The children were surveyed between 2003 and 2007.The researchers defined adequate physical activity as at least an hour of exercise outside of gym class at least five days a week. Children who spent three or more hours a day watching TV,playing computer games, or chatting with friends—aside from time in school or time spent doing homework—were classified as sedentary. The researchers found only one quarter of the boys and 15 percent of the girls were getting enough exercise by these definitions. A quarter of boys and nearly 30 percent of girls were sedentary and didn't get enough exercise with girls less active than boys in every country aside from Zambia.Uruguay had the highest percentage of active boys, at 42 percent, while Zambia had the lowest, at 8 percent. Girls from India were the most active, with 37 percent meeting exercise recommendation, while girls from Egypt were the least active, with just 4 percent getting adequate exercise. Children in Myanmar were the least sedentary, with 13 percent of boys and 8 percent of girls classified as sedentary. The most sedentary nations were St. Lucia and the Cayman Islands, with 58 percent of boys and 64 percent of girls spending at least three hours a day in sedentary activities.People show deep concern for kids' lack of physical activity in various nations. Why do they have a low level of physical activity? Guthold speculated(推测)that urbanization(都市化) could be a factor as well as access to cars and TVs.16.If you are sedentary, you________.A.are a diligent student spending much time doing homeworkB.have at least an hour of exercise outdoors every dayC.like watching TV and playing computer gamesD.spend a lot of time sitting down and not moving17.Which statement is TRUE about the finding of the study, led by Regina Guthold?A.Most children around the world don't meet the exercise recommendation.B.Girls in every country are no more active than boys.C.Children in rich countries relatively get less physical activities.D.Only 4 percent of the girls from Egypt are not active in exercise.18.Which could be the best title of the passage?A.American children are addicted to TVs and computersB.Nearly one third of children globally are couch potatoesC.Effects of physical activities on healthD.Unimaginable standard of physical health19.What would the writer be most likely to discuss in detail in the following paragraphs?A.The suitable amount of physical activities for students.B.Some of the factors for the popularity of cars and TVs among the kids.C.The reasons behind the lack of physical activities.D.The ways to make the most of physical activities.Ⅲ.阅读表达阅读下面短文并回答问题。

Despite(尽管) the distance the islands actually make up the fiftieth state of the United States. The islands were all formed by volcanic eruption and on the largest of the islands, Hawaii, or the Big Island, there are still two active volcanoes, the Mauna Loa and the Kilauea, which still erupt every few years. On the Hawaiian islands the natives have a particularly strange way of indicating directions. They don’t use the north, south, east and west system common to the rest of the world. They use the mauka and makai system. Mauka means “mountain”. The mountains in Hawaii are always at the center of the islands, as these are volcanic islands. Makai means “the sea”. The islands are small and the system is simple. Wherever you want to visit, it can always be described in terms of where it lies in relation to the mountains and the sea. A typical conversation between a native Hawaiian and a tourist might go as follow.TOURIST: Excuse me! Could you tell me where the Sheraton Hotel is?HAWAIIAN: Well… Let me see! From here it’s two blocks mauka, and then one block makai. You can’t miss it!1. This passage would be most likely to appear in which of the following?A. A novel.B. A collection of stories.C. To find your way in Hawaii, you must .A.refer to geographical directionsB.refer to well-known establishmentsC.refer to the earth and the seaD.refer to the location of the mountains and the seaBStatus of Judicial System in the USAIn recent years, there has been an increasing awareness of the inadequacies of the judicial system in the United States. Costs are staggering both for the taxpayers and the parties-and the parties have to wait sometimes many years before having their day in court. Many suggestions have been made concerning methods of improving the situation, but as in most branches of government, changes come slowly. One suggestion that has been made in order to maximize the efficiency of the system is to allow districts that have an overabundance of pending cases to borrow judges from other districts that do not have such a backlog. Another suggestion is to use pretrial conferences, in which the judge meets in his chambers with the parties and their attorneys in order to narrow the issues, limit the witnesses, and provide for a more orderly trial. The theory behind pretrial conferences is that judges will spend less time on each case and parties will more readily settle before trial when they realize theadequac y of their claims and their opponents’ evidence. Unfortunately, at least one study has shown that pretrial conferences actually use more judicial time than they save, rarely result in pretrial settlements, and actually result in higher damage settlements. Many states have now established another method, small-claims courts, in which cases over small sums of money can be disposed of with considerable dispatch. Such proceedings cost the parties almost nothing, In California, for example, the parties must appear before the judge without the assistance of counsel. The proceedings are quite informal and there is no pleading-the parties need to make only a one-sentence statement of their claim. By going to this type of court, the plaintiff waives any right to a jury trial and the right to appeal the decision. In coming years, we can expect to see more and more innovations in the continuing effort to remedy a situation which must be remedied if the citizens who have valid claims are going to be have their day in court.6. The pretrial conference, in theory, is supposed to do all of the following except_____.A.narrow the issuesB.cause early settlementC.save judicial timeD.increase settlement cost7. What is the main topic of the passage?A.All states should follow Californ ia’ s example in using small-claims courts inorder to free judges for other work.B.The legislature needs to formulate fewer laws so that the judiciary can catchup on its older cases.C.Nobody seems to care enough to attempt to find method for making thejudicial system more efficient.D.While there are many problems with the court system, there are viablesuggestions, for improvement.8. The word “parties” means mostly _______.A.jury membersmentatorsC.parties in a lawsuitD.taxpayers9. Which of the following is true about small-claim courts?A.It is possible to have one’s case heard by a jury if he or she is dissatisfiedwith the court’s decision.B.The parties must plead accurately and according to a strict form.C.The decision may not be appealed to a higher court.D.The parties may not present their cases without an attorney’ s help.10. What can we assume from the passage?A.Most people who feel they have been wronged have a ready remedy in courtsof law.B.Many people would like to bring a case to court, but are unable to because ofthe cost and the time required.C.The judicial system in the US is highly acclaimed for its efficiency.D.Pretrial conferences will someday probably have replaced trials completely.CIn today's Ireland, it seems hard to imagine the grim days of the 19th century when so many of the population starved, or that, in those days, many poor people had no clue how to prepare any food other than boil a potato. Nowadays, it is quite possible to eat both well and heartily all over the island.Tourism has made a vast difference to the standards of cooking in Ireland. Until recently there was hardly any tradition of eating out in many districts, except perhaps on very few occasions at a local hotel. Patterns of diet were old-styled, based firmly on 'meat and two vegetables' (somewhat overcooked), potatoes (of course) and large quantities of dairy produce. Now things are very different. Tourist demands for predictable, inexpensive fast-food are met, as everywhere, with hamburgers and pizzas - a better bet being fish and chips. But more sophisticated tastes have introduced wholefoods and vegetarian restaurants (almost unheard of before), and avast number of new restaurants, often French in style, have opened in the main tourist centres. Food 'events' such as Kinsale's Gourmet festival or Galway's Oyster Festival attract large numbers of visitors and reflect the new interest in food.Whatever Irish cooking lacks in finesse(精细), it nearly always makes up for in plenty, and ingredients(成分) are of a high quality. Home-grown produce includes rich dairy foods, beef, lamb and pork, and a great variety of seafood. One of its great specialities is soda bread. It is made with buttermilk and is served fresh and warm with every meal. Recently there has been a return to simple Irish foods such as stews(炖菜)and potato dishes. One of the best-value meals in Ireland is breakfast. A 'traditional Irish breakfast' is a plateful of bacon and eggs with soda and potato breads. Accommodation rates are nearly always quoted with a full breakfast included, so you might as well eat enough to keep you going all day and get your money's worth!11.What was Irish food like until quite recently?A. It was very conservative and uninteresting.B. It was influenced by French cooking.C. It was very unhealthy.D. It was plentiful12.How has Irish food improved in recent years?A. There are more French restaurants.B. Food produce is fresher.C. There is more kinds.D. Food is more expensive13.What is the main reason for this improvement?A. People have more money to spend.B. The development of tourism.C. People have more tastes today.D. Young people dislike traditional food14.How does the passage describe Irish cooking today?A. It is exciting and interesting.B. It is boring and overcooked.C. It is plentiful and simple.D. It is good-looking and tastes bad15.Which of the following statements is true according to the text?A. Eating out at weekends is traditional in most parts of Ireland.B. Today most Irish people prefer fast-foods to the traditional Irish cooking.C. Nowadays French-style restaurants are quite common in tourist centres.D. Many Irish people are vegetarians and grow their own vegetables.DA Tour City ------- PompeiiEvery year thousands of tourists visit Pompeii (庞贝,意大利那不勒斯附近一座古城) , Italy. They see the sights that Pompeii is famous for ------ its stadium (运动场) and theatre, its shops and restaurants. The tourists do not, however, see Pompeii’s people. It lay at the foot of Mount Vesuvius (维苏威火山) , a grass-covered volcano (火山). Mount Vesuvius had not erupted (爆发) for centuries, so the people of Pompeii felt safe. But they were not.In August of AD 79, Mount Vesuvius erupted. The entire top of the mountain exploded, and a huge black cloud rose into the air. Soon stones and hot ash began to fall on Pompeii. When the eruption ended two days later, Pompeii was buried (埋藏) under 20 feet of stones and ashes. Almost all of its people were dead. For centuries, Pompeii lay buried under stone and ash. Then, in the year 1861, an Italian scientist named Ginseppe began to uncover (发现) Pompeii. Slowly, carefully, Ginseppe and his men dug. The city looked almost the same as it had looked in AD 79. There were streets and fountains, houses and shops. There was a stadium with 20, 000 seats. Perhaps the most important of all, there were everyday objects, which tell us a great deal about the people who lived in Pompeii. Many glasses and jars had some dark blue colour in the bottom, so we know that the people of Pompeii liked wine. They liked bread, too; metal bread pans were in even bakery (面包房). In one bakery there were 81 round, flat loaves of bread ------- a type of bread that is still sold in Italy today. Tiny boxes filled with a dark, shiny powder tell us that women liked to weareye-makeup (眼部化装品) .Ginseppe has died, but his work continues. One-fourth has not been uncovered yet. Scientists are still digging, still making discoveries that draw the tourists to Pompeii. 16.Why do large numbers of people come to Pompeii each year?A.To visit the volcano.B. B. Unit 2 The United KingdomSailors used to speak of a “Jack” when they meant a flag which was set near the bow of a sailing ship. The flag showed the country to which the ship belonged. The Union Jack became the flag of Great Britain.Australia's flag has the Union Jack in the top left hand corner together with the stars of the Southern Cross. They have kept this small part of Britain on their flag because their country was first settled by people from Britain.Australia's flag is the same colour as the Union Jack—red, white and blue. The act of joining together is called a “Union”.The Union Jack was the name of the flag made when England,Scotland and Ireland joined together to make one country. It all began in 1707 when England and Scotland joined together to become one nation.A flag was made using two crosses—one for the patron saint (守护神) of each country. The word “patron”means protector. Many centuries before the English had taken St George as their patron saint, his emblem(标志) was a red cross on a white background. The Scottish patron saint was St Andrew. In memory of him, they used a white cross on a blue background. This cross was shaped like the letter “X”.The new flag was a mixture of both flags with two sets of crosses. When Ireland joined England and Scotland in 1800,another cross was added.St Patrick's cross of Ireland was red and also shaped like an “X”.All three flags made up the Union Jack.【词海拾贝】1.bow n.船首2.settle v.殖民;作为移民在殖民地定居3.saint n.圣人4.background n.背景【问题思考】True(T)or False(F):1.The Scottish patron saint was St George.( )2.The Union Jack is the flag of Australia.( Migrants (移民) to the UK are to be tested about their English skills before being able to ask for income-related benefits (福利),the government has announced. In a move to make the benefit system reasonable, people will also be asked what efforts they have made to find work before coming to Britain.Work and Pensions Secretary,Iain Duncan Smith, said people should not be able to take advantage of British benefits.Job centers in England Scotland and Wales will use the strictest test. The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) said the test would ensure only migrants who have a legal right to be in Britain and plan to contribute (贡献) to this country can ask for benefits.“For the first time, migrants will be tested about what efforts they have made to find work before coming to the UK,and whether their English language skills will be a barrier to them finding jobs,” the DWPsaid.Mr Duncan Smith said British people are rightfully concerned that migrants should contribute to the country and should not be here for the attractiveness of the benefit system. He said the new test would help create a fair system, which provided for genuine workers and jobseekers, but didn't allow people to come and take advantages. To ask for the benefits, migrants will have to pass a habitual residence test(常居审核), including more than 100 extra questions compared to now. Migrants will be allowed to ask for benefits if they can prove they are legally allowed to be in Britain and are habitually resident in the country. As part of this they might be questioned about what measures they have taken to make themselves in Britain and what relationships they still have abroad. They will also have to provide more evidence that they are doing everything they can to find a job.1.According to the passage, migrants to the UK should be tested to ________.A.manage their incomeB.improve their English skillsC.make them find work easilyD.make the benefit system reasonable2.In Iain Duncan Smith's opinion,________.A.all people living in the UK could enjoy British benefitsB.people planning to contribute to the UK can get British benefits C.the former test was too easyD.it's hard to find work in Britain3.The underlined word “barrier” in Paragraph 3 probably means ________.A.problem B.lessonC.job D.friend4.It can be inferred from the last paragraph that________.A.many migrants didn't take measures to improve their EnglishB.migrants must answer over 100 questions before getting jobsC.it will be harder for migrants to get benefits than beforeD.good relationships abroad are more important than good jobs第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

2.fixing→fixed表达“某人盯着……”常用sb fixed his eyes on...,可见eyes与fix之间为动宾关系,需用过去分词形式作eyes的宾语补足语。
3.put→putting catch sb doing sth为固定短语,意为“抓住/看见某人正在做某事”。
4.turning→turned因为“朝向他的爸爸”这一动作是主语“The boy”发出的动作,而不是“his back”,所以his back与turn to为动宾关系,故用turn的过去分词形式作宾语补足语。
5.inform→informed inform sb sth“通知/告知某人某事”,为习惯用语,keep sb. informed of...
8.arrange后加for“安排某人做某事”不能表达为arrange sb to do sth,而应该是arrange for sb to do sth。
