职称英语考试综合类(C级)真题及答案6第三篇Political SpinsLast week,US White House spokesman Tony Snow sent journalists digging for their dictionaries. He called recent criticism by the former President Bill Clinton“chutzpah”(大胆放肆).With just one sentence,Snow managed to make headlines,a joke and a defense of.President George W Bush.Interestingly, this is how battles are fought and won in US politics—with carefully-worded one—liners(一行字幕新闻)made for TV which often lack substance and clarity(清晰度).“The amount of informat ion that candidates attempt to communicate to people is actually geeing smaller and smaller,”said Mark Smith,a political science professor at Cedarville University. This has been accompanied by a changing media environment,Smith said.In 1 968,the average TV or radio sound bite(演讲中的句子或短语)was 48seconds,according to Smith. In 1996,the average sound bite had shrunk(缩短)to 8 seconds. Thus, politicians wanting publicity try to make their public communication as quotable as possible.Campaigning politicians also use 30-second TV ads and clever campaign slogans(口号)to boost their messages.Republican presidential candidate John McCain rides to campaign stops in a bus named the” Straight-Talk Express”.McCain hopes the name will convince voters he plans to tell people the troth-whether it’s in fashion or not.Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton,on the other hand, has chosen the campaign slogan“Let the conversation begin”.She hopes it will help her appear open-minded and friendly. But one-liners,TV ads and campaign slogans all have a single key ingredient:something commonly called political“spin”.Brooks Jackson,a former journalist andthe current director of the non—partisan(无党派的)website Fact Check.org,calls spin” just a polite word for deception(欺骗).”“I do believe that very often politicians believe their own spin,”said Jackson.“Strong partisans suffer from a universal human tendency:They ignore the evidence that would force them into the uncomfortable position of having to change their minds and admit that they were wrong。
02年职称英语考试综合类(C级)试题及答案6第三篇A Thirsty WorldThe world is not only hungry,it is also thirsty for water. This may seem strange to you, since nearly 75% of the earth’s surface is covered with water. But about 97% of this huge amount is sea-water,or salt water.Man can only drink and use the other 3% -the fresh water that comes from rives, lakes, underground, and other sources. And we cannot even use all of that, because some of it is in the form of icebergs(冰山)and glaciers(冰山).Even worse, some of it has been polluted. At the moment, this small amount of fresh water is still enough for us . However, our for water is increasing rapidly.Only if we take steps to deal with this problem now can we avoid a severe worldwide water shonage 1ateron.A limited water supply would have a bad effect on agriculture and industry. In addition to stopping wasting our precious water, one useful step we should dtake is to develop ways of reusing it.Experiments have already been done in this field ,but donly on a small scale.Today,in most large cities, water is used only once and it eventually returns to the sea or runs into underground storage tanks,But it is possible to pipe water that has been used to a purifying(净化)plant,There it can be filtered (过滤)and treated with chemicals so that it can be used again just as if it were fresh from a spring. But even if every large city purified and reused its water,we sill would not have enough.Where could we turn next? To the oceans! All we’d have to do to make use of the vast amount of sea-water is - remove the salt. This salt- removing process is already in use in many parts of the world. So if we dtake all these steps,we’ll be in no danger of drying up!41 The phrase”the world”in the first line of the passage refers toA “you”.B “man”.C “woman”.D “they”.42 What percentage of the earth’s water can man actually use at present?A Less than 3 per cent.B Nearly 75 per cent.C About 97 per cent.D Exactly3 per cent.43According to the passage we can avoid a worldwide water shortage in the future byA increasing rainfall.B cutting down our consumption of water.C reusing water and utmzing sea-waterl.D reducing the number of factories producing steel.44 Which of the following starements, according to the passage,is NOT true?A A 1imited water supply will affect industrial production.B Purified water is not exactly as fresh as spring water.C Every lagge city purifies and reusesits water.D Oceans are the largest water source.45 According to the passage,sea-water can be turned into fresh water byA heating it up.B treating it with chemicals.C drying it up.D taking salt out of it.。

5 million people worldwide every year. In the US alone, about 440,000 people die each year from tobacco-related illnesses; about one-third of all cancers in the US are caused by tobacco use. If current trends continue, WHO estimates, by 2025 tobacco will kill 10 million people each year.
