1984 is an English dystopian novel by George Orwell, published in 1949.Along with Brave New World,We,it is among the most famous dystopians in literature.
The story begins on April 4,1984,at 13:00.And the world has been broken into three parts.1984 introduces the international nation of Oceania, one of the world’s three superstates that is run by an oppressive totalitarian government in charge of the Party.
Throughout urban areas in Oceania are large two-way telescreens watching you every moment, and posters of “Big Brother”,the supposed leader of Oceania, with captions reading’Big Brother is watching you’.
Everyone is educated to love only Big Brother and the party. The government also creats a new speaking to control people’s thoughts.
People working in the ministry of truth spend their days contantly rewriting historical documents to match the contemporary party line that changes daily ,which includes destroying all evidence of how history has actually happpend.
The things reflected in 1984 can be seen happen in our true world.
The cult of personality for Big Brother reminds us of the Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution happened in China of 1960s.The Young League is similar to the Red Guards.
And,the governments in the world offer datas that express the big developments in economy, but we never know if it is true.
Orwell explains the reason in his essay why he wrote all the serious work.He wrote:‘Written, directly or indirectly, against totalitarianism and for democratic socialism.’Therefore, 1984 is an anti-totalitarian cautionary tale about the betrayal of a revolution by its defenders. Orwell believed that socialist revolution can save the democracy. He repeatedly expressed the idea that ‘If there is hopes,it lies in the proles’ in 1984.
Time Magazine selected it as one of the 100-best English language novels, from 1923 to the present. It has been translated into 62 languages, and has deeply impressed itself in the English language.1984,its items and language, and its author are byworks in discussions of personal privacy and state security.
According to Haruki Murakami’s words,1q84 was written in honor of 1984.
It is the novel that is worth you reading.。
