For teachers, this is great news. For many kids, it’s less welcome. Parents, meanwhile, are conflicted, caught between wanting their children to learn without distraction(分心)and worried about the loss of the constant and easy communication to which they’ve grown used.Smartphones undoubtedly hold back students’ attention to solving for x or close reading a Shakespearean poem. A 2023 study by Common Sense Media revealed that teens check their phones more than 100 times a day on average. On top of the hundreds of notifications lighting up screens and interrupting class lectures, teens now spend 4.8 hours on social media each day. The relationship between screen exposure(使用屏幕)and mental well-being remains unclear, but some studies suggest there is cause for concern.Yet many parents remain careful of banning phones during the school day. They are afraidthat doing so would cut communication between them and their children —not only when they want to organize pickups or drop-offs but also in the event of an emergency.Schools have managed to function without smartphones for centuries. For concerned parents, equipping their children with traditional cellphones, these days dubbed “dumbphones,” might be the best option; schools might consider whether selective (选择性的) phone bans that permit such devices could work. Or parents could get even more old-fashioned and simply call their school’s office when necessary. The next question for schools is how to ban cellphones. A popular option is requiring the use of magnetic (有磁性的) bags that lock in the morning and unlock when the final bell rings, or in the event of an emergency. When smartphone bans are done right, they can make a big difference. At Bethlehem Central High School near Albany, N.Y., for example, academic progress has improved since applying a ban last fall. Students are less distracted and more tuned into learning. Parents have even said they’re surprised at the success of the newly phone-free school.4.What does the underlined word “conflicted” in paragraph 1 mean?A.Not knowing what to do.B.Very happy with sth.C.Not good at some things.D.Worried about sth.5.What does paragraph 2 mainly talk about?A.How to learn Shakespeare’s plays and poems in school.B.Screen exposure does make people mentally unhealthy.C.Heavy usage of smartphones seriously affect students.D.Students in USA love phones more than ones in China.6.What schools can do for concerned parents?A.Ban the parents’ own smartphones.B.Selectively ban some students’ phones.C.Allow students carry dumbphones.D.Encourage them to shout outside window.7.Why is Bethlehem Central High School mentioned in the last paragraph?A.Students there are allowed to use smartphones.B.To show smartphone bans are beneficial.C.Parents there are less distracted and surprised.D.Just to praise the school’s achievements.Profits at Netflix have increased as the world’s largest streaming (在线播放) service added millions of subscribers (订户).The entertainment giant added 9.3 million new viewers in the latest quarter — more than expected by analysts on Wall Street — leaving it with a record 269.6 million worldwide."We’re off to a good start in 2024,” the company said. Its shares (股票) dropped 2% yesterday, however, after rising by almost a third since January.Profits at Netflix rose 15% to $9.4bn (£7.7bn) in the three months to 31 March. Net income (净收入) jumped 79% to $2.3bn over the same period.Netflix pioneered the streaming revolution. Hollywood’s established giants, from Disney to Warner Bros, are still struggling to catch up and turn a profit on their own competitor digital services.A growth in subscribers early in the pandemic paused in 2022 as limits were lifted. But shares in Netflix have increased over the past two years as it shored up growth by forbidding password-sharing and introducing a cheaper level of its service, with advertisements.Netflix has also broadened to live events, including coverage of World Wrestling Entertainment, and videogaming. In a letter to investors on Wednesday night, the company announced it would stop reporting how many members it has from next year.As it has regained momentum (发展势头) following its post-pandemic growth struggles, Netflix has been trying to direct Wall Street’s focus away from its subscriber growth numbers, arguing that other financial things including sales were more important.Forecasting sales growth of up to 15% this year, the company said to achieve “healthy” long-term growth it will need to “improve the variety and quality” of movies, shows and games on its platform; make it easier for users to find new series; and build its ad-funded level into a “more meaningful contributor” to its business.8.What do we know about Netflix?A.Its net income jumped 15% to $2. 3bn.B.It has 9. 3 million subscribers in the world.C.Its profits rose by $9. 4bn in the first quarter.D.It is the biggest streaming service worldwide.9.Why did the company say “We’re off to a good start in 2024”?A.It pioneered the great streaming change in the first 3 months.B.Its growth in subscribers paused after the limits were lifted.C.It gained more subscribers and more profits in the first quarter.D.Its shares dropped 2% yesterday after falling by almost a third.10.Why does the company plan to stop reporting how many subscribers it has?A.It has reported wrong numbers in the past years.B.It is addicted to videogaming and hurting its users.C.It lost so many users in the first 3 months worldwide.D.It wants to highlight its more important financial parts.11.What will Netflix do according to the last paragraph?A.It will improve the variety and quality of their products.B.It wants to make it easier to find more new profits.C.It has to make sales grow up to 15% during this quarter.D.It intends to achieve unhealthy long term growth.Good news for lazy gardeners: one labour-saving change could almost double the number of butterflies in your garden, according to a new scientific study — let the grass grow long. Now an analyses of six years of butterfly sightings across 600 British gardens has provided evidence that wilder lawns increase numbers. The benefits of leaving areas of grass long were most obvious in gardens within intensively (密集) farmed landscapes, with up to 93% more butterflies found and a greater range of species. Gardens with long grass in urban areas showed an 18% increase.“We wanted to be able to give tried and tested gardening advice that will benefit butterflies, as we know lots of people want to help,” said Dr Richard Fox, the head of science at Butterfly Conservation and a co-author of the study, published in the journal Science of the Total Environment.“This study proves, for the first time, that allowing a patch of grass to grow long will attractmore butterflies into your garden,” he said.According to the study, long grass in gardens attracts more butterfly species whose caterpillars feed on grasses. Fox said this suggested the lift in population was not simply because long grass provided more nectar (花蜜) from wildflowers within it, but because butterflies were seeking or actually breeding (繁殖) in rewilded lawns.Fox said: “What people are doing with long grass in gardens is creating potential or actual breeding habitat. In order to make an impact on the bio-diversity crisis we need to be creating places where butterflies and other wildlife can breed.”If you have a patch of long grass you may have grasshoppers, beetles and ant hills as well — there will be all these spin-offs (派生物).” He added.12.What do we know about the study?A.The researchers viewed 600 Americans gardens.B.Only more butterflies were found in the gardens.C.Dr. Richard Fox alone completed the research.D.It proves wilder lawns attracts more butterflies.13.Why do more butterfly species go to wilder fields?A.They can eat caterpillars on the long grass.B.Wild flowers create a beautiful environment.C.Butterflies will easily breed babies there.D.Wild grass can itself provide sweet nectar.14.Which is the most suitable title for the passage?A.Long grass brings more butterflies.B.Lazy gardeners have a good harvest.C.More sighting of butterflies in cities.D.A good labour-saving change in factory.15.What do Fox’s words mean in the last two paragraphs?A.If you are lazy, your vegetables will be eaten by insects.B.The effortless change helps solve the bio-diversity crisis.C.We should protect just butterflies instead of other wildlife.D.Ants and grasshoppers are less important than butterflies.KEEP IT SECURE (安全)All apps collect data as you use them. Following these four steps will help ensure you’re not oversharing,For starters, download apps only from the Apple App Store or Google Play Store, not from random (随机的) websites. 16Before you accept an app’s terms and conditions, look at what information it’s planning to collect. 17 For example, why would a gaming app need access to your text messages? Also, most apps don’t need to know your location, but for those that do, you can choose to enable location services only when using the particular app, another smart privacy safeguard.Sign up using an e-mail address you’ve set up just for things like app permissions and e-mail news-letters. 18 This way, if there is a security breach (漏洞), your exposure is controlled to things connected to an unimportant address.19 It means a long one (at least ten characters) with a mixture of letters, numbers, and special characters-and, sorry, a unique password for each app. According to security experts, a good trick is to create a memorable “passphrase” by creating a series of random words, and then substitute (以…替换) numbers or special characters (i.e., @ for a) for some of the letters. 20 Go ahead and write them down—just store your cheat sheet (备忘纸条) in a secure location (not your wallet or phone case!). Or enlist a password manager such as 1 Password or LastPass. A.Use a secure password.B.The websites are secure.C.These letters are very useful.D.Don’t use your main e-mail address.E.How will you ever remember them all?F.Think twice if it’s asking for too many permissions.G.These apps meet the major companies quality standards.二、完形填空Wait a Minute, Mr PostmanI wanted to repaint a graffiti (涂鸦)-tagged U.S. Postal Service mailbox. The final stamps will be about 3.7cm wide×3.5cm high.Things to consider● Your stamp design must be drawn on the official competition entry form which your teacher will give you.● Your design must be your own original work.● Drawings must be flat, so please don’t stick any materials or textures (纹理) to your design.● Please use lots of colour (no black and white images) in your design.● Please avoid using highlighter pens.Good LuckThe closing date for the competition is 28th May. Please ask your teacher, or parent, for one of the official entry forms. You’re then ready to start designing! In ancient Greece, Hippocrates called it “the most considerable of the diseases.”The fight against tuberculosis reached a turning point on March 24, 1882, in a small meeting room of the German Physiological Society at Berlin. A doctor named Robert Koch used more than 200 microscopic preparations to identify the bacterium that causes tuberculosis: tubercle bacillus. In 1872, Koch took up the post of district physician in what is today Wolsztyn, Poland. His patients, many of them farmers, were dying from anthrax, an illness that destroyed their cows.Koch set out to solve the anthrax riddle. First, Koch visited anthrax-stricken farms to observe the cows. He witnessed how a healthy animal would die in a matter of days as its blood turned black. People in close contact with sick cows and sheep also fell ill. Examining drops of black blood from dead cows under his microscope, Koch spotted structures shaped like thin grains of rice, which blood from healthy animals did not have. These germs were Bacillus anthracis. To see if the bacteria were the cause of the illness, Koch designed his own testing methods. First, he soaked (浸泡) a wood splinter (碎片) with a sick animal’s blood; then he made a small cut at the base of each mouse’s tail and inserted (插入) the splinter into their bodies. The next morning, the mice were dead. When Koch checked their bodies, he found the same microscopic structures in their blood. In 1880, Koch’s team perfected his plate technique (技术) for generating pure cultures of bacteria, which was crucial in identifying the cause of tuberculosis. In 1890, he announced he had found the cure for tuberculosis. He called the medicine tuberculin, a substance taken from tubercle bacilli. The news gave rise to enormous hope around the world, but tuberculin turned out to be a major disappointment. More than ineffective, it even contributed to the death of some patients. To this day, no completely effective vaccine for tuberculosis has been found, but tuberculin has become a crucial part of testing for the disease.4.Why does the author mention Hippocrates in paragraph 1?A.To introduce the spread of tuberculosis.B.To show the huge impact of tuberculosis.C.To explain the concept of tuberculosis.D.To describe the history of tuberculosis.5.What did the turning point suggest?A.People found a cure for anthrax.B.Fewer people died from tuberculosis.C.Tuberculosis-causing bacteria were recognized.D.Anthrax stopped spreading beyond animals.6.How did Koch identify the cause of anthrax?A.He fed a mouse with a dead cow’s food.B.He inserted a wood splinter into a cow’s tail.C.He infected healthy mice with a sick animal’s blood.D.He examined a dead person’s blood under his microscope.7.What can we learn about the medicine Koch invented?A.It has cured many people.B.It was taken from healthy people.C.It was an effective tuberculosis vaccine.D.It has been used in testing for tuberculosis.Turning 18 is a big deal when you are a teenager. It means you are responsible for yourself and don’t need your parents’ permission any more. However, there are lots of opinions about when one becomes an adult. Some are based on science, while others are personal opinions. While currently the age is 18, science supports 25 as a more sensible agefor adulthood, and I agree. While studying the brain of teenagers, scientists have learned that when kids are around l8, their prefrontal cortex (前额皮层) is only halfway developed. The prefrontal-cortex helps people set and achieve goals by receiving signals from different regions of the brain to process information and adapting accordingly. That halfway development means that you still have things to learn and your brains still have time to develop until the age of 25.Some people think going off to college and living on your own qualify (使……具有资格) san adult, while others may believe having a steady income and being able to afford to live on your own are what make you an adult. Not everyone has a fortunate life where they have family that can provide support; there are situations where you are forced to become an “adult” whether you like it or not.In the foster care (寄养) system, once a child turns 18, he or she is considered an adult and can no longer receive state-sponsored support. These children are forced into a life where they have no family or anyone to support them other than those who were there for them in the system.Having a quality job will allow you to supply yourself with necessary things to live and help you become a more mature and responsible person. Also, going through difficult times and realizing life isn’t as easy as it seems, should qualify someone as an adult.8.What is the author’s attitude toward considering 25 as an age for adulthood?A.Cautious.B.Uncaring.C.Doubtful.D.Positive. 9.How does the prefrontal cortex work to help people set and achieve goals?A.By dealing with received signals and responding accordingly.B.By collecting information from other parts of the body.C.By sending instructions to different regions of the brainD.By transporting sensed emotions and making records10.What does the author intend to do in paragraph 3?A.Give a definition of adulthood.B.Stress the importance of family support.C.Prove not everyone lives a fortunate life.D.Show opinion on becoming an adult is divided11.What is one standard qualifying you as an adult according to the author?A.Setting up a family.B.Being responsible for your study.C.Accepting and learning from the low moments in life.D.Buying yourself quality things to live.Teenagers across the world eagerly await the day they become legal adults, to be free from the dependence of their parents and to practice the full rights of their citizenship. The situation is no different in South Korea. Here, the legal age of adulthood is 19. Ten years ago, the legal age was 20, but this was lowered by a year in 2013 based on recognition of the early maturity of modern teenagers. Now, from their 19th birthday onwards, South Korean teenagers can vote, get married and work full-time.Unlike most other countries, the South Korean government celebrates this transformation into adulthood with an official “Coming-of-Age Day”, which falls on every third Monday of May. Its first written record of celebrating adulthood dates back to the Goryeo Dynasty, where King Gwangjong gifted Prince Wang Juan outfit (服装) reserved for male adults in 965.By the late Jose on Dynasty, the ceremony marking adulthood developed into a full-grown event for the middle and upper classes, celebrated by their 15-year-olds. In this period, one of the most symbolic changes that adults-to-be went through was that boys would tie their long flowing (飘逸的) hair into a topknot (结) and cover it with at all black hat made of horsehair; likewise, girls put their hair, which they let fall as single braids (辫子) in youth, up into an eat knot and set it with a long hairpin (发簪).Today, the traditional coming-of-age ceremonies still live on, supported largely by government and public interests. But a set of very different customs has also been added. Unless they apply to participate in publicly-held ceremonies or attend schools that provide these series, 19-year-olds celebrate the third Monday of May the modem way, by having a nice meal with family or drinking with their friends.12.What led to the legal age of adulthood being lowered by a year in South Korea?A.The requirement for youth’s earlier practice of voting rights.B.The determination to satisfy teenagers’ expectations.C.The plan to reduce economic pressure on families.D.The realization of youth’s earlier maturity.13.Who received South Korea’s first recorded coming-of-age celebration according to thetext?A.Frince Wang Ju.B.King Gwangjong.C.An upper-class 15-year-old in the Jose on Dynasty.D.A middle-class 15-year-old in the Goryeo Dynasty.14.What marked the important change in celebrating adulthood during the Jose on Dynasty?A.A new type of hairstyle B.A specific birthday outfit.C.Making one’s own hat with horsehair.D.Replacing short hairpins with long ones. 15.What does the last paragraph suggest?A.Publicly-held ceremonies require group application.B.Traditional ceremonies should be more widely practiced.C.Teenagers nowadays prefer to celebrate adulthood at home.D.Society has seen broadening ways of adulthood celebration.Being “a grown-up” is a pretty unclear concept, even once you’re technically “grown-up”. My parents tried really hard to recreate the season for my sisters and me here in America. On New Year's day, my family, including all my uncles, aunts, and cousins, dressed in new clothes, gathered at my grandma's house. Kids were pulled out of school, and adults took the day off. The celebration lasted throughout the day and late into the night, with one tradition following another.Fast-forward to 2019: My grandma has passed away, the adults are elderly, and the kids havegrown up and are living their own life. The Lunar New Year celebration is no longer elaborate as it used to be. As we melt into American culture, the "olden ways", as we call them, have fallen away. Life seems to have got busier and much more complex, but I often feel something is missing. For us first-generation kids, it is often easier to let go of the traditions and customs of our parents'. They don't mean as much to us as they do for them. At the same time, they are still a part of our culture. I realized that the diaspora (流散) of young Asian American in the United Sates is not unique to me. It is an ongoing inner struggle that we all wrestle with. My Asian features and skin color do not entirely define who I am. I am as much a “hamburger” guy as a “rice” individual. I can't quite fully claim that I am an American and not fully Asian, there isn't really a check box that I can mark. I am Chinese-Vietnamese-Asian-American.I now have two little boys. It saddens me to think they will never be able to experience what my sisters and I did as little kids during this holiday. Recently, for the first time, I've hung up Lunar New Year decorations around the house and replaced our Christmas wreath (花环) on the front door with decorative firecrackers. In a way, my sons are forcing me to slow down and explore my heritage.4.What do we know about the author's family in Paragraph 1A.They lived a very hard life in America.B.They respected the old and loved the young.C.They stuck to the traditions of Lunar New Year.D.They paid little attention to children's education.5.What dose the underlined word "elaborate" in Paragraph 2 meanA.carefully prepared and organizedB.extremely simple and easyC.unbelievable and ridiculousD.humorous and appealing6.Why does the author mention "hamburger" and "rice" in Paragraph 3A.To suggest various choices.B.To indicate diverse identities.C.To clarify different customs.D.To compare personal tastes.7.What message does the author seem to convey in the textA.We should strengthen family bonds.B.We are what we choose to be.C.Passing down family traditions matters.D.Knowing yourself is a lifelong process. After taking a few steps back, Hadj Benhalima rushed toward the building, pushed himself upward with his foot against the wall and stretched out his arm. At the peak of his jump, he flipped off a light switch, and the bright lights of a nearby barbershop went off immediately. This is what Hadj and his friends have been doing for the past two years: swinging around Paris and switching off wasteful shop signs at night, in an effort to fight against light pollution and save energy. And they are all enthusiastic about Parkour—a sport that consists of running and jumping over urban obstacles. While climbing other people's property to turn off their lights may strike some as a form of trespassing (非法入侵) , the Parkour athletes insist their activities are only about enforcing seldom-respected rules.More than a decade ago, Paris City Hall issued orders requiring stores to turn off all signs and window displays from I am to 6 am, but they are widely ignored with little consequence. "for 10 years there has been no follow-up, no control, no punishment, "said Anne-Marie Ducroux, thehead of the National Association for the Protection of the Sky and the Night Environment. That is why Hadj and his friends have taken matters into their own hands. The group often gathers in the so-called Golden Triangle neighborhood, in western Paris, which is the center of French luxury.Enforcing the orders in place of the authorities certainly enters a legal grey area. But the Parkour athletes say all the police officers they have met during their rounds have allowed their action—as long as it causes no damage. And it seems that their efforts have produced the desired result, because Hadj says he has noticed that in recent months, several shops have stopped leaving their lights on after his group targeted them. He hopes others will follow suit. "At least, I'll sleep better, "he said.8.What are Hadj Benhalima and his friends trying to do at nightA.To practice their Parkour skills.B.To remove possible urban obstacles.C.To turn off unnecessary store lights.D.To ensure the safety of their neighborhood.9.What can we learn about the rules set by the governmentA.They are too strict to follow.B.They have achieved the desired effect.C.They put great pressure on stores.D.They are not carried out effectively.10.What is the government's attitude towards the Parkour athletes' actA.Worried.B.SupportiveC.Doubtful.D.Unconcerned.11.What does the text mainly talk aboutA.Why Parkour is so popular among young people in Paris.B.Why it is difficult to fight against light pollution in Paris.C.How the lighting of shop signs affects the night view of Paris.D.How young people in Paris help save energy through Parkour.Next time you are struggling with the crossword, try putting the kettle on. Drinking a cup of tea can improve creativity, a study suggests.Researchers gave men and women either tea or water and then asked them to complete a word association game, which was used to measure a form of creativity known as convergent thinking (聚合思维).In the game, the participants were given sets of words such as “same, tennis, head” and asked to find a meaningful link between them. The answer, in this case, would be “match ”. After analysing the results in a way that ruled out the potential effects of a person’s intelligence and language ability, the researchers, from Peking University in China, found that those who drank the tea performed significantly better in the word association game. The tea drinkers scored an average of 13. 89 in the word association game compared with 12. 94 for water drinkers. The researchers said it was not clear why tea has this beneficial effect. Tea contains caffeine and theanine, which can improve attention, but the 100 participants in the study drank only a small amount of tea—90ml, on average—and caried out the tests very soon after consuming it, meaning any effect would have been ignored. “This result showed that the tea drinking event itself—rather than the biological com-ponents of tea—played a positive role,” the researchers said.“Previous research has found that people tend to associate tea drinking with a specific set of personality traits, such as smart, creative, elegant, confident, and stable. It may be that when participants are stimulated (刺激) by tea, the mental representation of a tea drinker is also activated, and they unconsciously think that they should be smarter and more creative,” they added, “Future research should focus on specific mechanisms (机制) and clarify which variables moderate the impact of tea consumption on convergent thinking.12.What did the participants have to do in the studyA.Pair the words with each other.B.Guess the meaning of the words.C.Find a connection between the words.D.Tell the differences among the words.13.What helped a participant get a higher score according to the researchersA.The action of drinking tea itself.B.The participant’s intelligence.C.The participant’s language ability.D.The biological components of tea.14.What can be inferred from the previous researchA.Drinking tea makes people more active.B.Drinking tea is popular among the youth.C.People tend to drink tea more than before.D.People drinking tea are often thought smart.15.Which of the following can be the best title of the textA.Drinking Tea Is Good for Health.B.Drinking Tea Is A Popular Trend.C.Drinking Tea Makes for Creativity.D.Drinking Tea Matters A Lot in Life.二、七选五16.How to Politely Cancel Plans Over TextYou made plans with friends, but when it's time to leave the house, you just don't have the energy.
