It is a very happy day for many boys and girls. Before the term ends in some schools, the children act a nativity or “birth” play, showing how Jesus was born in a stable. On the twenty-fourth of December, all children are very excited. Usually they are sent to bed early so that their parents can get the presents ready. The younger children think that Father Christmas will come down the chimney or fireplace, so they hang up a sock for him to put presents in. The greedy ones even hang up a pillow-case or a sack to try to get more presents. Later that night, father or mother will put presents in the sock, and leave others at the side of the bed. On Christmas morning, the children wake up very early. Some even turn on the light at two o'clock, and most of them are awake by six o'clock, and the young ones play while the dinner is prepared. At about one o'clock in the afternoon, the Christmas dinner is brought in. The turkey or chicken is quickly eaten. Children search in their Christmas pudding for new coins which are hidden in it. The rest of the day is full of games and eating until the happiest of all Christmas holidays comes to an end. It was Christmas Day yesterday. We had a Christmas party at school. Many friends of mine came to the party. After we saidMerry Christmas, we began to sing Christmas songs, such as Edelweiss, andso on. Then we told some Christmas stories, such as Christmas Father. Then I danced and laughted with my friends. We all had a good time. When the party came to the end,we said Happy New Year to each other. Christmas is a Christian holiday held on December 25 which celebrates the birth of Jesus Christ. Eastern Orthodox Churches, which use the Julian Calendar to determine feast days, celebrate on January 7 by the Gregorian Calendar. Both dates are merely traditional and neither is thought to be the actual birthdate of Jesus. Christ‘s birth, or nativity, is said to fulfill Old Testament prophecies concerning the coming of a messiah, or savior. The word Christmas is derived Middle English Christemasse and from Old English Cristes msse.It is a contraction meaning Christ‘s mass. The name of the holiday is often shortened to Xmas because Roman letter X resembles the Greek letter Χ (chi), an abbreviation for Christ . In Western countries, Christmas has become the most economically significant holiday of the year. The popularity of Christmas can be traced in part to its status as a winter festival. Many cultures have their most important holiday in winter because there is less agricultural work to do at this time. Examples of winter festivals that are believed by some to have influenced Christmas include the pre-Christian festivals of Yule and Saturnalia. In Western culture, the holiday is characterized by the exchange of gifts among friends and family members, some of the gifts being attributed to Santa Claus (also known as Father Christmas, Saint Nicholas, and Father Frost). However, various local and regional Christmas traditions are still practiced, despite the widespread influence of American, British and Australian Christmas motifs disseminated by film, popular literature, television, and other media.

1Christmas is the most important festival in the western world. It falls on December 25th. When my mother and I stayed in America, we were invited by one of my mothers friends to have Christmas with an American family. We bought some presents for our American friends on our way to their house. They had prepared different kinds of gifts for their family and guests when we got to their house, such as Christmas candles, cakes, cards, little toys, biscuits and so on. A Christmas tree was placed in the comer of the brilliant hall. How beautiful it was! We were impressed by these. We had a big meal. After dinner, they told us some interesting stories about Christmas. We learned that Christmas had something to do with God. We went to bed at midnight. Though we knew the Santa Claus was not true, we were still waiting for the Santa Claus with white beard to bring us presents. And we received many beautiful presents the next morning. This Christmas was really unforgettable. Not only did I have a good time, but also I knew something about foreign culture.
Introduction:Christmas is a significant holiday celebrated by millions of people around the world. It is a time of joy, love and giving. As a high school student, I eagerly anticipate the arrival of Christmas each year as it brings with it a sense of warmth and happiness. In this essay, I will share my experience of celebrating Christmas and the various traditions that make this holiday special.Paragraph 1: Preparing for ChristmasThe excitement of Christmas begins days before the 25th of December. The weeks leading up to Christmas are filled with anticipation and preparation. Families come together to decorate their homes, putting up Christmas lights, wreaths, and ornaments. The sound of Christmas carols fills the air as people spread holiday cheer. It is during this time that we also make a list of the gifts we want to receive and start to buy presents for our loved ones.Paragraph 2: Celebrating Christmas EveFor many, Christmas Eve is just as important as Christmas Day. On this night, families gather together for a festive dinner. The table is filled with traditional dishes such as roasted turkey, mashed potatoes, and cranberry sauce. After dinner, we exchange gifts and spend quality time with our loved ones. It is a time for reconnecting and strengthening our bonds with family and friends.Paragraph 3: Midnight MassOne of the most important traditions of Christmas Eve is attending Midnight Mass. Churches are beautifully decorated with candles and Christmas ornaments. The choir sings hymns of praise and everyone gathers to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ. It is a solemn and spiritual event that marks the true meaning of Christmas.Paragraph 4: Christmas DayWaking up on Christmas morning is a magical experience. Children rush to their stockings to see what Santa Claus has brought them. The joy and excitement on their faces are priceless. Families exchange gifts and spend the day together, enjoying each other's company. It is a time for laughter, fun, and bonding.Paragraph 5: Traditional Christmas FoodChristmas is also a time for indulging in delicious food. Different countries have their own unique culinary traditions for Christmas. In my family, we enjoy feasting on a variety of dishes, including ham, roast beef, and an assortment of desserts. Gingerbread cookies, fruitcake, and eggnog are some of the traditional treats that we savor during this festive season.Paragraph 6: Giving BackApart from receiving gifts, Christmas is also about giving back to those in need. Many people volunteer at soup kitchens, donate toys and clothes to orphanages, and organize charity drives to help the less fortunate. The spirit of giving is what truly makes Christmas special.Paragraph 7: The Magic of Christmas LightsOne of the highlights of Christmas is the dazzling display of lights. Streets, houses, and public places are transformed into a winter wonderland. The shimmering lights create a festive atmosphere and bring joy to people of all ages. It is the perfect backdrop for taking photos, making memories, and spreading holiday cheer.Paragraph 8: New Year's EveAs Christmas comes to an end, we gear up to welcome the New Year. New Year's Eve celebrations often involve fireworks, parties, and countdowns. It is a time to reflect on the past year and set goals for the upcoming one. Saying farewell to the old year and embracing the new one brings a sense of hope and excitement. Conclusion:Christmas is a time of joy, love, and giving. It is a holiday that unites people from different cultures and backgrounds. The traditions and festivities surrounding Christmas bring families and communities closer together. The joy and magic of Christmas will always hold a special place in my heart, and I look forward to celebrating it every year.。

1I like Christmas, it is just like our Spring Festival.Maybe the Spring Festival is much more important and interesting than Christmas, but I like Christmas Day better. Because we can spend time with our friends and classmates during Christmas. When it is snowy,Christmas becomes much more lovely, just like in fairytales. I can imagine I am in a fairytale, the girl who sold the matches is my friend, the ugly duck becoming more and more beautiful and so on. What a beautiful place! So we can also call Christmas “Snowy Lovely Day.”On Christmas Day, shops are red and green. There are so many Christmas cards, Christmas hats, Christmas dolls and many colourful things. So shops look very beautiful. We can give a card or a doll to our friends and say “Merry Christmas.” By the way, I think studying can also become much more interesting.Christmas is coming, it also means a new year will come. Let’s study harder to welcome the new year! 2The original Santa Claus, St. Nicholas, was born in the ancient southeastern Turkish town of Lycia early in the fourth century. His generosity was legend, and he was particularly fond of children. We know this primarily through Roman accounts of hispatronage of youth, which eventually led to his becoming the patron saint of children. Throughout the Middle Ages, and well beyond, he was referred to by many names none of them Santa Claus.Children today would not at all recognize the St. Nick who brought gifts to European children hundreds of years ago except perhaps for his cascading white beard. He made his rounds in full red-and-white bishops robes, complete with twin peaked miter and crooked crozier. He was pulled by no fleet footed reindeer, but coaxed in indolent donkey. And he arrived not late on Christmas Eve, but on his Christian feast day, December 6. The gifts he left beside the hearth were usually small: fruit, nuts, hard candies, wood and clay figurines.During the Protestant Reformation of the sixteenth century, St. Nicholas was banished from most European countries. Replacing him were more secular figures, who in general were not at center stage at that point in history..The Dutch kept the St. Nicholas tradition alive. As the "protector of sailors," St. Nicholas graced the prow of the first Dutch ship that arrived in America. And the first church built in New York City was named after him. The Dutch brought with them to the New World two Christmas items that were quickly Americanized. In sixteenth century Holland, children placed wooden shoes by the hearth the night of St. Nicholass arrival. The shoes were filled with straw, a meal for the saints gift laden donkey. In return, Nicholas would a small treat into each clog. In America, the shoe was replaced with the stocking, hung by the chimney. The Dutch spelled St. Nicholas "Saint Nikolass," which in the New World became "Sinterklass". later changed to "Santa Claus".Much of modern day Santa Claus lore, including the reindeerdrawn sleigh, originated in America. Dr. Clement Clarke Moore composed "The Night Before Christmas" in 1822, to read to his children on Christmas Eve. The poem might have remained privately in the Moore family if a friend had not mailed a copy of it (without authorial attribution) to a newspaper and became part of the Santa legend. It was in America that Santa put on weight. The rosy-cheeked, roly-poly Santa is credited to the influential nineteenth-century cartoonist Thomas Nast. From 1863 until 1886, Nast created a series of Christmas drawings for Harpers Weekly. These drawings, executed over twenty years, exhibit a gradual evolution in Santa from the pudgy, diminutive, elf-like creature of Dr. Moores immortal poem to the bearded, potbellied, life-size bell ringer familiar on street corners across America today. Nasts cartoons also showed the world how Santa spent his entire year constructing toys, checking on childrens behavior, reading their requests for special gifts. His images were incorporated into the Santa lore.Santa is known throughout the world in many different names, such as:Saint Nikolaas (Sinter Klaas), from the Dutch Father Christmas, from the English Kris Kringle, from the Germans Befana, from the Italians Bobouschka, from the Russians (a grand motherly figure instead of a male). 3It was one of the last days before Christmas, and the as sistants in the large store had their hands full serving eager Christmas shoppers. At one counter an old lady was choosing gloves red ones for her daugher in law, light blue ones for her niece, pink ones forher grand daughter, green ones for her sister and by the time she had found what she wanted, the counter was covered with pairs of all colors and sizes. When the salesgirl had finally written out the bill and was about to turn to the next customer with a tired voice. The origins of Christmas can be traced back to the birth of Jesus Christ in Bethlehem more than two thousand years ago. Christians believe that Jesus is the Son of God and Christmas is a time to celebrate his birth. The story is told in the Bible's New Testament, where Joseph and Mary made a journey to Bethlehem due to a government census. Unable to find lodging, they took shelter in a stable, where Mary gave birth to Jesus. Angels, shepherds, and wise men were said to have visited the baby Jesus, bringing gifts and spreading the message of peace and goodwill. The birth of Jesus signaled a significant event in history, and Christmas has been celebrated as a solemn religious holiday since ancient times. However, the way Christmas is celebrated has evolved over the years, incorporating various customs and traditions from different cultures and regions. Today, Christmas has become a universal holiday celebrated by people of different faiths and cultures, often with a mix of religious and secular traditions. One of the most common customs associated with Christmas is the decoration of Christmas trees. The Christmas tree is typically an evergreen conifer, symbolizing everlasting life. It is decorated with lights, ornaments, and a star or an angel on top, representing the star of Bethlehem or the angel that appeared to announce the birth of Jesus. The tradition of decorating Christmas trees originated in Germany in the 16th century and has since spread worldwide.Another popular tradition is the exchange of gifts. It is believed to have originated from the story of the three wise men who brought gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh to the baby Jesus. Nowadays, people exchange gifts to show love and appreciation for one another. The act of giving gifts also mirrors the notion of giving to those in need, as Jesus taught his followers to care for the less fortunate. Many communities engage in charitable activities during the holiday season, such as donating toys, clothes, and food to those in need. Christmas is a time for feasting and enjoying delicious food. Traditional Christmas dishes vary across different cultures. In some countries, a roast turkey or ham is the centerpiece of the Christmas dinner. In others, fish or vegetarian dishes are preferred. Fruits, nuts, and sweets are common treats during the holiday season, with gingerbread cookies, fruitcakes, and mince pies being popular choices. Families and friends gather around the table to share a meal and create lasting memories.Besides these customs, various other traditions make Christmas a special time of the year. Carol singing is one such tradition. People go from house to house, singing joyful hymns and spreading Christmas cheer. Many churches organize Christmas pageants, where biblical stories are reenacted through music and drama. Nativity scenes, depicting the birth of Jesus, can be seen in churches and homes, reminding people of the true meaning of Christmas. In recent years, the commercialization of Christmas has become more pronounced. The holiday season is marked by a flurry of shopping, with stores offering discounts andpromotions to attract customers. While the emphasis on shopping and material possessions may seem contrary to the true spirit of Christmas, it is important to remember that gift-giving and the exchange of goods are merely outward expressions of love and goodwill. The real essence of Christmas lies in the values it represents – love, kindness, and compassion towards one another.Christmas is a time for reflection and gratitude. It allows us to pause and appreciate the blessings in our lives, celebrate our achievements, and reflect on the challenges we have overcome. It is a time to forgive and reconcile, to mend broken relationships, and to extend a helping hand to those in need. While the holiday season can be joyful and exciting, it can also be a time of great sadness for those who have lost loved ones or are dealing with personal struggles. It is important to reach out to those who may be feeling lonely or isolated and show them love and support during this time.In conclusion, Christmas is a time for celebration, love, and togetherness. It is an occasion that brings families and communities together, transcending differences in religion, culture, and nationality. It is a time to reflect upon the teachings of Jesus Christ, to spread kindness and joy, and to express gratitude for the blessings in our lives. As we gather around the Christmas tree, exchange gifts, and share a meal, let us remember the true meaning of Christmas – a celebration of love, hope, and the birth of a child who brought peace to the world.。
