In today’s lecture, we will talk about online education. You know in some parts of the world, it is not that easy for people to receive education. And even in the United Sates where education is available, it might not be within reach. Thus, online courses provided by those world famous universities can bring the best quality education to as many people as we could around the world, and for free.First, let’s talk a little bit about some of the components that go into online ed ucation. (1) The first component is that when you move away from the constraints of a physical classroom and design content for an online format, you can break away from, for example, the one-hour lecture format. You can break up the material, for example, into short, modular units of 8 to 12 minutes, (2)and each of the short unit introduces a coherent concept. Students can deal with this material in different ways, depending on their background, their skills ortheir interests. So, for example, some students might benefit from a little bit of preparatory material that other students might already have. Other students might be interested in a particular topic that they want to pursue individually. So this format allows students to break away from the one-size-fits-all model of education, (3)and allows students to follow a much more personalized curriculum. Second, and perhaps one of the biggest components of our online education is that we need to have students who practice with the material in order to re ally understand it. There’s been a range of studies that demonstrate the importance of this. A study in Science last year, for example, demonstrates that even simple retrieval practice, where students are just supposed to repeat what they already learned gives considerably improved results on various achievement tests.(4)So we need to build in much more meaningful practice questions. (5)Now, fortunately, technology has helped us to provide the students with feedback on those questions. We can now grade a range of interesting types of homework online.(6)The third component is what is called collaborative learning. Students could collaborate in different online courses in a variety of ways. (7) First of all, there was aquestion and answer forum, where students could pose questions, and other students could answer these questions. And what is really amazing is that, because there were so many students, it means that even if a student posed a question at 3 o’clock in the morning, somewhere around the world, there would be somebody who was awake and working on the same problem, and he might answer that question. And so, in many of the online course, the median response time for a question on the question and answer forum was 22 minutes. So in a word, if we wanted to offer top quality education to everyone around the world for free, what would that affect us?Three things. (8) First, it would establish education as a fundamental human right, where anyone around the world with the ability and the motivation could get the skills they need. (9) Second, it would enable lifelong learning. It’s a shame that for so many of us, learning stops when we finish high school or when we finish college. By making this amazing content available, we would be able to lea rn something new every time we wanted, whether it’s just to expand our minds or it’s to change our lives.(10) And finally, this would make a wave of innovation possible, because amazing talent can be found everywhere. To sum up today, we have talked about some features of online education and its benefits. We are sure that online education will have a promising future. In the next lecture, we are going to learn how online education has changed people around the world.Conversation One1.A. Joining us with some simple tips on how to deal with those likeable and not so likable neighbors is Betty Wong; she is the Executive Editor of Family Circle magazine. Good morning, Betty.W: Good morning, Allen.M: Well, in an ideal world, I guess we would all get along with our neighbors, wouldn’t we? W: Right, right. We hope so.M : But how do we establish a good relationship? When you move into a neighborhood, right, should you reach out to the neighbors or should they be reaching out to you?W: I think it could work either way. I mean, certainly, if they don’t reach out to you, don’t assume that they are being rude or unfriendly. They just might be holding back because they think you are too busy. So if they don’t make that first step, you know, after a few days, go ahead and introduce yourself.M: Yeah, neighbors can be really helpful, but of course they can also be annoying. For example, neighbors who make a lot of noise.W: Well. Loud music is one of those top complaints, and I think you know for most reasons… people, they probably aren’t even aware that they are causing problems for their neighbors. And I think if you bring it up t o your neighbors’ attentio n they will be more than happy to fix it. You could say something like, you know, I’m kind of, I’m really a light sleeper or I suffer from headache. Can you help me out by, you know, turning down the music during those evening hours or the early morning or come up with a compromise that works for both of you.M: Don’t just call the police, right? Which a lot of people do.W: Of course, no.M: Right, then what about a nosy neighbor.W: Right, I think a lot of time as we may mistake nosy behavior for being, you know, nosy or poky when they are just being kind of trying to be friendly, or maybe that person’s lonely. It’s…. You kind of have to see what the motive is there, andoftentimes, if you are little evasive, or, you just don’t a nswer their question, they often take the hint and back off.M: And the neighbor that comes to visit and wont go way?W: Well, I think, you know that, there might be somebody who is just really lonely and wants a friend. You know oftentimes I think the rule is a five or ten minute-visit, is fine. Because you know that way you are not imposing on that person’s schedule or that person’s plan. But you know, you don’t have to be best friends with your neighbor at all, you can just be polite, and say hello in th e morning, and that makes everybody’s relationship so much better.M: Well, that’s important. Does he imagine that by saying this he is encouraging us to feel great confidence in him in the future and to expect comfort, advice, and help from him in the difficult situations of life? (Hemingway )美文欣赏4 (A formal official Letter)Liao Chengzhi' s Letter to Mr. Chiang Ching-KuoDear brother Ching-Kuo,No one ever expected that a strip of water should have become so vast a distance. It is now 36 years since our brief rendezvous in Nanjing. From our childhood friendship to our chats in the Soviet capital, everything in the past is still alive in my memory. But it's unfortunate that we haven't heard from each other for so many years. Recently I was told that you are somewhat indisposed and this has caused me much concern. Men in their seventies are often afflicted with illness. I sincerely hope that you will take good care of yourself.Over the past three years, our party has repeatedly proposed talks with your party to bury the hatchet and work jointly to accomplish the great cause of national reunification. But you have time and again announced that there should be "no contact, no talks and no compromise", which I think is inadvisable. Considering both the public interests and our close friendship which has lasted for generations, I regard it as my duty to offer some advice which I hope you will consider carefully. The peaceful reunification of the motherland would be a great achievement to be recorded in history. Taiwan is bound to return to the embrace of the motherland eventually. An early settlement would be in the interest of all. The compatriots in Taiwan would be able to live in peace and happiness, the people of all nationalities on both sides of the Taiwan straits would no longer have to endure the pains of separation from their kith and kin, and the elders in Taiwan and those who have moved there from the mainland would all be properly placed and provided for. And this would contribute to the stability of Asia and the Pacific region as well as to world peace. You used to spur yourself on with the axiom: "The interests to be considered should be the interests of all; the fame to be sought should be a fame that would last forever.” If the great cause of reunification would be accomplis hed through your work, you will certainly win the esteem of the nation and the praise of all. You would be doing meritorious service to the country and your name would be inscribed in the temple of fame. It is preposterous to regard such a service as “guilt”. After all, putting up in that tight eastern comer is not a long-term solution. This is of course quite clear for a man as intelligent as you. Hesitation, procrastination or leaving the problem to other days would only lead to difficulty and distress and you, my brother, £®would hardly be able to escape the blame. Moreover, peacefulreunification is entirely an internal affair of China. Those outsiders who talk glibly about it have designs on our Taiwan. This is common knowledge. When a decision needs to be made, irresolution is bound to bring trouble. I hope you will consider this carefully. The Kuomintang, founded by Dr. Sun Yat-sen endured countless hardships and finally overthrew the monarchy and established the republic; numerous revolutionaries advanced wave after wave and laid down their lives for the cause. History has recorded this as a glorious contribution. The Kuomintang and the Communist Party twice cooperated and on both occasions they made tremendous contributions to the country and the nation. We know something about the fast cooperation, led by Dr. Sun Yat-sen, though we were still young at that time. The second cooperation proceeded with your father in the chair and, as participants in it, we should know what it was all about. Though the matter was as complicated as could be, an all-round view of the situation would show that cooperation is beneficial to the country and the nation while division is detrimental to them. Since you are presiding over the administration of Taiwan, you have unshirkable responsibility for the realization of cooperation for the third time. It would be easier to talk the matter over when leaders on both sides used to be schoolmates and close friends who know one another well. I find it really hard for me to subscribe to those views which describe cooperation as "surrender", "humiliating", "suffering losses" or "being duped. In reviewing history or looking forward to the future, one should bear in mind the public interest, the interests of the country and the nation, and use this as the supreme criterion, instead of basing oneself on a party's selfish interests. Such talks as "reunifying China with the Three People's Principles" are regarded by all sensible people as unrealistic, deceptive and self-deceiving. People of¡£ generation know the true meaning of the Three People's Principles quite well and there is no need to argue about it. Neither is there any need to dwell on such assertions as Taiwan's "economic prosperity, democracy and easy livelihood", the truth of which the venerable gentlemen in Taiwan know clearly. For the sake of your party, I would think that if you would take up the historical responsibility and resolutely take part in peace talks to accomplish national reunification as required by time and tide, the two parties would be able to co-exist for a long time to come, supervising each other while joining in the glorious effort to revitalize China. Otherwise how the situation existing in that small corner could be maintained for long? This is a question those who are sensible are already turning over in their minds. It involves the survival and development of the Kuomintang and I hope you will think it over again.I recently read one of your writings in which you expressed "fervent hopes that my father's soul would be able to return to the homeland and be reunited with the forefathers". I was overwhelmed with emotion when I read this. The remains of your father are still placed temporarily at Cihu. After reunification, they would be moved back and buried in the native soil---in Fenghua, Nanjing or Lushan---in fulfillment of your filial wishes. You recently said, "filial devotion should be expanded into national devotion, which means love of the nation and dedication to the country". This is an excellent statement. Why don't you apply it to the great cause of national reunification? As far as the country and nation are concerned, this would be an expression of both loyalty and filial piety. Otherwise how could you account for yourself after your passing away? It is hoped that you would think more about it.Dear brother! Your life has been marked by frustration, which should not be attributed to fate. Everything depends on yourself. The good and ill to be judged in the next thousand years hinge on the decision made in a moment. The present international situation is capricious. Throughout Taiwan people of all strata are talking about their future. Time does not stay and brief is the day. A long night is fraught with dreams; time does not wait for us. I hope you, my brother, would be good at making the choice and repair the house before it rains. Vast is the expanse of sky and water. What are you waiting for, staying away from home? The longing for old friends grows with age. If it is convenient to you, I would pack and set out for a visit to Taibei to seek enlightenment from our elders. "For all the disasters the brotherhood has remained; a smile at meeting and enmity is banished.” When I look towards the distant southern sky, my heart is already there. No word is enough to express what I wish to say. It is hoped that you will take good care of yourself. I am waiting impatiently for a reply. Please convey my regards to your mother as well as to Fang-Liang, Wei-Kuo and the children.Best wishes to you,Liao ChengzhiJuly 24, 1982An informal Letter (A student to a teacher)Prof. ChenMar. 26, 1987I have just received your letter of March 21. 1 was happy to hear that you are well and that you are invited to give lectures in Xi'an Foreign Languages Institute during the summer vacation. How nice it will be to see you again!Things here are going smoothly; and I haven't a thing to be unhappy about. I'd like to thank you heartily for your deep concern about me and great confidence in me.For the next three weeks there will be a general checkup on our teaching work and studies. I have already drawn up a plan with the help of other teachers. According to the requirements of the administration of our university, I intend to do the work in this way:a) Organize two demonstration lessons, one for the first grade teachers, the other for the second grade teachers.b) The teachers will attend each other's classes at least once during the period.c) Organize meetings of students of different grades so as to solicit their opinions and suggestions. The plan is based on the consideration that good experience should be popularized and shortcomings overcome as soon as possible. Please let me have your advice and instructions in regard to this plan.I was very glad to know that you are getting on well with your book. I wish it would come out soon, for I'm sure I can get a great deal from it. I hope you and your wife are enjoying yourselves in Beijing. You say your wife will go to the U. S. next month to see your daughter. Who will take care of you during her one-month stay in the U. S? Don't hesitate to ask Huang Yaping, Qi Min and others for help when you need it.Best wishes,Your student,Ding Xiaoya。

生命中最重要的东西是什么英语作文全文共3篇示例,供读者参考篇1What is the Most Important Thing in Life?Life is full of so many things - games, toys, snacks, friends, family, school, and more. But what is the most important thing in life? It's something that makes everything better and more fun. Something that makes the hard times easier and the good times even better. After thinking about it a lot, I realized that the most important thing in life is love.Love makes the world go round, as they say. It's a special feeling that warms your heart and makes you happy inside. Love comes in many different forms - the love from your parents and family, the love you have for your friends, even the love you can have for your favorite stuffed animal or video game. All different kinds of love are important. The love from your parents is one of the most special loves of all. Your parents love you more than anything in the whole world. They take care of you, give you hugs and kisses, tuck you in at night, and are always there for you no matter what. Mymom and dad show their love by making my favorite meals, helping me with my homework, playing games with me, and telling me they love me every single day. I love them so much too!The love you have for your friends is also really important. Your friends are the ones you laugh with, have fun with, and make memories with. You love playing together at recess, having sleepovers, and just being silly kids. My best friend Jack and I have been friends since we were babies. We love goofing around, riding our bikes, and our favorite thing is building awesome forts out of branches, leaves, and old boxes. No matter what, we're there for each other through thick and thin. You can even have love for your favorite toy or stuffed animal. I absolutely love my teddy bear Brownie that I've had since I was a tiny baby. Brownie has been with me through everything - he was there when I took my first steps, said my first words, and went to my first day of school. I take him everywhere and tell him all my secrets. The love I have for Brownie will never go away.Love from your family makes you feel safe, secure, and cared for. Love from your friends fills your life with laughter, fun, and happiness. And the love you have for special toys andbelongings holds sweet memories. All these different types of love are what make life so wonderful and amazing. But love doesn't just come from people and possessions. We can love activities and hobbies too! I love playing soccer more than anything. From the moment I step onto that field, I'm filled with joy and love for the game. Dribbling the ball, passing to teammates, and scoring goals makes me happier than anything in the world. Soccer is my biggest passion and love.My friend Emily absolutely loves drawing and painting. As soon as she picks up her pencils, markers, or paintbrushes, she gets a huge smile on her face. She loves creating beautiful artwork and seeing her imagination come to life on the paper or canvas. For her, art is a huge love in her life that sparks her creativity and individuality. So you see, love can be felt for so many different people, things, and activities. No matter what form it takes, love is what gives life sparkle and makes it truly amazing. It turns a regular, ordinary day into something special and memorable. It takes the good times and makes them even better. And it helps you get through the bad times too. When I'm having a bad day at school or get in a fight with my friend, I remember how much love I have from my parents,my teddy bear, and my favorite hobbies. That love helps cheer me up and get through the tough times. It's like love gives you a warm hug and helps you keep going. And during the happiest, most fun times of my life, love makes them one million times better! Going to Disneyland, having a birthday party, or just playing at the park - love heightens all those amazing moments and experiences. Love from my family, friends, and favorite things makes the great times absolutely perfect and incredible. That's why I truly believe that love is the most important thing in life, no matter how young or old you are. Love comes from your heart and makes you feel all warm and fuzzy inside. It comes in so many shapes and forms - your parents, siblings, friends, pets, toys, activities, anything! As long as you have love in your life, you have what's most important. So spread love everywhere you go! Tell someone how much you love them. Give your toys and stuffed animals extra hugs and cuddles. Put your whole heart into the activities and hobbies you love. And most importantly, love yourself! Because when you live a life full of love, you are living life to the fullest. And that's the greatest thing of all.篇2What is the Most Important Thing in Life?Have you ever thought about what is really important in life?I mean, really really important - the thing that matters most of all?I have, and I've decided that the most important thing in life is being happy. Being truly happy, feeling joyful and content deep down inside. That's what life should really be about. Some people might say that money is the most important thing. It's true that having enough money to buy food, a home, clothes and other needs is pretty essential. But just having tons of money and fancy stuff doesn't automatically make you happy. I've seen super rich celebrities on TV who seem miserable despite all their wealth. Money can help, but it's not the source of true happiness.Others might claim that fame and being popular is the ultimate goal in life. Who doesn't want to be admired and looked up to by everyone? Having people chant your name and beg for your autograph sounds amazing! But again, famous people aren't necessarily happy famous people. The pressure of being in the public eye constantly must be really hard. True happiness has to come from within, not from other people's admiration. Some kids might say that the most important thing is having the latest toy, video game or tech gadget. I'll admit, getting a brand new gaming system or virtual reality headset would be super exciting at first. But that new feeling doesn't last. Pretty soon, you just want the next new thing. Material possessions can't bring lasting happiness and fulfillment. What about getting perfect grades or being the best student? That's definitely important, and I try my hardest in school. But there's way more to life than just homework, tests and report cards. Nobody lays on their deathbed wishing they had aced a few more spelling quizzes when they were young. Education matters, but it's not the ultimate goal. Then what is? What's the secret to real, long-lasting happiness and satisfaction in this world? Well, I may just be a kid, but I've given this a lot of thought. Here's what I've figured out is most important in life...First of all, happiness comes from the people we love - our families and true friends who genuinely care about us. Having people in your life who love you for who you are, who support you, listen to you, make you laugh, and are always there for you - that's one of the keys to lasting happiness and meaning. Myparents, my siblings, my closest friends - they make me happier than anything else.Appreciating the beauty of nature is another source of deep fulfillment and joy. Have you ever gone hiking in the mountains or spent a day at the beach? Seeing the vastness of the ocean, the towering trees, a colorful sunset - it makes you feel so peaceful and glad to be alive. Being outdoors in nature helps me not take the miracle of life on this planet for granted.Contributing to others and making a positive difference, even in some small way, brings a profound sense of contentment. Whether it's helping a friend with their homework, volunteering at a food bank, or simply being kind to someone having a bad day - using your talents to brighten someone else's life creates its own inexplicable happiness. Focusing just on yourself is an empty, lonely existence. Thinking of others really matters.Perhaps most importantly, being true to your own values and moral principles leads to inner peace and wholeness. Having the courage to always do what you know is right in your heart, to stand up for justice rather than be a bystander, to not compromise your ethics just to be popular - that builds unshakable character and self-respect. If you lose your integrity, you lose your ability to be genuinely happy with yourself. In the end, I believe the source of authentic happiness comes from nurturing your most treasured relationships, appreciating the natural wonders of our world, making an effort to help others, and living with integrity according to your values. These things fill your soul with a lasting sense of purpose, contentment and inner peace. They connect you to something greater than just your own wants and needs.Sure, having some money, successes and nice things can make life more pleasant and comfortable. But they aren't enough on their own. True fulfillment has to come from these deeper places inside of us - our bonds with loved ones, our appreciation for life's beauty, our drive to spread kindness, and our commitment to honorable principles. That's the most important thing to devote yourself to in life - things that will make you truly happy from the inside out. An existence guided by these values leads to richness in all the ways that really matter - richness of the heart, mind, character and spirit. That's the wealth that no amount of money or fame could ever buy. Those are just my thoughts as a kid, but I really believe that's where you'll find lasting joy and meaning. So appreciate loved ones. Marvel at nature's wonders. Help others. Do the right thing. That's the path to experiencing what'smost important - genuine happiness and fulfillment each and every day you're alive.篇3What is the Most Important Thing in Life? That's a really big question that even grown-ups have a hard time answering. There are so many important things in life - our families, our friends, staying healthy, getting a good education, doing well in school, and more. But if I had to pick just one thing that I think is the absolute most important of all, I would say it's being kind.Kindness is about caring for others and treating them with respect, compassion, and generosity, even if they are different from you. It means going out of your way to help someone in need, or doing little things to make someone's day brighter, like smiling at them or giving them a compliment. It could be sticking up for someone who is being bullied or picked on. It might be sharing your toys or snacks with a friend, or volunteering to help clean up your classroom after art time.I think kindness is so important because it makes the world a better place for everyone. When people are kind to each other, they spread more happiness and positivity. It creates anenvironment of caring instead of meanness. Isn't it much nicer to be around people who are friendly and thoughtful rather than people who are selfish and rude?Being kind doesn't cost anything, but it can make such a big difference to someone's life. Maybe you cheer up a classmate who was having a bad day. Or you make a new kid feel welcome at school by inviting them to join your game at recess. Small acts of kindness might seem little, but they can mean so much to the person receiving them.Kindness is also good for you! Studies show that being kind can actually make you happier and healthier. When you do something nice for someone, your brain gets a little rush that makes you feel good. Kindness also helps you make more friends and have better relationships. After all, who doesn't want to be friends with someone who is caring and considerate?Of course, it's not always easy to be kind, especially if someone has been unkind to you first. Sometimes you might feel jealous of a friend who got a better grade, or annoyed with your little brother or sister for being pesky. In those moments, you have to make an effort to be the bigger person and respond with kindness instead of meanness.Think about it - if everyone went around being cruel and horrible to each other, what kind of world would that be? Not a very fun one to live in! But when people are compassionate, helpful, and kind, it makes the world a much nicer place for all of us.Kindness doesn't just make things better for others, it makes your own life better too. Being kind allows you to see the best in people instead of the worst. It helps you focus on what you can give to others rather than just taking. It makes you appreciate the good things you have instead of jealously wanting what others have. Overall, it gives you a more positive outlook.I try to practice kindness as much as I can, but I'll be the first to admit that I don't always succeed. Sometimes I get upset and say or do something unkind by accident. But then I remember how important it is to be kind, and I apology and try to make it right. Nobody is perfect, but just having kindness as one of your most important values means you'll keep trying your best.At school, at home, on the playground, or anywhere else, I want to be known as a kind person. I want to stick up for the kid being bullied, include anyone who is left out, and be a good friend who helps others. I don't want to be the kid who makes fun of others, brags about themselves, or only cares aboutgetting ahead while pushing others down. Kindness is the way I want to live my life.So while there are lots of important things like being a good student, staying healthy, and loving your family, I believe kindness is the most important of all. With kindness, you'll be a better friend, student, son or daughter, and person overall. Kindness makes you feel good while making the world better for everyone around you too. It makes your life more positive and meaningful.Plus, just imagine how great it would be if everyone made an effort to be kinder! Our schools, neighborhoods, and the whole world would be happier, more caring places. Every single person would feel valued instead of mistreated or left out. We could solve problems through compassion and empathy rather than conflict. In my opinion, if everyone prioritized kindness and treated each other the way they wanted to be treated themselves, the world would be absolutely amazing. No more bullying, loneliness, arguments, or hatred. Just lots of smiles, helping hands, acceptance, and people looking out for each other. Kindness is free, so why not make it a priority and spread as much of it asyou can? You'll make life better for yourself and everyone around you.。

And once as he was sitting with his rod, looking at the clear water, his line suddenly went down, far down below, and when he drew it up again he brought out a large Flounder. Then the Flounder said to him, "Hark, you Fisherman, I pray you, let me live, I am no Flounder really, but an enchanted prince. What good will it do you to kill me? I should not be good to eat, put me in the water again, and let me go." "Come," said the Fisherman, "there is no need for so many words about it —— a fish that can talk I should certainly let go, anyhow," with that he put him back again into the clear water, and the Flounder went to the bottom, leaving a long streak of blood behind him. Then the Fisherman got up and went home to his wife in the hovel."Husband," said the woman, "have you caught nothing to-day?" "No," said the man, "I did catch a Flounder, who said he was an enchanted prince, so I let him go again." "Did you not wish for anything first?" said the woman. "No," said the man; "what should I wish for?" "Ah," said the woman, "it is surely hard to have to live always in this dirty hovel; you might have wished for a small cottage for us. Go back and call him. Tell him we want to have a small cottage, he will certainly give us that." "Ah," saidthe man, "why should I go there again?" "Why," said the woman, "you did catch him, and you let him go again; he is sure to do it. Go at once." The man still did not quite like to go, but did not like to oppose his wife, and went to the sea. When he got there the sea was all green and yellow, and no longer so smooth; so he stood still and said,"Flounder, flounder in the sea,Come, I pray thee, here to me;For my wife, good Ilsabil,Wills not as I'd have her will."Then the Flounder came swimming to him and said, "Well what does she want, then?" "Ah," said the man, "I did catch you, and my wife says I really ought to have wished for something. She does not like to live in a wretched hovel any longer. She would like to have a cottage." "Go, then," said the Flounder, "she has it already."When the man went home, his wife was no longer in the hovel, but instead of it there stood a small cottage, and she was sitting on a bench before the door. Then she took him by the hand and said to him, "Just come inside, look, now isn't this a great deal better?" So they went in, and there was a small porch, and a pretty little parlor and bedroom, and a kitchen and pantry, with the best of furniture, and fitted up with the most beautiful things made of tin and brass, whatsoever was wanted. And behind the cottage there was a small yard, with hens and ducks, and a little garden with flowers and fruit. "Look," said the wife, "is not that nice!" "Yes," said the husband, "and so we must always think it, ——now we will live quite contented." "We will think about that," said the wife. With that they ate something and went to bed.Everything went well for a week or a fortnight, and then the woman said, "Hark you, husband, this cottage is far too small for us, and the garden and yard are little; the Flounder might just as well have given us a larger house. I should like to live in a great stone castle; go to the Flounder, and tell him to give us a castle." "Ah, wife," said the man, "the cottage is quite good enough; why should we live in a castle?" "What!" said the woman; "just go there, the Flounder can always do that." "No, wife," said the man, "the Flounder has just given us the cottage, I do not like to go back so soon, it might make him angry." "Go," said the woman, "he can do it quite easily, and will be glad to do it; just you go to him."The man's heart grew heavy, and he would not go. He said to himself, "It is not right," and yet he went. And when he came to the sea the water was quite purple and dark-blue, and grey and thick, and no longer so green and yellow, but it was still quiet. And he stood there and said ——"Flounder, flounder in the sea,Come, I pray thee, here to me;For my wife, good Ilsabil,Wills not as I'd have her will.""Well, what does she want, then?" said the Flounder. "Alas," said the man, half scared, "she wants to live in a great stone castle." "Go to it, then, she is standing before the door," said the Flounder. Then the man went away, intending to go home, but when he got there, he found a great stone palace, and his wife was just standing on the steps going in, and she took him by the hand and said, "Come in." So he went in with her, and in the castle was a great hall paved with marble, and many servants, who flungwide the doors; And the walls were all bright with beautiful hangings, and in the rooms were chairs and tables of pure gold, and crystal chandeliers hung from the ceiling, and all the rooms and bed-rooms had carpets, and food and wine of the very best were standing on all the tables, so that they nearly broke down beneath it. Behind the house, too, there was a great court-yard, with stables for horses and cows, and the very best of carriages; there was a magnificent large garden, too, with the most beautiful flowers and fruit-trees, and a park quite half a mile long, in which were stags, deer, and hares, and everything that could be desired. "Come," said the woman, "isn't that beautiful?" "Yes, indeed," said the man, "now let it be; and we will live in this beautiful castle and be content." "We will consider about that," said the woman, "and sleep upon it;" thereupon they went to bed.Next morning the wife awoke first, and it was just daybreak, and from her bed she saw the beautiful country lying before her. Her husband was still stretching himself, so she poked him in the side with her elbow, and said, "Get up, husband, and just peep out of the window. Look you, couldn't we be the King over all that land? Go to the Flounder, we will be the King." "Ah, wife," said the man, "why should we be King? I do not want to be King." "Well," said the wife, "if you won't be King, I will; go to the Flounder, for I will be King." "Ah, wife," said the man, "why do you want to be King? I do not like to say that to him." "Why not?" said the woman; "go to him this instant; I must be King!" So the man went, and was quite unhappy because his wife wished to be King. "It is not right; it is not right," thought he. He did not wish to go, but yet he went. And when he came to the sea, it was quite dark-grey, and the water heaved up from below, and smelt putrid. Then he went andstood by it, and said,"Flounder, flounder in the sea,Come, I pray thee, here to me;For my wife, good Ilsabil,Wills not as I'd have her will""Well, what does she want, then?" said the Flounder. "Alas," said the man, "she wants to be King." "Go to her; she is King already."So the man went, and when he came to the palace, the castle had become much larger, and had a great tower and magnificent ornaments, and the sentinel was standing before the door, and there were numbers of soldiers with kettle-drums and trumpets. And when he went inside the house, everything was of real marble and gold, with velvet covers and great golden tassels. Then the doors of the hall were opened, and there was the court in all its splendour, and his wife was sitting on a high throne of gold and diamonds, with a great crown of gold on her head, and a sceptre of pure gold and jewels in her hand, and on both sides of her stood her maids-in-waiting in a row, each of them always one head shorter than the last. Then he went and stood before her, and said, "Ah, wife, and now you are King." "Yes," said the woman, "now I am King." So he stood and looked at her, and when he had looked at her thus for some time, he said, "And now that you are King, let all else be, now we will wish for nothing more." "Nay, husband," said the woman, quite anxiously, "I find time pass very heavily, I can bear it no longer; go to the Flounder —— I am King, but I must be Emperor, too." "Alas, wife, why do you wish to be Emperor?" "Husband," said she, "go to the Flounder. I will be Emperor." "Alas, wife," said the man, "he cannot make you Emperor; I may not saythat to the fish. There is only one Emperor in the land. An Emperor the Flounder cannot make you! I assure you he cannot.""What!" said the woman, "I am the King, and you are nothing but my husband; will you go this moment? go at once! If he can make a King he can make an emperor. I will be Emperor; go instantly." So he was forced to go. As the man went, however, he was troubled in mind, and thought to himself, "It will not end well; it will not end well! Emperor is too shameless! The Flounder will at last be tired out."With that he reached the sea, and the sea was quite black and thick, and began to boil up from below, so that it threw up bubbles, and such a sharp wind blew over it that it curdled, and the man was afraid. Then he went and stood by it, and said, "Flounder, flounder in the sea,Come, I pray thee, here to me;For my wife, good Ilsabil,Wills not as I'd have her will.""Well, what does she want, then?" said the Flounder. "Alas, Flounder," said he, "my wife wants to be Emperor." "Go to her," said the Flounder; "she is Emperor already."So the man went, and when he got there the whole palace was made of polished marble with alabaster figures and golden ornaments, and soldiers were marching before the door blowing trumpets, and beating cymbals and drums; and in the house, barons, and counts, and dukes were going about as servants. Then they opened the doors to him, which were of pure gold. And when he entered, there sat his wife on a throne, which was made of one piece of gold, and was quite two miles high; and she wore a great golden crown that was three yards high, and set with diamonds and carbuncles, and in one hand she had thesceptre, and in the other the imperial orb; and on both sides of her stood the yeomen of the guard in two rows, each being smaller than the one before him, from the biggest giant, who was two miles high, to the very smallest dwarf, just as big as my little finger. And before it stood a number of princes and dukes. Then the man went and stood among them, and said, "Wife, are you Emperor now?" "Yes," said she, "now I am Emperor." Then he stood and looked at her well, and when he had looked at her thus for some time, he said, "Ah, wife, be content, now that you are Emperor." "Husband," said she, "why are you standing there? Now, I am Emperor, but I will be Pope too; go to the Flounder." "Alas, wife," said the man, "what will you not wish for? You cannot be Pope. There is but one in Christendom. He cannot make you Pope." "Husband," said she, "I will be Pope; go immediately, I must be Pope this very day." "No, wife," said the man, "I do not like to say that to him; that would not do, it is too much; the Flounder can't make you Pope." "Husband," said she, "what nonsense! If he can make an emperor he can make a pope. Go to him directly. I am Emperor, and you are nothing but my husband; will you go at once?"Then he was afraid and went; but he was quite faint, and shivered and shook, and his knees and legs trembled. And a high wind blew over the land, and the clouds flew, and towards evening all grew dark, and the leaves fell from the trees, and the water rose and roared as if it were boiling, and splashed upon the shore. And in the distance he saw ships which were firing guns in their sore need, pitching and tossing on the waves. And yet in the midst of the sky there was still a small bit of blue, though on every side it was as red as in a heavy storm. So, full of despair, he went and stood in much fear and said,"Flounder, flounder in the sea,Come, I pray thee, here to me;"For my wife, good Ilsabil,Wills not as I'd have her will."Well, what does she want, then?" said the Flounder. "Alas," said the man, "she wants to be Pope." "Go to her then," said the Flounder; "she is Pope already."So he went, and when he got there, he saw what seemed to be a large church surrounded by palaces. He pushed his way through the crowd. Inside, however, everything was lighted up with thousands and thousands of candles, and his wife was clad in gold, and she was sitting on a much higher throne, and had three great golden crowns on, and round about her there was much ecclesiastical splendour; and on both sides of her was a row of candles the largest of which was as tall as the very tallest tower, down to the very smallest kitchen candle, and all the emperors and kings were on their knees before her, kissing her shoe. "Wife," said the man, and looked attentively at her, "are you now Pope?" "Yes," said she, "I am Pope." So he stood and looked at her, and it was just as if he was looking at the bright sun. When he had stood looking at her thus for a short time, he said, "Ah, wife, if you are Pope, do let well alone!" But she looked as stiff as a post, and did not move or show any signs of life. Then said he, "Wife, now that you are Pope, be satisfied, you cannot become anything greater now." "I will consider about that," said the woman. Thereupon they both went to bed, but she was not satisfied, and greediness let her have no sleep, for she was continually thinking what there was left for her to be.The man slept well and soundly, for he had run about a great deal during the day; but the woman could not fall asleep at all,and flung herself from one side to the other the whole night through, thinking always what more was left for her to be, but unable to call to mind anything else. At length the sun began to rise, and when the woman saw the red of dawn, she sat up in bed and looked at it. And when, through the window, she saw the sun thus rising, she said, "Cannot I, too, order the sun and moon to rise?" "Husband," she said, poking him in the ribs with her elbows, "wake up! go to the Flounder, for I wish to be even as God is." The man was still half asleep, but he was so horrified that he fell out of bed. He thought he must have heard amiss, and rubbed his eyes, and said, "Alas, wife, what are you saying?" "Husband," said she, "if I can't order the sun and moon to rise, and have to look on and see the sun and moon rising, I can't bear it. I shall not know what it is to have another happy hour, unless I can make them rise myself." Then she looked at him so terribly that a shudder ran over him, and said, "Go at once; I wish to be like unto God." "Alas, wife," said the man, falling on his knees before her, "the Flounder cannot do that; he can make an emperor and a pope; I beseech you, go on as you are, and be Pope." Then she fell into a rage, and her hair flew wildly about her head, and she cried, "I will not endure this, I'll not bear it any longer; wilt thou go?" Then he put on his trousers and ran away like a madman. But outside a great storm was raging, and blowing so hard that he could scarcely keep his feet; houses and trees toppled over, the mountains trembled, rocks rolled into the sea, the sky was pitch black, and it thundered and lightened, and the sea came in with black waves as high as church-towers and mountains, and all with crests of white foam at the top. Then he cried, but could not hear his own words,"Flounder, flounder in the sea,Come, I pray thee, here to me;For my wife, good Ilsabil,Wills not as I'd have her will.""Well, what does she want, then?" said the Flounder. "Alas," said he, "she wants to be like unto God." "Go to her, and you will find her back again in the dirty hovel."

What´s the connection between a wet day and a search for buried treasure? Well, it´s quite simple. Ireland, as some of you may already know, is the home of Leprechauns—little men who possess magic powers and, perhaps more interestingly, pots of gold.(2)Now, although Leprechauns are interesting characters, I have to admit that I was more interested in the stories of their treasure hoard. This, as all of Ireland knows, they hide at the end of the rainbow. Leprechauns can be fearsome folk but if you can discover the end of the rainbow, they have to unwillingly surrender their gold to you. So whenever it rained, I would look up in the sky and follow the curve of the rainbow to see where it ended. I never did unearth any treasure, but I did spend many happy, showery days dreaming of what I could do with the fortune if I found it.(3)As I got older, and started working, rainy days came to be just another nuisance and my childhood dreams of finding treasure faded. But for some people the dream of striking it luckynever fades, and for a fortunate few, the dream even comes true! Such is the case of Mel Fisher. His dream of finding treasure also began in childhood, while reading the great literature classics "Treasure Island" and "Moby Dick". However, unlike me, he chased his dream and in the end managed to become one of the most famous professional treasure hunters of all time, and for good reason. In 1985, he fished up the priceless cargo of the sunken Spanish ship Atocha, which netted him an incredible 400 million dollars!(4)After the ship sank in 1622 off the coast of Florida, its murky waters became a treasure-trove(埋藏的宝藏)of precious stones, gold bars and silver coins known as "pieces of eight". The aptly-named Fisher, who ran a commercial salvaging operation, had been trying to locate the underwater treasure for over 16 years when he finally hit the jackpotl His dreams had come true but finding and keeping the treasure wasn´t all plain sailing. After battling with hostile conditions at sea, Fisher then had to battle in the courts. In fact, the State of Florida took Fisher to court over ownership of the find and the Federal government soon followed suit. After more than 200 hearings, Fisher agreed to donate 20% of his findings for public display, and so now there is a museum in Florida which displays hundreds of the objects which were salvaged from the Atocha.(5)This true story seems like a modern-day fairytale: a man pursues his dream through hardship and in the end, he triumphs over the difficulties—they all live happily ever after, right? Well, not exactly. Archaeologists object to the fact that with commercial salvaging operations like Fisher´s, the objects are sold and dispersed, and UNESCO are also worried about protecting our underwater heritage from what it describes as "pillaging"(抢劫、掠夺).(6)The counter-argument is that in professional, well-run operations such as Fisher´s, each piece is accurately and minutely recorded and that it is this information which is more important than the actual object, and that such operations help increase our wealth of archaeological knowledge. Indeed, as in Fisher´s case, they make history more accessible to people through museum donations and information on web sites.(7)The distinction of whether these treasure hunters are salvaging or pillaging our underwater heritage may not be clear, but what is clear is that treasure hunting is not just innocent child´s play anymore but profitable big business. I have learnt that the end of the rainbow is beyond my reach, but in consolation, with just a click of the mouse, I too can have a share in the riches that the Atocha has revealed. As Friedrich Nietzsche so wisely said: "Our treasure lies in the beehive of our knowledge. "第51题In Para. 4, the phrase "hit the jackpot" means _____ according to the context.A.discovered the jackpotB.found the treasureC.broke one of the objectsD.ran a salvaging operation第52题It can be concluded from Paras. 5 and 6 that _____.A.People hold entirely different views on the issueB.UNESCO´s view is different from archaeologists´C.all salvaging operations should be prohibitedD.attention should be paid to the find´s educational value第53题How did the author feel about the treasure from the Atocha(Para. 7)?A.She was unconcerned about where the treasure came from.B.She was sad that she was unable to discover and salvage treasure.C.She was angry that treasure hunters were pillaging heritage.D.She was glad that people can have a chance to see the treasure.上一题下一题(54~56/共10题)PART ⅤREADING COMPREHENSIONSECTION A MULTIPLE-CHOICE QUESTIONSIn this section there are three passages followed by ten multiple-choice questions. For each multiple-choice question, there are four suggested answers marked A, B, C and D.Choose the one that you think is the best answer and mark your answers on ANSWER SHEET TWO.(1)Paul was dissatisfied with himself and with everything. The deepest of his love belonged to his mother. When he felt he had hurt her, or wounded his love for her, he could not bear it. Now it was spring and there was battle between him and Miriam, his girlfriend. This year he had a good deal against her. She was vaguely aware of it. The old feeling that she was to be sacrifice to this love, which she had had when she prayed, was mingled in all her emotions. She did not at the bottom believe she ever would have him. She did not believe in herself primarily: doubted whether she could ever be what he would demand of her. Certainly she never saw herself living happily through a lifetime with him. She saw tragedy, sorrow, and sacrifice ahead. And in sacrifice she was proud, in renunciation she was strong, for she did not trust herself to support everyday life. She was prepared for the big things and the deep things, like tragedy. It was the sufficiency of the small day-life she could not trust.(2)The Easter holidays began happily. Paul was his own frank self. Yet she felt it would go wrong. On the Sunday afternoon she stood at her bedroom window, looking across at the oak-trees of the wood, in whose branches a twilight was tangled, below the bright sky of the afternoon. Grey-green rosettes of honeysuckle leaves hung before the window, some already, she fancied, showing bud. It was spring, which she loved and dreaded.(3)Hearing the clack of the gate she stood in suspense. It was a bright grey day. Paul came into the yard with his bicycle, which glittered as he walked. Usually he rang his bell and laughed towards the house. Today he walked with shut lips and cold, cruel bearing, that had something of a slouch and a sneer in it. She knew him well by now, and could tell from keen-looking what was happening inside him. There was a cold correctness in the way he put his bicycle in its place, that made her heart sink.(4)She came downstairs nervously. She was wearing a new net blouse that she thought became her. It had a high collar with a tiny ruff, making her, she thought, look wonderfully a woman, and dignified. At twenty she was full-breasted and luxuriously formed. Her face was still like a soft rich mask, unchangeable. But her eyes, once lifted, were wonderful. She was afraid of him. He would notice her new blouse.(5)He, being in a hard, ironical mood, was entertaining the family to a description of a service given in the Primitive Methodist Chapel. He sat at the head of the table, his mobile face, with the eyes that could be so beautiful, shining with tenderness or dancing with laughter, now taking on one expression and then another, in imitation of various people he was mocking. His mockery always hurt her: it was too near the reality. He was too clever and cruel. She felt that when hiseyes were like this, hard with mocking hate, he would spare neither himself nor anybody else. But Miriam´s mother was wiping her eyes with laughter, and her father, just awake from his Sunday nap, was rubbing his head in amusement. The three brothers sat with ruffled, sleepy appearance in their shirt-sleeves, giving a guffaw from time to time. The whole family loved a "take-off" more than anything.第54题It can be learned from the beginning that Miriam´s attitude towards love between her and Paul is_____.A.indifferentB.desperateC.pessimisticD.ambiguous第55题The narration in Para 3 tells us that Miriam had all the following feelings EXCEPT _____.A.delightB.expectationC.uncertaintyD.foreboding第56题Which of the following statements is CORRECT about the family´s response to Paul´s mockery?A.Only the parents found it entertaining.B.Every member except Miriam was amused.C.The brothers found it hard to appreciate.D.Miriam also thought it was amusing.上一题下一题(57~60/共10题)PART ⅤREADING COMPREHENSIONSECTION A MULTIPLE-CHOICE QUESTIONSIn this section there are three passages followed by ten multiple-choice questions. For each multiple-choice question, there are four suggested answers marked A, B, C and D.Choose the one that you think is the best answer and mark your answers on ANSWER SHEET TWO.(1)I´ve written this article and you´re reading it. So we are members of the same club. We´re both literate—we can read and write. And we both probably feel that literacy is essential to our lives. But millions of people all over the world are illiterate. Even in industrialised Western countries, such as the UK and the USA, approximately 20% of the population have "low literacy levels". But what exactly does that mean?(2)My parents both left school at 14. They could read and write, but except for a quick look at the daily newspaper, reading and writing didn´t play a big part in their lives. There were very few books in the house. My mother was amazed because the woman who lived next door always wrote a list of what she needed before she went to the supermarket. Why couldn´t she remember? We laughed about that for weeks. Our family didn´t write lists! And when I was only 14 years old my father gave me an important letter that he´d written to the bank and asked me to check it for grammar and spelling mistakes. And there were quite a lot. He never usually wrote letters or postcards or even Christmas cards. So when he had to write he wasn´t comfortable or confident. Does that mean that my father had a "low level of literacy"? I don´t think so.(3)There are lots of different definitions of literacy. Some experts define it as having the reading and writing skills that you need to be independent in your everyday life. So, for example, if you can read instructions, write a cheque, fill in a form,—anything that you need to do in everyday life—then you are "functionally literate".(4)Other people say that you are illiterate if you think that you are illiterate. In other words, if you feel that you can´t read or write as well as you would like to.(5)If you live in a society where most people are literate, then you will feel ashamed or embarrassed and avoid situations in which you have to read or write. The father of a friend of mine finally admitted to his family that he couldn´t read when he was 45 years old. He bought the newspaper every day and pretended to read it—and believe it or not, his family had no idea.(6)We often forget that writing is a recent invention. Many years ago, the word "literate" meant being able to communicate well in speaking, in other words what we now call "articulate". Story telling was an important activity in the past and still is today in some societies. Reading was often a co-operative activity—someone would read aloud to a group, often from a religious text such as the Koran or the Bible.(7)Only a hundred years ago, in the United States, you were considered to be literate if you could sign your name to a piece of paper. It was an important skill. You were not allowed to vote if you couldn´t sign the voting register, so literacy was connected with political rights, and many people were excluded from the democratic process.(8)Nowadays we see reading and writing as being connected, but that wasn´t so in the past Many people could read, but not write. Writing was a skilled profession. If you needed something written then you paid an expert to write it for you.(9)And of course, rich and important people have always employed people to write things for them. Important company bosses dictated letters to their secretaries or personal assistants. And now with new computer software you can dictate directly to your computer.(10)Being illiterate can have a big effect on people´s lives. For example, a study in the UK showed that people who write and spell badly are seen as careless, immature and unreliable, and often unintelligent. So it is more difficult for them to find jobs, even when reading and writing are not necessary for the work.(11)World-wide statistics show that literacy problems are associated with poverty and a lack of political power. More women than men are illiterate. Illiterate people have worse health, bigger families and are more likely to go to prison. So literacy campaigns must be a good thing. Three Sayings Make a Thing
Born into a family full of commercial atmosphere, the notion of finance has been deep-rooted since my childhood. My father, an astute but also generous businessman, has successfully transmitted his shrewd, businesslike mind to hi s beloved daughter, and perhaps that’s why I got my shiny red saving’s pot so early. Until now, from those valuable lessons I learned from my father, I’ve developed a passably complete financial thought of my own, which can be concluded into three simple s ayings. Here I’d just like to share them with all of my audience.
The first saying goes like this: Don’t wait for chances to fall down, but set out to seek for them. Since there’s no point in budgeting without money, learning to gain it becomes the initial step in dealing with financial problems. No matter in what way you earn your money, remembering this basic notion can bring fortune to your success. Let’s just give a think to the richest person in the world-Bill Gates. If he didn’t discover and seize the chance existing in the software market, he wouldn’t have become the big boy he now is. Of course, not everyone possess the courage to drop from Harvard to pursue his dream, but sometimes a terrific opportunity is really just around the corner, and the difference between people usually lies in whether you get the wisdom to seek for it or not. So when faced with financial problems, let’s just act, and leave nothing to regret.
My second saying is: To earn money by courage, to save it by intelligence. To expound it, I have a story to share. It happened many years ago when I was just a willful urchin. My father bought me a saving’s pot at the beginning of summer vacation. I can still remember what it looked like: a shiny red house with a cute puppy waiting at the door, collecting every coin it can reach to please its owner. I was completely fascinated. From that day, I was “employed” by my parents to do jobs and got paid. Things went like my father said: “You want that attractive doll? Save for it”. During that period, I not only harvested a house of coins, but also gained a new perspective towards budgeting. From those calculating work I did on my treasured savings, from those careful decisions I made on my hard-earned coins, and from those strong desires I retrained after my deep reflections, I finally found out that the process of saving money is really an intelligent one which can only be handled by a sensible and self-disciplined mind.
From above, I believe you must have got a general idea about budgeting. Now please allow me to introduce the last saying to you, that is: The underlying intention of finance is not to save, but to give. Maybe it’s a little difference from what you’ve learned. But wait, just hear me out. Everyone knows the miraculous person-Warren Buffet. With regard to him, what startled us is not only his big fortune, but also his amazing generosity. In July 2006, Buffet pledged to gradually give away 85% of his fortune to five foundations, which worth well over $40 billion. Two years later, the same kind of magnanimous act happened. Bill Gates retired and donated all of his wealth to Bill & Melinda Gates foundation, leaving not even a cent to his children. In fact, they’re just two typical examples in donation. There’re many others which are too numerous to mention. What on earth that transform the rich from famous fortune accumulators to generous money givers? Just as Buffett has said: “Those charitable foundations just spire us to think about giving money back to society.” As we all know, the gr eater abilities one has, the more responsibilities he bears. The truth applies to budgeting problems, too. Accordingly, we gain a new understanding of finance. It not only includes the idea of saving, but also giving. I believe that throughout dealing with financial problems, sticking to this principle and acting on it can make us a meaningful and respectable person.
That’s all. Thank you.。
