Every week they met and their conversation usually centered on all the things they were going to achieve. This particular Saturday when they met, WHEN sensed that IF was not in a great mood. WHEN questioned IF, “What‟s wrong with you? You don‟t seem your usual cheery self?”IF looked at WHEN and replied, “I just don‟t feel I am making any progress. Last week I saw a course and wanted to take if only I had the time to take it.” WHEN knew exactly how IF felt. “I too saw a course and I am going to register when I get money.” Said WHEN, “What about that new job you were going to apply for? You were so excited about it last week.” IF suggested, “If my computer didn‟t break down last week, I would have applied. So I could not type my resume.”“Don‟t worry about it, when you are ready another job will come through. I have been thinking about looking for another job too, but I will wait and when the weather gets nicer I will look then.” WHEN then went on to tell IF about his week, hoping that it would cheer him up a bit.The man at the next table couldn‟t help overhearing WHEN and IF. “Excuse me gentlemen,” the man said. Surprised, IF and WHEN both looked at the man. The man continued, “I‟m sorry, but I couldn‟t help hearing your conversation. I think I know how you could solve your problems.” Curious, IF asked the gentleman, “How do you think you can solve our problems?” The gentleman smiled and said, “You only need to listen to yourselves. It reminds me of an old proverb: … If and When were planted, and Nothing grew‟.” The gentleman went on, “Just start doing, take action, and stop talking about …if and when‟.”IF and WHEN suddenly realized that what the gentleman had said was so true. Both of them were guilty of thinking and living their life for the “ifs and whens”. The gentleman left and their conversation changed. They made up their mind that when they met for lunch next week, there would be no “ifs and whens”; they would only talk about what they accomplished! Soon another week came.1. It occurred at first that I did not recognize the handwriting, and then I realized whose it must be. I finally became aware of the fact that I had been working with this colleague for at least a year, maybe two, and yet I did not recognize her handwriting at that point. It was a very important event in the computerization of life—a sign that the informal. Friendlycommunication of people working together in an office had changed from notes in pen to instant messages and emails. There was a time when our workdays were filled with little letters, and we recognized one another‟s handwriting the way we knew voices or faces. As a chil d visiting my father‟s office, I was pleased to recognize, in little notes on the desks of his staff, the same handwriting I would see at home in the notes he would leave on the fridge—except that those notes w ere signed “dad” instead of “RFW”.All this has been on my mind because of the talk about The Rise and Fall of Handwriting, a book by Florey. Sire shows in her book a deep concern about the fall of handwriting and the failure of schools to teach children to write well, but many others argue that people in a digital age can‟t be expected to learn to hold a pen.I don‟t buy it.I don‟t want to see anyone cut off from the expressive, personal associations that a pen still promotes better than a digital keyboard does. For many a biographer, part of really getting to know their subjects is learning to read their handwriting. What some people advocate is teaching one of the many attractive handwritings based on the handwriting of 16th-century Italy. That may sound impossibly grand—as if they want kids to learn to draw by copying classical paintings. However, they have worked in many school systems.1. Why was the author surprised at not recognizing his colleague‟s handwriting?A. He had worked with his colleague long enough.B. His colleague‟s handwriting was so beautiful.C. His colleague‟s handwriting was so terrible.D. He still had a 1ot of work to do.2. People working together in an office used to ________.A. talk more about handwritingB. take more notes on workdaysC. know better one another‟s han dwritingD. communicate better with one another3. The author‟s father wrote notes in pen ________.A. to both his family and his staffB. to his family in small lettersC. to his family on the fridgeD. to his staff on the desk4. According to the author, handwritten notes ________.A. are harder to teach in schoolsB. attract more attentionC. are used only between friendsD. carry more message5. We can learn from the passage that the author ________.A. thinks it impossible to teach handwritingB. does not want to lose handwritingC. puts the blame on the computerD. does not agree with FloreyKeys: 1.A 2.C 3.A 4.D 5.BCThe average college student in America spent about seven hundred dollars on textbooks last year. The National Association of College Stores reported more than five billion dollars in sales of textbooks and course materials.Association spokesman says electronic textbooks now cover just two to three percent of sales. But he says that is expected to reach ten to fifteen percent by 2012.Online versions are now available for most popular college textbooks. E-textbooks can cost half the price of a new print textbook. But students usually lose access after the end of the term. And the books cannot be loaded on more than one device,so they are not easy to share. So what do students think of e-textbooks?Earlier this year Administrators at Missouri State University tested them with five hundred students in twenty classes. The University provides laptop computers to all seven thousand of its full-time students. It does not require students to buy their textbooks. They rent them to save money. The school aims to save even more by moving to e-textbooks.The students in the survey reported that downloading the books from the Internet was easy. They liked the idea of carrying lighter backpacks And fifty-six percent said they were better able to find information. But most found that using e-textbooks did not change their study habits. And sixty percent felt they read more when they were reading on paper. In all, almost half the students said they still liked paper textbooks better. But the survey found that cost could be a big influence. Fifty-five percent said they would choose e-textbooks if using them meant their textbook rental fee would not increase.Roger V on Holzen heads the Center for Information Technology in Education. He tells us that administrators are disappointed with the e-textbooks now available because the majority are not interactive(交互的).He thinks growth will come when more digital books include video, activities, games and other ways to interact with the information. But for now, most of the books are just words on a screen.1.The underlined word “them” in the fourth paragraph refers to________.A.university students B.textbooks and course materialsC.lap top computers D.e-text books2.We can learn from the passage that________.A.it is against law to share e-textbooks among studentsB.students in Missouri State University can't afford to buy textbooksC.e-textbooks will not be available when the term is overD.most students refuse e-textbooks though they are cheap3.Missouri State University________.A.requires students to buy both laptop computers and textbooksB.makes a lot of money by renting textbooks to studentsC.encourages students to use the e-textbooks to save moneyD.forbids the use of ordinary textbooks to lighten their backpacks4.The survey made by Missouri State University shows that________.A.most popular college textbooks are still hard to downloadB.some students haven't got used to the new reading habitsC.the computer costs affect the popularity of e-textbooks greatlyD.e-textbooks caused a sharp increase in students' rental fee5.What Roger V on Holzen really means is that________.A.e-textbooks will disappear soon because they are not interactiveB.administrators think poorly of e-textbooksC.it is not the right time to put forward e-textbooksD.e-textbooks have a bright future if they get more interactiveDCCBDDWhen the Farnsworth family moved to their new farm in 1919, eleven-year-old Philo was surprised to find it wired for electricity. This unusual circumstance contributed to his fate — to become an important inventor of the twentieth century.By thirteen, Farnsworth had become a self-taught electrical engineer. He was able to fix the farm’s generator(发电机)when none of the adults could. In 1922, he read an article about a new idea of John Baird, a Scottish scientist, who had been working with the cathode ray tube (阴极射线管) for the transmission of electronic pictures and wanted to attempt it himself.Farnsworth studied everything he could find on the subject. Although many older engineers with money backers were already developing television, Farnsworth made a bold decision — he was going to perfect a working model of it before anybody else.In college, Farnsworth continued his research with cathode ray and vacuum tubes, but the death of his father, the only money maker in the family, forced him to give up this research and find a job. His first job was for George Everson, with whom Farnsworth discussed his dream of television. While acknowledging the achievements of those who came before, Farnsworth thought that he could get closer. Everson agreed to risk $6,000 for the research.Backers came in 1927 to see the first American television, one year after Baird‟s. They were astonished to see the image of a single white line resolve itself on the screen before them, and agreed that this new invention was worth putting money into.In 1930, Farnsworth won a patent (专利权) for his all-electronic TV. By the time he died, he had earned over 300 American and foreign patents for electronic and mechanical devices.1. They do very little for others and rarely have much fun.I heard of one man who was considered by the townspeople to the both rich and simple. His austerities(节约) earned him the reputation of a miser. When he died, everyone expected to find a lot of money in his home. But all they found were some coins. It came out that he had used most of his money to help put needy young students through college. And the coins filled his pockets as he walked down the busy streets looking for cars whose parking meters had run out. When he found one, he would drop in a coin. One of his neighbors commented, …That explains why he looked so happy!”Of course! People who are willing to help others will always be happy. When I lived in Denver, I decided to do the same thing. So whenever I parked on a busy street I noticed the parking meters around me. If one had run out, I would put in a coin. Then I learned something disturbing. It is illegal to do that in Denver! Once I learned that I was breaking the law, I quit looking for meters to feed. And I lost an extra bit of joy.I have moved away from Denver now and I just might go back to feed an expired(到期的) meter from time to time. I don‟t know how the city council feels about my little gifts to drivers, but I know how it feels to be unavoidably late returning to a parked car, and worrying about whether the meter has run out. And if I have to look over my shoulder before I put in a coin, then somehow I think that may be more fun! It can be a game: do something good and don‟t get caught!Everyone is allowed to play.21. People ready to help others will always be _______.A. miserableB. isolatedC. austereD. happy22. As for the man, which of the following is right?A. What do the underlined words “ a game” refer to?A. To take part in a competition.B. To help others secretly.C. To do a word puzzle.D. To play a game25. From the passage, we can infer _________.A. Whenever the writer goes, he if fond of playing games.B. If the parking meters have run out, the owner of the car is likely to be fined.C. Playing a game on the busy street is very funny.D. If someone does something good, perhaps he will get caught.DCBBBFHomework. The word alone causes complaints from kids of all ages. It‟s often accompanied by the dull sound of an overloaded schoolbag hitting the floor. A heavy helping of homework is, for many students, a headache. But it doesn‟t have to be thatway. There‟s no magic formula for getting good grades on homework. But there are some basic things that students can do to raise their grades. Here are several homework tips from an experienced teacher.1. Study in a clean and well-lighted place.Doing your homework while lying on your bed by the light of the TV is probably not the best way to go.2. Limit distractions.Listening to your iPod and sending instant messages to 14 different people while you‟re trying to study isn‟t the method for success.3. Organize your time.Set aside a certain amount of time for homework every night. If you have nothing due the next day, you can work on long-term projects or read a book. Remember “delay=bad”.4. Keep track of assignments. The best way to do this is to use a homework planner. This planner should include not only your day-to-day assignments, but also a schedule for longer-term projects. In other words, if you have a research paper due in three weeks, you should write down when you need to have all your books and materials, when your notes should be done, when the first draft should be completed, etc. This prevents those nasty surprises when you suddenly have to write a whole paper in one evening.5. Ask, ask, ask. It‟s important to ask the teacher at least one question each week but asking to going to the bathroom doesn‟t count. You can hand in your paper and have the teacher check it over. This makes a big difference in making a student-teacher connection.6. Check your work.Everyone makes mistakes, but it‟s better if you catch them rather than your teacher. Take the time to go over your work. And remember, four eyes are better than two, so get a parent to remember it as well.26. Which of the following is TRUE?A. It‟s a good way to do your homework while lying on your bed.B. You can enjoy music as you do your homework.C. There is no need to go over your homework.D. If one day you haven‟t homework to do, you can read a book.27. We learn from the last paragraph but one that _________.A. you‟d better ask the teacher a question every dayB. “Shall I go to the bathroom?” is a good questionC. You can communicate with your teacher after he checked your paperD. the more questions you ask, the better result you will get28. Who is most likely to benefit from the passage?A. Teachers.B. Parents.C. Students.D. Researchers.29. What do we learn about “homework”?A. Generally speaking, students can finish their homework comfortably.B. Many students can accept their homework happily.C. Kids of all ages are unwilling to do the homework.D. It is easy for students to get good grades on homework.30. What‟s the best title of the passage?A. Check your homework.B. tips for improving your homework grades.C. Organize your time.D. Homework.DCCCB第二部分:信息匹配(共1篇,5小题,分值:10分)Here are five letters from readers listed in 1-5. All the greetings and signatures are left out. Suppose you are a secretary of the magazine CR (Crazy English Reader), for each one find a suitable reply from A-F. Mark the correct letter (A-F) on your answer sheet. There is one extra reply which you don‟t need to use.1. I am a reader of CR. Recently I found students translate some articles of CR. I appreciate your offering an opportunity to us beginners to practise using English. So I want to ask how they can obtain these articles and translated them for you, and what qualities you require. Thank you.2. I love your Crazy English Reader magazine! It provides valuable data for work in our English teaching. My wife and I are teaching Conversational English so I‟ve been giving you a bit of a plug at our middle school. I told the students to “get a copy!” It‟s good stuff! Fantastic!3. I‟m one of Yao‟s fans from Guangzhou. I have read the Yao Ming articles in No.7 Crazy English Reader. I want to know his correspondence address and the official website. Could you please tell me? Thank you very much indeed.4. First of all, I must say thank you very much to all the CE Reader editors who gave us a really good English magazine. Secondly, I want to give you a piece of advice. In each passage, you gave us some new words with their Chinese translation. However, as far as my knowledge, I think you should give us not only the Chinese meaning but also the English meaning so as to know the words more accurately. Thank you!5. I am an editor of the English Monthly of our school. I have a question that is how to say the position of the paper e.g. 总编,责任编辑and so on. I hope you can help me to tell me the word in English. The more the better. Thank you so much! I love the book very much. Now, I do this work, I need study more information about this work, if you have time, please email me. Thank you.A.Thank you for your suggestion. We may try that in some future issues of CR. I think the best way to improve your reading vocabulary is to be able to guess the meaning of the word from the other words around it. Also, if you have an English dictionary, it‟s good to look up the words and then mark them down in a notebook and review them later on. Then if you really want to learn how to use the words, try using them in conversation or in writing. Hope this helps.B.T he best way for you to learn the different positions in a newspaper or magazine is to get a copy of an all-English magazine or newspaper and then copy down the different positions. There are also titles such as Managing Editor, reporter, Copy Editor, Photo Editor and Layout Editor. I hope this helps. If you have some more specific questions, you can send them to me and I‟ll try to answer.C.The best way to reach Yao directly is through his home team, the Shanghai Sharks. You can write him at 2570 Xietu Road, Shanghai. For more information on Yao, you can look at the sports section in sina. com. I hope this helps. Another idea is that you can try to write Yao while he‟s living and playing in Houston. You can try to reach Yao in the US at: Yao MingCompaq Centre 10 Houston, TX 77046D.Thank you for being such a careful reader of CR. Yes, you‟re right we made a mistake in the writing of that Chinese word. Each issue we try to read very carefully each article and its translation to make sure there are no mistakes, but unfortunately a few mistakes always get by.But you encourage us to keep improving, so thank you.E.Yes, we do have several students who help us translate some of the articles in our magazine. We contact these translators directly after interviewing their translation work. Afterwards we assign the articles to them for translation. If you are interested in being one of our translators you can send us some information about yourself and a sample of your translation work. F.Thank you for helping us to promote CR. We‟re glad it‟s helpful to your students. We always try to include articles that reflect real life. It‟s our hope that CR will not only improve student‟s English but also open up a different worldview.EFCAB第三部分:任务型写作(共1篇,分值:30分)With the possible exception of another world war, a giant planet, or an incurable disease, global warming may be the largest danger to our planet. For decades human factories and cars have sent billions of tons of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, and the climate has begun to show some signs of warming. If steps are not taken soon to reduce the amount of carbon dioxide sent into the atmosphere, the result could terribly affect human life. We have already seen growing destruction, such as drought and death in Sudan, flooding in Asia, bush fires in Indonesia, and fierce winter storms in central Europe. The Republic of Maldives is barely above sea level. Its 250,000 citizens are scattered across 1,200 islands in the Indian Ocean. A strong typhoon could spell the end for the entire country, as could continue rising sea levels. The entire population would have to be moved away as the country disappears under the sea.The greenhouse effect is a naturally occurring phenomenon that keeps our planet at a comfortable temperature averaging 60℉. Since the mid-nineteenth century, however, carbon dioxide in the atmosphere has increased nearly 30% because of the increased use of fossil fuels to run cars, heat homes and power factories. Without controlling, the amount of carbon-dioxide by 2100 may increase by 30%--150% and could lift the average global temperature by up to 2.5℉in the next 50 years.【写作内容】1.
