They have adopted basically centrist policy positions. Within the party in power, presidents cannot take for granted that their party's members of Congress will be loyal supporters of presidential programs. Party leaders in congress cannot expect straight partyline voting from members of their party.

Thomas Jefferson in the 1790s to resist the policies of George Washington’s administration. In Civil War, the democratic supported slavery and represented the interest of plantation owners. In the Great Depression, Roosevelt advocated New Deal ---to regulate and redistribute wealth and to protect those least able to help themselves in an increasingly complex society. The government expanded its role in welfare and economic regulation, thus wining overwhelming support from voters. The Democratic Party controlled government for over 20 years. Republican Reagan won the election and ended the New Deal.
