必修4 Unit 5 Theme parks李仕才一、阅读理解In the tiny village of Angelica, New York, the post office is more than a place to get mail or send packages. There you'll find the heart of this lovely community. It’s where villagers meet and greet friends. When Angelica's post office was threatened with being closed in the 1980s,a villager,Pat, came up with a plan to save it. “At Christmas time I would hear on the news about towns named Snow or Bethlehem having celebrations," says Pat,“Why couldn't we do the same thing with Angelica?”Pat, who is an artist, created a postal cancellation (邮戳) design featuring an Angelica angel. She drew her angels in a traditional fashion and submitted her suggestion to the U.S. Postal Service。

Two of the saddest words in the English language are “if only”. I live my life with the goal of never having to say those words, because they convey regret, lost opportunities, mistakes, and disappointment. My father is famous in our family for saying, “T ake the extra minute to do it right.”I always try to live by the “extra minute”rule. When my children were young and likely to cause accidents, I always thought about what I could do to avoid an “if only ”moment, whether it was something minor like moving a cup full of hot coffee away from the edge of a computer, or something that required a little more work such as taping padding (衬垫) onto the sharp corners of a glass coffee table.I don’t only avoid those “if only”moments when it comes to safety. It’s equally important to avoid “if only”in our personal relationships. We all know people who lost a loved one and regretted that they had foregone an opportunity to say “I love you”or “I forgive you”. When my father announced he was going to the eye doctor across from my office on Good Friday, I told him that it was a holiday for my company and I wouldn’t be there. But then I thought about the fact that he’s 84 years old and I realized that I shouldn’t give up an opportunity to see him. I called him and told him I had decided to go to work on my day off after all.I know there will still be occasions when I have to say “if only”about something, but my life is definitely better because of my policy of doing everything possible toavoid that eventuality(可能发生的事). And even though it takes an extra minute to do something right, or it occasionally takes an hour or two in my busy schedule to make a personal connection, I know that I’m doing the right thing. I’m buying myself peace of mind and that’s the best kind of insurance for my emotional well-being.1.Which of the following is an example of the “extra minute”rule ?A. Start the car the moment everyone is seated.B. Leave the room for a minute with the iron working.C. Wait for an extra minute so that the steak tastes better.D. Move an object out of the way before it trips someone.2.The author decided to go to her office on Good Friday to __________.A. keep her appointment with the eye doctorB. meet her father who was already an old manC. join in the holiday celebration of the companyD. finish her work before the deadline approaching3.The underlined word “foregone”in Paragraph 3 is closed in meaning to“_________”.A. abandonedB. lackedC. avoidedD. wasted4.What is the best title for the passage ?A. The Emotional Well-beingB. The Two Saddest WordsC. The Most Useful RuleD. The Peace of Mind【文章大意】这篇文章主要讲解的是作者对于最悲哀的两个单词if only 的理解及看法。

In the dead of winter,we don't typically think about spending time outdoors, but according to many physicians we should. The sun is our greatest source of a vitamin that is essential for good health—Vitamin D.This important vitamin strengthens bones and teeth and is linked to the prevention of heart disease, cancer and many other lifethreatening diseases. The recommended daily requirement is 400600 International Units(IU).In summer, people with dark brown eyes and darker skin turn sunlight from just 15 minutes outside without sunscreen into adequate amounts of Vitamin D.Even during winter, just a 10minute walk at midday can keep the body's Vitamin D at healthy levels.During brief winter walks,we receive the greatest benefits when we wear no sunscreen and expose as much skin to the sun as possible.Vitamin D can be also obtained from foods.Salmon is one of the best sources of the Vitamin.Egg yolks(蛋黄),cheese, mushrooms and some animal organs contain smaller quantities of it.To attract consumers, food companies add Vitamin D to some of their milk products. The practice of putting the Vitamin into milk began in the 1930s.At that time, many children were suffering from rickets,an illness that is caused by a deficiency (缺乏)of Vitamin D.It made the children's bones soft and weak.Adding Vitamin D to milk helped to solve the problem, and it has been available ever since. For people who still need more Vitamin D,there is another option:Take Vitamin D supplements(补充物).These products are widely sold in stores. However, anyone considering taking supplements should consult a physician first.1.During the winter months, people ________.A.aren't able to meet their deadlinesB.often don't dress warmly enoughC.generally like to remain indoorsD.leave lots of work for others to do2.According to the text,Vitamin D ________.A.can be obtained by being exposed to the sunB.can be used to cure lifethreatening diseasesC.can be mainly found in some milk productsD.can make the children's bones soft and weak3.Why is salmon mentioned in this article?A.It's seldom prepared in the correct way.B.It's a useful addition to a person's diet.C.It has a huge impact on the environment.D.Its advantages have been exaggerated.4.The main purpose of this article is ________.A.to introduce a valuable nutrientB.to advertise Vitamin D supplementsC.to note risks associated with a nutrientD.to explain how a nutrient was discovered【解题导语】本文是一篇科普文,主要介绍了维生素D的一些情况。

She now knows the men’s clothing belonged to one of her "alternatives" and the same person was responsible for separating those closest from her.In an interview, Ms Del Sol said she was not allowed to name any of her six alternative persons. Back in 1983, two scientists, Jack Schultz and Ian Baldwin, reported that young maple trees getting bitten by insects send out a particular smell that neighboring plants can get. These chemicals come from the injured parts of the plant and seem to be an alarm. What the plants pump through the air is a mixture of chemicals known as volatile organic compounds, VOCs for short.Scientists have found that all kinds of plants give out VOCs when being attacked .It’s a plant’s way of crying out. But is anyone listening? Apparently. Because we can watch the neighbours react. Some plants pump out smelly chemicals to keep insects away. But others do double duty. They pump out perfumes designed to attract different insects who are natural enemies to the attackers. Once they arrive, the tables are turned. The attacker who was lunching now becomes lunch. In study after study, it appears that these chemical conversations help the neighbors .The damage is usually more serious on the first plant, but the neighbors, relatively speaking, stay safer because they heard the alarm and knew what to do.Does this mean that plants talk to each other? Scientists don’t know. Maybe the first plant just made a cry of pain or was sending a message to its own branches, and so, in effect, was talking to itself. Perhaps the neighbors just happened to “overhear” the cry. So information was exchanged, but it wasn’t a true, in tentional back and forth.Charles Darwin, over 150 years ago, imagined a world far busier, noisier and more intimate(亲密的)than the world we can see and hear. Our senses are weak. There’sa whole lot going on.12. What does a plant do when it is under attack?A. It makes noises.B. It gets help from other plants.C. It stands quietlyD. It sends out certain chemicals.13. What does the author mean by “the tables are turned”in paragr aph 3?A. The attackers get attacked.B. The insects gather under the table.C. The plants get ready to fight back.D. The perfumes attract natural enemies.14.Scientists find from their studies that plants can .A. predict natural disastersB. protect themselves against insectsC. talk to one another intentionallyD. help their neighbors when necessary15.what can we infer from the last paragraph?A. Unit 5 Theme parks李仕才***阅读理解。
Chinese New Year is approaching and preparations are underway around the world. Here are some Chinatowns for those outside of China wishing to mark the day.LondonAlthough it may not be as large or as long-built as others, having only become a center for the Chinese community during the 1950s, London’s Chinatown is a perfectly formed little firework that knows how to see in the year with a bang. Decorated with red lanterns (灯笼), previous years have seen shows with acrobatics (杂技), martial arts (武术), dance and opera nearby.San FranciscoSan Francisco’s Chinatown is perhaps the most famous in the United States. The city was the main entry-point for Chinese who had crossed the Pacific to the USA during the early 19th century. Between the Grant Avenue and the Stockton Street, this historic area is a local treasure, attracting more visitors per year than the Golden Gate Bridge. BangkokWith an about 100-year-old history, the Thai capital’s Chinatown contains complex streets offering all kinds of tasty treats, clothes, toys and antiques. Sunday market days are such a good time to get the full atmosphere of the neighborhood. The area is also known for its gold dealers, whose shops line the road.MauritiusFound in Port Louis, th is Mauritian Chinatown shows the island nation’s rich multicultural diversity. Established in the early years of the 20th century by settlers from China, its tiny shops and restaurants serve locals and visitors. During the Chinese Spring Festival, the most exciting sight is the Dragon Dances on Rue Royale when Chinese musicians and dancers perform the traditional Lion dances through the streets.1.
