What will the kids say?“Terrible,” said Greg Dudzinski, 17, of Ripon High School in Wisconsin, as he toured the US capital.“The regular hamburgers are bad enough, so soyaburgers would be a lot worse, offered Zach Richey, 13, of Scottsboro Junior High in Alabama, another tourist. But the United States government –hoping to reduce the amount of fat that children are eating –has approved the use of soy as a meat substitute in meals for schools and day-care centers. Not all kids dislike the change. Mariel Spano, 17, of sandy Greek High School in New York, also visiting the capital, said she likes soyaburgers:“There is less fat, and they are better for you… They taste the same, and they are just as good.”The government tried to make soy a meat substitute nearly 20 years ago, but later dropped the idea.At the time, the plan was intended as a cost-cutting move. US Agriculture Department officials say that their purpose now is only to make meals healthier.Schools are likely to increase the amount of soy that is mixed with hamburgers and other foods already on their menus, and they will also be looking for food companies to develop new soy products that children will like. “I can’t see putting tofu on a student’s plate and having a good acceptance. I can see taking a product that is familiar to the students and adding a large amount of soy to it and having it to be acceptable,” said Jill Benza, director of food services for the Mesa, Arizona schools.36.What is the newspaper report mainly about?A.The difficulty in using soy products for US schools.B.Various opinions on soy products for US schools.C.The plan that is made by the US government for school lunch.D.Healthy foods for students in US schools.37.Where did the interviews most probably take place?A.In food companies. But soon, the importance of English idioms was shown in an amusing experience. One day, I happened to meet an Englishman on the road, and soon we began to talk. As I was talking about how I was studying English, the foreigner seemed to be astonished gently shaking his head, shrugging his shoulders, saying, “You don’t say!”“You don’t say!” I was puzzled. The cut can then be carefully inspected. If it has bled freely any germs will normally have been washed away by the blood.Apply a plaster dressing firmly, bringing the edges of the cut together so that it knits quickly. Keep dry for 1 to 2 days.If the cut is deep and the edges cannot be pulled together with a dressing consult the doctor or the practice nurse. A tetanus (破伤风) injection may be needed.GrazesDirt will often enter a graze caused by falling on a hard or rough surface. It must be cleaned out carefully with an antiseptic solution. (消毒液)After cleaning, leave the graze uncovered. Exposure to the air will cause a scab to form. This will gradually fry and fall off.It is not a good idea to apply a dressing. This may stick to the graze or make it complete wet and infected.BruisesBruises are very common in children. They normally get better in 7 to 10 days Parents sometimes worry that a bone may be broken, but if in doubt consult the doctor. This is somewhat a different order way from that in Europe.Until about the middle of the nineteenth century, Americans didn’t have to worry about whether the salad came before or after the main course since they didn’t eat salad at all. Chomping(大声地咀嚼) on greens was once considered sissy(女人气的), and Americans preferred to get their greens indirectly, after they had been processed by rabbits or deer. The shift of public taste toward the salad may be attributed to New York’s Delmonico brothers, who originally introduced smorgasbord from Europe, and served it in their restaurant. Such novelties(新奇的东西) became so popular that by the end of the nineteenth century, the Waldorf salad has swept the country.Europeans still chomp on greens after the main course, as a way of clearing the palate(味觉), and being ready for the cheese. Why Americans eat their salad first is uncertain. The following joking suggestions might make sense: The custom may be related to the slimming craze, for “salad first” may fill you up without any worry about fattening; to avoid customers’ impatience with waiting, the restaurant serves salad first to keep them busy while the main courses are being prepared; eating raw food while one is waiting for the cooked food may be a way of announcing that one is not wasting time, which is seen as a virtue; probably unfair to the restaurant, this custom has been encouraged by the merchant as trick-the meagerness(不足量) of a meal is less noticeable if it comes after “free” salad-after all, rabbit food is much cheaper than the rabbit.48. Before the middle of the nineteenth century, _________ .A. Americans ate the salad before the main courseB. Americans ate the salad after the main courseC. Americans ate the salad either before or after the main courseD. Americans didn’t eat salad at al l49. In less than fifty years, salad became popular throughout the United States.D. Serving Salad before the entree by the restaurants is a way of cheating the diners.四.任务型阅读(10分)A listener has written from China for advice about how to lose weight. Michael in Shanghai says he is 26 and has battled obesity for most of his life.Obesity , a severe weight problem, is a complex condition. A doctor may advise taking medicine along with changing one’s behaviors. Experts say that the most successful weight—loss plans include a well-balanced diet andexercise.People who want to avoid weight gain have to balance the number of calories they eat with the number of calories they use. To lose weight, you can reduce the number of calories you take in, increase the number you use, or both.A recent study looked at four of the most popular dieting plans in the US. Researchers at Stanford University in California studied over 300 overweight women, mostly in their thirties and forties. Each woman went on one of the four plans: Atkins, The Zone, Ornish or LEARN. The women attended diet classes and received written information about the food plans. At the end of the year, the women on the Atkins diet had lost the most, more than four and one-half kilograms on average. They also did better on tests for cholesterol levels and blood pressure.Christopher Gardner, who led the study, says the Atkins diet may be more successful because of its simple message to eat less sugar. He also says that the advice to increase protein in the diet leads to more satisfying meals. He says that there was not enough money to study men, but that men would probably have similar results.Last week, another report based on thirty-one studies suggested that only a small minority of people have long-term success with dieting. Most dieters regained their lost weight within five years and often they become more overweight. But those who kept the weight off generally were the ones who exercised.五.书面表达(25分)假如你是李华,你的英国朋友Tom想了解上海世博会的一些情况。

And yet when you travel from one country to another, you will find that people have quite different feelings about food. People often feel that what they eat is normal (正常) and that what other people eat is strange or silly. In most parts of Asia, for example, no meal is complete without rice. In England, people eat potatoes every day. In the Middle East, bread is the main part of every meal. Eating like so many things we do, becomes a habit which is difficult to change. Americans like to drink a lot of orange juice and coffee. The English drink tea four or five times every day. Australians drink a great deal of beer, and the French drink wine every day.The sort of meat people like to eat also differs from one country to another. Horse meat is thought to be delicious in France. In Hong Kong, some people enjoy eating snakes. New Zealanders eat sheep, but they never eat goat meat. The Japanese don't like to eat sheep meat because of its smell, but they enjoy eating raw fish (生鱼).So it seems that although eating is a topic we can talk about for hours, there is very little common sense in what we say it. People everywhere enjoy eating what they have always eaten, and there is very little we can do to change our eating habits.21. Which of the following is true according to the article?A. All people have the same feeling about food.B. In most parts of Asia, people usually have rice for meals.C. People often consider other people to be strange or silly.D. The topic people spend time talking about is bread and meat.22. People in different countries ___ .A. drink the same sort of wineB. have the same eating habitC. eat different kinds of meatD. have the same tea at different time within a day23. The Japanese don't like to eat sheep meat __ .A. because they dislike its smellB. because it is too expensiveC. because it is easy to go badD. because they think it will do harm to their health24. English people drink tea four or five times a day _ .A. because they get thirsty easilyB. because there is plenty of tea in BritainC. because of their drinking habitD. because they have enough time to do soBThe fact that blind people can see things using other parts of their bodies apart from their eyes may help us to understand our feelings about color. If they can sense color differences, then perhaps we, too, are affected (影响) by color without knowing it. Salesmen have discovered by experience over a long period of time that sugar sells badly in green wrappings (包装), that blue foods are considered not agreeable to the taste ,and that cosmetics (化妆品) should never be packed in brown. These discoveries have grown into a whole subject of color psychology (心理学).Some of our preferences (偏爱) are clearly psychological. Dark blue is the color of the night sky and therefore connected with calm, while yellow is a day color connected with energy and encouragement. Experiments have shown that colors, partly because they are connected with psychology, also have a direct effect on people’s mind. People in bright red surroundings (环境) show an increase in breathing speed, heartbeat and blood pressure. Red is exciting. Pure blue has exactly the opposite effect; it is a calming color. Being exciting, red was chosen as the signal for danger, but a closer study shows that a bright yellow can produce a more basic state of alarm, so fire engines in some advanced areas are now rushing around in bright yellow colors that stop buses, trucks and cars.25. The passage tells us that salesmen have _______.A. found out that colors affect salesB. discovered the relationship between color and psychologyC. tried colors on blind peopleD. developed a special subject of color psychology26. If people are exposed to pure blue, _______.A. their body pressure risesB. they won’t easily feel nervousC. they want to taste blue foodsD. they will feel like buying things27. Which of the following do you think is the best title of the passage?A. Color and FeelingsB. Colors and SalesC. The Blind and ColorsD. My own dream to see it came true last January when I joined the sixth exploration crew(考查队) of the China National Marine Bureau. We spent 10 days connecting flights to reachour goal, but finally arrived at the Great Wall Station on Antarctica on the eve of Chinese New Year. There are only two seasons in Antarctica: winter and summer. You get polar nights in winter and polar days in summer. Day is longer than night in summer, and the temperature often reaches below zero. Luckily, there are no snowstorms in summer, which makes it the best season to travel. What I imagined before starting for Antarctica was a world of ice, storms, endless cold and loneliness. When I stopped on Antarctica for the first time, however, I saw rich, energetic and beautiful scenery that was beyond anything I had imagined. We only spent 11 days at the South Pole, but every minute was spent taking pictures and losing our heart to the wonderland. Beauty enveloped us as we watched the world around us. The mountains, oceans, ice, snow, sky, earth and people all seemed to have their own stories.Rocks from Antarctica are considered valuable. Unfortunately, I didn’t bring one back. However, my heavy bags full of films are certainly worth that. It is in these pictures that the true Antarctica comes alive.28. Why is summer the best season to go to Antarctica?A.There are no snowstorms in summer.B. Night is longer than day in summer.C. The temperature often reaches below zero in summer.D. In this season, Antarctica is world of ice, storms and loneliness.29. Looking down, I immediately recognized that something was wrong, and ran down to the edge of the near bank. There I saw Ma Shwe with her three-month-old calf struggling in the fast-rising water, and it was a life-and-death struggle. Her calf was floating and screaming with fear. Ma Shwe was as near to the far bank as she could get, holding her whole body against the rushing water, and keeping the calf pressed against her huge body. Every now and then the rushing water would sweep the calf away. There was a sudden rise in the water and the calf was washed clean over the mother’s body and was gone. Ma Shwe turned quickly to reach it and pressed the calf with her head and trunk(象鼻) against the rocky bank. Then with a huge effort, she picked it up in her trunk and tried until she was able to place it on a narrow shelf of rock.Just at this moment she fell back into the river. If she were carried down, it would be certain death. I knew, as well as she did, that there was one spot(地点) where she could get up the bank, but it was on the other side from where she had put her calf. While I was wondering what I could do next, I heard the sound of a mother’s love. Instead, he has been told to wait another two years, until he is 18. The 16-year-old works for a small firm in Liverpool, where the problem of most young people of his age is finding a job. David’s firm releases (推出) two new games for the fast throwing computer market each month. But David’s biggest headache is what to do with his money. Even though he earns a lot, he cannot drive a car, take out a mortgage (抵押贷款), or get credit cards. When monkey-pox, a disease usually found in the African rain forest, suddenly turns up in children in the AmericanMidwest, it’s hard not to wonder if the disease that comes from foreign animals is homing in on human beings. “Most of the infections (感染) we think of as human infections started in other animals,” says Stephen Morse, director of the Center for Public Health Preparedness at Columbia University. It’s not just that we’re going to where the animals are; we’re also bringing them closer to us. Popular foreign pets have brought a whole new disease to this country. A strange illness killed Isaksen’s pets, and she now thinks that keeping foreign pets is a bad idea. “I don’t think it’s fair to have them as pets when we have such a limited knowledge of them,” says Isaksen.“Laws allowing these animals to be brought in from deep forest areas without stricter control need changing,”says Peter Schantz. Monkey-pox may be the wake-up call. Researchers believe infected animals may infect their owners. We know very little about these new diseases. A new bug (病毒) may be kind at first. One significant change that has profoundly influenced my life is the overcoming of my shyness.Once, I was a timid individual, hesitant to engage in social interactions or voice my opinions. This shyness often held me back from pursuing my dreams and connecting with people. However, a pivotal moment in my high school life changed everything. It was during a school debate competition when I was chosen to represent my class. Initially, I was terrified, but with the encouragement of my teacher and peers, I summoned the courage to step onto the stage. As I delivered my arguments, I felt a sense of empowerment that I had never experienced before. The applause at the end of my speech was a testament to the fact that I had overcome my shyness.Since then, my life has undergone a remarkable transformation. I have become more confident in myself and my abilities. I actively participate in various school clubs and events, making new friends and learning new skills. I have also discovered a passion for public speaking and have since participated in several debate competitions, winning awards for my efforts. The impact of overcoming shyness is not just personal. It has also allowed me to contribute more to my community. As my year as chief resident(进修医生) drew to a close, I asked myself this question 36 more than one occasion. The answer, I concluded, was 37 . When you can say to yourself, “There is no surgical patient I cannot treat competently, treat just 38 or better than any other surgeon” — then, and not until then, you are 39 a surgeon. I was 40 that point.41 , for example, the emergency situations that we met almost every night. The first few months of the year I had 42 the ringing of the telephone. I’d 45 all the facts of the case and, often, wonder 46 I had made a poor decision. More than once at two or three in the 47 , after lying awake for an hour, I’d get out of 48 , dress and drive to the hospital to see the patient myself. It was the only 49 I could find the 50 of mind I needed to relax. Now, in the last month of my residency, 51 was no longer a problem. Sometimes I still couldn’t be sure of my decision, but I had learned to 52 this as a constant problem for a surgeon. I knew that with my knowledge and experience, any decision I’d made was bound to be a 53 one. It was a nice feeling. This all sounds conceited(自负的) and I guess it is —54 a surgeon needs conceit. He needs it to encourage him in trying moments when he’s bothered by the 55 and uncertainties that are part of the practice of medicine. He has to feel that he’s as good as and probably better than any other surgeon in the world. Call it conceit —call it self-confidence; whatever it was, I had it.11. A. at B. in C. on D. for12. But after forty days without a fish the boy’s parents had told him that th e old man was now definitely and finally salao, which is the worst form of unlucky, and the boy had gone at their orders in another boat which caught three good fish the first week. It made the boy sad to see the old man come in each day with his skiff empty and he always went down to help him carry either the coiled lines or the gaff (鱼钩) and harpoon (鱼叉) and the sail that was furled around the mast (桅杆). The sail was patched with flour sacks and, furled, it looked like the flag of permanent defeat. The old man was thin and gaunt with deep wrinkles in the back of his neck. The brown blotches(斑点)of the skin cancer the sun brings from its reflection on the tropic sea were on his cheeks. The blotches ran well down the sides of his face and his hands had the deep-creased scars from handling heavy fish on the cords. But none of these scars were fresh. They were as old as erosions in a fishless desert.Everything about him was old except his eyes and they were the same color as the sea and were cheerful and undefeated.“Santiago,” the boy said to him as they climbed the bank from where the skiff was pulled up. “I could go with you again. We’ve made some money.”The old man had taught the boy to fish and the boy loved him.“No,” the old man said. “You’re with a lucky boat. Stay with them.”“But remember how you went eighty-seven days without fish and then we caught big ones every day for three weeks.”“I remember,” the old man said. “I know you did not leave me because you doubted.”“It was papa who made me leave. I am a boy and I must obey him.”“I know,” the old man said. “It is quite normal.”“He hasn’t much faith.”“No,” the old man said. “But we have. Haven’t we?”“Yes,” the boy said. “Can I offer you a beer on the Terrace and then we’ll take the stuff home.”“Why not?” the old man said. “Between fishermen.”31. What is the main idea of the passage?A. Shenzhou-7 is better equipped than the last two spaceships.B. Shenzhou-7 will be more successful than the last two launches.C. All the systems involved in the launching have been prepared.D. China is ready for the launching of Shenzhou-7.57. We can learn from the passage ________.A. The underlined word”stringent”most probably meansA. challengingB. encouragingC. interestingD. movingBTight-lipped elders used to say, “It’s not what you want in this world, but what you get.”Psychology teaches that you do get what you want if you know what you want and want the right things. You can make a mental blueprint of a desire as you would make a blueprint of a house, and each of us is continually making these blueprints in the general routine of everyday living. If we intend to have friends to dinner, we plan the menu, make a shopping list, decide which food to cook first, and such planning is an essential for any type of meal to be served.Likewise, if you want to find a job, take a sheet of paper, and write a brief account of yourself. In making a blueprint for a job, begin with yourself, for when you know exactly what you have to offer, you can intelligently plan where to sell your services. This account of yourself is actually a sketch of your working life and should include education, experience and references. Such an account is valuable. It can be referred to in filling out standard application blanks and is extremely helpful in personal interviews. While talking to you, you could-be employer is deciding whether your education, your experience, and other qualifications, will pay him to employ you and your “wares” and abilities must be displayed in an orderly and reasonably connected manner. When you have carefully prepared a blueprint of your abilities and desires, you have something tangible to sell. Then you are ready to hunt for a job. Get all the possible information about your could-be job. Make inquiries as to the details regarding the job and the firm. Keep your eyes and ears open, and use your own judgment. Spend a certain amount of time each day seeking the employment you wish for, and keep in mind: Securing a job is your job now.59. What do the elders mean when they say, “It’s not what you want in this world, but what you get.”?A. You’ll certainly get what you want.B. It’s no use dreaming.C. You should be dissatisfied with what you have.D. It’s essential to set a goal for yourself.60 A blueprint made before inviting a friend to dinner is used in this passage as ________.A. an illustration of how to write an application for a jobB. an indication of how to secure a good jobC. a guideline for job descriptionD. a principle for job evaluation61 According to the passage, one must write an account of himself before startingto find a job because ________.A. that is the first step to please the employerB. that is the requirement of the employerC. it enables him to know when to sell his servicesD. it forces him to become clearly aware of himselfCDiet Coke, diet Pepsi, diet pills, no-fat diet, vegetable diet… We are surrounded by the word “diet” everywhere we look and listen. We have so easily been attrac ted by the promise and potential of diet products that we have stopped thinking about what diet products are doing to us. We are paying for products that harm us psychologically and physically(身体上).Diet products significantly weaken us psychologically. On one level, we are not allowing our brain to admit that our weight problems lie not in actually losing the weight, but in controlling the consumption of fatty, high-calorie, unhealthy foods. Diet products allow us to jump over the thinking stage and go straight for the scale (秤)instead. All we have to do is to swallow or recognize the word “diet” in food labels. On another level, diet products have greater psychological effects. Every time we have a zero-calorie drink, we are telling ourselves without our awareness that we don’t have to work to get results. Diet products make people believe that gain comes without pain, and that life can be without resistance and struggle. The danger of diet products lies not only in the psychological effects they have on us, but also in the physical harm that they cause. Diet foods can indirectly harm our bodies because consuming them instead of healthy foods means we are preventing our bodies from having basic nutrients(营养成分). Diet foods and diet pills contain zero calorie only because the diet industry has created chemicals to produce these wonder products. Diet products may not be nutritional, and the chemical that go into diet products are potentially dangerous. Now that we are aware of the effects that diet products have on us, it is time to seriously think about buying them. Losing weight lies in the power of minds, not in the power of chemicals. Once we realize this, we will be much better able to resist diet products, and therefore prevent the psychological harm that comes from using them.62 From Paragraph 1, we learn that ________.A. diet products fail to bring out people’s potentialB. people have difficulty in choosing diet productsC. diet products are misleading peopleD. people are fed up with diet products63. One psychological effect of diet products is that people tend to _____.A. try out a variety of diet foodsB. hesitate before they enjoy diet foodsC. pay attention to their own eating habitsD. watch their weight rather than their diet64. In Paragraph 3, “gain comes without pain” probably means ______.A. losing weight is effortlessB. it costs a lot to lose weightC. diet products bring no painD. diet products are free from calories65. Which of the following shows the structure of the passage?DFree and secure accommodation, no bills and even the odd home-cooked meal. It sounds like the perfect living arrangement for cash-strapped students. Two mothers believe they have devised a way for struggling students to save on accommodation costs when they leave home to study at university.Kate Barnham and Amanda Flude have launched Student Swaps, an online accommodation forum (论坛) for parents and students, in advance of the introduction in September of £3,000 higher education top-up fees.Their website says, “The principle behind Student Swaps is to enable students to literally swap (交换) family homes.”The website will hold a database of students who would like to swap and link them with suitable matches. So those from one town / city could swap with those from a different town / city. The site describes itself as offering a “cost-free accommodation alternative…at a time of growing student debt”. There is no charge for the service at the moment but Ms Barnham and Ms Flude intend to introduce a £10 annual fee if it becomes established. However, the National Union of Students (NUS) has warned that, while the scheme may sound appealing to struggling freshers, it lacks any formal regulation.Veronica King, NUS vice-president of welfare, said, “The fact that this scheme has even been suggested is evidence to the high levels of debt students now face on graduation.”Recent research has shown that students are more likely to live at home in coming years, in a bid to cut down on the cost of a degree.“This is worrying, as it may mean that students choose their university on the basis of where it is, rather than because it offers the best course for them. It also means students will miss out on what is for some a key part of the student experience-living away from home.”66. A “cash-strapped” student means one who __________.A. lacks moneyB. prefers to stay at homeC. is careful with moneyD. wants to change cash67. What is Kate Barnham and Amanda Flude’s purpose of launching Student Swaps?A. To provide cheaper accommodation for students.B. To let students stay close to their universities.C. To help students spend less on accommodation costs.D. To let students exchange ideas freely online.68. What can students do on Student Swaps?A. They can find students to exchange homes with.B. You find these careers in engineering, in production, in statistical work, and in teaching. But there is an increasing demand for people who are able to take in a great area at a glance, people who perhaps do not know too much about any one field. There is, in other words, a demand for people who are capable of seeing the forest rather than the trees, of making general judgments. We can call these people “generalists”. And these “generalists”are particularly needed for positions in administration, where it is their job to see that other people do the work, where they have to plan for other people, to organize other people’s work, to begin it and judge it. The specialist understands one field; his concern is with technique and tools. He is a “trained”man; and his educational background is properly technical or professional. The generalists and especially the administrator deal with people; his concern is with leadership, with planning, and with direction giving. He is an “educated” man; and the humanities are his strongest foundation. Very rarely is a specialist capable of being an administrator. And very rarely is a good generalist also a good specialist in a particular field. Any organization needs both kinds of people, though different organizations need them in different proportions. It is your task to find out, during your training period, into which of the two kinds of jobs you fit, and to plan your career accordingly.Your first job may turn out to be the right job for you but this is pure accident. Certainly you should not change jobs constantly or people will become suspicious of your ability to hold any job. At the same time, you must not look upon the first job as the final job; it is primarily a training job, an opportunity to understand yourself and your fitness for being an employee.1. Do you ever throw your school lunch leftovers into a compost (混合肥料) bin when you are finished? They are all part of a regular school day at Barnard Environmental Studies Magnet School in New Haven, Connecticut. Known as a “green”school, Barnard attracts students from all over the region who are interested in environmental studies.“We do Earth Day all the year round,”said Marjorie Drucker, Barnard’s Magnet Resource teacher. With the school’s special classes, its 325 students study the environment all day long. “Being green means that everything in the building is designed with the environment in mind,”Drucker told Scholastic News. For example, the lights go off when people leave the room, and special windows provide “passive light”, cutting down on the need for electric lighting. When a window is open, the air-conditioning automatically turns off.Conserving energy is not all that students do to help the environment. While learning about the dying salmon population in the Connecticut rivers, students also do something to help out---- they raise more salmon. In the classrooms there are fish tanks containing salmon eggs. The eggs are kept in water at two degrees Celsius. After the eggs hatch, students observe the baby salmon through all the stages of development, and then release the adult salmon into Connecticut rivers.Composting is another part of taking care of the environment at Barnard Students deal with their lunches by throwing the remaining food into a compost bin in a greenhouse. The compost is used to help grow plants. At Barnard, almost everything has to do with the environment. Students sing songs about the environment; their artworks have something to do with the environment; even their math classes are focused on protecting the environment.Barnard offers chances that students can’t get in a regular school. The school’s goal is to teach children to be good environmental role models. They also learn to live in a different way. To attend the school, students have to apply and express their interest in protecting the environment. “Students come here because they care about the environment,” said Drucker.。
