magazine feature writer. In 1892, married Sara White, but their

marriage wasn’t happy, so they have been separated since

novel, was withheld from general distribution because of it

was supposed amoral, and its commercial failure plunged him

into financial distress and mental breakdown. Some reasons

Introduction.

The author of Sister Carrie is Theodore dreiser. He was the first man of American contemporary

novels and one of the realistic writers. Dreiser was born in a bankrupt small business family in

Indiana in 1871, his childhood was in distress, not finished the middle school and he went to

Chicago to make a living with himself. In 1889, he was admitted into Indiana University to study,

but unfortunately dropped out again only one year later. Then he worked as bill collector、dishwasher、laundry washer、ticket inspector、furniture worker. Such kind of experience made

him contact with various people of lower class and unfair phenomena, which supported material

for hia creation. In 1892, he began his reporter career. In 1895, Dreiser moved to New York and

worked on writing, edited magazines as well. In 1900, he published his first long novel Sister
