After watching my son Todd run in an annual race, I made my usual comment,
“Todd, I could walk faster than those women run." Todd laughed as he knew I wasn't
a runner."Listen, Mom, I want you to show by your actions. How about you running
with me next year at this race?” Without thinking, I quickly agreed to this challenge.
But when it was almost time for this race to occur, Todd wasn't going to be
running. He was sent to Africa as a soldier for three years. A few of his friends knew
this “challenge" I had agreed to with Todd. They started to encourage me to run the
race. I hadn't trained or anything. Quite frankly, I had almost forgotten I said I would
do it.
I decided I should keep my promise to Todd and run the race. The first thing I
did was go out and buy some running clothes. I might as well look good, was my
thought, even though I hadn't trained at all.
The day of the race came. I was not well prepared, but I started off. It wasn't long
before some guy on the roadside started to run next to me. I wasn't in the talking
mood. However, this guy was very talkative. He kept making remarks on how tired he
was, and I must be tired too. The race was over, and this guy's wife won! I was just
happy to finish and keep my promise to Todd.
I came home, and my neighbor asked about the race. I told him what had
happened and how this guy would not shut up his negative talk. My neighbor laughed
and set me straight,' "Kay, don't you know what this guy was doing? He thought you
were the competition (竞争对手) by the way you were dressed. He wanted his wife to
win.” Oh really!?

答案
One possible version:
This guy's attitude built a fire in me for the next race! If he thought I was the
competition, I was going to be the competition. In the next few months, I trained hard,
whether rainy or sunny. Sometimes I was burned out, but I was determined that
nothing would weigh me down. I even bought some tapes talking about how to run a
race and listened to them daily. Both my speed and confidence grew with each
passing day. As the race got near, I felt well prepared.
The race began on a cold day and I saw this guy and his wife. “This time I'll
have to win!" I said to myself. Freezing cold as it was, I ran with only a sleeveless
shirt and shorts on. I stayed close behind this guy's wife almost the whole race. And
then this guy came near us! I'll never forget his words to his wife, “Watch out! She's
right behind you." Well, I wouldn't let it happen anymore! With every bit of strength I
ran right past her and won the race! I fell on the grass, and wept happy tears.

If you ask me whether you should say yes to walk your neighbor’s dog, my
answer would be a definite “Yes”,as long you do one thing I didn’t do when I
helped out with my neighbor’s dog. Here’s what I meant. You don’t need to ask your
neighbor lots of questions about that particular dog, but just be patient to ask one very
important question. Here is why.
Mrs. Gonzales and her adorable dog Rascal, live at the end of my street. My
friend Ollie and I have played with Rascal since he was a puppy, so when Mrs.
Gonzales asked if we’d like to take him to the park once in a while, we can’t wait to
says, “When can we start?” “How about this Saturday at 3: 00?”she suggested.
When Saturday rolled around, Ollie and I were there to pick up Rascal at 3: 00
on time. “Rascal will be so happy to play in the park with you! “ Mrs Gonzales said.
“If I’m still out grocery shopping when you return, just let yourselves in with this
spare key. I’ll be home a little while later.”
“Also, why do you think I named him Rascal? If there’s trouble, such as puddles,
this guy is guaranteed to find it. And also the commands that you should .....” When
we realized that Mrs Gonzales had lots of “alsos”, we interrupted her and ran away in
the blink of an eye.
Not long after we arrived at the park, Rascal found a giant puddle and jumped
into it and rolled around until every square inch of his furry body was dripping with
mud. “Ugh! silly puppy, you’re the muddiest dog in the universes!” I said. Ollie said
we should take him back home so he can get washed up.
But when we got to Mrs. Gonzales’s house, she didn’t answer the doorbell. “ She
must still be out grocery shopping, “ I said. “ How about we use the garden tube to
