But there was one thing that the boy was good at and it was all on account of the length of his legs.He could jump.Freddie was the best jumper in school. Not only could he leap the furthest but also the highest. At breaktimes,he entertained the little ones by leaping over the school wall into Mrs Hobson’s garden and then rapidly jumping back. She had been up to see the head teacher several times because somebody had been crushing her vegetables. It was badgers(獾),Freddie suggested, when quizzed by Miss Harpy—definitely badgers;no doubt about it.His dad had terrible problems with badgers.Only last week he had lost two rows of carrots.Freddie had woken one night and heard them tearing through the garden,a whole herd of them. They rooted up the lawn and dug up the vegetables.Terrible things, badgers. All the other children nodded their heads wisely. There was a moment’s pause in Class Three as everyone thought about the dreadful damage that badgers could do.24.What do we know about Grandma Pugh?A.She was present at the birth of baby Freddie.B.She was unwilling to listen to the ideas of others.C.She was a figure of great importance in the family.D.She valued physical appearance over all other things.25.Why did Freddie jump over the school wall?A.To annoy his teacher.B.To escape from school.C.To amuse his schoolmates.D.To damage Mrs Hobson’s vegetables.26.Which of the following best describes Freddie’s physical appearance?A. B. C. D.27.Why does Freddie talk about badgers in the final paragraph?A.To explain the cause of the damage.B.To warn the class about their danger.C.To describe what happened to his father’s garden.D.To make up an excuse for the cause of the damage.CPunks,Ravers,Mods and Teddy Boys. No,these aren’t some hot new bands, but the names of a number of British youth subcultures from the last 70years.Youth Club,a UK non-profit organization, released a book earlier this year celebrating many different subcultures from throughout Britain’s recent history.“A catalyst (催化剂)for creativity on the worldwide stage,British youth culture movements from the Teddy Boys of the 1950s to the Grime Scene of the 2000s continue to play a pioneering role in music, fashion and creativity across the globe,”it wrote on its website. These subcultures were traditionally a way for young people to show their personalities to others.Walking around London in the 1970s would have meant seeing dozens of young “punks”—people dressed in ripped denim, leather jackets, body piercings and with brightly-dyed hair on the streets. And in the 90s,“ravers”were young people who threw all-night parties in abandoned buildings or car parks. So,what was the reason behind these subcultures?“On both sides of the Atlantic, more and more young disappointed teenagers were looking for an escape from the boredom and restrictions of society,”wrote Ian Youngs,BBC entertainment reporter.“Unemployment, racial tensions and social changes added fuel to their fires.”Youth subcultures have almost disappeared in the West. Some experts believe the reason for this is the instant and low-priced availability of music and clothing in the Internet age.“Fashion and music, they’re much cheaper and they’re much faster today,”Ruth Adams,a culture lecturer at King’s College London told The Guardian .“When I was a teenager, you had to stick to one type of music or fashion, because otherwise it cost more money. Now,it’s all a bit vaguer,”she said, believing that it’s harder to figure out someone’s personality or music tastes nowadays just by looking at them.Despite this,Adams believes that today’s young people are still finding their own way to express themselves, but in a more modern way.“It’s certainly happening online,”she said.“It’s a lot easier to use personas (伪装)online just by showcasing certain types of mysterious knowledge.”28.What do we know about British youth subcultures?A.They date back to the1970s.B.They were started by Youth Club.C.They are contemporary culture movements.D.They were a way for youths to express themselves.29.What contributed to the appearance of these youth subcultures?A.The easy access to music and clothing.B.Young people’s desire for freedom and fun.C.The political pressure young people suffered.D.Young people’s longing for fame and wealth.30.Which of the following would Ruth Adams probably agree with?A.Young people are less willing to express themselves.B.Young people are less interested in music and fashion.C.Music and fashion develop too fast for young people to follow.D.The Internet makes it harder to tell the young’s real personalities.31.What’s the author’s attitude toward subcultures?A.Objective.B.Negative.C.Doubtful.D.Supportive.DEvery year migratory(迁徙的)bats travel from Mexico to Bracken Cave, where they spend the summer consuming insects that would otherwise hungrily eat common food crops. But the bats have been showing up far earlier than they did two decades ago.In a study, scientists at Rothamsted Research,an agricultural laboratory in England, used radar data from160U.S.weather stations to analyze activity in the Texas bat colony from1995through2017. They discovered the creatures were leaving their winter quarters in Mexico earlier and reproducing sooner. They were also astonished to find increasing numbers of bats overwintering(过冬)at Bracken Cave instead of heading back to their cold weather quarters in Mexico.Overwintering is a sign that warmer temperatures change the bats’annual rhythms,Rothamsted biologist Phillip Stepanian says.A separate study of migratory bats in Indiana, published last year, found that temperature variations affected arrival and departure times—likewise hinting at the potential influence of climate change.Joy O’Keefe,a biology professor at Indiana State University and co-author of that study, says early arrival at their summer habitats could expose these bats to cold snaps(寒流),and they could freeze to death.Joy O’Keefe and her colleagues also found that changing bat migration times can also clash with rainfall patterns. Many insects that bats eat breed in seasonal lakes and puddles. If the bats arrive too early to benefit from summer rainfall and the resulting abundance of insects, they may struggle to feed their pups(幼崽)or skip reproduction altogether,O’Keefe says. She fears this shift could cause Midwestern bats to decrease toward extinction, which would be bad news for humans.“Declines in bat populations could have severe effects for crop success,”she says, adding that bats also“control significant disease vectors, such as mosquitoes.”However, scientists are not certain that climate change alone is causing the Bracken Cave bat colony to migrate earlier. They have found a direct link between seasonal temperatures and bird migration, but bats are also influenced by factors such as changes in wind speed and direction. And there are other complications.“Bats are mysterious little animals that move mostly at night and aredifficult to observe and track,”Stepanian says.“We have this conceptual picture of what might be happening, but really tying it to the cause is the next step.”32.Scientists at Rothamsted Research found that_________.A.bats prefer colder weatherB.bats delay their reproductionC.warming affects bat migrationD.radar can be used to observe bats33.Joy O’Keefe discovered that_________.A.bats are used to living in rainfall seasonsB.bats’earlier migration might harm farmingC.insects’reproduction helps to spread diseaseD.insects shortage makes bats reproduce earlier34.What does the last paragraph want to tell us?A.Wind speed and direction affect bats.B.It is difficult to observe and track bats.C.Climate change makes bats migrate earlier.D.Further research on the cause is necessary.35.What is the best title for the passage?A.Bats’habitatsB.Endangered batsC.Bats’scheduleD.Bats,our good friends第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

Do you eat it? It seems that you shouldn't, for many reasons. including its influence on your studies.Scientists have long known that eating late at night can make us gain weight. But now a new study has shown that late-night eating can also have a bad influence on our brains ---it might hurt our ability to learn new things and store memories.“We believe that late-night eating may affect(影响)our learning by influencing the parts of the brain that control learning and memory,”Dawn Loh. PhD, a project scientist at the University of California, Los Angeles, said. "We believe the timing of when we eat is the main cause of the damaged (受损的)memory.”For the study, the researchers looked at mice with strict feeding plans. For two weeks, the mice were either allowed to eat during the time when they are usually the most active, or during the time when they usually sleep. The mice received the same amount of sleep and calories. Then the researchers tested the brains of the mice. In one test, the researchers tried to find out whether the mice could remember that a room was connected an electric shock (电击)after24 hours had gone by.The researchers noticed that, when the mice were put in the room again, those mice that ate when they should sleep were less likely to get scared than those mice that ate during usual hours. "Come as soon as you can," cried my mother.I wanted to hurry to her at once. But my husband, Larry, and I were packing to move from New York to Seattle. Our house was in total mess. Supper dishes sat on the kitchen table. Toys lay everywhere. I purposelessly picked things up and put them down. Mother's crying went through my head again and again.Larry called some friends to tell them what happened. Someone asked to speak to me. "If there's anything I can do, let me know." But I didn't know what to ask for.Suddenly, the doorbell rang. It was Emerson. He and his wife Donna lived in the block nearby."I've come to clean your shoes," he said.I asked him to repeat."Donna had to stay with the baby," he said, "but we want to help you. I remember when my father died, it took me hours to clean our shoes for the funeral(葬礼). Give me all your shoes."I gathered all our dirty shoes to the kitchen. Emerson got to work right away. Watching him devoting himself to one task helped me pull my own thoughts into order. I told myself to wash clothes first. Then, Larry and I bathed the children and put them to bed. One job after another. When we returned to clear the dishes, Emerson had left. All our shoes stood in a line against the wall, clean, shining. I couldn't help crying. Early next morning, we left for the airport with all the jobs done. Now whenever I hear of a friend who's lost a loved one, I no longer call with the polite offer, "If there's anything I can do..." Instead I try to think of one specific task that suits that man's need, like looking after friend's young children, taking the dog to the boarding kennel, orhouse-sitting during the funeral. It sells its products by word of mouth. In this way, they can save money and keep costs down, which makes their products cheaper for customers."Word-of-mouth advertising" happens when one person tells another about a good experience with a product or service. That next person then tells another friend, family member, or colleague(同事). And so a chain of information is created.Usually, advertisers talk about how good their product is. Although they say things like, "Studies show that our product is the best." or "Everyone loves this product," It can sound unconvincing. It's much more believable to hear about a product from a family, member or friend who has used it and liked it. Our loved ones' ideas are very important to us, so we often listen to their advice about a product.Word-of-mouth advertising has other advantages, too. It's cost-effective(有效的) (after all, it's free) and a company doesn't have to create a complex(复杂的)business plan to do it. Here is some advice for small businesses about word-of-mouth advertising.Be prepared to talk about your company at any time. You never know who you will meet. Always carry business cards.Only say good things about your company. Don't say bad things about your competition. Help other companies by recommending people to them.
