Ernest Hemingway
1899-1961, American novelist and short-story writer, b. Oak Park, Ill. one
of the great American writers of the 20th cent.
The son of a country doctor, Hemingway worked as a reporter for the
Kansas City Star after graduating from high school in 1917.
During World War I he served as an ambulance driver in France and in the
Italian infantry and was wounded just before his 19th birthday. Later, while
working in Paris as a correspondent for the Toronto Star, he became involved
with the expatriate literary and artistic circle surrounding Gertrude Stein.
During the Spanish Civil War, Hemingway served as a correspondent on
the loyalist side. He fought in World War II and then settled in Cuba in 1945. In
1954, Hemingway was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature.
After his expulsion from Cuba by the Castro regime, he moved to Idaho.

海明威在创作期间的表现异常独特,因为作家在创作期间一般都是坐在椅子上进行创作。然而海明威却不这样,他几乎每次都是站着进行创作。有人问海明威为什么他要选择这样的创作方式,而海明威的回答是:“站着会让自己变得更容易疲劳,而疲劳便会督促自己挑精华部分写,而不需要写一些不必要的话语。这样作品的含金量就会更高。”除了站着写作之外,海明威还经常喜欢在冬天进行创作,尤其是那种格外寒冷的天气,在这样寒冷的天气海明威也不会穿很厚的衣服,他依旧穿那种很单薄的衣服在寒冷的环境中创作。这也是为了追求作品的含金量。
在二战期间,美国的一位将领在拍卖会上获得了两箱的威士忌酒,而此时海明威也在场,他平时就喜欢喝酒,看到将领得到这么多的酒便主动提出要花钱买六瓶酒。可是将领并没有答应海明威的这一请求,之后好不容易答应了,但条件是要海明威给他上六节课才能换得酒。海明威答应了,可是在第六堂课还没有开始讲的时候,海明威就有急事要离开,但是最后在机场的时候还是把这堂课讲完了。将领将装了六瓶酒的箱子给了海明威,但是海明威表示要检查一下,果然,这一检查发现将领给的只是茶叶罢了。
