Text 3The aim of the teacher is to get his pupils as quickly as possible over the period in which each printed symbol is looked at for its shape, and arrive at the stage when the pupil looks at words a phrases, for their meaning, almost without noticing the shapes of these separate letters. When a good reader is at work, he does not look at letters, nor even at words, one by or however quickly; he takes in the meaning of two, three, or four words at a time, in a single moment. Watch carefully the eyes of a person who is reading, and it will be seen that they do not travel smoothly along the lines of print, but they move by jumps separated by very short stops. The eyes a very good reader move quickly, taking long jumps and making very short halts (停顿 ); the eyes of a poor reader move more slowly, taking only short jumps and stopping longer at each halt. Some times, when he meets a difficulty, he even goes backwards to see again what has already be looked at once. The teacher ' 9 task is therefore clear: it is to train his pupils to take in several words at a glance (one "eye jump") and remove the necessity forgoing backwards to read something a second time. This shows at once that letter-by-letter, or syllable-by-syllable (⾳节) , or word-by-word reading, with the finger pointing to the word, carefully fixing each one in turn, is wrong. It is wrong because such a method ties the pupil' s eye down to a very short jump. Moreover, a very. short jump too short to provide any meaning or sense; and it will be found that having struggled with three four words separately, the pupil has to look at them again, all together and in one group, in order get the meaning of the whole phrase.56. Which of the following is closest in meaning to the first paragraph?[ A ] Pupils should be trained to reach quickly the stage of reading without having toconcentrate on the separate symbols.[B] Pupils should look at each printed symbol for its meaning as well as for its shape.[ C ] Teachers should help their pupils avoid looking at the shape of the printed symbols.[D] Teachers should tell their pupils the different stages of their study.57. In a single moment, a good reader picks up_________.[ A ] several words [ B ] several phrases[ C ] several sentences [ D ] several lines58. According to the passage, which of the following is FALSE?[A] The eyes of a good reader make short halts and long jumps.[ B] The eyes of a bad reader take in the meaning of one word at a time.[ C] The eyes of a bad reader take only short jumps.[D] The eyes of a good reader move steadily.59. One may have to read something a second time if_________.[ A ] there is enough time [ B ] one reads too fast[ C ] the passage is very long [D] one reads word by word60. The main idea of the last paragraph is that _________.[A] word-by-word reading is highly inefficient[ B ] the pupil ' s eyes should focus on groups of syllables instead of single syllables[ C ] pupils have to move their eyes back and forth when reading[D] finger-pointing in reading helps the pupil concentrate on meaningPart BDirections:Read the following article in which five people talk about their ideas of marriage. For questions 61 to 65 , match name of each speaker to one of the statements (A to G) given below. Mark your answers on your ANSWER SHEET.LisaSometimes I think that successful marriages are an endangered societal species. It seems as though every time I turn around, another couple I know is getting divorced. It' s a shame because marriage is very important. I believe that if people put more effort into making their marriages work, there would be fewer divorces. Marriage takes certain qualities to make it a success, such as responsibility and a sense of humor. If partners all understand this, more happy marriages will be maintained.WendyOne thing I think that is important to successful marriage is that you should not always think of yourself. My husband and I have stayed happily for about ten years. He makes me want to do things for him because of his generous nature. I know there are many times he would rather be reading, relaxing , or working on the car, but he only does something for himself when all the household chores are done and the kids have been taken care of. In return, I bake him all his favorite home-made cakes and cookies and try to go out of my way to do special things for him. I feel very fortunate to have married him.CatherineMy husband is my best friend, with whom I share most of my thought. We find it easy to talk about most things, so we don ' t have many secrets from each other. When my mother makes him upset , he tells me about it. Things like that are easier to deal with when they ' re out in the open than when they're kept inside. Thus, we have a very open, comfortable relationship.ArleneI feel sorry for what my divorced friends have lost. No matter how earnestly the former spouses try to "keep in touch", no matter how generous the visiting privileges for the parent who does not win custody of the children, the continuity of their lives has been broken. The years they spent together have been cut off from the rest of their lives; they are an isolated memory, no more integral to their past than a snapshot.KelicrThe very first trick to a happy marriage is to be a person of yourself who does not imagine a husband is necessary to make you magically complete. Successful partnerships are not between those who cannot live without each other, but between those who can live with each other. There is no room even in daydreams for the stupid idea that there is on earth only one mate intended for another. Now match each of the persons to the appropriate statement.Note: there are two extra statements.Statements61. Lisa [A] Being unselfish is very important to make a marriage work.62. Wendy [B] Becoming a person of independence and pride leads tosuccessful marriage.[C] Being able to communicate makes our marriage happy.63. Catherine[D] Divorced people will live an incomplete life.[E] Marriage is the result of extended love.[F] Divorce results from a lack of responsibility.65. Keller [G] Divorces can be avoided.Section IV Writing(40 minutes)You should write your responses to both parts on ANSWER SHEET 2.Part A66. Answer the questions below each text by choosing [A], [B],[C]or [D].Mark your answers on ANSWER SHEET 1.The Nobel Prize is a mysterious incarnation of power and authority, an anointed ritual whose claims are accepted as part of the order of things. The Nobel Prize is at once a relic of the past and a self-admiring mirror of our democratized, scientized, secularized modern culture. After a century of existence, the Nobel has become a problematic part of modern history: it helps shape our perception of ourselves for better or worse.Like monarchy, the Nobel Prize surrounds itself with mystery and extraordinary secretiveness. Indeed, the media have more easily breached the privacy of the British royal family than that of the Nobel institution. The prizes present themselves as if handed down from eternity. But as even a cursory inspection will reveal, the juries that pick the laureates have often shown bias, lapses of judgment and bitter infighting. In the sciences, a number of quarrels, scandals, and even lawsuits have erupted over claims to priority or credit for collaborations honored by Nobles. And while widely admired, the science prizes have also been charged with swaying research goals and funding, however inadvertently, and more insidiously with corrupting scientific ambitions by the lure of Nobel fames. Such controversies, together with public dissent from several prizes, have been part of the Nobel history since its beginning. All prizes stir arguments; the Nobel´s fame simply magnifies this hugely. The very glory and stature of the Nobel Prizes prompt some sharp questions. Should such high endeavors of the human spirit as science, literature, and peace be treated as competitions, however exalted? Should these priceless efforts be paid the enormous, though "honorary," price lavished on the winners? Would it matter if there never had been a Nobel Price? Or if it vanished tomorrow? The problem is that the prices are not merely awards and medals but are aspects of power woven into our lives: it was once and future Nobelists who built the nuclear bombs that still hang fatefully over us; Nobelists now play an important part in public and military policy. It is also true that the Nobel Prizes show modern fame: the Nobel Prize pays honor to some of the highest human adventures in nature and matter, creativity and justice. Where else, moreover, can both the unfamed and the general public find a replacement for the authority and coherence, to whatever degree, the Nobel has come to possess? In a world and age as inwardly fractured as ours this is a question not lightly dismissed.第21题The Nobel has become a problematic part of modern history because ______.A.it reflects the modern world and results in many follow-up questionsB.it dismisses authority and coherenceC.the standard for the prize is unclear and arouses many questionsD.the prize cannot be seen as a driving force for social development第22题Which of the following statements is true about the Nobel Prize?A.The prizes need to be diversified.B.The prizes are unexpected to the winners.C.The prize manifests authority and coherence.D.Prejudice does not exist among the panel of judges any longer.第23题The author´s attitude towards Nobel Prize is______.A.ambiguousB.negativeC.objectiveD.critical第24题The word "fractured" (Line 5, Paragraph 4) probably imply that______.A.alienation is seen as one of the problems of modern worldB.people are stratified and separated by modern technologyC.the Nobel Prize is accepted by people from all walks of lifeD.the world is diversified and Nobel does not necessarily mean authority第25题Which of the following would be the best title for the text?A.The Authority of NobelB.On the Glory of NobelC.Nobel and the Modern WorldD.A mirror of Modern Culture上一题下一题(26~30/共20题)Section ⅡReading ComprehensionDirections :Read the following four terts. Answer the questions below each text by choosing [A], [B],[C]or [D].Mark your answers on ANSWER SHEET 1.Psychologists have known for a century that individuals vary in their cognitive ability. But are some groups, like some people, reliably smarter than others? In order to answer that question, we grouped 697 volunteer participants into teams of two to five members. Each team worked together to complete a series of short tasks, which were selected to represent the varied kinds of problems that groups are called upon to solve in the real world. One task involved logical analysis, another brainstorming; others emphasized coordination, planning and moral reasoning. Individual intelligence, as psychologists measure it, is defined by its generality: People with good vocabularies, for instance, also tend to have good math skills, even though we often think of those abilities as distinct. The results of our studies showed that this same kind of general intelligence also exists for teams. On average, the groups that did well on one task did well on the others, too. In other words, some teams were simply smarter than others. We found the smartest teams were distinguished by three characteristics. First, their members contributed more equally to the team´s discussions, rather than letting one or two people dominate the group. Second, their members scored higher on a test called Reading the Mind in the Eyes, which measures how well people can read complex emotional states from images of faces with only the eyes visible. Finally, teams with more women outperformed teams with more men. This last effect, however, was partly explained by the fact that women, on average, were better at "mindreading" than men.In a new study, we replicated these earlier findings. We randomly assigned each of 68 teams to complete our collective intelligence test in one of two conditions. Half of the teams worked face to face. The other half worked online, with no ability to see any of their teammates. We wanted to see whether groups that worked online would still demonstrate collective intelligence, andwhether social ability would matter as much when people communicated purely by typing messages into a browser. And they did. Online and off, some teams consistently worked smarter than others. More surprisingly, the most important ingredients for a smart team remained constant regardless of its mode of interaction: members who communicated a lot, participated equally and possessed good emotion-reading skills.第26题It can be inferred from the first paragraph that______.A.some groups are really smarter than othersB.the 697 volunteer participants need to complete a series of short tasks togetherC.the selected short tasks must have practical significanceD.logical analysis and brainstorming are important in each task第27题According to psychologists, individual intelligence______.A.is characterized by generalityB.is related to math skillsC.is not related to teamsD.is key to smarter teams第28题According to the author, the characteristics of smarter teams include all the following EXCEPT ______.A.the members have relatively equal contribution to the team´ s discussionsB.the members have a higher IQC.the members have a stronger ability of reading complex facial expressionsD.there are more female members than other teams第29题In a new study, the other half of people work online because______.A.it´ s necessary to ensure the accuracy of the experimentB.online collaboration is becoming more and more importantC.the experimenters want to see whether collective intelligence will be showedD.the experimenters want to prove social ability is vital to every team第30题The best title for the passage may be______.A.How to Develop a Smarter TeamB.Why Some Teams Are Smarter Than OthersC.The Characteristics of Smarter TeamD.What Factors can Affect a Team上一题下一题(31~35/共20题)Section ⅡReading ComprehensionDirections :Read the following four terts. Answer the questions below each text by choosing [A], [B],[C]or [D].Mark your answers on ANSWER SHEET 1.Many of the tech industry´s biggest companies, like Amazon, Google, IBM and Microsoft, are jockeying to become the leader for artificial intelligence(A.I.). In the industry´s term, thecompanies are engaged in a "platform war."A platform, in technology, is essentially a piece of software that other companies build on and that consumers cannot do without. Become the platform and huge profits will follow. Microsoft dominated personal computers because its Windows software became the center of the consumer software world. Google has come to dominate the Internet through its ubiquitous search bar. If true believers in A.I. are correct that this long-promised technology is ready for the mainstream, the company that controls A.I. could steer the tech industry for years to come. "Whoever wins this race will dominate the next stage of the information age," said Pedro Domingos, a machine learning specialist and the author of "The Master Algorithm," a 2015 book that contends that A.I. and big-data technology will remake the world. In this fight—no doubt in its early stages—the big tech companies are engaged in tit-for-tat publicity stunts, circling the same start-ups that could provide the technology pieces they are missing and, perhaps most important, trying to hire the same brains. Fei-Fei Li, a Stanford University professor who is an expert in computer vision, said one of her Ph.D. candidates had an offer for a job paying more than $1 million a year, and that was only one of four from big and small companies. For years, tech companies have used man-versus-machine competitions to show they are making progress on A.I. In 1997, an IBM computer beat the chess champion Garry Kasparov. Five years ago, IBM went even further when its Watson system won a three-day match on the television trivia show "Jeopardy!" Today, Watson is the centerpiece of IBM´s A.I. efforts.By 2020, the market for machine learning applications will reach $40 billion, IDC, a market research firm, estimates. And 60 percent of those applications, the firm predicts, will run on the platform software of four companies—Amazon, Google, IBM and Microsoft. Intelligent software applications will become commonplace, said Jeff Dean, a computer scientist who oversees Google´s A.I. development. "And machine learning will touch every industry."第31题The reason for Microsoft controlling personal computers is that______.A.it has formed a good platformB.its software has gained a lot of moneyC.its Windows software became popular among consumersD.its software has been widely used in search bar第32题Google can steer the tech industry in the future on premise that______.A.it has controlled the InternetB.A.I. has prepared to be the mainstreamC.it has won in the information ageD.A.I. and big-data technology have become mature第33题The text takes "Fei-Fei Li" as an example in Paragraph 3 to show that______.A.the competition between tech companies is fierceB.the candidates from famous universities are more popularC.the higher the pay is, the more likely the candidate is to accept the offerD.perhaps tech companies are striving for the same talents第34题In which way the tech companies have used to show their progress?petitions between men and machines.B.Chess games. shows.D.The profitability of new products.第35题What´s the author´ s attitude towards the future of A.I.?A.Negative.B.Positive.C.Unclear.D.Indifferent.上一题下一题(36~40/共20题)Section ⅡReading ComprehensionDirections :Read the following four terts. Answer the questions below each text by choosing [A], [B],[C]or [D].Mark your answers on ANSWER SHEET 1.Some futurologists have assumed that the vast upsurge of women in the workforce may portend a rejection of marriage. Many women, according to this hypothesis, would rather work than marry. The converse of this concern is that the prospects of becoming a multi -paycheck household could encourage marriages. In the past, only the earnings and financial prospects of the man counted in the marriage decision. Now, however, the earning ability of a woman can make her more attractive as a marriage partner. Data show that economic downturns tend to postpone marriage because the parties cannot afford to establish a family or are concerned about rainy days ahead. As the economy rebounds, the number of marriages also rises. Coincident with the increase in women working outside the home is the increase in divorce rates. Yet, it may be wrong to jump to any simple cause-and-effect conclusions. The impact of a wife´ s work on divorce is no less cloudy than its impact on marriage decisions. The realization that she can be a good provider may increase the chances that a working wife will choose divorce over an unsatisfactory marriage. But the reverse is equally plausible. Tensions grounded in financial problems often play a key role in ending a marriage. Given high unemployment, inflationary problems, and slow growth in real earnings, a working wife can increase household income and relieve some of these pressing financial burdens. By raising a family´ s standard of living, a working wife may strengthen her family´ s financial and emotional stability. Psychological factors also should be considered. For example, a wife blocked from a career outside the home may feel caged in the house. She may view her only choice as seeking a divorce. On the other hand, if she can find fulfillment through work outside the home, work and marriage can go together to create a stronger and more stable union. Also, a major part of women´s inequality in marriage has been due to the fact that, in most cases, men have remained the main breadwinners. With higher earning capacity and status occupations outside of the home comes the Capacity to exercise power within the family. A working wife may rob a husband of being the master of the house. Depending upon how the couple reacts to these new conditions, it could create a stronger equal partnership or it could create new insecurities.第36题The word "portend"(Sentence 1, Para. 1)is closest in meaning to "______".A.defyB.signalC.suffer fromD.result from第37题It is said in the passage that when the economy slides,______.A.men would choose working women as their marriage partnersB.more women would get married to seek financial securityC.even working women would worry about their marriagesD.more people would prefer to remain single for the time being第38题If women find fulfillment through work outside the home,______.A.they are more likely to dominate their marriage partnersB.their husbands are expected to do more houseworkC.their marriage ties can be strengthenedD.they tend to put their career before marriage第39题One reason why women with no career may seek a divorce is that______.A.they feel that they have been robbed of their freedomB.they are afraid of being bossed around by their husbandsC.they feel that their partners fail to live up to their expectationsD.they tend to suspect their husbands´ loyalty to their marriage第40题Which of the following statements can best summarize the author´s view in the passage?A.The stability of marriage and the divorce rate may reflect the economic situation of the country.B.Even when economically independent, most women have to struggle for real equality in marriage.C.In order to secure their marriage women should work outside the home and remain independent.D.The impact of the growing female workforce on marriage varies from case to case.上一题下一题(41~45/共5题)Part BDirections :Read the following tert and decide whether each of the statements is true or false. Mark your answers on ANSWER SHEET 1.[A]Think about how your attitude change will affect your life[B]Look for a role model[C]Be clear about your traits[D]Identify and understand what you want to change[E]Believe that you are able to change[F]Get rid of the pessimistic friends[G]Choose the right company"Our attitude toward life determines life´s attitude towards us." We´ve all heard about the power of our attitude, and that it´s our attitude that determines how much we succeed in life.If you look around you, you will see that people with a positive attitude enjoy life more and are generally happier and more successful than those who walk around grumpy and pessimistic. Our attitude is the driving force in our lives—it can either push you to do great things or pull you down to your demise. All the things that you have been through, all the people you have met and interacted with can have an impact on your attitude. If you think that all these factors have molded you into a person with a poor attitude towards life, there is no need to worry as there is always an opportunity for change. Let me share with you how I did it.__41__The first step towards change is clearly understanding what needs to be changed. Setting clear goals is the key to success in any endeavor. When it comes to changing your attitude, you need to do an honest and in-depth self-evaluation so you could point out exactly which of your traits need to be improved or totally changed.__42__We all need to know that what we´re trying to accomplish can in fact be achieved; that we can be more optimistic, more social or more patient. Find someone who has the kind of attitude that you want to have, and let his or her life give you inspiration and encouragement to move beyond your temporary failures in your journey towards becoming a better person.__43__To be able to overcome all the difficulties that lie ahead of you in your journey towards self betterment, you need to figure out exactly what this supposed change could bring to your life. Will changing your attitude mean a happier family or social life? Will a change in your attitude mean a more successful career or business? Fix your mind on the things that would come as a result of your attitude change and you will have a greater chance of reaching your goal.__44__As they say, "Bad company corrupts good character." You don´ t expect yourself to be able to change if you go on surrounding yourself with people who possess all the negative traits that you want to change. Consider befriending new people, especially those who are optimistic and have a healthy attitude towards life. You will see that your effort to change will be easier with these kinds of people as friends.__45__Often, the greatest obstacle between us and our goals is ourselves or our inability to trust in what we are able to do. If you don´t believe in yourself or believe that you or your life can change, it just won´t happen—you will either never start, or give up quickly so you won´t have even given yourself the opportunity to succeed. It cannot be denied that a positive attitude is very important for living a successful and satisfying life, so it is only right to strive to have a positive attitude.第41题第42题第43题第44题第45题上一题下一题(1/1)Part CDirections: Read the following text carefully and then translate the underlined segments into Chinese. For adults, happiness is complicated. As far as I am concerned, happiness is "the capacity for enjoyment". The more we can enjoy what we have, the happier we are. It´ s easy to overlook the pleasure we get from loving and being loved, the company of friends, the freedom to live where we please, even good health. While happiness may be more complex for us, the solution is the same as ever. Happiness isn´t about what happens to us; it´ s about how we perceive what happens to us. It´ s the knack of finding a positive for every negative, and viewing a set-back as a challenge. It´ s not wishing for what we don´ t have, but enjoying what we do possess._____________上一题下一题(1/1)Section WritingPart A第47题Suppose you have damaged your friend´ s computer when you lived in his house a few days ago. There are one billionpeople learning English now and about 80% of the information on the Internet is in English. Is this a good thing, or a bad thing Should we celebrate the fact that more and more of us can communicate, using a common language, across countries and cultures(文化) Or should weworry about the dangers of 'mono-culturalism', a world in which we all speak the same language, eat the same food and listen to the same musicDoes it matter if an increasing number of people speak the same language On the contrary(相反), I would have thought- although I have never accepted the argument that if only we all understood each other better, there would be fewer wars. Ask the people of India (where many of them speak at least some English) and Pakistan (the same situation with Ind ia)...If we all speak English, will we then all start eating McDonalds burgers Surely not. If English becomes more dominant(占主导地位的),will it kill other languages I doubt it. When I travel in Africa or Asia, I am always surprised by how many people can speak not only their own language but often one or more other related languages, as well as English and perhaps some French or German as well. When we discussed this on Talking Point a couple of years ago, we received a wonderfully poetic email from a listener in Ireland. "The English language is a beautiful language. Maybe it's like a rose," he said, "But who would ever want their garden just full of roseWell, I love roses, and I think they make a beautiful addition to any garden. But the way I see it, just by planting a few roses, you don't necessarily need to pull out everything else. If more and more people want to plant English roses, that 's fine by me.36. By saying "Ask the people of India... and Pakistan"(in Paragraph 3), the author is trying to show that .A. speaking the same language doesn't necessarily bring peaceB. wars can destroy the relationship between two countriesC. English doesn't kill other languagesD. English is widely used in the world37. What does "garden" in the last two paragraphs stand forA. Language.B. Family.C. The world.D. The Earth.38. For each question there are four suggested answers marked A. B. C and D. Choose one best answer and blacken the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet. The wheel was one of man's first inventions and yet it has also proved one of the most useful. So wide and varied are the uses of wheels, in machines and vehicles of all kinds, that it is difficult to imagine what the world would be like without them. It is surprising to hear it said, therefore, that the wheel's importance will perhaps be greatly reduced by the end of he century by an invention so new as to be still unnamed. The invention is a machine that floats above any surface on a cushion of air. The cushion is formed when air is blown into the bottom of the machine. This part is shaped like a saucer turned upside down. If air is blown into this saucer, the machine rises to a height that may vary from a few inches to a few feet.Industry is already using one form of the invention to deal with heavy loads. It can lift them with ease and since there are no wheels, and therefore no friction, they can be put into motion with the touch of a finger. The new invention, however, is having a great effect on transport. Not only does it make expensive road systems unnecessary, but it enables vehicles to travel equally well over land or water. This unique ability to reach most destinations has given rise to the prediction that wheeled vehicles may be as uncommon at the end of the century as aeroplanes were at the beginning.76. The first paragraph tells us that ________ A the wheel was man's earliest invention B wide wheels have a variety of important usesC the wheel's usefulness ahs yet to be proved77. At the end of the century, vehicles using the new invention will probably be __________A rareB unimportant D expensive80. About one hundred and fifty years before, in the year 1553, if a man took more than his share of salt, he would be thought to have broken the law and would be seriously punished, and his ear would be cut off.Salt was an important item on the dinner table of a king. PART III READING COMPREHENSIONS In this section there are four reading passages followed by fifteen multiple-choice questions. Read the passages and then mark your answers on your Answer Sheet. TEXT A Such joy. It was the spring of 1985, and President Reagan had just given Mother Teresa the Medal of Freedom in a Rose Garden ceremony. As she left, she walked down the corridor between the Oval Office and the West Wing drive, and there she was, turning my way. What a sight: a saint in a sari coming down the White House hall. As she came nearer, I could not help it: I bowed. "Mother", I said, "I just want to touch your hand." She looked up at me —— it may have been one of Gods subtle jokes that his exalted child spent her life looking up to everyone else —— and said only two words. Later I would realize that they were the message of her mission. "Luff Gott," she said. Love God. She pressed into my hand a poem she had written, as she glided away in a swoosh of habit. I took the poem from its frame the day she died. It is free verse, 79 lines, and is called "Mothers Meditation (in the Hospital)." In it she reflects on Christs question to his apostles: "Who do you say I am?" She notes that he was the boy born in Bethlehem," put in the manager full of straw…… kept warm by the breath of the donkey," who grew up to be "an ordinary man without much learning." Donkeys are not noble; straw is common; and it was among the ordinary and ignoble, the poor and sick, that she chose to labor. Her mission was for them and among them, and you have to be a pretty tough character to organize a little universe that exists to help people other people arent interested in helping. Thats how she struck me when I met her as I watched her life. She was tough. There was the worn and weathered face, the abrupt and definite speech. We think saints are great organizers, great operators, great combatants in the world. Once I saw her in a breathtaking act of courage. She was speaker at the National Prayer Breakfast in Washington in 1995. All the Washington Establishment was there, plus a few thousand born-again Christians, orthodox Catholics and Jews, and searchers looking for a faith. Mother Teresa was introduced, and she spoke of God, of love, of families. She said we must love one another and care for one another. There were great purrs of agreement. But as the speech continued it became more pointed. She asked, "Do you do enough to make sure your parents, in the old peoples homes, feel your love? Do you bring then each day your joy and caring?" The baby boomers in the audience began to shift in their seats. And she continued. "I feel that the greatest destroyer of peace today is abortion," she said, and then she told them why, in uncompromising term. For about 1.3 seconds there was complete silence, then applause built and swept across the room. But not everyone: the President and the First Lady, the Vice President and Mrs. Gore, looked like seated statues at Madame Tussauds, glistening in the lights and moving not a muscle. She didnt stop there either, but went on to explain why artificial birth control is bad and why Protestants who separate faith from works are making a mistake. When she was finished, there was almost no one she hadnt offended. A US Senator turned to his wife and said, "Is my jaw up yet?" Talk about speaking truth to power! But Mother Teresa didnt care, and she wasnt afraid. The poem she gave me included her personal answers to Christs question. She said he is "the Truth to be told…… the Way to be walked…… the Light to be lit." She took her own advice and lived a whole life that showed it. 36. Who was the exalted child? A) Mother Teresa. B) the author. C) I. D) God. 37. Who raised the question "who do you say I am?" A) the apostle. B) Christ. C) Mother Teresa. D) she. 38. Which of the following is not a quality of Mother Teresa? A) tough. B) definite. C) ethereal. D) like a steam-roller. 39. Why did the President and the First Lady, the Vice President and Mrs. Gore look like seated statues at the Madame Tussaud's? A) Because they didn't love Madame Tussaud. B) Because they didn't like to move. C) Because they were VIP. D) Because they didn't quite agree with Mother Teresa over the issue of abortion. 40. According to Mother Teresa, abortion is ____ A) one of Protestant works. B) one of Protestant faith. C) one of the Truths. D) not one of Protestant works TEXT B Since the Titanic vanished beneath the frigid waters of the North Atlantic 85 years ago, nothing in the hundreds of booksand films about the ship has ever hinted at a connection to Japan —— until now. Director James Camerons 200 million epic Titanic premiered at the Tokyo International Film Festival last Saturday. Among the audience for a glimpse of Hollywoods costliest film ever descendants of the liners only Japanese survivor. The newly rediscovered diary of Masabumi Hosono has Titanic enthusiasts in a frenzy. The document is scrawled in 4,300 Japanese character on a rare piece of RMS Titanic stationery. Written as the Japanese bureaucrat steamed to safety in New York aboard the ocean liner Carpathia, which rescued 706 survivors, the account and other documents released by his grandchildren last week offer a fresh —— and poignant —— reminder of the emotional wreckage left by the tragedy. Hosono, then 42 and an official at Japans Transportation Ministry, was studying railway networks in Europe. He boarded the Titanic in Southampton, en route home via the US. According to Hosonos account, he was awakened by a "loud knock" on the door of his second-class deck with the steerage passengers. Hosono tried to race back upstairs, but a sailor blocked his way. The Japanese feigned ignorance and pushed past. He arrived on deck to find lifeboats being lowered into darkness, flares bursting over the ship and an eerie human silence. He wrote:" Not a single passenger would howl or scream." Yet Hosono was screaming inside. Women were being taken to lifeboats and men held back at gunpoint. "I tried to prepare myself for the last moment with no agitation, making up my mind not to do anything disgraceful as a Japanese," he wrote. "But still I found myself looking for and waiting for any possible chance of survival." Then an officer shouted, "Room for two more!" Hosono recalled:" I myself was deep in desolate thought that I would no more be able to see my beloved wife and children." Then he jumped into the boat. When Hosono arrived in Tokyo two months later, he was met with suspicion that he had survived at someone elses expense. The culture of shame was especially strong in prewar Japan. In the face of rumors and bad press, Hosono was dismissed from his post in 1914. He worked at the office part-time until retiring in 1923. His grandchildren say he never mentioned the Titanic again before his death in 1939. Even then, shame continued to haunt the family. In newspapers, letters and even a school textbook, Hosono was denounced as a disgrace to Japan. Readers Digest reopened the wound in 1956 with an abridged Japanese version of Walter Loads best seller. A Night to remember, which described "Anglo-Saxons" as acting bravely on the Titanic, while "Frenchmen, Italians, Americans, Japanese and Chinese were disgraceful." Citing his fathers diary, one of Hosonos sons, Hideo, launched a letter-writing campaign to restore the family name. But nobody in Japan seemed to care. The diary resurfaced last summer. A representative for a US foundation that plans to hold an exhibition of Titanic artifacts in Japan next August found Hosonos name on a passenger list. A search led him to Haruomi Hosono, a well-known composer, and to his cousin Yuruoi, Hideos daughter. She revealed that she had her grandfathers dairy as well as a collection of his letters and postcards. "I was floored," says Michael Findley, cofounder of the Titanic International Society in the US "This is a fantastic, fresh new look at the sinking and the only one written on Titanic stationery immediately after the disaster." The information allows enthusiasts to rearrange some historical minutes, such as which lifeboat Hosono jumped into. More chilling, the account confirms that the crew tried to keep foreigners and third-class passengers on the ships lower deck, effectively ensuring their name. The diary cannot correct injustice, but Hosonos family hopes it will help clear his name. The Titanic foundation also hopes to capitalize on the diary and the movie to promote its upcoming exhibition. To that end, Haruomi Hosono, the composer, has been asked to give a talk at next months public premiere of Titanic! The diary cannot, of course, match Camerons fictionalized epic for drama and intrigue. But at least Masabumi Hosonos tale really happened. 41. ______ was among the descendants of the Liner's only Japanese survivor. A) Masabumi Hosono. B) Yuriko. C) Cameron. D) RMS. 42. Why was Masabumi denounced as a disgrace to Japan? A) Because he killed some people on the Titanic. B) Because he was then an official. C) Because he was dismissed from his ministry post. D) Because the culture of shame was too strong. 43. What important role did the diary really play? A) It corrected injustice. B) It was as vivid as the movie "Titanic". C) It proved what Masabumi said was true. D) It made the Japanese believe what Masabumi had said.。

Reading Comprehension(30 points, 2 points for each item)Passage OneQuestions 21 to 25 are based on the following passage. Many a young person tells me he wants to be a writer. I always encourage such people, but I also explain that there's a big difference between “ being a writer ” and writing. In most cases these individuals are dreaming of wealth and fame, not the long hours alone at a typewriter. “ You ’ve got to want to write, ” I say to them, “ not want to be a writer ” .The reality is that writing is a lonely, private and poor —paying affair. For every writer kissed by fortune there are thousands more whose longing is never rewarded. When I left a 20 —year career in the U.S. Coast Guard to become a freelance writer ( 自由撰稿者), I had no prospects at all. What I did have was a friend who found me in my room in a New York apartment building. It didn't even matter that it was cold and had no bathroom. I immediately bought a used manual typewriter and felt like a genuine writer. After a year or so, however, I still hadn't gotten a break and began to doubt myself. It was so hard to sell a story that barely made enough to eat. But I knew I wanted to write. I had dreamed about it for years. I wasn't going to be one of those people who die wondering, What if? I would keep putting my dream to the test ——even though it meant living with uncertainty and fear of failure. This is the Shadowland of hope, and anyone witha dream must learn to live there.21. The passage is meant to ______.A. warn young people of the hardships that a successful writer has to experienceB. advise young people to give up their idea of becoming a professional writerC. show young people it's unrealistic for a writer to pursue wealth and fameD. encourage young people to pursue a writing career22. What can be concluded from the passage?A. Genuine writers often find their work interesting and rewarding.B. A writer's success depends on luck rather than on effort.C. Famous writers usually live in poverty and isolation.D. The chances for a writer to become successful are small.23. Why did the author begin to doubt himself after the first year of his writing career?A. He wasn't able to produce a single book.B. He hadn't seen a change for the better.C. He wasn't able to have a rest for a whole year.D. He found his dream would never come true.24. “ ... people who die wondering, What if? ” (Line 3, para.3) refers to “ those ” .A. who think too much of the dark side of lifeB. who regret giving up their career halfwayC. who think a lot without making a decisionD. who are full of imagination even upon death25. “Shadowland” in the last sentence refers to ______.A. the wonderland one often dreams aboutB. the bright future that one is looking forward toC. the state of uncertainty before one's final goal is reachedD. a world that exists only in one's imaginationPassage TwoQuestions 26 to 30 are based on the following passage.Britain almost more than any other country in the world must seriously face the problem of building upwards, that is to say of accommodating a considerable proportion of its population in high blocks of flats. It is said that the Englishman objects to this type of existence, but if the case is such, he does in fact differ from the inhabitants of most countries of the world today. In the past our own blocks of flats have been associated with the lower-income groups and they have lacked the obvious provisions, such as central heating, constant hot water supply, electrically operated lifts from top to bottom, and so on, as well as such details, important notwithstanding (然而), as easy facilities for disposal of dust and rubbish and storage places for baby carriages on the ground floor, playgrounds for children on the top of the buildings, and drying grounds for washing. It is likely that the dispute regarding flats versus (对, 对抗) individual houses will continue to rage on for a long time as far as Britain is concerned. And it is unfortunate that there should be hot feelings on both sides whenever this subject is raised. Those who oppose the building of flats base their case primarily on the assumption (设想)that everyone prefers an individual home and garden and on the high cost per unit of accommodation. The latter ignores the higher cost of providing full services to a scattered community and the cost in both money and time of the journeys to work for the suburban resident.26. We can infer from the passage that ______.A. English people, like most people in other countries, dislike living in flatsB. people in most countries of the world today are not opposed to living in flatsC. people in Britain are forced to move into high blocks of flatsD. modern flats still fail to provide the necessary facilities for living27. What is said about the blocks of flats built in the past in Britain?A. They were mostly inhabited by people who did not earn much.B. They were usually not large enough to accommodate big families.C. They were sold to people before necessary facilities were installed.D. They provided playground for children on the top of the buildings.28. The word “ rage ” (Line 10) means “______.”A. be ignoredB. develop with great forceC. encourage people greatlyD. be in fashion29. Some people oppose the building of flats because ______.A. the living expenses for each individual family are higherB. it involves higher cost compared with the building of housesC. they believe people like to live in houses with gardensD. the disposal of rubbish remains a problem for those living in flats30. The author mentions that people who live in suburban houses .A. do not have access to easy facilities because they live away from the cityB. have to pay a lot of money to employ people to do service workC. take longer time to know each other because they are a scattered communityD. have to spend move money and time travelling to work every dayPassage ThreeQuestions 31 to 35 are based on the following passage.Brazil has become one of the developing world’s great successes at reducing population growth - but more by accident than design. While countries such as India have made joint efforts to reduce birth rates, Brazil has had better result without really trying, says George Martine at Harvard.Brazil's population growth rate has dropped from 2.99% a year between 1951 and 1960 to 1.93% a year between 1981 and 1990, and Brazilian women now have only 2.7 children on average. Martine says this figure may have fallen still further since 1990, an achievement that makes it the envy of many other Third World countries.Martine puts it down to, among other things, soap operas (通俗电视连续剧) and installment (分期付款) plans introduced in the 1970s. Both played an important, although indirect, role in lowering the birth rate. Brazil is one of the world’s biggest producers of soap operas. Globo, Brazil's most popular television network, shows three hours of soaps six nights a week, while three others show at least one hour a night. Most soaps are based on wealthy characters living the high life in big cities.“ Alt hough they have never really tried to work in a message towards the problems of reproduction, they describe middle and upper class values ——not many children, different attitudes towards sex, women working, ” says Martine. “ They sent this image to all pa rts of Brazil and made people conscious of other patterns of behavior and other values, which were put into a very attractive package. ”Meanwhile, the installment plans tried to encourage the poor to become consumers. “ This led to an enormous change in consumption patterns and consumption was incompatible (不相容的) with unlimited reproduction, ” says Martine.31. According to the passage, Brazil has cut back its population growth ______.A. by educating its citizensB. by careful family planningC. by developing TV programmesD. by chance32. According to the passage, many Third World countries ______.A. haven't attached much importance to birth controlB. would soon join Brazil in controlling their birth rateC. haven't yet found an effective measure to control their populationD. neglected the role of TV plays in family planning33. The phrase “ puts it down to ” (Line 1, Para. 3) is closest in meaning to “______.”A. attributes it toB. finds it a reason forC. sums it up asD. compares it to34. Soap operas have helped in lowering Brazil’s birth rate because ______..A. they keep people sitting long hours watching TVB. they have gradually changed people’s way of lifeC. people are drawn to their attractive packageD. they popularize birth control measures35. What is Martine’s conclusion about Brazil’s population growth?A. The increase in birth rate will promote consumption.B. The desire for consumption helps to reduce birth rate.C. Consumption patterns and reproduction patterns are contradictory.D. A country’s production is limited by its population growth.Ⅳ.Word Spelling (10 points,1 point for two items)36.请求;恳求v. s37.电子的; a. e38. Answer the questions below each text by choosing [A], [B],[C]or [D].Mark your answers on ANSWER SHEET 1.During the day, Leipzig´s airport is quiet. It is at night that the airfield comes to life. Next to the runway a yellow warehouse serves as the global sorting hub for DHL, a delivery firm owned by Deutsche Post of Germany. A huge extension, which opened in October, means it can sort 150,000 parcels each hour, says Ken Allen, DHL´s CEO. With falling trade barrier, cross-border e-commerce has become a key term in the modern economy. The rise of cross-border e-commerce has meant booming business for express-delivery firms. On January 31st UPS revealed record revenues for the fourth quarter of 2016; FedEx and DHL are expected to report similarly buoyant results next month. Since 2008 half of the increase in express-delivery volumes has come from shoppers buying items online from another country.Falling trade barriers have greatly helped them. When DHL and FedEx were getting going in the 1970s, there was little demand for international express deliveries. Packages often got stuck in customs for weeks and were heavily taxed. The expansion of free-trade areas, lower tariffs and the Internet brought years of growth. But after Mr. Trump´s threats to raise tariffs on goods from China and Mexico, together with the indication last month from Theresa May, Britain´s prime minister, that the country will leave the EU´s customs union, there are widespread fears that the favourable tailwinds enjoyed by the industry for decades are gone. The express-delivery industry faces a new challenge: the return of trade barriers due to the protectionist bent of Donald Trump and because of Brexit. The return of borders poses a challenge to the soaring parcel-delivery business." It´s all a real nightmare," groans David Jinks of ParcelHero, a British parcel broker which works with DHL, FedEx and UPS. Start with Brexit. Post-Brexit costs will probably come from long wrangles over which of 19,000 customs codes should be applied to a consignment. As an example of what could happen, Halloween costumes from China often get stuck at Britain´s border while customs officials work out whether they are toys or children´s clothes, which attract different duties. Such complexity would force delivery firms to put up their prices to customers, Mr. Jinks says. Sending an item from Britain to Switzerland (outside the EU) costs 150% more than it does to Italy (inside the EU).The most severe impact on business would come from higher tariffs, which would hurt demand for cross-border imports and deliveries in favour of local goods. This is where Mr. Trump´s threats come into focus.第21题The example of Leipzig´s airport shows that_____.A.Leipzig´s airport serves as the biggest sorting hub for DHL.B.Airport delivers more goods than any other forms of cross-border deliveries.C.Cross-border e-commerce has promoted the expansion of delivery services.D.Express-delivery firms face a new challenge because of changing policies in US and UK.第22题The word "buoyant" is closest in meaning to______.A.optimisticB.fluctuatingC.unpredictableD.mundane第23题What do we know about parcel delivery services in the 1970s?A.There are falling trade barriers.B.DHL and FedEx are expanding rapidly.C.The express-delivery faces the return of trade barriers.D.International express delivery is in its preliminary stage.第24题What effect will Brexit probably bring on parcel delivery services?A.The trade between China and the UK will drop tremendously.B.Customers will have to pay more on delivery services.C.19,000 customs codes will be examined by British parliament.D.DHL, FedEx and UPS will close some of their branches in Britain.第25题The passage is mainly about______.A.Logistics firms are faced with trade barriers.B.The US and the UK work together to promotecross-border imports.C.Cross-border e-commerce is booming.D.Express-delivery firms DHL, FedEx and UPS are fined by customs in the UK and US.上一题下一题(26~30/共20题)Section ⅡReading ComprehensionDirections :Read the following four terts. Answer the questions below each text by choosing [A], [B],[C]or [D].Mark your answers on ANSWER SHEET 1.Many people take to social media to share news of big events. On December 1st Facebook´s boss, Mark Zuckerberg, followed in the tradition he helped create, when he and his wife, Priscilla Chan, announced the birth of their daughter on the social-networking site, along with news that they will give away the majority of their fortune during their lifetimes.Around 99% of the shares they own in Facebook, which today are worth around $ 45 billion, will go into the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative (CZI). Their aim, they wrote, is to improve the world for their daughter and future generations. For now, the move allows Mr. Zuckerberg to relinquish wealth, but not control, as he will retain the votes associated with any shares transferred to CZI. He anticipates remaining the controlling stakeholder of Facebook " for the foreseeable future" , and plans to sell, or give away, no more than $ 1 billion of Facebook stock each year for the next three years.Mr. Zuckerberg is far from the first tech titan to pledge billions to philanthropic activities, but he is following a slightly different path to Bill Gates, Microsoft´s founder. Whereas the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation is a registered charity, the Zuckerbergs´ CZI will be a limited liability company ( LLC ). Although charitable status comes with alluring tax breaks, strings are attached. Unlike charities, LLCs can lobby without restriction; the Zuckerbergs have said that CZI will get involved in policy debates. The other flexibility LLC status allows is the freedom to invest in for-profit ventures that have a big social impact. In this, the Zuckerbergs are following in the footsteps of Pierre Omidyar, founder of eBay, an online marketplace, who grew frustrated by the constraints of charitable status.Mr. Omidyar now oversees the Omidyar Network, which has for-profit and non-profit arms. Will Fitzpatrick, designer of this hybrid structure, claims that the for-profit arm can more easily invest in things that can be scaled up quickly. He gives the example of an investment in a solar lantern that cost less than $ 10 a unit, which meant people did not have to burn dangerous kerosene, and which he says would have been technically difficult to achieve through a private foundation. 第26题Mark Zuckerberg and Priscilla Chan celebrated the birth of their daughter by______.A.creating the tradition of announce big news on FacebookB.creating the Chan Zuckerberg InitiativeC.donating $ 1 billion of Facebook stock to CZID.selling 99% of the shares they own in Facebook第27题The word "relinquish" is closet in meaning to______.A.abandonB.maintainC.withholdD.distribute第28题Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation is______.A.the first tech titan to pledge billions to philanthropic activitiesB.allowed to invest in for-profit venturesC.obliged to meet certain requirementsD.working with CZI to make the world a better place第29题What do we know about Pierre Omidyar?A.He does not like registered charity coming with strings.B.He created eBay for non-profit purposes.C.He suggested to Zuckerbergs to set up a limited liability company.D.He made the Omidyar Network a subsidiary of eBay.第30题This passage is best entitled______.A.Mark Zuckerberg Finds Another Way to ShareB.Mark Zuckerberg and His Wife Having Their First BabyC.More High-tech Giants Devoted to PhilanthropyD.Mark Zuckerberg Find a New Way of Running Facebook上一题下一题(31~35/共20题)Section ⅡReading ComprehensionDirections :Read the following four terts. Answer the questions below each text by choosing [A], [B],[C]or [D].Mark your answers on ANSWER SHEET 1.One of our expectations about education is that it will pay off in terms of upward mobility. Historically , the correlation between education and income has been strong. But in the early 1970s a contradiction developed between education and the economy. Our value of education and our average educational attainment outstripped the capacity of the economy to absorb thegraduates. Since the 1970s, high-school graduates have experienced a striking decrease in earnings, making them the first generation since World War II to face a lower standard of living than their parents had.Experts have argued that this contradiction is at the heart of the problem of public education today. Business leaders claim that the schools are failing to properly educate students, that they are turning out young people who are inadequately prepared to function in the workplace. The real problem is a dearth of economic opportunities for students who are not continuing on to college.College graduates also are having difficulty finding jobs. Even when they do, the jobs may not be commensurate to their training and expectations. Part of the problem is that too many young Americans aspire to have professional jobs, making disappointment and frustration inevitable for some. Many students assumed that what was true of an individual—that the higher the education, the better the job opportunities—would also be true for an entire society. But when the numbers of better-educated young people became too great, the economy could no longer absorb them.Another part of the problem is the assumption that greater educational attainment guarantees career advancement. In fact, employers do not routinely reward educational attainment; rather, they reward it only when they believe it will contribute to the employee´s productivity. We should not overlook the fact that there is still a strong correlation between education, occupation , and income. College graduates have a strong advantage over those with less education. But the payoff is neither as large nor as certain as it once was.Unfortunately, Americans have focused so strongly on the economic payoff that many consider their college education useless if it does not yield a desirable, well-paying job. Only in this sense can we speak of an "oversupply" of college graduates. We could argue that all or at least the majority of Americans would profit by some degree because higher education can enable the individual to think more deeply, explore more widely, and enjoy a greater range of experiences. 第31题The underlined sentence in Paragraph 1 means that______.cation will pay off in terms of upward mobilityB.People with high education will have immense opportunitiescational institutions provide more graduates than neededD.Many college graduates fail to meet the job requirements第32题According to the author, what is the real problem of public education today?A.People not having received higher education find it difficult to land a job.B.Poor economy brings far less jobs for college graduates than before.C.College graduates see a remarkable decline in income.D.The government has less budget for building schools.第33题The underlined word "commensurate" is closest in meaning to______.A.appropriateB.respectableC.adequateD.advisable第34题Greater educational attainment does not necessarily guarantees career advancement because______.cational attainment only represents academic achievementcational attainment means nothing to employers if it doesn´t give economic benefitscational attainment has no relation with employees´ professional skillscational attainment can only be achieved by a small number of students第35题What does the author think about college education according to the last paragraph?A.Americans should focus more on vocational education.B.College education receive less attention in recent years.C.College education is useless in getting a desirable job.D.Most Americans still find college education rewarding.上一题下一题(36~40/共20题)Section ⅡReading ComprehensionDirections :Read the following four terts. Answer the questions below each text by choosing [A], [B],[C]or [D].Mark your answers on ANSWER SHEET 1.Jeffrey Cohn and J. P. Flaum surveyed and interviewed the managing partners of 32 private equity firms (including Blackstone, Carlyle, KKR and Silver Lake) about their CEO search process and how it has changed over time.Among the surprises: Executives said they´ve learned to pay less attention to attributes such as track record and experience, the criteria typically most prized by recruiters, and to give more weight to softer skills. The researchers drew the following conclusions: Experience is overrated. When filling a CEO position, there´s comfort in hiring someone with prior CEO and industry experience. But the first criterion can dramatically narrow the pool, and the second can yield, candidates who are so familiar with the industry that they´re hidebound or likely just to recycle the strategic playbook from their last job. Similarly, overemphasizing quantifiable success in prior positions can be misleading, because results are often a function of "right place/right time" or organizational or team factors rather than one individual. And even within an industry, different competitive positions can demand very different skills—cost cutting versus product innovation versus business model change, for instance.Team-building skills are paramount. Of the 13 attributes included in the survey, the highest ranked was a candidate´s ability to assemble a high-performing team. That makes sense, because many PE investments involve turnarounds in which the new CEO must completely rebuild the C-suite. To avoid leaders who won´t excel at building teams, PE execs say, they watch out for candidates who use "I" too much when talking about accomplishments or who display so much intellectual horsepower that they come across as arrogant, which can inhibit hiring and developing A-level talent.Urgency outranks empathy. PE firms operate with strict timetables for when a company should be improved and the investment recouped through sale or IPO. (The typical goal is five years.) This ticking clock means that a portfolio company CEO can expect close oversight and faces heightened expectations a-bout the speed with which cost cuts or revenue growth will takeplace. While this doesn´t mean that a CEO shouldn´t listen to customers or show concern for employees, it does require moving decisively and without regrets.Resilience is a must. Parents understand that building resilience in children is important to character; PE types, too, cite it as an important leadership virtue. They´ve become skeptical about candidates who have skipped seamlessly from success to success. "PE firms want to see that a candidate has faced setbacks, made errors, and run adrift—yet lived to fight another day," according to the researchers´ report. This attribute is especially important because in turnaround situations, leaders are likely to encounter some negative results.A final difference between private equity and public company CEO hiring: PE execs tend to judge very quickly—usually within nine months—whether a new hire is working out. Compared with public company directors, they are quick to engineer a failing CEO´s exit—and when they think back, they often wish they´d moved even more quickly.第36题According to the third paragraph, a "hidebound" candidate would probably ______.A.try new methods while workingB.work in a reluctant wayC.be bound to his former bossD.be unlikely to change第37题In the PE execs´ mind, which one of the following people may excel at building teams?A.People who do not use the word "I" when speaking to the boss.B.People who do not emphasize the significance of accomplishments.C.People who care more about the team members.D.People who show very low intelligence.第38题A portfolio company CEO, who believes that urgency outranks empathy, may ______.A.wear a ticking watch to tell him the right time to improve a companyB.want to speed up the growing of revenue for his own purposeC.firstly show concern for employeesD.expect intensive supervision第39题According to the 6th paragraph, for PE firms, a candidate of resilience should ______.A.make mistakes from time to timeB.have a longer life span to fight against his rivalsC.not stay in one position for a long timeD.pull himself together in front of failures第40题According to this passage, which of the following could be an ideal CEO candidate for the private equity firms?A.One with 20 years of related working experience, a non-stop leading figure among the peers.B.One who cares about the employees, doing all the work by himself to relieve the team members.C.One who is tough and decisive, with limited working experience.D.One who is a resilient team leader, with a sense of urgency, not accepted by the talents in histeam.上一题下一题(41~45/共5题)Part BDirections :Read the following tert and decide whether each of the statements is true or false. Mark your answers on ANSWER SHEET 1.[A] Big money and ideas from musicians, soldiers and private-equity gurus are behind major medal hauls.[B] Yet the transformation of Britain´s performance in the Olympics remains a remarkable tale.[C] Britain not only has spent huge amounts on achieving Olympic success but also has been meticulous in how the funding is used.[D] But success for the elite has come at a time of falling sports participation in Britain, with the decline greatest among the poor.[E] The model has been unashamedly ruthless, concentrating on disciplines with the best medal prospects while ditching losers.[F] UK Sport has borrowed from a wide array of fields in pursuit of an edge.[G] Yet cash alone cannot explain all of Team GB´s success: for the 2012 games, South Korea and Japan spent over three times more than Britain and had worse returns. It seems hardly an auspicious time to release a book on Britain´s Olympic success. Numerous scandals—accusations of bullying, sexism and failure to keep proper records of drugs—are engulfing British Cycling, a symbol of national glory. __41__ In 1996, Britain´s "team of shame" came 36th in the medal table, below Algeria, Ireland and North Korea. At the London games of 2012, Team GB (as the United Kingdom´s squad is officially known) won 65 medals, up from 15 in 1996. Britain performed even better in Rio last year, winning 27 golds and 67 medals in all, finishing second, above China, in the overall medal table, defying the trend of host nations´sliding down the tables in the following games. These hauls have been a triumph for detailed and ambitious planning, as Owen Slot, a sports writer for The Times, explains in an engaging book. Huge spikes in cash have helped. Across Olympic and Paralympic sports, UK Sport, Britain´s funding body, spent £69m ($89m) on Sydney 2000 but almost £350m on Rio 2016. __42__.UK Sport adopts the mindset of an investor seeking the best returns wherever they can be found. __43__. Even among the sports that do receive funding, cash is diverted to a tiny coterie of elite athletes: the £21m allocated to swimming before Rio was focused on nine "Golden Children". Before Rio 2016, Liam Tancock, Britain´s best male swimmer of recent times, lost his funding largely because he would turn 31 before the games—past his prime.Mr. Slot´s attention to detail turns up some fascinating facts. East German-style national talent-scouting programmes were created, producing Olympic medallists from those who had never previously played the sport—in the process debunking a widespread notion that 10,000 hours are needed to achieve excellence in a skill. Coaches were hooked up to heart-rate-variance monitors, to understand how to manage their stress levels better, and Team GB´s managers analysed the optimal way to coach athletes of different sexes. Teams engaged parents about the best techniques for nurturing high-performance athletes. The British Olympic Association made its first reconnaissance mission to Brazil, to find ideal hotels and training facilities, six years before Rio 2016.__44__ Music schools and military special forces were asked for advice on spotting talent and performing under pressure, and an expert in turning around flagging businesses, borrowed from a private-equity firm, helped improve British shooting´s meagre performance. Mr. Slot´s book is written in conjunction with Simon Timson and Chelsea Warr, two of Team GB´s directors of performance, who contribute a brief summary of lessons after each chapter. Their input is double-edged: it ensures that the book provides an unrivalled look inside UK Sport´s medal-factory, but may also keep Mr. Slot from tackling some subjects with complete independence. The increased investment in the Olympics and the subsequent bonanza of medals, may have given Britain a reason to hold its head high. __45__ For all the successes, the question lurking beneath this book is an uncomfortable one. In an era of austerity and impoverished grassroots sport, has the price of these medals been too great?第41题第42题第43题第44题第45题上一题下一题(1/1)Part CDirections: Read the following text carefully and then translate the underlined segments into Chinese.
