选修六Unit 4 Global warming练习I. AA few weeks ago a group of scientists produced a report about global warming and the natural world. They wanted to find out if global warming was dangerous for plants and animals. The scientists were surprised by what they found. They saw that during the next 50 years about 25% of land animals and plants will disappear from the earth. More than 1 million plant and animal species will die out by 2050.The head of the research team, Christ Thomas, who is a professor of conservation biology at Leeds University, said the results of their research were frightening. More than 10% of all plants and animals will disappear from the earth. It is too late to save many plants and animals because of the greenhouse gases that are already in the atmosphere. But the scientists say if we control greenhouse gases now, we can save many more plants and animals from disappearing. The scientists studied some areas of the world with very rich biology. These areas were Europe, Australia, Central and South America, and South Africa. Their studies showed that species living in mountainous areas had a better chance of survival because they could move uphill to get cooler. In flat areas, such as deserts, plants and animals would have to move very long distances to get cooler, so they are in great danger of dying out. The scientists found many surprising things. For example, they found that half of the 24 species of butterfly they studied in Australia would soon disappear.

Unit 4 Global warmingⅠ.阅读理解A(2020·“四省八校”高三第二次质量检测) Fires sweeping across the Amazon rainforest this year have been a hot topic as scientists and environmental groups are worried that they will worsen the climate change crisis and threaten biodiversity(生物多样性).As the largest rainforest in the world, the Amazon rainforest is often called “the lungs of the world”.It is also home to about 3 million species of plants and animals, and 1 million native people. The vast areas of the rainforest play an important role in the world's ecosystem because they absorb heat instead of it being reflected back into the atmosphere. They also store carbon dioxide and produce oxygen, ensuring that less carbon dioxide is released, mitigating the effects of climate change.“Any forest destroyed is a threat to biodiversity and people,” Thomas Lovejoy,an ecologist at George Mason University told National Geographic.“The overwhelming threat is that a lot of carbon dioxide goes into the atmosphere,”he stressed.“In the midst of the global climate crisis,we cannot afford more damage to a major source of oxygen and biodiversity. The Amazon rainforest must be protected,”U.N.Secretary General António Guterres said.Data from the National Institute for Space Research(INPE) show that the number of forest fires in Brazil quickly increased by 82 percent from January to August this year pared to the same period last year.A total of 71,497 forest fires were registered in the country in the first eight months of 2019,up from 39,194 in the same period in 2018,INPE said.“We estimate that the forest areas in the Brazilian Amazon rainforest have decreased by between 20 and 30 percent pared to the last 12 months,”Carlos Nobre,a researcher at the University of Sa~o Paulo, told German broadcaster Deutsche Welle.Brazil owns about 60 percent of the Amazon rainforest, whose degradation(恶化) could have severe consequences for global climate and rainfall. The extent of the area ruined by fires has yet to be determined, but the emergency has transcended(超出)Brazil's borders, reaching Peruvian,Paraguayan and Bolivian regions.

1. ________(work) for two days,Steve managed to finish his report on schedule.

3.(2015·陕西,18改编)Back from his twoyear medical service in Africa,Dr.Lee was very happy to see his mother ________(take) good care of at home.

AIn many parts of Africa, munities have electricity service that sometimes does not operate. And many rural (农村的) settlements are cut off from electricity producing centers. Therefore, offgrid (离网) solar power is being available to many munities.Offgrid solar energy is energy that is captured from the sun without being connected to a main electricity center. The International Energy Agency says more than 600 million people in Africa have no way to get electricity.New technology, however, could help solve this problem.Lumos Global is among the panies offering solar energy services in Nigeria. The pany's Chief Operating Officer, Nir Marom, says, “You need to put the system on the roof, and put the indoor unit in the home. There is a cable (电缆) to connect them. You don't need to be an electrician or anything like this. The sun charges the electricity, but you need to provide the credit to power the system up, and you do this using your mobile phone.” The price of offgrid solar energy systems has decreased sharply.Today, people can rent solar equipment for less than 50 cents a day.And they can pay for the electricity as they need it.Senegal opened one of Africa's largest solar factories last year. The pany paid for the construction of the solar factory in Senegal.A manager says a solar farm in Senegal can produce twice the amount of electricity that a farm of the same size in Britain or in northern France could produce. The International Energy Agency predicts tha t almost a billion people in subSaharan Africa will have ongrid electricity by 2040.But the agency says 50 million people will still be offgrid.Investors believe solar power could serve those people while also helping to reduce gases linked to climate change.A.Many people have difficulty in getting electricity.B.There is no electricity producing centers.C.It's a fashion among the munities.D.It's convenient to put the energy into use.
Unit 4 Global warming(建议用时:30分钟)Ⅰ阅读理解A(2019·济南5月针对性练习)In 1869, the Smiley familypurchased an area of land about 100 miles north of New YorkCity. Over time, some of their property and many of thesurrounding landscapes became the Mohonk Preserve, which hassince grown to 8,000 acres and attracts visitors and rock climbers. But the Mohonk Preserve also has a long scientific legacy. In the 1930s, Dan Smiley, a descendent of the original owners, began keeping track of the plants and animals that lived in the area.Megan Napoli is a research ecologist with the Mohonk Preserve in New York. She thinks Smiley’s efforts produced a rare longterm data set of observations, which is useful for studying the impacts of climate change. For instance, other research has shown that songbirds are migrating north earlier and earlier in the spring. It’s important for the birds to arrive at the proper time in the spring, because they need to time their arrival with the insects’emergence. So they need to be here to establish their nesting sites and lay their eggs. Once the eggs hatch, they have their baby birds, so they need to time it when the insects are most abundant.Napoli has begun analyzing about 76,000 observations of songbird migration dates collected by Smiley and his team to see if they, too, show that climate change has altered the timing of migrations. Her results suggest that they do.Napoli found that shortdistance migrants that spend their winters in the southern U.S. now arrive an average of eleven days earlier than they did in the 1930s. Long distance migrants that overwinter in the tropics arrive roughly a week earlier. Napoli presented her results at a recent meeting of the Ecological Society of America in Portland, Oregon.Meanwhile, who knows how many other longterm, personal data collections like Smiley’s are out there, waiting to be discovered and to help improve official attempts to track the planet’s changes.【解题导语】本文是一篇说明文。
阅读理解A[2020·兰州实战模拟]The effect of climate change extends beyond ruining Earth's environment and our physical safety. A report published this week suggests that climate change has a negative effect on our mental health, too.The study, published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America (PNAS), links an increase in monthly temperatures to a rise in mental health issues. The experimental evidence stems from meteorological (气象学的) data paired with information collected from nearly 2 million randomly sampled residents in the United States. The data was collected over the span (跨度) of a decade.“We find that experiences with hotter temperatures and added rainfall each worsen mental health, that longlasting warming associates with an increased popularity of mental health issues, and that exposure to tropical cyclones (热带气旋), likely to increase in frequency in the future, is linked to worsened mental health,” authors of the stu dy stated. “These results provide added largescale evidence to the growing link between climate change and mental health.”The report specifically focused on mental health outcomes due to the effects of environmental stress — such as temperature, rainfall, and tropical cyclones —but other climate changerelated issues are likely to affect mental health as well — specifically, the stress and anxiety of knowing natural disasters could be more frequent as temperatures rise.1.From the newlypublished report,we learn that the climate change may ________.A.save a lot of people's livesB.cause unbelievable disastersC.influence people's mental healthD.greatly change people's life styles2.Why did the author mention “the span of a decade” in Paragraph 2?A.To stress the importance of the study.B.To show that the study cost too much money.C.To explain the difficulties and hardships of the study.D.To indicate that the study is objective and believable.3.Where can we find some specific results of the study?A.In Paragraph 1.
