Volunteering is So Much Fun!
Hi everyone! My name is Emma and I'm in 5th grade. Today I
want to tell you all about my super cool older brother Jake and
how he does volunteer work to help people. Jake is in 8th grade
at the middle school, and every week he volunteers at a few
different places in our town. I think it's so awesome what he does,
and I can't wait until I'm old enough to be a volunteer too!
One of the places Jake volunteers is at the animal shelter. He
goes there on Saturdays to help take care of the dogs and cats
that don't have homes yet. He gets to play with them, feed them,
clean up after them, and make sure they have fresh water and
bedding. Jake loves animals so much, and he says the shelter
workers really appreciate having extra help from volunteers,
especially on busy weekends. Sometimes families come in to
look at adopting a new pet, and Jake gets to tell them all about
the personalities of the different animals to help them pick out
the perfect new furry friend. The best part is when one of the dogs or cats gets adopted into their forever home! Jake says it
makes him so happy to know he played a role in helping that
animal find a loving family.
On Sundays, Jake volunteers at the community garden
downtown. There are lots of different garden plots where people
in the neighborhood can grow fruits, veggies, herbs and flowers.
But some of the gardeners are older adults who need a hand
with the more physical work of gardening. That's where Jake and
the other volunteers come in! They help out by digging, planting
seeds, pulling weeds, watering the plants, and harvesting the
fresh produce when it's ready to pick. I got to go with Jake a few
times this summer and it was so fun getting dirty while helping
to grow healthy food. At the end of each garden workday,
everyone shares a snack made from foods grown right there in
the garden. The zucchini bread is my favorite!
A few afternoons every week after school, Jake also
volunteers at the local library. He's a shelf reader, which means
he goes through all the bookshelves to make sure the books are
in the right order and facing outward so people can see the
covers. He also gets to read the first few pages of new books that
just arrived at the library and then write a short summary about
what they're about so people can decide if they want to check them out. How cool is that?! Jake says the best part of his library
volunteer work is seeing all the little kids who come in for story
time and getting to talk to them about what books they enjoy
reading. He tries to give them recommendations for other books
they might like based on their interests.
This past winter, Jake spent a lot of time volunteering with a
group that provides warm clothing, hot meals, and other
supplies to people in our city who are homeless and living on the
streets. It was freezing cold outside, but Jake said he didn't even
mind because he knew he was helping keep people safe from
things like frostbite and hypothermia. He would go downtown
with the group a few times a week and hand out coats, hats,
hand warmers, blankets, hot chocolate, and care packages with
things like granola bars, socks, and hygiene items. Jake said
some of the people they helped hadn't had a hot meal in days, so
they were so grateful and happy to get a warm dinner. A lot of
the homeless people have pets too, usually dogs or cats, and the
volunteer group would give out pet food, leashes, bowls, and
even doggy jackets to keep the animals warm too. Jake felt really
good being able to not only help the people without homes, but
their animal companions as well. Hearing all about the different places Jake volunteers and
the people he gets to help makes me so excited to become a
volunteer as soon as I'm old enough. It sounds like such a fun
way to spend time giving back to the community, meeting new
people, and making a positive difference in the world around me.
I can't wait until I'm big enough to volunteer at places like the
animal shelter, the community garden, the library, the homeless
shelters, or anywhere else that needs helping hands! Just like
Jake has been doing, I want to find ways to put smiles on
people's faces and make their lives a little bit easier or brighter.
Volunteering seems like it's not just a way to help others, but
also to make friends, learn new skills, and have experiences I'll
never forget. If you're not volunteering yet, I think you should
definitely give it a try like Jake did. You might just find your new
favorite hobby and a way to make the world a little bit better at
the same time!
