One trouble never comes alone.CAre you sometimes a little tired and sleepy in the early afternoon? Many people feel this way after lunch. They may think that eating lunch is the cause of the sleepiness. Or, in summer, they may think it is the heat. However, the real reason lies inside their bodies. At that time—about eight hours after you wake up—your body temperature goes down. This is what makes you slow down and feel sleepy. Scientists have tested sleep habits in experiments where there was no night or day. The people in these experiments almost always followed a similar sleeping pattern. They slept for one long period and then for one short period about eight hours later. In many parts of the world, people take naps(小睡;打盹) in the middle of the day. This is especially true in warmer climates, where the heat makes work difficult in the early afternoon. Researchers are now saying that naps are good for everyone in any climate. A daily nap gives one a more rested body and mind and therefore is good for health in general. In countries where naps are traditional, people often suffer less from problems such as heart disease. Many working people, unfortunately, have no time to take naps. Though doctors may advise taking naps, employers do not allow it! If you do have the chance, however, here are a few tips about making the most of your nap. Remember that the best time to take a nap is about eight hours after you get up. A short sleep too late in the day may only make you feel more tired and sleepy afterward. This can also happen if you sleep for too long. If you do not have enough time, try a short nap—even ten minutes of sleep can be helpful.8. Why do you sometimes feel sleepy in the early afternoon?A. Because you eat too much for lunch.B. Because it’s hot in summer.C. Because your body temperature goes down at that time.D. Beca use you didn’t have a good sleep last night.9. What can we learn about “naps” according to the last paragraph?A. All the people in warmer climates take naps in the middle of the day.B. Doctors need to take naps while employers don’t.C. If you take naps everyday, you’11 never suffer from heart disease.D. Taking naps regularly is beneficial to people’s health.10. What can we infer from the passage?A. You’ll feel sleepy at regular intervals(间隔).B. Taking a nap whenever you want will do good to your health.C. You will feel less sleepy if you sleep for a long time.D. If you get up at 6:30 am, you’d better take a nap at about 1:30 pm.11. What would be the best title for the text?A. Just for a RestB. All for a NapC. A Special Sleep PatternD. Then she waited alone for three hours while armed police prepared to storm the building. She said, “I was very nervous. She said, “He didn’t seem to want to talk too much or mak e any eye contact.” Vicki, the only employee on duty, called her bosses Margaret, 64, and her husband Stall McKale,65, who phoned the police at 11 p.m.Officers from Northumbria Police called Vicki at the hotel in Dunston, Gateshead, at about 11:30 p.m. to make sure that this was the wanted man. Then they kept in touch by phoning Vicki every 15 minutes.“It was about ten past two in the morning when the phone went again and a policeman said ‘Would you go and make yourself known to the armed officers outside?’ My heart missed a beat.”Vicki quietly showed eight armed officers through passages and staircases to the top floor room and handed over the key.“I realized that my bedroom window overlooks that pair of the hotel, so I went to watch. I could not see into the man’s room, but I could see the passage (走廊). The police kept shouting at the man to come out with his hands showing. So prob ably, I’d say, reduce my car usage or transport usage. I do have a car and I need it to get to places as most people do. But currently, I don’t drive a car and I always take the bus to work so as to produce less carbon. Secondly, try to make use of our local food, which will be a huge help because it reduces the transportation of food. And I think in reality, we can produce a lot of what we need locally. I don’t think we should eat strawberries in autumn or winter. I mean we should try and eat food seasonally available to us. It’s good to our health and also uses less transportation. Finally, nor should we ignore the small things. If we have to go shopping, we should take our own bags. Where I live right now is a country that uses a lot of packaging and it makes me sad. And if we stop overusing plastics, we will not only reduce greenhouse effect but also save much energy.。

However, some of them were destroyed in the war and lie in ruins now, and I feel sorry that although the others survived the war, they just serve as store rooms. In my opinion, cultural relics belong to the whole world. 2015-2016学年高一上学期期末考试试卷英语(共150分,共120分钟)第一卷共100分一、听力(30分,每小题1.5分)略二、阅读理解(30分,每小题2分)AYesterday was awful. We had what they’re calling a “weather event” here, and it poured about 14 inches of rain in a day, causing by far the worst flash flooding I’ve seen in the 13 years in the place where we’ve lived. The kids and I ended up being trapped in our car in rapidly rising flood waters. The engine had stopped and couldn’t start again; the kids were terrified and I didn’t know what to do. Then a man in a 4WD pulled up beside us and offered to pull us out of the water. When he got us to higher ground he asked where our home was. We lived about 2km down the road, so he pulled us all the way back to our street before going off to look for more people in trouble.I don’t know this man and I ‘ll probably never see him again, but the kids and I owe him a huge debt of gratefulness that we’ll never be able to repay. Five local people died in this “weather event”, just a few streets away from here, so I’m in no doubt as to how dangerous our situation was. Going through what we went through has only reinforced(强化) the fact that we should always be ready and willing to help someone in need to stay safe and be well, whatever the situations are.21.What can we learn about the “weather event”?A. It was the biggest flood ever in this area.B. It rained for several days.C. Several people lost their lives in the event.D. Nobody was hurt in the event.22.Which statement is NOT TRUE about the man?A. He drove a car of great power.B. He left as soon as he pulled the author’s car out.C. He was willing to help those in trouble.D. He was a brave and selfless person.23. What is the author probably going to do after going through such a “weather event”?A. Be ready to give hands to others.B. Buy a car with a more powerful engine.C. Try hard to search for the man.D. Pay some money for the man’s help.24.Which one is the best title for the passage?A. A Weather EventB. The Kindness of a StrangerC. A Car Accident in FloodD. An Awful DayBDo two kids make a perfect family? Share your views about this issue on our website.LucinaWhen you decide to have another child , you should plan your budget(预算)in advance. If you or your parents can’t take care of your body, you have to at least spend an extra 5000 yuan per month to hire a body sitter. If you want to send your kids to study abroad, you have to save another 1 million yuan. I think most young Chinese couples cannot afford the expense.BcnuTwo is more than twice the work, there’s no guaranteeing(确保)they’ll share interests; they could very well fight or want to head off in completely different directions. If you find you love the second one more than the first, I don’t see how that could possibly make life simple, as children are very sensitive to that sort of thing. My advice is to take care of yourself and take time for your love for the first child to relax and grow before even thinking about having a second child.StevenI always thought having two kids sounded perfect. But when my daughter was born with life-threatening health problems I knew she would be my only kid. Raising our daughter was going to take a lot of emotional, physical, an d financial resources. If I had any more children, I don’t think I could handle it.WilliamUnder the one-child policy carried out in China for three decades, many kids are spoilt by their parents. The “little emperors” have no idea of sharing and giv ing and many of them even become self-centered. If we have another child, the first one will learn something about responsibility, sharing and caring for others.25.What can we learn from the passage?A.Few families are ready for a second child in China.B.It takes a lot of money to raise a second child.C.Steven has never considered having a second child.D.Many kids become selfish because of the one-child policy26.Of all the four persons, who is most likely to have a second child?A.LucinaB. Your car will change even more than that in the next 10 years. One of the big changes is that cars will drive themselves. Some day you may not need to drive a car. You will just tell the car where you want to go and it will drive itself.“We definitely have the technology for it now,” says Andrew Poliak of automotive technology supplier QNX. “We expect self-driving cars to be a mainstream thing between 2020 and 2025.”The American company Google has been working on a self-driving automobile for years. These cars are already on the roads in the United States, mainly in California. Google cars are truly self-driving. These cars haveno steering wheels(方向盘)or pedals(踏板)Last week, police ordered one of Google’s cars to stop for driving too slowly on a public road. Within days a cloud of some was hanging over neighbouring countries including Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand. When the smoke combined with pollution from factories and cars, it soon became poisonous(有毒的). Dangerous amounts of CO became trapped under the smog and pollution levels rose. People coughed as they left the house and their eyes watered immediately. The smog made it impossible to see across streets and whole cities disappeared as grey soot(烟灰)covered everything. In some areas, tap water was used from high-rise city buildings to try and break up the smog. Finally, heavy rains, which came in November, put out the fires and cleared the air. But the environmentalcosts and health problems will remain. Breathing problems could well increase and many non-sufferers may have difficulties for the first time. Wildlife has suffered too. In low-land forests, elephants, deer, and tigers have been driven out of their homes by smog. But smog is not just an Asian problem. In fact, the word was first used in London in 1905 to describe the mixture of smoke and thick fog.
AHeading off to college this year? Here are some fashion tips from our experts you should keep in mind:Dress to impress:Stylist and business consultant Daniela Smith says,“Girls should keep in mind that your college professors will often be the bridge that connects you to your future career and your classmates will become your professional network. You don't need to dress like you're going to the office, but you should display an ability to properly present yourself with appropriate maturity and confidence, and look puttogether.”Logo mania(品牌狂热症):Wearing the logos of brands aimed at younger customers physically identifies you as part of that age group,so consider the targeted age group of the stores you shop at.It's tempting to load up on logos, especially wellknown logos that signify highend brands. But consider this:college is a time of selfdiscovery,a chance to develop your own personal style.Instead of wearing logos head to toe,“walking advertisement”style, why not express who you really are?Wear real pants:The combination of leggings and baggy shirts is all too common on college campuses.Smith points out that leggings, yoga pants, and sweatpants are entirely unacceptable in public unless you're exercising.Although leggings worn as pants are a common trend among high school and college girls, they are not an appropriate choice for daywear. As a young woman, your style choice should begin to reflect your maturity level. So,get rid of leggings and wear real pants!Keep the cute factor to a minimum:Stay away from sweaters and Tshirts with smiling animals, cartoon characters,or Hello Kitty on them.Sure, kittens might be cute, but they're not doing you any favors in the style department.Dressing too cutesy can take years off your look, and not necessarily in a good way!21.The second paragraph indicates the importance of ________.A.impressing professors B.getting on well with classmatesC.creating a professional imag D.dressing appropriately22.The author recommends wearing real pants because ________________.A.leggings and baggy shirts are too common B.yoga pants and sweatpants are not so comfortableC.real pants can present you with appropriate maturity D.people like real pants better than the other pants 23.What's the writer's attitude towards sweaters with animals on them?A.They make people look lovely. D.They are not suitable for collegeaged students.24.In which magazine would you most likely find this passage?A.Business Week. B.Parents.C.Style. D.Travel & Leisure.BA year after graduation, I was offered a position teaching a writing class. Teaching was a profession I had never seriously considered, though several of my stories had been published. I accepted the job without hesitation, as it would allow me to wear a tie and go by the name of Mr. Davis. My father went by the same name, and I liked to imagine people getting the two of us confused. “Wait a minute<”someone might say, “are you talking about Mr. Davis the retired man, or Mr. Davis the respectable scholar?”The position was offered at the last minute, and I was given two weeks to prepare, a period I spent searching for briefcase (公文包) and standing before my full-length mirror, repeating the words, “Hello, class. I’m Mr. Davis.”Sometimes I would give myself an aggressive voice. Sometimes I would sound experienced. But when the dayeventually came, my nerves kicked in and the true Mr. Davis was there. I sounded not like a thoughtful professor, but rather a 12-year-old boy.I arrived in the classroom with paper cards designed in the shape of maple leaves. I had cut them myself out of orange construction paper. I saw nine students along a long table. I handed out the cards, and the students wrote down their names and fastened them to their breast pockets as I required.“All right then,”I said. “Okey, here we go.”Then I opened my briefcase and realized that I had never thought beyond this moment. I had been thinking that the students would be the first to talk, offering their thoughts and opinions on the events of the day. I had imagined that I would sit at the edge of the desk, overlooking a forests of hands. Every student would yell. “Calm down, you’ll all get your turn. One at a time, one at a time!”A terrible silence ruled the room, and seeing no other opinions, I inspected the students to pull out their notebooks and write a brief essay related to the theme of deep disappointment.25. The author took the job to teach writing because ______.A. he wanted to be expectedB. he had written some storiedC. he wanted to please his fatherD. he had dreamed of being a teacher26. The author chose the composition topic probably because ______.A. he got disappointed with his first classB. he had prepared the topic before classC. he wanted to calm down the studentsD. he thought it was an easy topicCGeorge Gershwin, born in 1898, was one of America’s greatest composers. He published his first song when he was eighteen years old. During the next twenty years he wrote more than five hundred songs. Many of Gershwin’s songs were first written for musical plays performed in theatres in New York City. These plays were a popular form of entertainment in the 1920s and 1930s. Many of his songs have remained popular as ever. Over the years they have been sung and played in every possible way—from jazz to country. In the 1920s there was a debate in the United States about jazz music. Could jazz, some people asked, be considered serious music? In 1924 jazz musician and orchestra leader Paul Whiteman decided to organize a special concert to show that jazz was serious music. Gershwin agreed to compose something for the concert before he realized he had just a few weeks to do it. And in that short time, he composed a piece for piano and orchestra which he called Rhapsody in Blue. Gershwin himself played the piano at the concert. The audience were thrilled when they heard his music. It made him world-famous and showed that jazz music could be both serious and popular. In 1928, Gershwin went to Paris. He applied to study composition(作曲)with the well-known musician Nadia Boulanger, but she rejected him. She was afraid that classical study would ruin his jazz-influenced style. While there, Gershwin wrote An American in Paris. When it was first performed, critics(评论家)were divided over the music. Some called it happy and full of life, to others it was silly and boring. But it quickly became popular in Europe and the United States. It still remains one of his most famous works.George Gershwin died in 1937, just days after doctors learned he had brain cancer. He was only thirty-nine years old. Newspapers all over the world reported his death on their front pages. People mourned the loss of the man and all the music he might have still written.28.What do we know about the concert organized by Whiteman?A.It attracted more people to theatres.B.It proved jazz could be serious music.C.It made Gershwin leader of the orchestra.D.It caused a debate among jazz musicians.29.What do we learn from the last paragraph?A.Many of Gershwin’s works were lost.B.The death of Gershwin was widely reported.C.A concert was held in memory of Gershwin.D.Brain cancer research started after Gershwin’s death.30.Which of the following best describes Gershwin?A.Talented and productive.B.Serious and boring.C.Popular and unhappy.D.Friendly and honest.第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。

书面表达
Dear Sir or Madam,
I’m a student from China and I’m writing to call your attention to the endangered
animal—Chinese Alligator.
Chinese Alligators are in danger of dying out because of human activities. Some
people are hunting them for money without mercy. What’s worse, their habitats are
being threatened and polluted. As a result, their numbers have decreased rapidly,
and only less than 200 remain at present.
We sincerely hope that WWF can play a role in protecting this endangered species. Firstly, could you help call on more people to protect them? Also, I wonder if you can help us build a reserve for them. Your efforts will surely make a difference.
Looking forward to your reply.
Yours Sincerely,
Li Hua。
