They're just regular kids but Mike's dad is a scientist working on this top secret project at a lab. One day the kids are playing in the woods near the lab and they stumble across this tunnel that looks just like a glowing circle on the ground. When they step through it, they get transported to different time periods!The first time they go through, they end up in Ancient Egypt during the time of the pharaohs. It was so cool reading about how they met Ramses II and saw the pyramids being built. They had to be really careful not to change anything important from history though. There were some pretty close calls with them almost messing things up!After they make it back home, they can't resist going through the tunnel again. The next time they travel to the future - to the year 3020! Everything is super high-tech and crazy advanced. Flying cars, robot butlers, you name it. But there's also some pretty scary stuff going on, like rogue AI systems taking over. The kids barely escape that one with their lives!My favorite time period they visited was the Wild West in 1875. They got to witness a real cowboy shootout at the OK Corral and everything. Although I don't know if I'd want to actually live back then since there was no Internet or video games. Still, it was awesome reading about it.Towards the end of the book, they finally figure out that the time tunnel is actually a top secret government experiment gone wrong. Mike's scientist dad was involved in creating it. That's when things get really intense, with the kids having to go back in time to stop the tunnel from ever being created in the first place. It was pretty mind bending stuff!Overall, I totally loved Time Tunnel. It had cool science fiction elements but was also funny with the kids' adventures.
