I . Word Building

1 The suffixes -er, or -or, can be added to verbs to nouns and then

define them in English.

①. observe- observer: one who observes a person or an event

② ski--skier: one who is

③ visit --visitor: one who visits somebody or some place

④ learn--learner: one who learns something

⑤ report--reporter: one who reports on persons or event for a

newspaper.

⑥drink--drinker: one who often drinks alcohol, esp. too much

2 The suffix –ous can be added to noun to form adjectives with the

meaning “having much”, “full of” or “causing”. The suffix-al can

also be added to form adjectives with the meaning “related to”, or

“of”.

Now form adjectives by adding –ous or –al to the nouns given

below. Make changes in spelling where necessary. Then complete

the following sentences with the adjectives which have been thus

formed

II Sentence Structure

Study the model and rewrite each of the following sentences with

the preposition “despite”

Model1: the president went to the dinner though he was seriously ill.

2. Though it was raining heavily, the boys played football in the

yard all afternoon.

3. I will try my best though the chances of success are slim.

4. Though they searched for the escaped prisoner in the mountain,

no sign of him was found.

5. Though their income was increased, their life became poorer

because of the rising prices.
