; it’s formed in ways that almost take your breath away. Some of them are of a deep dark color with waterfalls forming; some are formed with spots of green peeking (窥探) out. It’s definitely something you wou ldn’t want to miss.Yosemite isn’t the only great National Park but based on my experience I highly recommend going out and enjoying nature with family and friends. It’s a great time to bond, laugh, and take in what Mother Nature offers.24. Though Goo Goo Clusters may not be as familiar as Kit Kat or Hershey bars, people of all ages have enjoyed it for an entire century. In 1901, a 19-year-old named Howell Campbell opened a candy store in Nashville, Tennessee. He made all kinds of sweets and hard candies with just two copper kettles and about a dozen employees. Then, in 1912, he made the first candy to combine chocolate with other ingredients such as caramel, marshmallow, nougat, and peanuts. Originally, these clusters were hand-wrapped and sold under the counterat a few local stores with a sign reading,“A nourishing (滋养的) lunch for a nickel.” Now, they are known as Goo Goo Clusters. What else makes a Goo Goo so special?“In addition to it being the very first-ever combination confection created, its shape also makes it quite unique,’’ says Beth Sachan, Goo Goo Clusters’ senior marketing manager.“The Goo Goo Cluster is a big, imperfectly round mound (垛) of deliciousness!”The 100th anniversary of the Goo Goo Cluster is being celebrated throughout the month of October, the biggest candy-selling month of the year. About 40 restaurants in the Nashville area have created unique desserts inspired by Goo Goo Clusters to serve to their customers.Additionally, a Goo Goo-sponsored race calle d the “Jog’n Hog” was held in Nashville on October 13. Adults and children ran three miles to the finish line after eating at least one of six Goo Goo Clusters from a bag they were given at the halfway point. A golden Goo Goo was hidden in one of the bags. The winner received a $100 gift certificate to the candy’s website, googoo. com.28. The 100th anniversary of the Goo Goo Cluster is being celebrated by _____.A. offering specially designed dessertsB. giving away many gift certificatesC. opening a lot of restaurantsD. holding a competition of eating candiesDLove to sink into your chairs and relax when you get to school? Then you will not be happy to hear that schools all over the world are seriously considering exchanging traditional desks for ones with noseats at all — Yes, that means you will be encouraged to stand through those already too long math and science lessons! Why would anyone even think of putting kids to such cruelty? Experts say it improves their health and helps fight obesity. While that may seem a little far-fetched (牵强的) the officials at the few schools around the world seem to agree.Among them are educators from the College Station Independent School District in Texas, who recently completed a week-long experiment involving 480 students across three elementary schools. The 374 kidsthat agreed to participate in the study were provided a device that helped record step count and calorie consumption over the entire period. All 25 teachers involved in the study reported that students appeared to be more alert and concentrate better, when allowed to stand. The one thing that did surprise the researchers was that younger kids were more willing to stay standing than kids in higher grades. They believe this may have something to do with the fact that after years of being asked to “sit still”, older kids have a harder time adjusting to this unexpected freedom.American schools are not the only ones reporting success with stand-up desks. Four Catholic schools in Perth, Australia, which have been testing them since October 2013, have seen similar results. In May 2014, Grove House Primary School in Bradford, West Yorkshire, became Europe’s first test one, with a seven-week trial that involved the use of desks made by Ergotron in their fifth-grade classrooms. Whileofficial results are not out yet, early reactions from both teachers and students, have been extremely encouraging. The findings of these studies and others done previously, all seem to mean that allowing kids to move around in classrooms is a win-win for students and teachers — it helps kids get healthier andprovides educators with a more engaged audience.32. According to the first paragraph, what may make the students at school unhappy is that _____.A. they have to exchange desks with each otherB. they have to exchange traditional desks for ones with noseatsC. there are no seats for them to sit in classD. the officials show no sympathy to them at all33. According to the teachers, older students may not likestand-up desks because _____.A. they are cleverer than younger studentsB. they are easily tired of standing longC. they have formed the habit of sittingD. they do badly in class while standing34. What is most likely to be the result of the seven-week trial?A. The standing desks can’t be used at all.B. It is good for students to use stand-up desks.C. More tests should be done in other schools.D. The students are different in personality.35. Why do the teachers like the standing desks?A. Because the educators can draw the students’ attention.B. Because the teachers can keep the students healthy.C. Because the students can have a walk in the classroom.D. Because the standing desks can keep the students concentrated.第二节(共5小题; 每小题3分,满分15分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。
