People expect me to be fearful for the future of print. After all, in some people´s minds I wouldn´t be able to build a career in journalism if it all moves online. However, strangely enough, I´m actually comforted by the fact that online journalism is becoming usual. I am a blogger who has always been able to find a home for my writing online.Since I began writing blogs, I have become aware of how many people you can reach with online writing. Compare this to the newspapers circulation base, and you will have a strong reason for online journalism. In her successful blog post titled “The job I have spent the last year learning is not the one I will have”, author Jenny Surane states,“Pri nt is an expensive product to love. And general managers, publishers and editors must now figure out a profitable way to get their news into readers´heads.” She goes on to state that people don´t feel like picking up a newspaper now and would rather scroll(滚屏) through their Twitter feed, and get news from many different sources. If print is dying, then a new form of communicating information is being born. The need for information has not died. If anything, it has increased. What has died, rather, is the way in which information is presented. Now more than ever, in this age of information, there is a desire for stories on the same topic from different points of view. The printing industry can keep pace with the need of providing a variety of sources, if it chooses to.Is the future of print grim? Maybe. But is the future of journalism of communicating information to people, grim as well? Definitely not.1. According to Paragraph 2, the author feels .A.confident about the future of his careerB.worried about the future of printC.tired of being a newspaper journalistD.embarrassed about online writing2. What information is conveyed in Jenny´s blog post?A.Twitter is not very popular.B.It is hard to manage online journalism.C.Print still has its own advantages.D.People have more options to get information.3. What does the underlined word “grim” in the last paragraph probably mean?A.Promising.B.Depressing.C.Unforgiving.D.Encouraging.4. What is the author´s purpose in writing the text?A.To explore the future of journalism.B.To analyse the cause of print decline.C.To explain the bright future of a journalist.D.To introduce a successful blog post about print.Ⅲ. 完形填空One academically excellent young person went to apply for a position in an international company. Unit 4 Making the news单元检测Ⅰ.阅读理解AHave you winterized your horse yet? Even though global warming may have made our climate more mild, many animals are still hibernating (冬眠). It's too bad that humans can't hibernate. In fact, as a species, we almost did.Apparently, at times in the past, peasants in France liked a semi-state of human hibernation. So writes Graham Robb, a British scholar who has studied the sleeping habits of the French peasants. As soon as the weather turned cold, people all over France shut themselves away and practiced the forgotten art of doing nothing at all for months on end.In line with this, Jeff Warren, a producer at CBC Radio's The Current, tells us that the way we sleep has changed fundamentally since the invention of artificial (人造的) lighting and the electric bulb. When historians began studying texts of the Middle Ages, they noticed something referred to as "first sleep", which was not clarified, though. Now scientists are telling us our ancestors most likely slept in separate periods. The business of eight hours' uninterrupted sleep is a modern invention. In the past, without the artificial light of the city to bathe in, humans went to sleep when it became dark and then woke themselves around midnight. The late night period was known as "The Watch". It was when people actually kept watch against wild animals, although many of them simply moved around or visited family and neighbours.According to some sleep researchers, a short period of insomnia (失眠) at midnight is not a disorder. It is normal. Humans can experience another state of consciousness aroundtheir sleeping, which occurs in the brief period before we fall asleep or wake ourselves in the morning. This period can be an extraordinarily creative time for some people. The impressive inventor, Thomas Edison, used this state to hit upon manyof his new ideas.Playing with your sleep rhythms can be adventurous, as anxiety may set in. Medical science doesn't help much in this case. It offers us medicines for a full night's continuous sleep, which sounds natural; however, according to Warren's theory, it is really the opposite of what we need.1. Sometimes, he lost a position with less than a day's notice. This wasn't due to a poor work ethic—from arriving early to staying late, Miles says he did everything he could to build a good relationshipwith employers. But because Miles had a criminal record, he was always cut loose when it came time to let staff go.It wasn't until October 2015, nearly a decade after his release from prison, that a cousin told Miles about Lancaster Food Company, a local business that focuses on hiring people released from prison. Hoping this would clear up what felt like a thick cloud of uncertainty over his future, Miles submitted an application. He got an interview, and he then began a new job.Miles' scenario is rare in Lancaster, where the poverty rate holds steady at 30%. This figure riled Charlie Crystle, Lancaster's co-founder and CEO. Crystle was raised in Lancaster but left in 1986 to purse a college degree and later, a career in technology. He co-founded four tech companies, one of which sold for millions of dollars back in 2000.Crystle is skeptical that many of Lancaster's low-income residents can get started the way he did. He believes food production is a key way to meet former offenders who may lack a college degree. Lancaster produces products like bread. Nowadays the company is rapidly expanding; however, at just 16 full-time employees, including administration and owners, it doesn't lower the city's poverty rate.Crystle says he wants to inspire other companies to rethink their current practices and start conversations around minimum wage and employment opportunities for everyone, including ex-offenders. Dan Jurman, who chairs the city's Commission to Combat Poverty, believes that Crystle's business is a great way to make this happen. "None of us can handle these issues alone, " he said.5. The purpose of the first paragraph is to show __________ .A. a man's difficulty in living a stable lifeB. an increasingly competitive workplaceC. a decrease in employment opportunitiesD. the reason why Lancaster Food Company was founded6. What does the underlined word "riled" in Paragraph 3 most probably mean?A. Annoyed.B. Discouraged.C. Amused.D. Embarrassed.7. What words can best describe Charlie Crystle according to the text?A. Outgoing, kind and considerate.B. Wealthy but a little bit greedy.C. Humorous, diligent and ambitious.D. Successful and socially responsible.8. In Dan Jurman's opinion, what is the biggest achievement of Lancaster Food Company?A. It greatly increases employment opportunities.B. It suggests an idea for fighting poverty.C. It provides a way to handle ex-offenders.D. It creates a stable environment for people.Ⅱ.完形填空阅读下面的短文,从短文后各题所给的A、B、C和D四个选项中,选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。

ALots of students know what a marathon(马拉松赛跑) is, but perha ps they don’t know what triathlon is. The triathlon is a sport that has three parts — swimming, bicycling and running. It is not an easy sport, but a man named Joe Salter is very good at it. A few months ago, he finished a special triathlon—he juggled(抛起接住) three balls all the time during the triathlon. That is to say, he kept on throwing and catching three balls while he was swimming, riding a bicycle and running.31-year-old Joe is from Florida, the USA. He loves juggling and he started at the age of 8. Joe did well in juggling. Later, he got the idea to do a triathlon and juggle at the same time to make it more fun. Many juggling fans laughed at his idea and thought it was just a joke. But Joe didn’t give up and he kept practicing it. Because of his hard work, he made it at last.Talking about his triathlon, Joe said swimming was the hardest part. “It was difficult and complex,” he said. “I basically only used my legs, so it took quite a lot of work. It was just standing there, with father standing on one side, and me on the other side.We were both in great anger. “Never set foot in this house again!” stormed father. With tears welling up in my eyes, I rushed out of the flat and ran along the street. The street lights were shining, causing rather sad feelings. I wandered aimlessly.A young father who held a child in his arms walked past me. I felt as if I saw my childhood from another space: happy and carefree. But now … I don’t know whether it is because I have grown up or because dad is getting old. We differ in our ways of thinking. We are just like two people coming from two different worlds. It feels like there is an iron door between us that can never be opened. I wandered the streets, without a destination in mind. My heart was frozen on this hot summer night. As I walked on, there were fewer and fewer people on the streets, until I had only the street lights to keep me company. When I finally reached the high-rise ap artment block in which I lived, I saw that the light was still on.. I thought to myself: “Is father waiting for me, or is he still angry with me?” In fact, it was nothing. Perhaps, dad was throwing away some of his old stamps. Perhaps he thought they were useless. I never had the courage to tell him that I liked collecting stamps. All the lights were off except father’s. Dad was always like this. Maybe he didn’t know how to express himself. After shouting at me, he never showed any mercy or any moments of regret. This was how he always was. He has been a leader for so long that telling everyone else what to do has become his second nature. The light was still on. “Am I wrong?” I whispered, maybe… With the key in my hand, I was as nervous as I had ever been. At last, I decided to open the door. As soon as I opened the door, tears ran down my cheeks. I suddenly realized that the iron door that I had imagined between us did not exist at all. Love----it’s second to none.5.Which is the correct order of the following events according to the passage?a. I opened the door and entered the house.b. I ran out into the street angrily.c. I reached the place where I lived and saw my house still brightly lit.d. I recalled my happy childhood.e. The author’s father opened the door for him when he came back.7. According to the author, why did his father often shout at him?A. Perhaps the father was getting older and older.B. Perhaps the son had already grown up.C. Perhaps they never agreed with each other.D. Perhaps the father had been used to doing that.8. What did the author mean by the underlined sentence “My heart was frozen on this hot summer night”?A. He felt lonely because there were so few people on the street.B. He felt uncomfortable because it was a very hot night.C. He was completely disappointed with his father.D. He was at a loss because he had nowhere to go.CFor more than twenty years scientists have been searching for signs of life on other planets. Most of these searches have been done over the radio. The hope is that someone in outer space may be trying to get in touch with us. Scientists also have sent radio and television messages on spaceships travelling through space, on the chance that someone may be receptive to such messages.Scientists are using powerful radio telescopes to listen to signals from about 1,000 stars, all within 100 light ye ars of Earth. In addition, they scan the entire sky to “listen” for radio messages from more distant stars. Using a computer, they will be able to monitor more than eight channels at a time. Scientists are looking for any signal that stands out from the background noise.Of the 200 billion stars in the Milky Way Galaxy (银河星系), scientists find that five percent are like our sun. Perhaps half of them have a planet like Earth. Such a planet would be a reasonable distance from the star for temperatures to be right for the evolution (进化) of life. Based on the inhabitable (that can be lived in) planets in our Galaxy, most scientists agree that chances are likely that one or more of these planets support some life. However, many scientists wonder whether intelligent life exists on other planets. Some believe that twenty years of searching without any intelligible messages shows that no one is out there. They say that the evolution of intelligence comparable to ours is unlikely.Other scientists believe that our search hasn't been long enough to rule out the possibility that intelligent life exists in our Galaxy. Although our sun family is only about five billion years old, our Galaxy is about 20 billion years old. In that case, some scientists think that it is likely that civilization much more advanced than ours have developed. Perhaps these civilizations send us no signals, perhaps we have not recognized the signals they have sent us. If we hope to find intelligent life, these scientists believe that we have to keep looking.9.The first two paragraphs in the text are mainly about ________ scientists are looking for signs of life on other planets.A. whenB. whyC. whereD. how10.According to the text, how many planets in our Galaxy might be inhabitable?A. 5 billion.B. 10 billion.C. 15 billion.D. 200 billion.11.Why do some scientists think there might be more advanced civilizations on other planets?A. They are good at observing everything in the sky.B. Some planets in our Galaxy are much younger than Earth.C. They have been to some of the other planets in our Galaxy.D. Some planets in our Galaxy are much older than Earth.12.It can be learned from the text that ________.A. the sun is one of the oldest planets in our GalaxyB. some scientists think that we should continue the searchC. scientists don't believe that there might be life on other planetsD. most scientists believe that there is intelligent life on other planetsDIf you're ever apart from your children, a new study says just talking on the phone will help just as much as a hug.If you're a parent who spends long hours on the job, you probably feel sorry for spending so much time away from your kids. But the results of a new study show that a mother's voice alone can be just as comforting to an anxious child as physical contact .In an experiment, researchers from the University of Wisconsin Madison asked a group of girls between the ages of 7 and 12 to solve math problems in front of judges — a stressful situation for anyone. Before the girls were set to give their answers, the researchers measured their levels of two hormones (荷尔蒙): cortisol, which goes up during stressful periods, and oxytocin, the "love" hormone, which goes down at the same time. After the girls finished the problems, some of them got to meet up with their mothers right away. The moms came in and hugged the girls. Another group of the girls didn't see their mothers, but received phone calls from them, in which their mothers told them how well they'd done. The final group had no contact with their mothers, but instead watched an animal movie, March of the Penguins. Finally, the girls' hormone levels were measured again. Although the movie was interesting, it did nothing to reduce the children's anxiety — but, surprisingly, both the physical contact and phone calls from their mothers had the same effect on reducing the girls' stress levels. So, no matter how old you are, if you're feeling stressed about something in your life, a phone call to Mom might be just the key to help you feel better.13. If a girl is under stress, .A. she can't solve math problemsB. she will have high levels of hormoneC. oxytocin will remain at a high levelD. cortisol will go up with oxytocin down14. From the passage, we can infer that .A. it is easy for girls to solve math problemsB. the girls who had watched the movie remained anxiousC. mothers should hug their kids as often as possibleD. older girls have higher cortisol than younger ones15. What's the main idea of the passage?A. Mother's voice can comfort her anxious kids.B. Mothers should often hug their kids.C. Mothers should spend enough time caring about their kids.D. Scientists discovered why kids become stressed when having tests.第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,共10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的七个选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

In fact, he's one of your best reporters. He wants to leave.Your reporter gave me a copy of his resume (简历)and photocopies of six stories that he wrote for you. The headlines showed you played them proudly. With great enthusiasm, he talked about how he finds issues (问题), approaches them, and writes about them, which tells me he is one of your best. I'm sure you would hate to lose him. Surprisingly, your reporter is not unhappy. In fact, he told me he really likes his job. He said he has a great assignment (分工), and you run a great paper. It would be easy for you to keep him, he said. He knows that the paper values him. He appreciates the responsibility you've given him, takes ownership of his profession, and enjoys his freedom. So why is he looking for a way out?He talked to me because he wants his editors to demand so much more of him. He wants to be pushed, challenged, coached to new heights. The reporter believes that good stories spring from good questions, but his editors usually ask how long the story will be, where it can be played, and what the budget is.He longs for conversations with an editor who will help him turn his good ideas into great ones. He wants someone to get excited about what he's doing and to help him turn his story idea upside down andinside out, exploring the best ways to report it. He wants to be more valuable for your paper. That's what you want for him, too, isn't it?So your reporter has set me thinking. Our best hope in keeping our best reporters, copy editors, photographers, artists—everyone—is to work harder to make sure they get the help they are demanding to reach their potential. Having enough free time is more important to most Americans than being rich, according to a new poll.Only 13 percent of more than 2,400 people questioned in the telephone poll ranked beingwealthy as most important to them, while 67 percent ranked free time as their top priority, higher than having a successful career, getting married, and having children. "Everyone wants free time to do the things they want to do, young, middle-aged or old," said Richard Morin, of the Pew Social & Demographic Trends Project, which conducted the survey. "So our desire to play unites us. "The poll also showed that people who were university educated valued career success over wealth, so did middle-aged people. Not surprisingly, those who didn't have money, ranked wealth very highly. This included minorities, first generation Americans and less educated people. The survey also revealed that a disproportionate(不成比例的)number of people under the age of 30 and retirees in the group made $20,000 or less a year. But the emphasis on wealth lessens with age, with younger people putting value on it but hardly any seniors. "It just diminishes with time as the reality sets in that you would never be rich," Morin said. "But also, the reality sets in that you don't have to be rich to lead a very comfortable and fulfilling life. "While wealth was not at the top of people's list of priorities, 43 percent still said it was somewhat important.44. The win made Wallace the second African-American driver in the history of NASCAR to win a race at the sport's top level.“We congratulate Darrell Wal lace Jr. on his first national series victory, one that will be remembered as a remarkable (不同寻常的) moment in our sport's history,” said Brian France, NASCAR chairman and CEO. “Darrell's success, following fellow NASCAR Drive for Diversity graduate Kyle Larson's win earlier this season, is indicative (表明) of a youth and multicultural movement that is a good sign for NASCAR's future growth.”Darrell Wallace Jr. was born October 8, 1993, in Mobile, Alabama. He got his start in NASCAR through the organization's Drive for Diversity program. It was created in 2004 to attract more women and nonwhite drivers and crew members to NASCAR events. Before Wallace's 2013 win, the only other black driver to win at NASCAR was Wendell Scott, in 1963.
