The Hoover Dam, built in 1931, is named after former President

Herbert Hoover. The Colorado River made the dam necessary, which

begins high in the Rocky Mountains. Heavy snow falls on the Rocky

Mountains. The snow is so deep in some areas, but the snow does melt.

Cold ice water travels down the mountains and forms several rivers.

These rivers link( 连结 ) together and form the beginning of the

Colorado River which flows through, or provides water for the states

of Wyoming, Colorado, Utah, New Mexico, Arizona, Nevada and

California. Then it crosses the border(界限 ) into Mexico.

The Colorado River has always been powerful. It created the huge

Grand Canyon(大峡谷 ). The water cut hundreds of metres deep into

the desert floor of Arizona. The Grand Canyon was cut into the desert

floor beginning thousands of years ago. But the power of this river

has been demonstrated in more modern times. Between 1905 and 1907,

the Colorado River caused great amounts of flooding in parts of

Arizona and California. In two years of flooding, the Colorado River

filled the ancient lake called the Salton Sea. The flooding also flooded

homes, towns and farming areas. Many people were forced to flee

their homes.

In 1918, Arthur Davis advised the government to build a dam to

control the Colorado River. He said the dam should be built in an area

called Boulder Canyon on the border between the states of Arizona

and Nevada. On November 24, 1922, officials signed a document in

New Mexico.

When the Hoover Dam was finished in 1936 ,it was the largest 高中英语外研版必修3语篇提能6-1

dam in the world. And it was the largest power producer that used

water power to make electricity. Today this title needs discussing.

But Hoover Dam is still a huge and interesting place.

Like many families in Sanyati, a small countryside

town in western Zimbabwe, Tatenda's family does not have a television.

One day after school, Tatenda arrived home tired and noticed

something unusual in the house“.At first, I thought Dad had bought a

television set, but when my mother said it was a puter, I was

disappointed,” 11-year-old Tatenda said. “Nobody in our

neighborhood knew how to operate a puter. ”

For almost two weeks, the gift lay untouched in the house. But

things changed when Amina, a young family friend from Harare,

Zimbabwe's capital, came to visit. Amina knew all about puters and

was a good teacher, too.

At first, Tatenda always pressed the wrong button(按钮 ). But he 高中英语外研版必修3语篇提能6-1

kept on going because he was eager to learn. After three weeks,

Tatenda mastered some puter basics.

Meanwhile, Tatenda's friends wondered what had happened to

him, because Tatenda always had an excuse for going back home.

One day, Tatenda's three friends surprised him at home. When

they arrived, they couldn't believe what they saw — a puter and

Tatenda operating it.

After that surprise visit, Tatenda taught them how to use the puter.

It wasn't long before the neighborhood kids wanted to learn, too!

Tatenda worried. The puter began to experience problems because the

kids were pressing too many buttons. So he began charging(收费 ) for

lessons. But those whose parents did not have money paid with

chickens or goats.

With the money earned from teaching, Tatenda has bought a

television and radio for his family. And he plans to buy a new puter. He

also plans to keep on teaching. The people of Sanyati couldn' t be more
