Part I Reading Comprehension (40 %)Directions: There are four passages in this part. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. You should decide on the best choice and blacken the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet.Passage OneAlmost two years ago, I stood on a balcony, joined hands with my three most intimate friends and listened to one of them tell a story about four girls with different backgrounds and talents who left home and went to college at a mythical place called Happy Valley. After we left our friend's apartment that last night of our freshman year, we ended up on the lawn, playing frisbee at 3 a.m. and sitting on the dormitory steps talking for hours.Alisa, Karen, Gabrielle and I had spent that day together just being freshmen ---- going to the sandwich shop for the last lunch of the semester, trying on each other's clothes, watching movies and acting like we would never see each other again. Three Months is a Long TimeFor freshmen, and especially for us, saying goodbye at the end of the firstyear can feel like saying goodbye forever.Three months can seem like a long time when you are leaving friends and acquaintances whom you have only known for a year. Your freshman year moments are irreplaceable. My advice to any freshmen reading this is to cherish those moments. You may grow completely apart from the people you spent your first year with, or you may find yourself fortunately comparing them to siblings at the end of your junior year as I did.Even if you have almost forgotten your freshman year roommates two years later, and barely recognize them when you encounter them in front of the gymnasium, you can never replace that year and the brand-new feeling that your first year of college brings.A lot will change after your freshman year. You will meet new people and do new things. You will do a lot more growing up. At the beginning of our senior year, Karen took her hometown boyfriend Kevin on a tour of campus and downtown. "That's where we grew up," she told him, motioning toward Atherton Hall, where the four of us spent our first two years at Penn State. We learned more outside the classroom than we learned inside it. That dorm is where we learned and discussed the lessons of our freshman and sophomore years. I think the principal lesson I learned was the definition of true friendship. And I have never had nor will ever have better teachers than Alisa, Karen and Gabrielle. That lesson can best be summarized by something Alisa and Karen told me when I was upset at the end of last semester and needed a shoulder to cry on. They said no matter how far we drift apart or who else we become friends with after college, we will always incline to recall each other first whenever we think of college.I couldn't agree more. The story Alisa told on that balcony is far from over. I sometimes wonder if the following is how it will end:"…and those four little girls grew up and realized their dreams. They found themselves all over the country, from farms, to cities, to the suburbs, doing everything they wanted to do - a computer technician, a physician, an attorney, and an architect ---with the companions they wanted in husbands, children and pets. And occasionally they would make it back to reunions at that mythical valley and see their old friends, laughing about the good times. They had succeeded in forgetting any of the bad times. And they lived happily ever after."1. In what year of college is the author at the time of the article?A)Freshman.B)SophomoreC)JuniorD)Senior2. What did the four girls NOT do together the last day of their freshman year?A) Eat lunch.B) Take a tour around the campus.C) Try on clothing.D) Watch movies.3. What is the author’s view of college freshmen?A) They are very mature.B) They are very immature.C) They are very confusedD) They are changing and growing.4. What kinds of careers did the author hope her classmates would have?A) Exciting and entertaining careers.B) Careers that can make them rich.C) Careers that require education.D) Careers with spare time for other activities.5. Which of the following will the girls probably remember best?A) The bad times.B) The good times.C) The final examinations.D) All the above.Passage twoKelley never had any intentions of taking Distance Education courses. She had already obtained a certificate at a business school. She was married, had children and worked as a legal assistant. But her life changed forever when she broke her neck and became paralyzed at the age of 27.Over time, Kelley has learned to move her fingers enough to use a computer and to get around daily with the help of a wheelchair. Although that progress is not enough to allow her to continue her previous career, other opportunities haveopened up for her. Kelley said, “The accident changed my outlook on life, and I immediately looked to education since I had no degree.”Most traditional programs did not allow her to balance her education with a growing family. Then, Kelley found Penn State Distance Education.“Distance Education is hard work, but my children make it all worthwhile. Iwill be an educated person, setting a good example for my children and helping them in their future efforts. She said,“Distance Education affords me an opportunity to pursue my own goals and personal work.” Jane Ireland, academic advisor for Distance Education said, “Kelley reminds us of the mission we have in Distance Education—to bring a quality education and experience to students regardless of their geographic location or life circumstances.”6.Kelley didn’t think of taking Distance Education courses because _________.A.taking Distance Education courses was a lot of workB.she was satisfied with her previous educationC.there was nothing she particularly wanted to learnD.she had a suitable education for her previous career7.Kelle y’s life was changed so much by the accident that she __________.A.needed to constant help in daily lifeB.couldn’t live without her doctor’s helpC.needed to use a wheelchairD.had to hire a person to take care of her8. Without a well-balanced life a person can neither function properly nor develop into a well-rounded individual. Without some sort of balance in life people tend to be unfulfilled unhappy.I’ve experienced great stress in my study and work. And I’ve tried every means to adjust myself and relieve my stress. Finally I found a way out in my leisure time. Leisure time is very important and necessary for me. Without it I am sure I would go insane. I spend most of my extra time reading, listening to music, talking to my real life friends, or talking on the Internet with people I meet. I really enjoy going out into a quiet place and reading poetry or books by Walt Whitman and Robert Frost. If I did not make time for all of this I would not be able to handle everything else in life. Along with reading to relax, listening tomusic is very important to me. If I feel sad, I listen to slow songs, while if I am happy I like listening to fast songs. Music is the universal language and it can express different feelings. It can relate to the soul, or in fact I think it is the soul of feelings. My real life friends and my Internet friends are also part of my leisure and social time. Friends have always been important to me. They are the backbone in everything I do. The good friends that I have are always there for me in every situation I am in. Without them I would not have led a healthy, balanced life. Not so long ago I went through a short time of depression. I fell behind in all my work and stopped talking to my friends. After a week of acting this way, one of my good friends pulled me aside and invited me to go for a walk with her. We talked about what was going on in my life and she helped me to figure out what I wanted to do.I do not know what would have happened if she had not been there. Many things add to having a well-balanced life. Stress can be a very dangerous and tiresome experience. It can lead to depression and unhappiness. But when it happens, you can do something other than wait, like talking to your friends or listening to music. Then you may mot think you should have been so stressed and depressed.A well-balanced life is important to maintain. Without some sort of balance it is hard to get by in everyday life. And the creative use of leisure time plays a vital role.11. What does the author mainly tell us in the passage?A. Well-balanced life is not easy to have in today’s world.B. Leisure time plays a vital role in maintaining a well-balanced life.C. Satisfying work is crucial to having a well-balanced life.D. She has experienced great stress in her study and work.12. What does the author mean by saying “Finally I found a way out in my leisure time”?A. She found leisure time could help relieve her stress and maintain a well-balanced life.B. She found a way to enjoy herself in her leisure time.C. She got to know how to spend her leisure time.D. She came to understand what “a well-balanced life” means.13. When does the author listen to slow music?A. When she is s adB. When she is lonely.C. When she is happy..D. When she is trying to work.14. How important are good friends to the author?A. They usually help her lift the physical burden with their strong backbone.B. They support her in everything she does and help her in every situation she isin.C. They often pull her aside and invite her to go or a walk.D. They will do everything that she wants them to do.15. What main suggestion does the author give us in the passage on how to relievestress?A. Pursuing some leisure acti vities.B. Listening to music.C. Reading poetry.D. Talking to friendsPassage fourMost Americans would find it hard to think what life would look like without a car. However, some have become aware of the serious problems of air pollution caused by the car. The polluted air becomes poisonous and dangerous to health. One way to get rid of the polluted air is to build a car that does not pollute. That’s what several of the large factories have been trying to do. But to build a clean car is easier said than done. Progress in this field has been slow. Another way is replace the current gasoline consuming car engine with another kind of engine. Now inventors are working on steam cars as well as electric cars. Many makers believe that it will take years to develop a useful model that pleases men.To prevent the world from being further polluted by cars, we have to make some changes to the way many of us live. Americans for example, have to reduce the total number of their cars. They are encouraged to travel and go to work by bicycle. It is thought that such practice will help man to keep the air clean. But this change will not come about easily. A large number of workers might find themselves without jobs if a car factory closed. Thus the problem of air pollution。

It offers numerous physical, mental, and social benefits that contribute to an overall sense of well-being. In this essay, we will explore the importance of regular exercise and its positive impact on our lives.Firstly, regular exercise plays a vital role in improving our physical health. Engaging in physical activities such as running, swimming, or cycling helps to strengthen our muscles and bones. It also enhances cardiovascular fitness, leading to a reduced risk of heart diseases and other chronic conditions. Furthermore, exercise promotes weight management and helps to prevent obesity, a growing problem in modern society. In addition to physical health, exercise greatly contributes to our mental well-being. Engaging in exercise releases endorphins, often referred to as the "feel-good" hormones, which elevate our mood and reduce stress and anxiety. Regular exercise can also alleviate symptoms of depression and improve overall cognitive function. It provides an opportunity for self-reflection and relaxation, acting as a positive outlet for coping with life's challenges.Furthermore, exercise offers a platform for social interaction, which is crucial for our overall well-being. Participating in group activities, such as team sports or fitness classes, allows us to connect with others who share similar interests. These social interactions foster a sense of belonging and camaraderie, reducing feelings of loneliness and isolation. Moreover, exercise can serve as a bonding activity among friends, family members, or colleagues, leading to stronger relationships and increased social support. To conclude, regular exercise is essential for a healthy and fulfilling life. It not only improves physical health and fitness but also enhances mental well-being and fosters social connections. Incorporating exercise into our daily routines should be a priority for everyone, regardless of age or fitness level. So, let's make a commitment to prioritize our health and embrace regular exercise for a happier and healthier future.。

有的儿子,但却从不向他寻求帮助。

Part VII Writing
