Unit2 Using language能力提升练I. 阅读理解(2019北京师范大学附中高二下期中)The word proactivity is fairly common in management literature, but you won’t find it in the dictionary. It means that as a human being you take responsibility for your own life.Look at the word responsibility the ability to choose your response, response-ability. Effective people are proactive because they take responsibility Their behavior is a product of their own decisions based on values, rather than being a product of their own conditions, based on feelings. For instance, you are planning a picnic with your family You re excited You have all the preparations. You’ve decided where to go, and then it becomes stormy, killing your plan Proactive people carry weather within them. They realize what their purpose really was, and they creatively have a picnic elsewhere even if it’s in their own basement with some special games, and make the best of that situation. The opposite of being proactive is to be reactive. Reactive people would say, “What’ s the us e?” “We can’t do anything.” “Oh, this is so upsetting after all of our preparations and arrangements.” They try to persuade the people around them and usually the picnic will be cancelled. The language of reactive people is like: “I can’t.” “Don’t have time.” “I have to.” “I must.” The whole spirit of that language is the transfer of responsibility. They think things are determined by their environment, or by their conditions or by their conditioning or their genetic makeup. Psychologically people who believe they are determined will produce the evidence to support the belief, and they increasingly feel victimized and out of control. They’re not in charge of their life at all.On the contrary, a proactive person exercises free will and is free to choose the response that best applies to his values in that way he gains control over the circumstances, rather than being controlled by them.1. According to the passage,a proactive person’s behavior can result from.A. the environment.B. an inner belief.C. the genetic makeup.D. a temporary feeling.2. What does “carry weather within them” in the second paragraph probably mean?A. Manage to improve the weather.B. Give in to the weather passively.C. Stress the influence of the weather.D. It can be concluded from the passage that determinists(宿命论者)______.A. things passively.B. are in charge of themselves.C. are similar to proactive people.D. respond to outside conditions actively.Ⅱ. 完形填空(2020江苏启东中学高二下期中)In our backyard there was a big pond with lots of trees and bushes. 巴赫金.陀思妥耶夫斯基诗学问题英文文献Mikhail Bakhtin's Poetics and the Works of Fyodor DostoevskyMikhail Bakhtin, the renowned Russian literary critic and philosopher, is widely recognized for his groundbreaking contributions to the understanding of literary works, particularly the writings of Fyodor Dostoevsky. Bakhtin's analysis of Dostoevsky's poetics has had a profound impact on the way we interpret and appreciate the complexities of the renowned Russian author's literary oeuvre. At the heart of Bakhtin's exploration of Dostoevsky's poetics lies the concept of the polyphonic novel. Bakhtin argued that Dostoevsky's works depart from the traditional monologic structure of the novel, where a single authorial voice dominates the narrative. Instead, Dostoevsky's novels are characterized by a plurality of independent and fully developed voices, each with its own distinct perspective and worldview. This polyphonic approach, Bakhtin contends, allows for a genuine dialogue between the characters, where no single voice or ideology is privileged over the others. One of the key aspects of Bakhtin's analysis is his understanding of the role of the hero in Dostoevsky's novels. Bakhtin asserts thatDostoevsky's heroes are not passive objects of the author's design but rather autonomous individuals with the capacity to challenge and even contradict the author's own views. This notion of the hero as a fully autonomous and self-conscious being is central to Bakhtin's conception of the polyphonic novel.Furthermore, Bakhtin explores the concept of the "unfinalized" hero in Dostoevsky's works. He argues that Dostoevsky's characters are not static, predetermined entities but rather dynamic, ever-evolving individuals who resist being reduced to a single, fixed identity. This idea of the "unfinalized" hero is closely tied to Bakhtin's understanding of the polyphonic novel, where the characters are not merely vehicles for the author's ideas but active participants in the ongoing dialogue that constitutes the literary work.Bakhtin's analysis also delves into the role of language and discourse in Dostoevsky's novels. He suggests that Dostoevsky's works are characterized by a multiplicity of social and ideological languages, each with its own distinct perspective and mode of expression. This heteroglossia, as Bakhtin terms it, serves to undermine the notion of a single, authoritative voice and instead presents a cacophony of competing voices and worldviews. Moreover, Bakhtin's exploration of Dostoevsky's poetics extends to the notion of the carnivalesque, a concept that he sees as central tothe author's literary approach. The carnivalesque, in Bakhtin's view, represents a subversive and liberating force that challenges traditional hierarchies and social norms. He argues that Dostoevsky's novels often incorporate elements of the carnival, such as the inversion of power structures, the blurring of boundaries between the sacred and the profane, and the celebration of the body and its functions.Bakhtin's insights into Dostoevsky's poetics have had a lasting impact on the field of literary criticism and have influenced generations of scholars and readers. By illuminating the complex and multifaceted nature of Dostoevsky's literary works, Bakhtin has helped us to better understand the profound philosophical and existential questions that lie at the heart of the Russian author's oeuvre. In conclusion, Mikhail Bakhtin's exploration of Dostoevsky's poetics has been instrumental in shaping our understanding of the Russian author's literary genius. Through concepts such as the polyphonic novel, the "unfinalized" hero, and the carnivalesque, Bakhtin has provided a nuanced and insightful perspective on the rich tapestry of Dostoevsky's literary universe. His work continues to inspire and challenge scholars and readers alike, inviting us to engage with the complexities and contradictions that lie at the core of Dostoevsky's enduring literary legacy.。

But it is not a path she’d originally planned to follow. After completing her psychology degree. White took a Master’s in neuro-science (神经科学), fully expecting an academic career. But after her interest was raised by the part of the course that involved coding (编码), she decided to take a Master’s course in computer science. She graduated with flying color. Now 27, White hasn’t looked back. She joined Oakbrook Finance in Nottingham as a software developer, and stayed for two years, rounding off her time there by winning Rising Star of the Year at the 2018 Women in IT awards. At Unidays, a business offering discounts to students, she works as a back end developer in the maintenance team, “working on the systems and making them better”. It’s a job she loves. “It’s a challenge every day and you never get bored. There is always something to learn.” she says.White believes that some graduates are put off technology careers because they don’t realize the range of jobs available, “A lot of people think tech is programing. But there’s also design product management—and everything in life is to do with tech these days. Whether it’s buying something with your cards or posting something on social media, you can’t really avoid it.”A common misunderstanding, she says, is that IT is all about maths. “I’m terrible at maths and it scared the living daylights out of me when I started this because I thought I wouldn’t be able to do it,”In practice, it hasn’t been a problem, and she has found that there are a lot of creative elements in programing. Her psychology background has proved to be a bonus, enabling her to bring a different perspective to her work, particularly when she has to cooperate with user experience designers. As for the future, White wants to learn as much as she can and become very strong in the area.7.How many subjects has White learned?A.Two.B.Three.C.Four.D.Five.8.What can we infer from Paragraph three?A.Nothing is impossible because of technology.B.More graduates are being attracted by technology.C.Technology contributes to the development of economy.D.We can’t live a life free from technology nowadaya.9.What does the underlined word “bonus” in the fourth paragraph mean?A.Extra benefit.B.Strong influence.C.Unexpected challenge.D.Satisfying income.10.Which of the following is the best title for this passage?A.Jess White, a Dependable and Helpful 1ady.B.Jess White, a Talented and Confident Programmer.C.Jess White, a Curious and Knowledgeable Learner,D.Jess White, a Hard-working and Proud Expert. When a chunk of ice fell from a collapsing glacier(冰川)on the Swiss Alps’ Mount Eiger in 2017, part of the long deep sound it produced was too low for human ears to detect. But these vibrations held a key to calculating the ice avalanche’s(崩塌)critical characteristics.Low-frequency sound waves called infrasound that travel great distances through the atmosphere are already used to monitor active volcanoes from afar. Now some researchers in this field have switched focus from fire to ice: dangerous blocks snapping off glaciers. Previous workhas analyzed infrasound from snow avalanches but never ice, says Boise State University geophysicist Jeffrey Johnson. “This was different,” Johnson says. “A signature of a new material has been detected with infrasound.”Usually glaciers move far too slowly to generate an infrasound signal, which researchers pick up using detectors that track slight changes in air pressure. But a collapse—a sudden, rapid breaking of ice from the glacier’s main body—is a prolific infrasound producer. Glacial collapses drive ice avalanches, which pose an increasing threat to people in mountainous regions as rising temperatures weaken large fields of ice. A glacier “can become detached from the ground due to melting, causing bigger break— offs,” says University of Florence geologist Emanuele Marchetti, lead author of the new study. As the threat grows, scientists seek new ways to monitor and detect such collapses.Researchers often use radar to track ice avalanches, which is precise but expensive and can monitor only one specific location and neighboring avalanche paths. Infrasound, Marchetti says, is cheaper and can detect break—off events around a much broader area as well as multiple avalanches across a mountain. It is challenging, however, to separate a signal into its components (such as traffic noises, individual avalanches and nearby earthquakes) without additional measurements, says ETH Zurich glaciologist Malgorzata Chmiel. “The model used by Marchetti is a first approximation for this,” she says. Isolating the relevant signal helps the researchers monitor an ice avalanche’s speed, path and volume from afar using infrasound.Marchetti and his colleagues are now working to improve their detectors to pick up more signals across at-risk regions in Europe, and they have set up collaborations around the continent to better understand signals that collapsing glaciers produce. They are also refining their mathematical analysis to figure out each ice cascade’s physical details.11.What can we learn from Paragraph 2 and Paragraph 3?A.Infrasound has a major role to play in discovering new materials.B.Ice avalanches are a bigger threat to people than volcanic eruptions.C.Researchers are trying to use infrasound in detecting ice avalanches.D.Scientists employ infrasound more in mountain areas than in other places.12.Which is an advantage of infrasound over radar?A.The combination with other relevant signals.B.The accuracy in locating a certain avalanche.C.The ability in picking up signals in wider areas.D.The sensitivity in tracking air pressure changes.13.The underlined word “this” in Paragraph 4 refers to________.A.distinguishing different components of a signalB.detecting multiple avalanches at the same timeC.calculating the speed and path of ice avalanchesD.monitoring the specific location of ice break—offs14.Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?A.From Fire to Ice B.Glacier WhispersC.Nature is Warning D.Secret of Ice AvalanchesWhen you think of how much you do with your hands all day, from making yourself fried eggs in the morning to folding laundry in the evening, it becomes clear how vital skillfulness is to daily life. 15 You need it to play sports, for example, or use a remote or a video game controller. For some specific tips on improving skillfulness, we turned to a personal trainer Abdias Rojas. He said, “there are so many movements you can do to actually improve not just the strength of your hands but also flexibility in your hands.” 16Put rubber bands on your fingers, then expand and contract them. This will contribute to myofascial (肌筋膜的) release and getting your hands to feel more comfortable. To get a better sense of how much pressure you should apply when touching things, do hand exercise in sand. 17 But when you do hand exercise inside of a sandbox, put your hands in a box of sand, you can literally learn to squeeze the sand and understand which joint or which finger is giving more giving more pressure or less pressure.18 Practice leaning into them with your palm down on the floor. Then, practice leaning into them with the backs of your hands on the floor, rolling on them, like putting weight on and taking weight off the wrist. Finally, try seated eccentric (偏心的) wrist extension. Sit upright with an arm on a table, holding a dumbbell with your hand hanging off the edge and your palm facing down. Use yourother hand to curl your wrist up, lower it, and repeat. 19Don’t overlook the value of overall body health when it comes to improving skillfulness, either. Rojas pointed out that without the optimal gross (最佳的粗肌) and fine motor skills, which make up the skillfulness of our hands, we would be unable to perform daily tasks.A.It sounds strange.B.Moreover, it helps you have fun, too.C.Here are the ones that he recommended.D.To strengthen your wrists, do wrist mobility drills.E.Do this in sets of two with 20 repetitions each, every day.F.To strengthen your sensation of touch, avoid working out with gloves.G.To start with the basics, flexibility is the skill of performing tasks, particularly with your hands.二、完形填空Alfred Nobel became a millionaire and changed the ways of mining, construction, and warfare as the inventor of dynamite (炸药). It all began with a simple game she programmed in her Los Angeles public school’s Grade 2class. Today , at18, the Grade 12 student’s initial curiosity has evolved into a deep-seated desire to use technology to decode (解码) real-world problems. In 2021, she co-developed Megaphone, one of her first apps, to tackle unanswered post-class questions and poor communication about events and announcements. Her problem-solving ability kept building from there. When she took online CPR classes at the start of the pandemic, she figured it couldn’t be just her who was struggling with the steps. So she created an app called CPR Buddy ― a winner in the 2022 Apple Swift Challenge ― which guides users through CPR using vibrations (震动) to regulate breath. After winning the award, Angelina presented her work to Apple CEO Tim Cook, a highlight in her young career, but one she didn’t lose her cool over. “There’s no point putting people on a pedestal (神坛),” she says. The next year, Angelina built an app called Lilac, designed to assist nonEnglish-speaking single parents with resources for housing, job opportunities and translation support. She was inspired by her own experiences as a child of a single mother who immigrated to the US.When Angelina decided to pursue pilot training at the age of 16, she was struck by how difficult it was to find financial support, which encouraged her to create yet another app, Pilot Fast Track, which helps those longing to be pilots find scholarships for flight training.Looking to the future, besides applying to colleges with great labs, Angelina is exploring the field of aerospace cybersecurity and mechatronics ― combining computer science, electricalengineering and mechanical engineering.“There’s not enough optimism in the world,“ she says. “I have also been in situations in my life where I’ve lost a lot of hope. But in the end, it is a mindset, and there are ways in any situation you’re in to make it somewhat better.”5.What is Angelina’s pursuit?A.To design games for kids.B.To stimulate teen’s curiosity.C.To address problems through technology.D.To find innovative approaches to digital challenges.6.What can we learn about Angelina from Paragraph 3?A.She couldn’t breathe regularly.B.She was inspired by celebrities.C.She replaced CPR with an app.D.She was humble about her success. 7.What was the primary goal of developing Pilot Fast Track?A.To direct pilots’ career paths.B.To help to-be pilots find funds.C.To pair future pilots with airlines.D.To evaluate pilot training schools.8.What might be the best title?A.Breaking the code B.Bearing growing painsC.Facing life as it is D.Following role modelsNowadays most kids live on their digital devices. Some data show that the social media could play a role in their mental health — something that has been on the decrease among teens and tweens. But how big a role it plays also appears to depend on how kids choose to use it.In recent years, the internet has done some great things. It’s brought people closer together. It’s helped people form big communities in the world. And it can be an important place for people to find support and connection. But some adolescents (青少年) can be exposed to something harmful. For example, one 2022 survey found that nearly half of all teens have been cyberbullied (网络欺凌) online. The same survey found that nearly two in every three adolescents experienced hate-based content onsocial media.Social media is also a space where people are repeatedly comparing themselves to others. Am I pretty enough? Strong enough? One study of kids 13 to 17 years old found that almost half reported that time spent on social media made them feel worse about their bodies. Only about one in every seven said viewing social media made them feel better.“It’s hard to study the influence of social media on mental health,” Whitlock, a research psychologist studying internet use by adolescents, explains, “because everyone uses it.” There’s no large group of others to which researchers can compare them. Still, one study of nearly 6,600 U.S. teens linked use of social media to depression, anxiety and a poor body image. There’s still not enough evidence to say social media is safe for kids, but there was plenty of evidence to warn kids that they should take care when using it. The takeaway, Whitlock says, is that social media use needs to be intentional (有意的). By that, she means “used for some purposeful goal”, not just to pass the time.9.What use of the internet does paragraph 2 mainly focus on?A.Job hunting.B.Online shopping.C.Home schooling.D.Social networking.10.Why can teens be negatively affected in their mental health by using social media?A.They are so busy with online surveys as not to get relaxed.B.They are very likely to suffer from cyberbullying online.C.They are always compared in looks and strength.D.They are too young to deal with stress properly.11.According to Whitlock, what is the challenge for researchers?A.Not enough comparisons.B.Improper research designs.C.Too many internet users.D.Limited study periods.12.What advice is given to kids on the use of social media?A.Use it carefully, since it is linked to both good and harm.B.Try not to use it, considering the risk it may cause.C.Use it however you want, as long as there is a purpose.D.Don’t use it to kill time but for some real purpose.Bing, also known as a Chinese pancake, is a traditional Chinese recipe, similar to pancakes.
