They encouraged me on the days that I struggled and scolded me when I tried to slack off. Without someone to hold you accountable, it’s way too easy to give up on your goals.The final tip I have is to wait patiently for the moment that you begin to love running—yet another event that I never thought would happen in my life. It took some time, but eventually running became such a big part of my life that I felt incomplete when I didn’t do it. If you take the pledge, you can teach your children to take the pledge and avoid that phone call. Imagine not taking the pledge today, and wrecking your car tomorrow. In a world where people did not text and drive, there would be 1.6 million less car accidents each year. Thousands of lives could be saved if today’s society did not text and drive. There would be fewer parents burying their children because the 16 percent of fatal accidents that involve distracted driving would not occur. Children would be able to play outside and not have to worry about a distracted driver veering off the road and ending their lives. If you adopt the “No PhoneZone” policy, or pledge “The Great Hang Up” the world would become one step closer to road safety.Signpost: Endless benefits would occur if the world pledged to stop texting and driving, and we can start the change right here in this classroom.V. Action:Not only is texting while driving illegal, but it is also dangerous to every driver on the road, and even bystanders or pedestrians. It is a huge issue for so many students that it must be discussed. Otherwise, we can continue to see news reports of teens beaten and bruised, teens bloody and scared, teens mutilated, raped, or killed. Some may argue that violence in schools will continue no matter what is taught. But the truth is, talking to students about homosexuality reduces hate crimes, and violence overall.Lastly, talking about homosexuality in schools helps to foster tolerance of people who are different from us. When we learn about gay people, we learnabout different races, we learn about different genders, and we learn about different cultures. When a group of students were studying World War II, they found out about how Hitler killed the homosexuals before he killed Jews. This example shows how homosexuality is not just an American issue, or even a modern issue. It is an issue that reaches across cultural, racial, and ethnic boundaries. One high school teacher, Eri n Hunt, explains: “Last year, when I taught a World War II unit, we talked about how Hitler killed gay people, and made them wear pink triangles, like Jews had to wear yellow stars. Talking about the homosexual victims of the holocaust made my students see that no one was safe under the dictatorship of Hitler. They understood that a lot more, because we talked about homosexuality.” By learning about homosexuality, students start to think about other issues faced by people. This helps them connect issues to their world, and to the world outside the school. It has been said that homosexuality has nothing to do with school curriculum. That is simply not true.
