We've got major cities right on the coast like Houston and Corpus Christi. Houston is actually the fourth biggest city in the whole USA! It's got awesome museums, pro sports teams, the NASA Space Center, and the best Tex-Mex food around. Yum!Then you've got all the smaller beach towns along the coast that are perfect for vacations. Places like Galveston Island, South Padre Island, and Port Aransas. You can swim, surf, fish, build sandcastles, and have lots of fun in the sun. Just gotta watch out for those hurricanes that can spin up in the Gulf. They can get super strong and scary.But you know what's even cooler than the coast? The Wild Wild West part of Texas! That's where the cowboys roam and you'll find real live rodeos happening. Ever seen a bullrider try to last 8 seconds on an angry bull? It's insane! Or how about watching some whip-fast roping competitions? Those cowboys are crazy talented.Out in West Texas is where you'll see the landscape that most people think of for Texas. Dallas is all about big business, skyscrapers, and championships sports teams. While Austin is this funky little city that's the "Live Music Capital of the World." Supposed to be great for eating, concerts, and outdoor activities. My parents are always saying we should visit Austin one day. I'm more interested in Dallas since that's where the Cowboys football team plays!Oh, and how could I forget about the State Fair of Texas that happens every fall in Dallas? Definitely the wackiest and most Texan thing ever. They have all these fun rides and games. But the best part is the crazy fried foods. Things like fried butter, fried Oreos, fried mashed potato balls, and fried corn dogs the size of your arm! My friends and I dream about going to the State Fair when we're older.This is already getting kinda long so I should probably start wrapping it up. But I can't finish without mentioning a few more quintessentially Texan things. Like Friday night high school football games which are practically a religion around here. The landscape is really varied - we've got wide open prairies, rolling hills, forests, deserts, and even beaches along the Gulf Coast. The state flower is the bluebonnet and the state tree is the pecan tree. Our state bird is the super cool mockingbird.One amazing thing about Texas is just how enormous it is! It's the second largest state after Alaska. You could fit lots of other states inside its borders. From the northeast corner near Arkansas all the way down to the Rio Grande river on the Mexican border is about 800 miles! And from east to west it stretches almost 900 miles. That's one humongous state!Because Texas is so big, we've got tons of great cities too. The largest is Houston, which has over 2 million people living there. It's home to the NASA rocket scientists and mission control for the space program. Then there's Dallas, a busy modern city known for its tall skyscrapers and sports teams like the Cowboys. Steaks are enormous and cooked over smoky wood fires until they're juicy and delicious. We've also got the best Tex-Mex and Mexican food with items like fajitas, enchiladas, tacos, and more. Everything is smothered in cheesy queso and fresh salsas. For dessert, you've got to try a giant slice of gooey pecan pie. And no meal is complete without an ice cold glass of sweet tea to wash it all down!There's just so much more I could say about this great place. We've got awesome attractions like the Alamo and the Johnson Space Center in Houston. The scenery is beautiful, with placeslike Big Bend National Park, the Hill Country, and Padre Island beach. Now it's a sacred monument that every Texan child learns about.But Texas isn't just about the past. These days it's a booming place with huge cities, amazing sports teams, incredibly nice people, and some of the best food you'll find anywhere. The capital of Texas is Austin, which is one of the fastest growing big cities in America. Austin is known for its live music scene, incredible barbecue and Tex-Mex food, and a fun downtown area right on the river.My personal favorite city though is Houston, which is where I'm from. Houston has NASA's mission control center where they control all the space rockets and shuttle launches. We have a really coolSpace Center you can tour. But my favorite thing about Houston is the professional sports teams. I'm a huge Houston Astros baseball fan - we won the World Series a few years ago! And I also love the Houston Rockets basketball team and Houston Texans football team. Up in the Panhandle region, it's flat ranch land for days. But then you've got mountains and deserts in West Texas near places like El Paso. Down along the coast near Houston and Corpus Christi, it's humid with marshes. And in Central Texas is this awesome hill country area with rolling hills and rivers - that's where Austin is.We've got some great parks too. Big Bend National Park is way out in West Texas on the Mexican border and has epic hiking and camping. There's also the Guadalupe Mountains in that area which are the highest peaks in Texas. Up north near Dallas is the Caddo Lake area which has cool cypress trees growing right out of the water - it looks like something out of a monster movie! And we can't forget the Alamo in San Antonio where Texans fought for independence from Mexico many years ago.One thing I love about Texas is watching our awesome pro sports teams. We've got two NFL football teams - the Dallas Cowboys and the Houston Texans. Even though the Cowboys are more popular, I like the Texans better. We've also got two MLB baseball teams with the Texas Rangers and the Houston Astroswho just won the World Series a couple years back. Basketball is huge here too with the San Antonio Spurs and the Houston Rockets. And a bunch of our college football teams like the Texas Longhorns and the Texas A&M Aggies are always ranked at the top. Sports are a really big deal in Texas!The weather in Texas is intense, I'll warn you about that. Summers are crazy hot - we're talking over 100 degrees Fahrenheit most days! Everyone uses a ton of air conditioning to stay cool those months. Winters can get pretty cold too, especially in the northern panhandle areas. But the worst is hurricane season between June and November when major storms can hit cities along the Gulf Coast like Houston or Galveston. Tornadoes can also pop up in the spring around areas like Dallas. The weather can get wild!That's just a small taste of all the awesome stuff we've got going on in Texas. It's a massive state packed full of great cities, yummy food, cool nature, and fun things to do. We Texans are very proud of our state - some might even say we're a bit boastful about it! The state is so ginormous that it would take over 12 hours to drive across it from one side to the other! That's like driving all the way from Houston to Chicago. Up in the Panhandle area, it's flat as a pancake with tons of farms, ranches, and wind turbines spinning around. Sometimes we even get tornadoes that look like terrifying dragon tails spinning across the plains. But my favorite is when gentle snow falls and turns our whole neighborhood into a pretty white wonderland (which doesn't happen too often since Texas doesn't get super cold). I love the wild mix of warm and cold, wet and dry, sunny and stormy that we experience here. It keeps life exciting!Texas is also famous for lots of different cultural things that make it unique. We have our own special Texas lingo and sayings here, like "fixin' to," "y'all," and "bless your heart." For music, we're the kings and queens of country, with legends like Willie Nelson, George Strait, and Miranda Lambert calling Texas home.
