I think it is possible that Kate feels uncomfortable about Janet's sudden departure, so she

wants to offer more help.

2. I think very possibly Mark believeds Janet's behaviour is a normal reaction to being

homesick. Well, probably Mark believes that Janet was considering that Kate was short of time

(because she was finishing her essay) and did not want to disturb her anymore, so she

left.

3. I strongly believe that Janet finds it difficult to talk about her own feelings when she sees

that Kate is very busy. Well, i guess she might find it difficult to deal with her homesick situation in addition to

her essay writing.

4. It is so obvious that a high grade for her essay will make her feel better.

I would argue that the thought of going home for a break may make her feel better.
