AJapanese students work very hard but many are unhappy. They feel heavy pressures from their parents to do well in school. Most students are always being told by their parents to study harder so that they can have a wonderful life. Though this may be goodideas for those very bright students,it can have very bad results for many students who are not quick enough at learning.Unluckily,a number of students killed themselves. Others are after comfort in using drugs. Some do bad things with trouble-makers and turn to crime(犯罪). Many of them have tried very hard at school but have failed in the exams and have disappointed their parents. Such students feel that they are less important and leave school before they have finished their study. It is surprising that though most Japanese parents are worried about their children, they do not help them in any way. Many parents feel that they are not able to help their children and that it is the teachers' work to help their children. To make matters worse, a lot of parents send their children to special school called juku-cram schools. These schools are open during the evening and on weekends, and their only purpose is to prepare students to pass exams, they do not try to educate students in any real sense of the real world. It thus comes as a shock to realize that almost three quarters of the junior or high school population attend these cram schools.Ordinary Japanese schools usually have rules about everything from the students' hair to their clothes and things in their school bag. Child psychologists now think that such strict rules often lead to a feeling of being unsafe and being unable to fit into society. They regard the rules as being harmful to the development of each student. They believe that no sense of moral(道德的)values is developed and that students are given neither guidance nor training in becoming good citizens.41. A lot of Japanese students are unhappy at school because .A. they work very hardB. they find they can't do well at schoolC. they feel unimportantD. they are under too much pressure42. Because of their failure at school, some students take drugs to .A. kill themselvesB. seek comfortC. disappoint their parentsD. make trouble43. In juku-cram schools students .A. are taken good care of by the teachersB. feel no pressureC. are trained to pass examsD. can learn a lot of useful things44. In ordinary Japanese schools,.A. there are strict rulesB. students feel safeC. students can do anythingD. learning is not importantBTalking to Teachers—Teachers are just people. Behind that desk, is a living, breathing human being. And just like any human being, they will probably be friendly to people who talk nicely to them. Teachers also seem to get along better with children who take schoolwork seriously and are prepared for class. And, just like any other human being, teachers like to be appreciated. The next time your teacher helps you solve a math problem or figure out a science project, say thank you with a smile.Talking to Parents— Parents can be very supportive if their children ask for help. If you think there’s something your parents can do to help you socialize more or feel more comfortable around people, then ask them. Very often, parents want very much to help, but reall y don’t know what to do. Pick a quiet time of the day and ask to talk. Tell them how you feel. Maybe they had the same trouble when they were kids. This Stranger Thing— This is always a tough one. How do you deal with a neighbor, the mail carrier, or someone walking down your street—situations that often seem to cause arguments between kids and parents. The answer to these questions will vary from kid to kid, from parent to parent because all cultures are different. Some folks live in small towns where a h ello to everyone is "what’s done". Then there are kids who live in the city who may have been taught not to speak to anyone they don’t know. If you’re having trouble with this and always feel awkward in these kinds of situations, you might want to talk to your parents or a teacher about it. Where do they think you should draw the line? When is silence rude and when is it wise?45. From the first paragraph we may learn that teachers dislike____ .A. being talked to nicelyB. their students to be serious with the schoolworkC. the students’ appreciationD. the students who are not ready for classes46. They’re born with natural abilities to do certain things. Wild animals also learn by copying their parents and practicing. And pets learn through training. But instincts a nd training aren’t the only keys to animals’ behavior. Scientists say animals’ thoughts and feelings also influence their actions. Animals often make choices, plans, and sensible changes. They can help others and solve problems. Some even make and use tools! If animals could talk, what would they say about their thoughts and feelings? A gorilla (大猩猩) born in captivity (关在笼子里) has helped answer that question. Koko,a gorilla, was taught to use sign language (手势语). She has learned hundreds of words!Koko on ce had a pet cat she named All Ball. "Koko love Ball," she signed. ―Soft good cat." One time, she blamed the cat for biting her by signing "You bad dirty toilet!" When her pet died, Koko cried. "Sad for sleeping cat," she signed.Koko calls herself "fine animal gorilla". She uses sign language to argue, joke, and ask and answer questions."Most animals can’t use words to tell us their thoughts," says Dr. Jonathan Balcombe. "But Koko shows us that animals have their own ideas and feelings." Dr. Balcombe is a scientist at the Humane Society of the United States. He says there’s even more to discover about animals through field studies. In field studies, people watch animals in their natural environment."Scientists who study animals’ natural behaviors learn how animals live and think," Balcombe says.
