张剑曾鸣编著《英语阅读理解150篇》Part ADirections:Read the following four texts. Answer the questions below each text by choosing A, B, C or D. Mark your answers on ANSWER SHEET 1. (40 points)Text 1No t long after the telephone was invented, I assume, a call was placed. The caller was a parent saying, “your child is bullying my child, and I want it stopped!” The bully's parent replied, “you must have the wrong number. My child is a little angel.”A trillion phone calls later, the conversation is the same. When children are teased or tyrannized, the parental impulse is to grab the phone and rant. But these days, as studies in the U.S. show bullying on the rise and parental supervision on the decline, researchers who study bullying say that calling moms and dads is more futile than ever. Such calls often lead to playground recriminations and don't really teach our kids any lessons about how to navigate the world and resolve conflicts. When you call parents, you want them to “extract the cruelty”from their bullying children, says Laura Kavesh, a child psychologist in Evanston, Illinois. “But many parents are blown away by the idea of their child being cruel. They won t believe it.”In a recent police department survey in Oak Harbor, Washington, 89% of local high school students said they had engaged in bullying behavior. Yet only 18% of parents thought their children would act as bullies. In a new U.S.PTA survey, 5% of parents support contacting other parents to deal with bullying. But many educators warn that those conversations can be misinterpreted, causing tempers to flare. Instead, they say, parents should get objective outsiders, like principals, to mediate.Meanwhile, if you get a call from a parent who is angry about your child's bullying, listen without getting defensive. That's what Laura McHugh of Castro Valley, California, did when a caller told her that her then 13-year-old son had spit in another boy's food. Her son had confessed, but the victim's mom “wanted to make sure my son hadn't given her son a nasty disease,” says McHugh, who apologized and promised to get her son tested for AIDS and other diseases. She knew the chance of contracting any disease this way was remote, but her promise calmed the mother and showed McHugh's son that his bad behaviour was being taken seriously. McHugh, founder of Parents Coach Kids, a group that teaches parenting skills, sent the mom the test results. All were negative.Remember: once you make a call, you might not like what you hear. If you have an itchy dialing finger, resist temptation. Put it in your pocket. Passage One (Violence Can Do Nothing to Diminish Race Prejudice) In some countries where racial prejudice is acute, violence has so come to be taken for granted as a means of solving differences, that it is not even questioned. There are countries where the white man imposes his rule by brute force; there are countries where the black man protests by setting fire to cities and by looting and pillaging. Important people on both sides, who would in other respects appear to be reasonable men, get up and calmly argue in favor of violence – as if it were a legitimate solution, like any other. What is really frightening, what really fills you with despair, is the realization that when it comes to the crunch(事到临头), we have made no actual progress at all. We may wear collars and ties instead of war-paint, but our instincts remain basically unchanged. The whole of the recorded history of the human race, that tedious documentation of violence, has taught us absolutely nothing. We have still not learnt that violence never solves a problem but makes it more acute. The sheer horror, the bloodshed, the suffering mean nothing. No solution ever comes to light the morning after when we dismally contemplate the smoking ruins and wonder what hit us.The truly reasonable men who know where the solutions lie are finding it harder and harder to get a hearing. They are despised, mistrusted and even persecuted by their own kind because they advocate such apparently outrageous things as law enforcement. If half the energy that goes into violent acts were put to good use, if our efforts were directed at cleaning up the slums and ghettos, at improving living standards and providing education and employment for all, we would have gone a long way to arriving at a solution. Our strength is sapped by having to mop up the mess that violence leaves in its wake. In a well-directed effort, it would not be impossible to fulfill the ideals of a stable social programme. The benefits that can be derived from constructive solutions are everywhere apparent in the world around us. Genuine and lasting solutions are always possible, providing we work within the framework of the law. Before we can even begin to contemplate peaceful co-existence between the races, we must appreciate each other‘s problems. And to do this, we must learn about them: it is a simple exercise in communication, in exchanging information. ‗Talk, talk, talk,‘ the advocates of violence say, ‗all you ever do is talk, and we are none the wiser.‘ It‘s rather like the story of the famous barrister who painstakingly explained his case to the judge. After listening to a lengthy argument the judge complained that after all this talk, he was none the wiser. ‗Possible, my lord,‘ the barrister replied, ‗none the wiser, but surely far better informed.‘Knowledge is the necessary prerequisite to wisdom: the knowledge that violence creates the evils it pretends to solve.1.What is the best title for this passage?A. Advocating Violence.B. Violence Can Do Nothing to Diminish Race Prejudice.C. Important People on Both Sides See Violence As a Legitimate Solution.D. The Instincts of Human Race Are Thirsty for Violence.2.Recorded history has taught usA. violence never solves anything.B. nothing.C. the bloodshed means nothing.D. everything.3.It can be inferred that truly reasonable menA. can‘t get a hearing.B. are looked down upon.C. are persecuted.D. have difficulty in advocating law enforcement.4.―He was none the wiser‖ meansA. He was not at all wise in listening.B. He was not at all wiser than nothing before.C. He gains nothing after listening.D. He makes no sense of the argument.5.According the author the best way to solve race prejudice isA. law enforcement.B. knowledge.C. nonviolence.D. mopping up the violent mess.V ocabulary1.acute 严重的,剧烈的,敏锐的2.loot v.抢劫,掠夺;n.赃物3.pillage v.抢劫,掠夺4.crunch v.吱嘎吱嘎咬或嚼某物;n.碎裂声when it comes to the crunch = if/when the decisive moment comes. 当关键时刻来到时。

中考英语阅读理解真题及答案(1)Edward rose early on the New-year morning. He looked in every room and wished a Happy New Year to his family. Then he ran into the street to repeat that to those he might meet. When he came back, his father gave him two bright, new silver dollars. His face lighted up as he took them. 英语阅读理解100篇(中级篇)-25_英语题库Passage Twenty-five(Exploration of the Titanic) After resting on the ocean floor, split asunder and rusting, for nearly three-quarters of a century,a great ship seemed to cone alive again. The saga of the White Star liner Titanic, which struck an iceberg and sank on its maiden voyage in1912,carrying more than1,500passengers to their death, has been celebrated in print and on film,in poetry and song. But last week what had been legendary suddenly became real.As they viewed videotapes and photographs of the sunken leviathan, millions of people around the world could sense her mass, her eerie quiet and the ruined splendor of a lost age.Watching on television, they vicariously joined the undersea craft Alvin and Jason Jr.(J.J.)as they toured the wreckage of the luxury liner, wandering across the decks past corroded bollards, peering into the officer’s quarters and through rust-curtained portholes.Views of the railings where doomed passengers and crewmembers stood evoked images of the moonless night74years ago when the great ship slipped beneath the waves. The two-minute videotape and nine photographs, all in color and shot12,500ft.under the North Atlantic, were a tiny sample of60hours of video and60,000 stills garnered during the twelve-day exploration. They are released at a Washington press conference conducted by Marine Geologist Robert Ballard,44,who led the teams from the Wood Hole Oceanographic Institution that found the Titanic last September and revisited it this July.Recounting the highlights of what has already become the most celebrated feat of underwater exploration,Ballard revealed some startling new information. His deep-diving craft failed to find the300-ft.gash that, according to legend, was torn in the Titanic’s hull when the ship plowed into the iceberg.Instead,he suggested, the collision had buckled the ship’s plates, allowing water to pour in. He also brought back evidence that the ship broke apart not when she hit bottom, as he had thought when viewing the first Titanic images last September, but as she sank:the stern, which settled on the bottom almost1,800ft.from the bow,had swiveled180on its way down.1.What is the best title for this passage?[A].New Information about the Sunken Ship.[B].Exploration of the Titanic.[C].To watch the Videotape.[D].To explore the Titanic with High Tech.2.How did the viewers feel when watching the videotape?[A].They felt rather sad,and felt they themselves took part in the exploration.[B].They felt keenly for it.[C].They felt rather bad about it.[D].They felt out of spirits.3.When did the great ship sink?[A].In1912.[B].She sank in its maiden voyage in1912.[C].She sank in its second voyage in1912.[D].She sank in its first voyage in1912.4.What did Robert reveal at a press conference?[A].He revealed some startling information.[B].He said nothing.[C].He complained the exploration was very hard.[D].He revealed the success of their work.Vocabulary1.split asunder向不同方向裂开,散开2.saga英雄传说,冒险故事3.maiden voyage处女航4.celebrate赞美,庆祝。
