All rain forests share certain ___31___ features, including a closed canopy, the dense vegetation of the top branches that forms a roof above the forest floor, a damp and warm climate, and ___32___ constant temperatures throughout the year. Most of the forest’s insect and animal life grows well in the canopy’s leafy and sunlit environment. The forest’s groundcover, by comparison, is small. Less than 2 percent of the sun’s light makes its way through the canopy and the darkness below. This darkness, along with the poor quality of the soils, ___33___ plant growth. Rain forests are a(n) ___34___ part of Earth’s total ecology. Huge amounts of water are absorbed into tree roots and ___35___ into the atmosphere from the tree leaves through a process called transpiration (蒸发). Tree roots also fix the soil in place and slow the runoff of rains into rivers and oceans. Through the process of photosynthesis (光合作用), rain forests absorb more carbon dioxide and give off more oxygen than any other ecosystem. The rain forests are ___36___ shrinking at a rapid rate as a result of the profitable ventures of farming, logging, and mining. When tropical rain forests are ___37___ in order to raise cattle and crops, the nutrient-poor soils are quickly ___38___. Usually large fires destroyed forests in these areas over the past decade. Scientists predict that with climate warming, fires may occur more frequently over the next several centuries as a result of a longer fire season. Sunlight taken in by the earth tends to cause warming, while heat mirrored back into space tends to cause cooling. This is the first study to analyze all aspects of how northern fires influence climate. Earlier studies by other scientists had suggested that fires in northern regions speed up climate warming because greenhouse gases from burning trees and plants were released into the atmosphere and thus trap heat.Scientists found that right after the fire, large amounts of greenhouse gases entered the atmosphere and caused warming. Ozone (臭氧) levels increased, and ashes from the fire fell on faroff sea ice, darkening the surface and causing more radiation from the sun to be taken in. The following spring, however, the land within the area of the fire was brighter than before the fire, because fewer trees covered the ground. Snow on the ground mirrored more sunlight back into space, leading to cooling.“We need to find out all possible ways to reduce the growth of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere,” scientists tracked the change in the amount of radiation entering and leaving the climate system as a result of the fire, and found a measurement closely related to the global air temperature. Typically, fire in northern regions occurs in the same area every 80 to 150 years. Scientists, however, found that when fire occurs more frequently, more radiation is lost from the earth and cooling results. Specifically, they determined when fire returns 20 years earlier than predicted, 0.5 watts per square meter of area burned are soaked up by the earth from greenhouse gases, but 0.9 watts per square meter will be sent back into space. The net effect is cooling. Watts are used to measure the rate at which energy is gained or lost from the earth.56.According to the new findings, taking steps to prevent northern forest fires may _______.A. result in a warming climateB. cause the forest fires to occur more frequentlyC. lead to a longer fire seasonD. protect the forests and the environment there57.Earlier studies about northern forest fires __________.A. analyze all aspects of how northern fires influence climateB. indicate that forest fires will pollute the atmosphereC. suggest that people should take measures to protect environmentD. suggest that the fires will speed up climate warming58.The underlined phrase “soak up” in the last paragraph most probably means _______.A. releasedB. absorbedC. createdD. disturbed59.From the passage we can conclude that forest fires in Alaska, Canada and Siberia may ______.A. warm the climate as the supposition goesB. allow more snow to reflect more sunlight into space and thus cool the climateC. destroy large areas of forests and pollute the far-off sea iceD. help to gain more energy rather than release more energy60.The underlined phrase “A Grant” in the first line most probably means ________.A. bank interestB. a credit cardC. an education feeD. financial aid61. A big bank offers a new student special services because ________.A. they need student accounts badlyB. they charge students extra interestC. they know he can get money regularlyD. they hope he’ll be a potential customer(C)Throughout the centuries, various writers have contributed greatly to the literary treasure trove of books lining the shelves of today’s libraries. In addition to writing interesting material, many famous writers, such as Edgar Allan Poe, were larger-than-life characters with personal histories that are as interesting to read as the stories they wrote. Poe’s rocky life included being driven off from the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1831 and an ongoing battle with alcohol. Yet, despite heavy gambling debts, poor health, and terrible unemployment, Poe managed to produce a body of popular works, including “The Raven” and “The Murders in the Rue Morgue.”Herman Melville, author of Moby Dick, once lived among the man-eaters in the Marquesas Islands and wrote unusual tales inspired by his years of service in the U.S. Navy. Dublin-born Oscar Wilde was noted for his charmatic personality, his outrageous lifestyle, and creating witty phrases such as, “Nothing succeeds like excess.” D.H. Lawrence wrote shameful novels that were often cut, and Anne Rice led a double life writing bestselling horrible novels under her real name and using “A.N. Roquelaure” for the lowbrow unhealthy novels she penned on the side.Nonconformist(不墨守成规的)author and naturalist Henry David Thoreau once fled to the woods and generated enough interesting material to fill his noted book Walden. Thoreau wrote on the issue of passiveresistance protest in his essay “Civil Disobedience” and served time in jail for refusing tax payments in protest of the United States government’s policy towards slavery. American short story writer O. Henry’s colorful life was ruined by tragic events, such as being accused and sentenced for stealing money from an Austin, Texas bank. Despite his success selling his short stories, O. Henry struggled financially and was nearly bankrupt when he died.As diverse as these famous authors’ backgrounds were, they all led unconventional lives while writing great literary works that will endure throughout the ages. The next time you read an interesting book, consider learning more about the author by reading his or her biography so you can learn about the unique life experiences that shaped his or her writing.63.Which of the following is NOT TRUE about Edgar Allan Poe?A. He defined it as “intentional action for the welfare of others that involves at least the possibility of either no benefit or a loss to the actor”. At that time, studies of animal behavior and phrenology (颅相学) led him to locate egotistical (自我本位的) instincts at the back of the brain, altruistic ones at the front. Today, we have a far more sophisticated knowledge of the neurological (神经学的) and biochemical factors that underpin kind behavior. And this science forms the bases of two books aimed at general readers—but also at those who, despite the research, still doubt the existence of altruism. However, the books may end up providing more information for the naysayers. Take The Altruistic Brain by neuroscientist Donald Pfaff. On solid scientific ground, he builds a five-step theory of how altruism occurs, which depends on an idea that is unconvincing and may achieve the opposite result. Pfaff argues that to act altruistically you should first visualize the receiver of your good will, then mentally transform their image into your own, “from angle to angle and curve to curve”. Does it really work? At the core of evolutionary biologist David Sloan Wilson’s Does Altruism Exist? is another contentious (有争议的) idea: altruism has evolved as the result of group selection. But Wilson argues his corner masterfully, providing a clever reply to the belief that natural selection occurs only at the level of the selfish gene: “Selfishness beats altruism within groups. Altruistic groups beat selfish groups,” he says. In other words, we cooperate when doing so gives our team the advantage. That doesn’t sound very selfless either. Wilson acknowledges this, but argues that thoughts and feelings are less important than actions. According to evolutionary theory, pure altruists do exist, but it doesn’t matter why people choose to help others—their reasons may be difficult even for themselves to understand. What matters is that humans can coordinate their activities in just the right way to achieve common goals. Other animals do this too, but we are masters. “Teamwork is the signature adaptation of our species,” he says. Pfaff goes further, insisting that our brain biology “urges us to be kind”. He believes this knowledge alone will inspire individuals to be more altruistic. His desire to create a better world is admirable and some of his ideas are interesting, but Wilson’s analysis is clearer. While it is in our nature to be altruistic, Wilson says, we also have a healthy regard for self-interest and a resistance to being pushed around. Which one comes to the fore depends on the environment in which we find ourselves. Ethics, he says, cannot be taught at individual level, but are “a property of the whole system”.67.Which of the following can be considered an altruistic behaviour according to Comte’s definition?A. A person offers to donate his liver to another who needs one.B. A clerk returns the umbrella to his colleague which he has kept for a long time.C. A student volunteers to work in the orphanage to collect data for his research.D. A police officer spots a car parking in the no-parking area, finding a child in the trunk.68.The word “naysayers” (in paragraph 4) most probably means ________.A. people who take a positive attitudeB. people who doubts somethingC. people who have no say in an areaD. people who are experts in an area69.What does Donald Pfaff think people should do in order to altruistically?A. Draw a picture of the person they are going to help.B. Transform the receiver into a kind person.C. Visualize what they are going to do in mind first.D. Imagine they themselves are to be helped.70.Which of the following statements is David Sloan most likely to agree with in his book?A. Being kind is not something people are born with.B. People in groups are less likely to be selfish.C. People may well act selflessly because of where they are.D. Most people know clearly why they are ready to help others.71.What can be concluded from the passage?A. Figuring out what makes us behave selflessly is a tricky business.B. Unlike Donald Pfaff’s book, David Sloan’s book aims at professional readers.C. Comte’s definition of altruism proves to be impractical in modern times.D. Figuring out what makes us behave selflessly is a tricky business.。

Yet, I was determined to go ahead.I remember back to my 7th year in school. In my first P.E. class, the teacher required us to run laps and then hit a softball. I didn’t do either well. He later informed me that I was "not athletic".The idea that I was "not athletic"stuck with me for years. When I started running in my 30s, I realized running was a battle against myself, not about competition or whether or not I was athletic. It was all about the battle against my own body and mind. A test of wills! The night before my marathon, I dreamt that I couldn’t even find the finish line. I woke up sweating and nervous, but ready to prove something to myself.Shortly after crossing the start line, my shoe laces(鞋带) became untied. So I stopped to readjust. Not the start I wanted! At mile 3, I passed a sign: "GO FOR IT, RUNNERS!"By mile 17, I became out of breath and the once injured ankle hurt badly. Despite the pain, I stayed the course walking a bit and then running again.By mile 21, I was starving! As I approached mile 23, I could see my wife waving a sign. She is my biggest fan. She never minded the alarm clock sounding at 4 a.m. or questioned my expenses on running.I was one of the final runners to finish. But I finished! And I got a medal. In fact, I got the same medal as the one that the guy who came in first place had.Determined to be myself, move forward, free of shame and worldly labels(世俗标签), I can now call myself a "marathon winner".24. A month before the marathon, the author ____________.A. made up his mind to runB. felt scaredC. was well trainedD. lost hope25. Why did the author mention the P.E. class in his 7th year?A. To acknowledge the support of his teacher.B. To amuse the readers with a funny story.C. To show he was not talented in sports.D. To share a precious memory.26. How was the author’s first marathon?A. A winner is one with a great effort of will.C. Failure is the mother of success.D. One is never too old to learn.CLast week the British university system offered a record number of places. That sounds like good news—but do we really need more people to go to university? For that matter, does the world need more universities? The answer feels like it should be yes.Education is good, is it not? But everything has a cost.Education takes time. We could insist that everyone study full-time until the age of 45 but that would surely be too much. And perhaps half the population studying until they’r e 21 is also too much. As for universities, they consume financial and intellectual resources—perhaps those resources might be better spent elsewhere. My own personal opinion is strongly in favor both of going to university, and of simply having universities around. The main skill I learnt at university was to write about economics, and I use that skill every day of my professional life, even an abstract education seems practical to me. And I now live in Oxford, one of the world’s most celebrated (著名的) university cities. Oxford’s experience certainly suggests that universities have much to offer. The city’s architecture and green spaces have been shaped—greatly for the better, on balance —by the 900-year-old institution at its heart. The beauty attracts tourists and locals too.But these are samples of one. Many people do not find themselves using the skills and knowledge they accumulated at university. And Oxford’s dreaming spires (尖顶) aren’t terribly representative of global universities as a whole.28. Which of the following is the most proper title?A. Does the world need more universities?B. Is education really necessary?C. Is British university system the best?D. Do you prefer universities abroad?29. Which of the following about the writer is TRUE?A. He is an economist now.B. He likes Oxford’s architecture and green spaces most.C. The skill he learnt at university is practical in his career.D. He holds the view that going to univeristy is a waste of resources.30. The writer develops the passage by ______.A. comparing his experience with others’B. persuading us with his own experience and opinionC. describing and sharing his own university experienceD. informing us of the advantages of universities31. In the following part, the writer is likely to ______.A. list more supporting details about his opinionB. show more disadvantages about going to universitiesC. present some opposite opinions about universitiesD. draw a conclusion about the topicDMore than 10 million Chinese cultural relics have been lost overseas, most of which were stolen and illegally shipped out of China during the times of war before 1949. About 1. 67 million pieces are housed in more than 200 museums in 47 countries, which accounts for 10 percent of all lost Chinese cultural relics, and the rest are in the hands of private collectors. Most of these treasures are owned by museums or private collectors in the United States, Europe, Japan and Southeast Asian countries. There are more than 23,000 pieces in the British Museum, most of which were stolen or bought for pennies more than 100 years ago.The major method to recover these national treasures was to buy them back. In some cases, private collectors donated the relics to the government. Also the government can turn to official channels(渠道) to demand the return of relics. In 2003, a priceless bronze pig's head dating from the Qing Dynasty was returned to its home in Beijing after it was removed by the Anglo-French Allied Army over 140 years ago. Macao entrepreneur(企业家) Stanley Ho donated 6 million yuan to buy it back from a US art collector and then donated it to the Poly Art Museum in Beijing.Although buying-back is the most feasible way to recover the lost treasures, limited funding is always a big headache. In recent years, the Chinese government has improved efforts to recover the precious cultural relics lost overseas. It has started a national project on the recovery of the treasures and has set up a database(数据库) collecting relevantinformation. It has signed several international agreements with many countries onthis matter, and is also looking for international cooperation to recover the relics by working closely with several international organizations.32. What is the passage mainly about?A. How to recover cultural relics.B. The efforts to recover Chinese cultural relics.C. Stanley Ho donated a bronze pig's head to Beijing.D. Chinese cultural relics were stolen by the Anglo-French Allied Army.33. Most of lost Chinese cultural relics .A. have been recovered by the Chinese governmentB. were bought for little money by foreignersC. are owned by private collectorsD. are housed in foreign museums34. Which of the following statements about the bronze pig's head is NOT true?A. It was made in the Qing Dynasty.B. It is now in the Poly Art Museum in Beijing.C. It was donated by the French government to China.D. It was removed by the Anglo-French Allied Army over 140 years ago.35. The underlined word "feasible" in Paragraph 5 can be replaced by " ".A. possibleB. difficultC. popularD. careful第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

About 70 people from around the country came to dance on Sunday.“It was excellent. Everyone there just had a great time,〞Pegnataro said.“Those that came guessed it might be their last one.〞Pegnataro said he was_on_cloud_nine to bring his wife of 53 years back to the party, and he introduced her to each of his classmates.“Everyone was very excited at the party.Though we had been separated for so many years, the war brought my class closer together,〞he said.“We missed out on t he party that we should have had. So before leaving for Nepal,we asked the people we know whether they would be interested in donating (捐赠) cash or goods to Nepal Orphans(孤儿) Home. One friend, whose family owns a chain called Drake Supermarket, told others about it. His effort paid off. We received donations that filled 29 boxes with sporting goods, toys, coloring books, pencils, children's books, and more. The boxes were later taken to Drake's warehouse where I prepared them for shipment. Drake agreed to ship them to Nepal for free. The boxes had arrived at the Volunteer House when we arrived there. The next day,Jason and I unpacked the boxes. The children from the orphanages lined up and were able to choose a gift. This process took about an hour, but the looks on their faces and the happiness that we saw in their eyes made it one of the best days of our life.We visited the orphanages there in the following days. Being with the children at the orphanages was both sad and wonderful. I'm sure that anyone who has volunteered will understand what I mean by that. You've made friends since childhood, but you still don't know who your true friends are. Here are some signs to tell you if your friend is a true friend.Always honestHonesty is important to keep a relationship alive. A true friend always tells you the truth. It may be hard sometimes but lying can destroy a friendship. It is important that your friend speaks honestly and never makes up stories.Always listeningThere are always periods in your life when you have problems or difficulties. A true friend will always have time to listen to your problems and give you advice. It may not be able to offer a solution to your problems but the fact that your friend makes time to listen is a sign he/she cares for you. Your friend is not a true friend if he/she can never make time for you when you are in trouble. You also need to be reasonable and accept that your friend also has other things to do so he/she can't always listen immediately to your problems.Always respectful(尊敬的)A true friend will always respect your opinion no matter whether he/she agrees or not. Your true friend may disagree but never insists that he/she is correct.Always understandingIt is possible that some problems will arise between you and your friend. A true friend will always be forgiving (体谅的)and understanding, even if it isn't his/her fault. We are all different people and we all make mistakes. A true friend is always forgiving and understanding because he/she doesn't want to take the risk of losing his/her best friend.9.What's the best title for the third paragraph?A.Always there for you.B.Keep your secrets.C.Always happy for you.D.Remember your important days.10.Which of the following is NOT mentioned in the passage?A.Never tell lies to friends.B.Making time for friends.C.Sharing fun with friends.D.Paying attention to a friend's opinion.11.What's the author's purpose of writing this passage?A.To teach us how to make true friends.B.To find out how long a friendship can last.C.To introduce his experience in making friends.D.To tell us how to find out if a friend is a true friend.DMany people turn to doctors or self-help books, but they ignore a powerful thing that could help them fight illnesses:their friends.Researchers are only now starting to pay attention to the importance of friendship in health. A 10-year Australian study found that older people with a large circle of friends were 22 percent less likely to die during the study period than those with fewer friends. A large 2007 study showed an increase of nearly 60 percent in the risk (危险) for obesity among people whose friends gained weight. And last year,Harvard researchers reported that strong social ties (关系) could improve brain health as we age.“In general, the role of friendship in our lives isn't well realized,〞 said Rebecca,a professor at the University of North Carolina.“Friendship has a bigger effect on our psychological (心理的) health than family relationships.〞While many friendship studies are about the close relationships of women, some research shows that it can do good to men, too. In a six-year study of 736 middle-aged men, having friendships reduces the risk of heart attack. Only smoking was as important a risk factor (因素) as having little social support. The exact reason why friendship has such a big effect isn't entirely clear. While friends can send a sick person to the hospital or pick up medicine, the advantages go well beyond physical help. Friendship clearly has a big psychological effect.“People with stronger friendships feel like there is someone they can turn to,〞 said Karen,a doctor.“The message of these studies is that friends make your life better.〞12.The three studies in Paragraph 2 show that ________.A.old people need friends the mostB.friends can help us lose weightC.social ties are connected to healthD.more friends make us healthier13.What do Rebecca's words in Paragraph 3 mean?A.Friendship is more important to women than to men.B.What people need most is a friend's care.C.Friendship is more important than family relationship.D.The value of friendship hasn't been fully understood.14.Which of the following can be used here to replace the underlined word “obesity〞?A.Fatness. That’s when we saw our first raccoon (浣熊). Quite at home in the big city, he paid us no attention, concentrating only on finding a 32 (taste) lunch. He sorted through a few options before coming out with a wrapped sandwich 33 (hold) between his paws.34 (surprise), rather than run away, he jumped down and walked casually to a spot on the path, not a metre from 35 we sat. The children were spellbound, the raccoon providing better 36 (entertain) than any museum. He glanced at us, perhaps checking to see 37 we were about to steal his lunch.38 delicate fingers, he peeled back the layers of plastic wrap until the half- eaten sandwich 39 (uncover). Then he surprised us all. Instead of starting his food, he turned to a nearby pool of water and 40 (dip) his paws in. With a casual air, he rubbed his paws together underwater for a moment, brushed his fur, then started gracefully picking at his meal.四、阅读理解I recently came in contact with celebrity magazines. My family isn’t one to give money for pictures of skinny, drunk celebrities with paragraphs about their relationships and shopping cart times. Thus, I was excited to finally get a chance to rea d about other people’s attractive yet troubled lives.Right away I noticed how each magazine seemed to be a copy of the other. They had headlines and pictures that were almost the same. Still, the pictures of perfectly constructed faces with cute designers outfits going on with their daily lives made me read on.Wait, celebrities taking their dogs for walk? Spending an afternoon at a park? All of these things seemed so ordinary — things my own family and I do together often. I suddenly realized how unextraordinary the people in these magazines were. They are simply normal people who happen to have a cool job and much money. For some reason, pictures of them doing things like buying milk at the store appeal to millions of readers. Then, when these regular people mess up, their mistakes is painted onto hundreds of newspapers and internet sites. What if every time we made a mistake, it was made public? Have you ever failed a test? Imagine seeing pictures of you on the front of a newspaper with headlines like, “Regular Schooling Isn’t Enough”. You’d be embarrassed.
