In addition to making calls, mobile phones also support a wide variety of other services such as text messaging, email, Internet access, business applications, gaming and photography. We can bring them everywhere, and can be reached by others anytime. They make the world smaller, bringing people together no matter where they are.But we could have some risks when using our mobile phones. We may have accidents when we use them while driving. Some studies show that mobile phones can do harm to our bodies; and materials in mobile phones could damage our environment.Since there are so many risks, why do we still have mobile phones This is because these risks or disadvantages can be overcome. For example, while we are driving we can easily pull up our car if we really need to use the phone. All this makes it difficult to decide exactly how much the tax is.There was an artist who was always very careful to pay the proper amount. One year, after posting his check as usual, he began to wonder if he had paid enough, and after a lot of work, with a pencil and paper, he found that he had not. He thought that he owed the government something. He was just writing another check to send it to the tax collector when the postman dropped a letter into the box at the front door. Opening it, the artist was surprised to find inside it a check for five pounds from the tax collector. If someone is called very early in the morning, while he is shaving or having breakfast, the time of the call indicates great importance of the matter which requires immediate attention of the person called. The same implication is attached to telephone calls made after 11:00 . at night. If someone receives a call during sleeping hours, he assumes it’s an urgency of life or death. The time chosen for the call communicates its importance. Time plays a very important role in our social life as you can imagine. In the USA an invitation should be sent to the guests in advance because guests usually believe that they are not highly regarded if the invitation to a dinner party is extended only three or four days before the party date. But it is not always necessarily true of the case all over the world. In some other countries, it may be taken stupid to make an appointment too far in advance because plans made for a date more than a week away tend to be forgotten. The concept of time varies in different regions of the world. Thus, misunderstandings are sometimes inevitable between men of different cultural backgrounds that treat time differently. Promptness is valued highly in America, for example. A lack of promptness is regarded as being impolite or not being fully responsible. In the US it would be incredible to keep a business partner or a guest waiting for an hour, and it would be too impolite and unacceptable by their social etiquettes. A person who is 5 minutes late is expected to give some words of explanation to the people waiting, though he might not complete his sentence.16. What is the main idea of this passage?A. It is not customary to telephone someone in the morning or insleeping hours in the US.B. The role of time in social life over the world..C. If people are not prompt, they may be regarded as impolite ornot fully responsible in the US.D. Not every country treats the concept of time as the same.17. What does it mean according to the passage if you call someone during his or her sleeping hours?A. A matter of work.B. A matter of life or death.C. You want to see him or her.D. You want to make an appointment with him or her.18. Which of the following time is proper if you want to make an appointment with your friend?A. At 7:00 .B. At 4:00 .C. At the midnight.D. At 4:00 .19. Which of the following statements is true according to the passage?A. In the USA guests tend to feel they are highly regarded if theinvitation to a dinner party is expended only three or fourdays before the party date.B. There id no misunderstanding between people from differentcultures about the concept of time.C. It may be considered foolish to make an appointment well inadvance in the USA.D. Being on time is highly valued in America.20. From the passage we can infer that ____________.A. it’s a matter of life or death if you call someone in daytimeB. the meaning of time differs in different parts of the worldC. it makes no difference in the US whether you are early or latefor a business partyD. if a person is late for a date, he needn’t make anyexplanationIV. Would you like to have a try?Q:What do we learn from the dialog?ScriptThere are various types of questions asked at a job interview. Most job interviews start with chit-chat type of questions. They are designed to break the ice and get the conversation flowing. Examples are questions like "Did it take you long to get here?", "Did you find the place all right?", "Were you able to find parking?" Most of these just require a "yes, no problem" type of response; you can elaborate if you wish. However, ensure that you don't provide information that will give them a bad impression. If you say something like "It took me ages to get here. The traffic was so bad;I hate traveling to this side of town", it would not do you good. If this is the place where you would be working, they would automatically be worried that you will be late for work everyday.More questions will be asked to find out a bit more about you. They might be historical questions regarding your previous employment or education, or they may be hypothetical questions starting with "What if...?". These are aimed at finding out how you would handle a situation or at finding out your personal views in certain areas.Whenever answering a job interview question, give as much information as you can. Tell them why, where, when and how. In other words use examples to prove what you are saying. Make a statement, then support it by giving an example of a situation and how you handled it.ScriptFor students who want to know how to write a résumé, Professor Carson has suggested some techniques.First, whenever possible, use exact numbers. A number is worth 1,000 words. People do react to numbers! Numbers are alive and powerful. They create vivid images in our minds. General statements are easy to ignore. Be specific and use numbers when describing your duties and achievements. Don't say"managing a major turnover". Say "managing a $27,000,000 turnover". Don't say "extensive teaching experience". Say "7,000 teaching hours". Better still, say something like "7,300 teaching hours"—the more precise a figure is, the more real it becomes.Second, you should sell benefits, not skills. Holiday companies don't sell holidays. They sell relaxation, adventure, sun, sea and sand, which are the benefits of a holiday. You should not sell your skills since many other people have the same skills. You should sell the benefits of your skills. When you write down your skills and past duties, be careful to explain their benefits to the employer.Third, you should try to meet your employer's needs. Employers want people who can solve problems, not create them! Your résumé and cover letter should show how you can solve the employer's problems and meet their needs. And in addition to the skills or needs shown in a job advertisement, an employer may have other needs. You should identify these additional needs and show how you can satisfy them too. But concentrate first on the needs listed in the job advertisement. Your additional solutions should come later, after you already have the employer's attention.。

A few weeks ago I got a computer, but I am mechanically illiterate. I knew that children had no fear of the future, so that seemed a good place to seek help. I asked my nephew, twelve years old, at an elementary school, to help me.My nephew took the machine for granted and has simply accepted the fact that co mputers are now a way of life. He plays with them and does his homework on them a nd even creates programs for them. I, on the other hand, am terrified by what this eq uipment can do. It can interchange paragraphs, switch words around and even correct my spelling. It informs me of its limitations, takes commands and asks questions. It ev en seems to have a sense of communication. Rather than accusing me of making an e rror, it prints “One of us has made a mistake!” It never gets tired and is always patie nt and ready to go when I am.I think it was somewhat normal for me to be suspicious of computers. They repres ent a break with some very familiar habits and traditions. It is only human to instinctiv ely avoid anything that shifts thoroughly from the acceptable, comfortable past. But th e world is governed by ceaseless change and we must therefore establish links with th e present and future as well as the past. Computer technology is an excellent case in point, as the newest systems grow out of date in only a few years, or even months. This ability to see, experiencing and accepting the new is one of our saving charac teristics. To be fearful of tomorrow, to close ourselves to possibilities, to resist the inev itable, to advocate standing still when all else is moving forward, is to lose touch. If w e accept the new with joy and wonder, we can move gracefully into each tomorrow. M ore often than not, the children shall lead us.(1).[本题2分] According to the second paragraph, which of the following statements is t rue?(A) The nephew believed that machines were made for people to do whatever the y wanted.(B) Computers are not only used to communicate, but also to remove their limita tions.(C) The nephew thought it was natural to accept the fact that computers are now a way of life.(D) It is a fact that both adults and children have accepted computers as a way of life.(2).[本题2分]Which of the following doesn’t the author’s computer do?(A) It accuses the author of making mistakes.(B) It informs the author of his mistakes.(C) It asks the author of making mistake.(D) It correct the author spelling mistakes.(3).[本题2分] According to the third paragraph, it is human nature that we resist those things which ______________.(A) change completely from the acceptable and comfortable past(B) make people stand still when all is moving forward(C) only represent the comfortable and acceptable past(D) change thoroughly into the comfortable and acceptable past(4).[本题2分]How do you understand “It…is always…ready to go when I am” in the sec ond paragraph?(A) It is always ready to start working when I am ready for work.(B) It is always ready to inform me when I am ready to go.(C) When I am ready to go, it is patient to wait.(D) When I am ready to go, it has already gone.(5).[本题2分] It can be inferred from the passage that the author_______________.(A) prevent the future from being destroyed by the computer(B) would learn the computer science(C) accept the time of computer(D) help the nephew study communicating with the computer42.Even if the word ‘pop’ disappears from the English vocabulary, the influence of pop will remain. Pop has become part of British and American history. There has always been a close cultural link, or tie, between Britain and English-speaking America, not only in literature but also in popular arts, especially music. Befo re the Second World War the Americans exported jazz and the blues. During the 1950 s they exported rock ’n’ roll, and star singers like Elvis Presley were admired by young British and Americans alike. Then in the early 1960s a new sound was heard, very different from anything w hich had so far come from the American side of the Atlantic. This was the Liverpool, o r Merseyside, ‘beat’. The new pop culture, in a few years, swept across Britain and Am erica, and across most of the countries of the western world. The people responsible for the pop revolution were four Liverpool boys who join ed together in a group and called themselves The Beatles. They played in small clubs i n the back streets of the city. Unlike the famous solo stars, who had their songs writt en for them, the Beatles wrote their own words and music. They had a close personal relationship with their audience, and they expected them to join in and dance to the ‘beat’ of the music. Audience participation is an essential characteristic of pop culture. Some pop groups, in particular the Rolling Stones, did more than just entertai n. They wrote words which were deliberately intended to shock. They represented the anger and bitterness of youth struggling for freedom against authority. The Beatles, on the other hand, finally won the admiration of people. As they d eveloped, their songs became more serious. They wrote not only of love, but of death and poverty and daily life. Largely thanks to the Beatles, pop music had grown into a big and profitable industry. The influence of British pop in America was great. American pop groups soon be came as famous as British groups. Both the British and Americans are experimenting with new ideas, and pop is developing and changing, and mixing with modern folk mus ic.(1).[本题2分] When did the British start to export their pop music?(A) In 1940s(B) In 1960s(C) In 1950s(D) In 1970s(2).[本题2分] Which statement is true?(A) The word “pop” would be out of date someday.(B) The spirit of pop shift from America to Britain.(C) The pop music comes from American.(D) The spirit of pop music would not disappear.(3).[本题2分] What is the difference between the Beatles and the famous solo stars?(A) All of the above.(B) The Beatles welcomed the audience’s participation.(C) The Beatles has four group members.(D) The famous solo stars didn’t write songs themselves.(4).[本题2分] The Rolling Stone wrote songs not only to entertain, but also __________ _____.(A) release their anger and dissatisfaction(B) make people feel relax(C) show their love to the world(D) fight for the authority(5).[本题2分]In the author’s eyes, which one is more important, English pop and Ameri can pop?(A) Both of them(B) English pop(C) American pop(D) None of them43.A person, like a commodity(商品), needs packaging. But going too far is absolutely undesirab le. A little exaggeration, however, does no harm when it shows the person’s unique qualities to their advantages. To show personal attractiveness in a casual and n atural way, it is important for one to have a clear knowledge of oneself. A skilled pack ager knows how to add art to nature without any signs of embellishment(装饰), so that the person so packaged is not a commodity but a human being, lively and lovely.A young person, especially a female, shining with beauty and full of life, has all th e favor granted by God. Any attempt to make up would be self-defeating. Youth, howe ver, comes and goes in a flash. Packaging for the middle-aged is primarily to hide the marks made by years. If you still enjoy life enough to keep self-confidence and work a t pioneering work, you are unique in your natural qualities, and your attractiveness an d grace will remain. Elderly people are beautiful if their river of life has been, through plains, mountains and jungles, running its course as it should. You have really lived yo ur life, which now arrives at a self-satisfied stage of quietness and calmness with no in terest in fame or wealth. There is no need to make use of hair dyeing. The snow-capp ed mountain is itself a beautiful scene of fairyland. Let your looks change from young t o old in step with natural ageing process so as to keep in harmony(和谐)with nature, f or harmony itself is beauty, while the other way round will only end in unpleasantness. To be in the elder’s company is like reading a thick book of deluxe (bette r quality) ed ition that attracts one so much as to be unwilling to part with.As long as one finds where one stands, one knows how to package oneself, just as a commodity sets up its brand by the right packaging.(1).[本题2分] It can conclude from the text that ____________.(A) people should be packed at all ages(B) proper packing makes people attractive(C) people should be packed in a special way(D) elderly people also care about packing(2).[本题2分] According to the author, if you want to deep in harmony with nature, youshould _________.(A) give up fame and wealth(B) make up at a young age(C) dye your hair(D) ollow the ageing process(3).[本题2分] For the middle-aged, attractiveness ____________.(A) hardly exists(B) comes from the appearance(C) is the strongest(D) comes from the inside(4).[本题2分] The last sentence of the second paragraph means that elderly people ___ _________.(A) enjoy reading thick books of beautiful nature and fairyland(B) are usually packed like a finely-made book.(C) do a lot of traveling and can give you much information(D) experience a lot and have rich knowledge of life(5).[本题2分]From the passage we can see the author’s attitude to human packaging i s____________.(A) negative(B) ironical(C) understandable(D) sensible44.Celine began singing when she was 5 and had recorded her first demo by the timeshe was 12 years old. 二、作文题(共4 题、0 / 20 分)1、Directions: For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write an essay on Renting an Apartment off Campus. You should write at least 120 words but no more than 180 words.1. 现在大学生在校外租房的现象很普遍2. 这种现象产生的原因3. 我的看法参考答案是:Renting an Apartment off CampusNowadays, an increasing number of college students would rather rent an apartment off campus than live in a dormitory. This phenomenon has raised considerable concern among parents and college faculties about living off campus, which is caused by the following reasons. To begin with, living conditions of an apartment off campus may be better than those of a dormitory. A rented apartment is often equipped with an independent washroom and a shower equipment which may be of great advantage over the school dormitory. In general, a typical dormitory often accomodates four or six, or even eight students and it is too crowded and noisy for those who prefer private space as well as quiet circumstances. In addition, instead of being regulated by dormitory rules, students may enjoy more freedom in a rented apartment. If college students intend to rent an apartment, I think they should give top priority to safety. It is important to make a survey of the surroundings first to ensure the security. Besides, when they tend to enjoy the freedom, they should have a better sense of self-control and make good use of their time.2、Directions: In this section, you are asked to write a composition with the title “The Biggest Dream of My Life.” You should write at least 120 words and cover the following points.1. What is your biggest dream?2. Why do you have it? For how long have you got it?3. What are your plans to achieve your dream?参考答案是:The Biggest Dream of My LifeI know many people whose biggest dreams are things such as what career they want to get into, how much money they can earn. My dream is nothing like that. My biggest dream has always been and will always be to travel around the world. I have one life here on Earth, so I don’t want to die regretting that I didn’t see it all.Actually I have had this dream ever since I was in primary school. In one geography class, when the teacher presented us the globe and national flags of various nations, I thought I found the dream in the depth of my heart. And the moment I came to college, I had always envisioned myself of becoming a nomad. I would roam around the world. No permanent。

(阅读理解题)Using a public telephone may well be one of the minor irritations of life, demanding patience, determination and a strong possibility of failure, together on occasion with considerable unpopularity. The hopeful caller (shall we call him George?) waits till six o’clock in the evening to take advantage of the so-called “cheap rates” for a long-distance call. The telephone box, with two broken panes of glass in the side, stands at the junction of two main roads with buses, lorries and cars roaring past. It is pouring with rain as George joins a queue of four depressed-looking people. Time passes slowlyand seems to come to a standstill while the person immediately before George carries on an endless conversation, pausing only to insert another coin every minute or so.Eventually the receiver is replaced and the caller leaves the box. George enters and picks up one of the directories inside, only to discover that someone unknown has torn out the very page he needs. Nothing for it but to dial directory Enquiries, wait patiently for a reply down the number given. At last George can go ahead with his call. Just as he is starting to dial, however, the door opens and an unpleasant-looking face peers in with the demand, “Can’t you hurry up?” Ignoring such barbarity, George continues to dial and his unwanted companion withdraws. At last he hears the burr-burr of the ringing tone, immediately followed by rapid pips demanding his money, but he is now so upset that he knocks down the coins he has placed ready on the top of the box. Having at last located them, he dials again: the pips are repeated and he hastily inserts the coins. A cold voice informs him, “Grand Hotel, Chalfont Wells.”“I’ve an urgent message for a Mr. Smith who is a guest in your hotel. Could you put me through to him? I’m afraid I don’t know his room number.”The response appears less than enthusiastic and a long long silence follows. George inserts more coins. Then the voice informs him, “I’ve been trying to locate Mr. Smith but the hall porter reports having seen him leave about a minute ago.”Breathing heavily, George replaces the receiver, just as the knocking on the door starts again.5. ( 单选题 ) St. Valentine’s Day is a holiday for __________. (本题0.0分)A、people celebrating the new year’s comingB、 people fooling othersC、 people getting a family reunionD、 people expressing love to their lovers学生答案:D标准答案:D解析:得分:010. (阅读理解题)February 14th is a complicated but interesting holiday. First of all, St. Valentine’s Day is not a holiday from work. No one gets a day off. On Valentine’s Day people usually send romantic cards to someone they love or want to be loved by. The cards are called “valentines”. They are very colorful, often decorated with hearts, flowers, or birds, and have humorous or sentimental verses printed inside. The basic message of the verse is always “Be My Valentine”, “Be My Sweet Heart” or “Lover”.A valentine is often anonymous, or sometimes signed “Guess who”. The person receiving it has to guess who sent it. This can lead to interesting speculation. And that’s half the fun of valentines. One of the symbols of St. Valentine’s Day is the Roman god of Love, called Cupid. Cupid is often printed on the card; he is a winged infant, not wearing anything, poised to shoot his arrow into a heart. He would shoot an arrow of love into a person’s heart to make the person fall in love immediately, maybe with the first person to come along. Sometimes one arrow would go through two hearts, holding them together. So on February 14th not only do we have pictures of the Christian St. Valentine but we also have pictures of the non-Christian Cupid, the Roman god of Love. But it is from the Christians that we get the stories about St. Valentine’s Day that most people have come to believe. One story is about a Christian man whose name sounded something like “Valentine.”He lived around AD 250. At that time the Roman Emperor, Claudius II, refused to allow any Roman soldiers to get married for any reason whatsoever. Christian couples came to Valentine to be married. So Valentine would marry them in a Christian way. He was discovered and put in prison by the Emperor. One tradition says that he wrote notes to his friends by marking on leaves and then throwing them out the window of his prison. And the leaves were shaped like a heart.11. ( 单选题 ) Thanksgiving Day is originally celebrated by people for __________. (本题0.0分)A、 healthB、 freedomC、 harvestD、 safety学生答案:C标准答案:C解析:得分:016. (阅读理解题)Thanksgiving is celebrated every year on the fourth Thursday of November. The month of November is in autumn, the main season for harvesting crops. The writer O. Henry called Thanksgiving the one holiday that is purely American. It is not a religious holiday. But it has spiritual meaning.Thanksgiving began with the first European settlers in America. They gathered their crops, celebrated and gave thanks for the food.Tradition says Pilgrim settlers from England celebrated the first Thanksgiving in 1621. There is evidence that settlers in other parts of America held earlier Thanksgiving celebrations. But the Pilgrims’ Thanksgiving story is the most popular. The Pilgrims were religious dissidents who fled oppression in England. They went first to the Netherlands. Then they left that country to establish a colony in North America. The Pilgrims landed in 1620 in what later became known as Plymouth, Massachusetts.Their voyage across the Atlantic Ocean was difficult. Their first months in America were difficult, too. About one hundred Pilgrims landed just as autumn was turning to winter. During the cold months that followed, about half of them died. When spring came, the Pilgrims began to plant crops. An American Indian named Squanto helped them. When summer ended, the Pilgrims had a good harvest of corn and barley. There was enough food to last through the winter. The Pilgrims decided to hold a celebration to give thanks for their harvest. Writings from that time say Pilgrim leader William Bradford set a date late in the year.He invited members of a nearby Indian tribe to take part. There were many kinds of food to eat. The meal included wild birds such as ducks, geese and turkeys. That thanksgiving celebration lasted three days.As the American colonies grew, many towns and settlements held thanksgiving or harvest celebrations.17. (阅读理解题)The writers of murder stories go to a great deal of trouble to keep us guessing right up to the end. In actual fact, people often behave more strangely in real life than they do in stories. The following advertisement once appeared in a local newspaper: “An opportunity to earn $250 in a few minutes. A man who is willing to take chances is wanted for an out-of-the-ordinary job which can be performed only once.” A reader found this offer very generous and applied to the advertiser, but a bit suspicious, he gave a false name. Soon afterwards, he received a reply. Enclosed in the envelope was a typed note instructing him to ring a certain number if he was still interested. He did so and learnt on the telephone that the advertiser wanted him to “get rid of somebody” and would discuss it more fully with him next day. But the man told the police and from then on acted under their instructions. The police saw the two men meet and watched them as they drove away together. In the car the advertiser came to the point at once: he told the man he wanted him to shoot his wife. The reason he gave was that he was suffering from an incurable disease and wanted to live in a warmer country, but his wife objected to this. Giving the man some money, the advertiser told him to buy a gun and warned him to be careful of the dog which, though it would not bite, might attract attention. He also gave him a photograph of his wife so that he would be able to recognize her. After that, the advertiser suggested that the man should “do the job” next morning. Meanwhile, he would prepare his wife by telling her that a young man was going to call. After the murder, they would meet again outside a railway station and the money would be paid as arranged. The second meeting never took place, for the advertiser was arrested shortly afterwards and charged with attempting to persuade someone to murder his wife.37. Some have 26 from the face of the earth, others are dying slowly, but all have 27 changes as they have come into contact with an 28 machine civilization. The merging of diverse peoples into a common mass has produced tension among members of the minorities and the majority alike. The Old Order Amish, who arrived on American shores in colonial times, have 29 in the modem world in distinctive, small communities. They have resisted the homogenization 30 more successfully than others. In planting and harvest time one can see their bearded men working the fields with horses and their women hanging out the laundry in neat rows to dry. Many American people have seen Amish families, with the men wearing broad-brimmed black hats and the women in long dresses,in railway or bus 31 Although the Amish have lived with 32 America for over two and a half centuries, they have moderated its influence on their personal lives, their families, communities, and their values. The Amish are often 33 by other Americans to be relics of the past who live a simple, inflexible life dedicated to inconvenient out-dated customs. They are seen as abandoning both modem 34 and the American dream of success and progress. But most people have no quarrel with the Amish for doing things the old-fashioned way. Their conscientious objection was tolerated in wartime, for after all, they are good farmers who 35 theSection BDirections:In this section, you are going to read a passage with ten statements attached to it. Each statement contains information given in one of the paragraphs. Identify the paragraph from which the information is derived. You may choose a paragraph more than once. Each paragraph is marked with a letter. Answer the questions by marking the corresponding letter on Answer Sheet 2.Countries Rush for Upper Hand in Antarctica[A] On a glacier-filled island with fjords (峡湾) and elephant seals, Russia has built Antarctica's first Orthodox church on a hill overlooking its research base. Less than an hour away by snowmobile,Chinese labourers have updated the Great Wall Station, a vital part of China's plan to operate five bases on Antarctica, complete with an indoor badminton court and sleeping quarters for 150 people. Not to be outdone, India's futuristic new Bharathi base, built on stilts (桩子) using 134 interlocking shipping containers, resembles a spaceship. Turkey and Iran have announced plans to build bases, too.[B] More than a century has passed since explorers raced to plant their flags at the bottom of the world, and for decades to come this continent is supposed to be protected as a scientific preserve, shielded from intrusions like military activities and mining. But an array of countries are rushing to assert greater influence here, with an eye not just towards the day those protective treaties expire, but also for the strategic and commercial opportunities that already exist.[C] The newer players are stepping into what they view as a treasure house of resources. Some of the ventures focus on the Antarctic resources that are already up for grabs, like abundant sea life.South Korea, which operates state-of-the-art bases here, is increasing its fishing of krill (磷虾),found in abundance in the Southern Ocean, while Russia recently frustrated efforts to create one of the world's largest ocean sanctuaries here.[D] Some scientists are examining the potential for harvesting icebergs from Antarctica, which is estimated to have the biggest reserves of fresh water on the planet. Nations are also pressing ahead with space research and satellite projects to expand their global navigation abilities.[E] Building on a Soviet-era foothold, Russia is expanding its monitoring stations for Glonass, its version of the Global Positioning System (GPS). At least three Russian stations are already operating in Antarctica, part of its effort to challenge the dominance of the American GPS, and new stations are planned for sites like the Russian base, in the shadow of the Orthodox Church of the Holy Trinity.[F] Elsewhere in Antarctica, Russian researchers boast of their recent discovery of a freshwater reserve the size of Lake Ontario after drilling through miles of solid ice. "You can see that we're here to stay," said Vladimir Cheberdak,57, chief of the Bellingshausen Station, as he sipped tea under a portrait of Fabian Gottlieb yon Bellingshausen, a high-ranking officer in the Imperial Russian Navy who explored the Antarctic coast in 1820. [G] Antarctica's mineral, oil and gas wealth are a longer-team prize. The treaty banning mining here, shielding coveted ( 令人垂涎的) reserves of iron ore, coal and chromium, comes up for review in 2048. Researchers recently found kimberlite (金伯利岩) deposits hinting at the existence of diamonds. And while assessments vary widely, geologists estimate that Antarctica holds at least 36 billion barrels of oil and natural gas.[H] Beyond the Antarctic treaties, huge obstacles persist to tapping these resources, like drifting icebergs that could jeopardise offshore platforms. Then there is Antarctica's remoteness, with some mineral deposits found in windswept locations on a continent that is larger than Europe and where winter temperatures hover around minus55 degrees Celsius.[I] But advances in technology might make Antarctica a lot more accessible three decades from now.And even before then, scholars warn, the demand for resources in an energy-hungry world could raise pressure to renegotiate Antarctica's treaties, possibly allowing more commercial endeavours here well before the prohibitions against them expire. The research stations on King George Island offer a glimpse into the long game on this ice-blanketed continent as nations assert themselves, eroding the sway long held by countries like the United States, Britain, Australia and New Zealand.[J]Being stationed in Antarctica involves adapting to life on the planet's driest, windiest and coldest continent, yet each nation manages to make itself at home. Bearded Russian priests offer regular services at the Orthodox church for the 16 or so Russian speakers who spend the winter at the base, largely polar scientists in fields like glaciology and meteorology. Their number climbs to about 40 in the warmer summer months. China has arguably the fastest-growing operations in Antarctica. It opened its fourth station last year and is pressing ahead with plans to build afifth. It is building its second ice-breaking ship and setting up research drilling operations on an ice dome13,422 feet above sea level that is one of the planet's coldest places. Chinese officials say the expansion in Antarctica prioritises scientific research, but they also acknowledge that concerns about "resource security" influence their moves.[K] China's newly renovated Great Wall Station on King George Island makes the Russian and Chilean bases here seem outdated. "We do weather monitoring here and other research," Ning Xu,53, the chief of the Chinese base, said over tea during a fierce blizzard (baofengxuE. in late November. The large base he leads resembles a snowed-in college campus on holiday break, with the capacity to sleep more than 10 times the 13 people who were staying on through the Antarctic winter.Yong Y u, a Chinese microbiologist, showed off the spacious building, with empty desks under an illustrated timeline detailing the rapid growth of China's Antarctic operations since the 1980s. "We now feel equipped to grow," he said.[L] As some countries expand operations in Antarctica, the United States maintains three year-round stations on the continent with more than 1,000 people during the southern hemisphere's summer, including those at the Amundsen-Scott station, built in 1956 at an elevation of 9,301 feet on a plateau at the South Pole. But US researchers quietly complain about budget restraints and having far fewer icebreakers than Russia, limiting the reach of the United States in Antarctica.[M] Scholars warn that Antarctica's political drift could blur the distinction between military and civilian activities long before the continent's treaties come up for renegotiation, especially in parts of Antarctica that are ideal for intercepting (拦截) signals from satellites or retasking satellite systems, potentially enhancing global electronic intelligence operations.[N] Some countries have had a hard time here. Brazil opened a research station in 1984, but it was largely destroyed by a fire that killed two members of the navy in 2012, the same year that a diesel-laden Brazilian barge sank near the base. As if that were not enough, a Brazilian C-130 Hercules military transport plane has remained stranded near the runway of Chile's air base here since it crash-landed in 2014.[O] However, Brazil's stretch of misfortune has created opportunities for China, with a Chinese company winning the $100 million contract in 2015 to rebuild the Brazilian station.[P] Amid all the changes, Antarctica maintains its allure. South Korea opened its second Antarctic research base in 2014, describing it as a way to test robots developed by Korean researchers for use in extreme conditions. With Russia's help, Belarus is preparing to build its first Antarctic base. Colombia said this year that it planned to join other South American nations with bases in Antarctica.[Q]"The old days of the Antarctic being dominated by the interests and wishes of white men from European, Australasian and North American states are over," said Klaus Dodds, a politics scholar at the University of London who specialises in Antarctica. "The reality is that Antarctica is geopolitically contested."36. According to Chinese officials, their activities in Antarctica lay greater emphasis on scientific research.37. Efforts to create one of the world's largest ocean sanctuaries failed because of Russia's obstruction.38. With several monitoring stations operating in Antarctica, Russia is trying hard to counter America'sdominance in the field of worldwide navigational facilities.39. According to geologists' estimates, Antarctica has enormous reserves of oil and natural gas.40. It is estimated that Antarctica boasts of the richest reserves of fresh water on earth.41. The demand for energy resources may compel renegotiation of Antarctica's treaties before their expiration.42. Many countries are racing against each other to increase their business and strategic influence on Antarctica.43. Antarctica's harsh natural conditions constitute huge obstacles to the exploitation of its resources.44. With competition from many countries, Antarctica is no longer dominated by the traditional white nations.45. American scientists complain about lack of sufficient money and equipment for their expansion in Antarctica.Section CDirections:There are 2 passages in this section. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on Answer Sheet 2 with a single line through the centre.Passage OneQuestions 46 to 50 are based on the following passage.Any veteran nicotine addict will testify that fancy packaging plays no role in the decision to keep smoking. So, it is argued, stripping cartons of their branding will trigger no mass movement to quit. But that isn't why the government--under pressure from cancer charities, health workers and the Labour party--has agreed to legislate for standardised packaging. The theory is that smoking should be stripped of any appeal to discourage new generations from starting in the first place. Plain packaging would be another step in the reclassification of cigarettes from inviting consumer products to narcotics (麻醉剂).Naturally, the tobacco industry is violently opposed. No business likes to admit that it sells addictive poison as a lifestyle choice. That is why government has historically intervened, banning advertising, imposing health warnings and punitive ( 惩罚性的) duties. This approach has led over time to a fall in smoking with numbers having roughly halved since the 1970s. Evidence from Australia suggests plain packaging pushes society further along that road. Since tobacco is one of the biggest causes of premature death in the UK, a measure that tames the habit even by a fraction is worth trying. So why has it taken so long? The Department of Health declared its intention to consider the move in November 2010 and consulted through 2012. But the plan was suspended in July 2013. It did not escape notice that a lobbying firm set up by Lynton Crosby, David Cameron's election campaign director, had previously acted for Philip Morris International. (The prime minister denied there was a connection between his new adviser's outside interests and the change in legislative programme.) In November 2013, after an unnecessary round of additional consultation, health minister Jane Ellison said the government was minded to proceed after all. Now we are told Members of Parliament (MPs) will have a free vote before parliament is dissolved in March.Parliament has in fact already authorised the government to tame the tobacco trade. MPs voted overwhelmingly in favour of Labour amendments to the children and families bill last February that included the power to regulate for plain packaging. With sufficient will in Downing Street this would have been done already. But strength of will is the missing ingredient where Mr. Cameron and public health are concerned. His attitude to state intervention has looked confused ever since his bizarre 2006 lament (叹惜) that chocolate oranges placed seductively at supermarket checkouts fueled obesity. The government has moved reluctantly into a sensible public health policy, but with such obvious over-cautiousness that any political credit due belongs to the opposition. Without sustained external pressure it seems certain Mr. Cameron would still be hooked on the interests of big tobacco companies.46. What do chain smokers think of cigarette packaging?A. Fancy packaging can help to engage new smokers.B. It has little to do with the quality or taste of cigarettes.C. Plain packaging discourages non-smokers from taking up smoking.D. It has little impact on their decision whether or not to quit smoking.47. What has the UK government agreed to do concerning tobacco packaging?A. Pass a law to standardise cigarette packaging.B. Rid cigarette cartons of all advertisements.C. Subsidise companies to adopt plain packaging.D. Reclassify cigarettes according to packaging.48. What has happened in Australia where plain packaging is implemented?A. Premature death rates resulting from smoking have declined.B. The number of smokers has dropped more sharply than in the UK.C. The sales of tobacco substitutes have increased considerably.D. Cigarette sales have been falling far more quickly than in the UK.49. Why has it taken so long for the UK government to consider plain packaging?A. Prime Minister Cameron has been reluctant to take action.B. There is strong opposition from veteran nicotine addicts.C. Many Members of Parliament are addicted to smoking.D. Pressure from tobacco manufacturers remains strong.50. What did Cameron say about chocolate oranges at supermarket checkouts?A. They fueled a lot of controversy.B. They attracted a lot of smokers.C. They made more British people obese.D. They had certain ingredients missing.Passage TwoQuestions 51 to 55 are based on the following passage. What a waste of money! In return for an average of ~44,000 of debt, students get an average of only 14 hours of lecture and tutorial time a week in Britain. Annual fees have risen from £1,000 to £9,000 in the last decade, but contact time at university has barely risen at all. And graduating doesn't even provide any guarantee of a decent job : six in ten graduates today are in non-graduate jobs.No wonder it has become fashionable to denounce many universities as little more than elaborate con-tricks (骗术). There's a lot for students to complain about: the repayment threshold for paying back loans will be frozen for five years, meaning that lower-paid graduates have to start repaying their loans; and maintenance grants have been replaced by loans, meaning that students from poorer backgrounds face higher debt than those with wealthier parents.Yet it still pays to go to university. If going to university doesn't work out, students pay very little--if any--of their tuition fees back: you only start repaying when you are earning £21,000 a year.Almost half of graduates--those who go on to earn less--will have a portion of their debt written off. It's not just the lectures and tutorials that are important. Education is the sum of what students teach each other in between lectures and seminars. Students do not merely benefit while at university; studies show- they go on to be healthier and happier than non-graduates, and also far more likely to vote.Whatever your talents, it is extraordinarily difficult to get a leading job in most fields without having been to university. Recruiters circle elite universities like vultures (兀鹰). Many top firms will not even look at applications from those who lack a 2.1, i. e., an upper-second class degree, from an elite university. Students at university also meet those likely to be in leading jobs in the future, forming contacts for life. This might not be right, but school-leavers who fail to acknowledge as much risk making the wrong decision about going to university.Perhaps the reason why so many universities offer their students so little is they know studying at a top university remains a brilliant investment even if you don't learn anything. Studying at university will only become less attractive if employers shift their focus away from where someone went to university--and there is no sign of that happening anytime soon. Schoololeavers may moan, but they have little choice but to embrace university and the student debt that comes with it.51. What is the author's opinion of going to university?A. It is worthwhile after all.B. It is simply a waste of time.C. It is hard to say whether it is good or bad.D. It is too expensive for most young people.52. What does the author say about the employment situation of British university graduates?A. Few of them are satisfied with the jobs they are offered.B. It usually takes a long time for them to find a decent job.C. Graduates from elite universities usually can get decent jobs.D. Most of them take jobs which don't require a college degree.53. What does the author say is important for university students besides classroom instruction?A. Making sure to obtain an upper-second class degree.B. Practical skills they will need in their future careers.C. Interactions among themselves outside the classroom.D. Developing independent and creative thinking abilities.54. What is said to be an advantage of going to university?A. Learning how to take risks in an ever-changing world.B. Meeting people who will be helpful to you in the future.C. Having opportunities of playing a leading role in society.D. Gaining up-to-date knowledge in science and technology.55. What can we infer from the last paragraph?A. It is natural for students to make complaints about university education.B. Few students are willing to bear the burden of debt incurred at university.C. University education is becoming attractive to students who can afford it.D. The prestige of the university influences employers' recruitment decisions.Part Ⅳ Translation (30 minutes)Directions: For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to translate a passage from Chinese into English. My husband was very supportive and helped me to make my decision. He emphasized all of the things I can do around the house, and said he thought I could be a great success in business. After several weeks of job-hunting I found my present job, which is working fora small public relations firm. At first, my husband was very proud of me and would tell his friends, “My clever little wife can run that company she’s working for.”But as his joking remark approached reality, my husband stopped talking to me about my job. I have received several promotions and pay increases, and I am now making more money than he is. I can buy my own clothes and a new car. Because of our combined incomes, my husband and I can do many things that we had always dreamed of doing, but we don't do these things because he is very unhappy. We fight about little things and my husband is very critical of me in front of our friends. For the first time in our marriage, I think there is a possibility that our marriage may come to an end. I love my husband very much, and I don’t want him to feel inferior, but I also love my job. I think I can be a good wife and a working woman, but I don't know how. Can you give me some advice? (阅读理解题)Sometimes, when Tom Krattenmaker and his 16-year-old daughter, Holland, listen to rock music together and talk about pop culture – interests they both enjoy – he recalls his more-distant relationship with his parents when he was a teenager. Today, the generation gap has not disappeared, but it is shrinking in many families. The old authoritarian approach to discipline is giving way to a more equal relationship. Instead of saying “Because I said so, that’s why”, more and more parents are willing to take the “Come, let us reason together” attitude. The result can be a rewarding closeness among family members. Conversations that would not have taken place a generation ago – or that would have been awkward, on subjects such as sex and drugs – now are comfortable and common. These conversations made parents realize that children may have important thoughts or feelings that adults need to be aware of. And parent-child activities, from shopping to sports, involve an easy camaraderie that can continue into adulthood. No wonder greeting cards today carry the message, “To my mother, my best friend.”But family experts caution that the new equality can also have downsides –diminishing respect for parents and overindulgence of the children. Many parents have started making decisions based on what their children want. They focus on making their children happy as opposed to guiding them most appropriately. Also an increase in guilt on the part of busy parents makes them less eager to spend time disciplining. Some parents even worry that if they tell their children no,or impose limits on them, it will hurt the children’s self-esteem.Yet, parents who don’t set rules risk becoming ‘so powerless in their own homes that they feel out of control and sometimes afraid,’ cautions Dennis Lowe, a professor at Pepperdine University in California. He believes that parents – in their eagerness to keep the peace and avoid arguments – miss an opportunity to teach children how to resolve conflicts, rather than simply avoiding them.11. ( 单选题 ) The author is primarily concerned with ________. (本题0.0分)A、teenagers’ defiant behaviorsB、 various influences upon the developing teenagersC、 the conflicts between parents and teensD、parents’ problems in middle adulthood学生答案:C标准答案:C解析:得分:016. (阅读理解题)Many parents are overwhelmed by the responsibilities that accompany child-rearing. Often, parents believe they alone are responsible for how their children turn out. Many parents believe that if they don’t do the right things, their children won’t become well-adjusted adults. This misconception may cause the normal struggles that occur between parents and teens to take on exaggerated importance. Parents need to understand that although they are very important in their child’s life, other influences also are important. Peers, teachers, counselors and popular public figures also influence the developing teenager. The teen’s growth toward independence becomes an issue when viewed by teens or parents as a struggle for control. For many parents, the method used to ensure that a child will grow up ‘right’ is to maintain control over many aspects of the child’s life.Such parents may choose their children’s clothes, friends, hobbies and courses of study. As the children grow older, they begin to realize they can never grow into adults without assuming control of their own lives. Therefore, they begin to fight for control. They argue with their parents, defy them and demand control, which can lead to ongoing family struggles. For these children, the road to adulthood is difficult because both parents and children risk losing the closeness they once enjoyed. Both parents and teens can feel rejected and hurt by the behavior that threatens their relationships. Parents also are concerned about their children’s ability to care for themselves and make good decisions. To some parents, defiant behavior is proof they must have failed as parents. The struggle is doubly stressful when each person cares so deeply about the other. Many professionals who work with parents and teens believe that parents’ own issuesalso contribute to the problems with teens. Often, the parents of teens are middle-aged. They may experience unrest, discontent, change and self-evaluation during middle adulthood. For some middle-aged parents, the fact their children will soon be adults may be an unpleasant reminder that they, too, are aging. These middle-aged parents may try to keep their children dependent, despite the fact that their children are getting older and more independent.17. ( 单选题 ) He said, “Time is running short. (本题0.0分)A、 the author works at a TV stationB、 more and more women choose to stay at home to look after their kidsC、 in more and more families the wife is earning more than the husbandD、 many men are no longer given the opportunity to stay at home学生答案:C标准答案:C解析:得分:036. (阅读理解题)Once in a television interview, I was chatting with the host about stay-at-home fathers. I made the point that one reason we’re seeing more stay-at-home dads may be that it’s no longer a given that a man makes more money than his wife. Many families now take earning power into account when deciding which parent will stay home.At that point, one of the male crew members commented, “It should be the betterparent who stays home.” A lot of guys say things like that. Usually it’s code for, “My wife(read: any woman)is the better parent.”I was a stay-at-home father for eight years, so his declaration made me bristle. It implied that our family’s choice could only have been correct if 1 was a “better”parent than my wife.I think men shoot themselves in the foot with this kind of thinking. When I began staying home my wife was the “better” parent: She had spent more time with Ry, could read him better and calm him more quickly. And given a choice, he’d have picked her over me. But as she was the more employable one, my wife went out to work and I looked after our son.Know what? Because of the increased time I spent with him, I soon knew Ry well, understood what he needed and could look after him more or 1ess as well as my wife could. Actually, the experience helped me unlock one of the world’s great secrets: Women are good at looking after children because they do it. It’s not because of any innate female aptitude----which I think is mostly learned anyway. It’s because they put in the time and attention required to become good at the job.Women obviously get a biological head start from giving birth and nursing. But over the long term experience is more important. When I got the experience myself, I was good, too. As good? I don’t know. Who cares? Children are not made of glass. Other people are capable of looking after them besides Mom.37. ( 单选题 ) The policeman _______ the prisoners not to play any tricks.
