Each passage is followed by several questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. Choose the one that fits best according to the information given in the passage you have just read.(A)One hundred and thirteen million Americans have at least one bank-issued credit card. They give their owners automatic credit in stores, restaurants, and hotels, at home, across the country, and even abroad, and they make many banking services available as well. More and more of these credit cards can be read automatically, making it possible to withdraw or deposit money in scattered(分散的) locations, whether or not the local branch bank is open. For many of us, the "cashless society" is not on the horizon — it's already here. While computers offer these conveniences to consumers, they have many advantages for sellers too. Electronic cash registers(现金收入记录机) can do much more than simply ring up sales. They can keep a wide range of records, including who sold what, when, and to whom. This information allows businessmen to keep track of their list of goods by showing which items are being sold and how fast they are moving. Decisions to reorder or return goods to suppliers can then be made. At the same time these computers record which hours are busiest and which employees are the most efficient, allowing personnel(人员) and staffing assignments to be made accordingly(从而). And they also identify preferred customers for promotional campaigns. Computers are relied on by manufacturers for similar reasons. Computer-analyzed marketing reports can help to decide which products to emphasize now, which to develop for the future, and which to drop. Computers keep track of goods in stock, of raw materials on hand, and even of the production process itself.Numerous other commercial enterprises, from theaters to magazine publishers, from gas and electric utilities to milk processors(制造者), bring better and more efficient services to consumers through the use of computers.65. According to the passage, the credit card enables its owner to ________.A. withdraw as much money from the bank as he wishesB. obtain more convenient services than other people doC. enjoy greater trust from the storekeeperD. cash money wherever he wishes to66. The phrase "ring up sales" most probably means "________".A. make an order of goodsB. record sales on a cash registerC. call the sales managerD. keep track of the goods in stock67. What is this passage mainly about?A. Approaches to the commercial use of computers.B. Conveniences brought about by computers in business.C. Significance of automation in commercial enterprises.D. Advantages of credit cards in business.(B)The cohesiveness(内聚力)of a family seems to rely on members sharing certain routine practices and events. For a growing share of the American labor force, however, working shifts beyond the normal daylight hours--- what we here call “shiftwork” ----makes the lives of families difficult.Existing research shows that both male and female shiftworkers express high levels of stress and a sense of conflict between the demands of work and family life. But shiftwork couples still maintain a traditional attitude about the meaning of marriage and the individual roles of husband and wife. They expressed a willingness to do “whatever it takes” to approximate their view of a proper marriage, including sacrificing sleep and doing conventional things at unconventional hours. For the majority of couples interviewed-----even when wives worked outside their homes a proper marriage is characterized by a very clear division of roles: husbands are “providers” whose major responsibi lity is to support the family; wives are “homemakers” who clean, cook, and care for husbands and children. As couples encountered shiftwork schedules, however, initial expectations about what it would take to create a marriage and family were put to test. One woman expressed her dreams about what marriage was supposed to be: “It would make me feel like I had more of a home atmosphere, you know. That’s the way I always expected being married having the husband go off, come in the evenings and spend the rest of the evenings together, you knowthat’s the way we thought it would be. It doesn’t work out that way.”The women’s definitions of a “good husband” are typified by the following wife’s response:I expect him to be a good provider, and be there when I need him, loyal about the same things as he would expect out of me, expect that I expect him to dominate over me. But in a manner of speaking when it’s time to be a man, I expect him to stand up instead of sitting back expecting me to do everything. To husbands, a good wife was someone who was:Understanding of what I feel go through at work. I need that respect at work. I hope I get it at work. I want my wife to realize what I expect at work. I don’t want her to give me a lot shit when I co me home from work because----I don’t know if this makes much sense. These views seemed critical to maintain the families of the shiftworkers.68. Despite ______, shiftwork couples still hoped to maintain a stable life.A. traditional beliefs about marriageB. lack of control over timeC. a very clear division of rolesD. the demands of work69. From the selection, we can conclude that female shiftworkers were not satisfied with ______.A. their workB. their childrenC. their husband’s inability to protect the family and provide companionship.D. leisure activities70.What is implied by the author?A. Shiftwork had a direct effect on the attitudes and behavior of family members.B. Shiftworkers could live a normal life.C. Shiftwork couples had unconventional ideas about marriage.D. Female shiftworkers were satisfied with the time spent together with their families.71. In order to continue the marriage of the shiftworkers, ________.A. wives must learn to care for the children when their husbands are absentB. shiftwork couples must administer their time and activitiesC. wives mustn’t adapt their own feelings of boredom to their husbands’ workD. All of these(C)Ideas about polite behavior are different from one culture to another. Some societies, such as America andAustralia are mobile and very open, people here change jobs and move house quite often. As a result, they have a lot of relationships that often last only a sho rt time.So it’s normal to have friendly conversations with people that they have just met, and you can talk about things that other cultures would regard as personal. On the other hand there are more crowded and less mobile societies where long-term relationships are more important.A Malaysian or Mexican business person will want to get to know you very well before he or she feels happy to start business. But when you do get to know each other, the relationship becomes much deeper than it would in a mobile society. To Americans, both Europeans and Asians seem cool and formal at first. On the other hand, as a passenger from a less mobile society put it, it’s no fun spending several hours next to a stranger who wants to tell you all about his or her life and ask s you all sorts of questions that you don’t want to answer.Cross-cultural differences aren’t just a problem for travelers, but also for the flights that carry them. All flights want to provide the best service, but ideas about good service are different place to place. This can be seen most clearly in the way that problems are dealt with. Some societies have “universalist” cultures. These societies strongly respect rules, and they treat every person and situation in basically the same way.“Particularist” societies, on th e other hand, also have rules, but they are less important than the society’s unwritten ideas about what is right or wrong for a particular situation or a particular person. So the normal rules are changed to fit the needs of the situation or the importance of the person. This difference can cause problems.A traveler from a particularist society, India, is checking in for a flight in Germany, a country which has a universalist culture. The Indian traveler has too much luggage, but he explains that he has been away from home for a long time and the suitcases are full of presents for his family. He expects that the check-in official will understand his problem and will change the rules for him.The check-in official explains that if he was allowed to have too much luggage, it wouldn’t be fair to the other passengers. But the traveler thinks this is unfair, because the other passengers don’t have his problem.72.Often moving from one place to another makes people like Americans and Australians ____.A.like traveling betterB.easy to communicate withC.difficult to make real friendsD.have a long-term relationship with their neighbors73.A person from a less mobile society will feel it _____ when a stranger keeps talking to him or her, and asking him orher questions.A.boringB.friendlyC.normalD.rough74.In “particularist societies”, ______.A.they have no rules for people to obeyB.people obey the society’s rules completelyC.no one obeys the society’s rules though they haveD.the society’s rules can be changed with different persons or situations75.The writer of the passage thinks that the Indian and the German have different ideas about rules because of different______.A.interestsB.culturesC.habits and customsD.ways of life(D)The days of elderly women doing nothing but cooking huge meals on holidays are gone. Enter the Red Hat Society -a group holding the belief that old ladies should have fun.“My grandmothers didn’t do anything but keep house and serve everybody. They were programmed to do that,” said Emils Comette, head of a chapter of the 7-year-old Red Hat Society. While men have long spent their time fishing and playing golf, women have sometimes seemed to become unnoticed as they age. But the generation now turning 50 is the baby boomers(生育高峰期出生的人), and the same people who refused their parents’ way of being young are now trying a new way of growing old.If you take into consideration feminism(女权主义), a bit of spare money, and better health for most elderly, the Red Hat Society looks almost inevitable. In this society, women over 50 wear red hats and purple clothes, while the women under 50 wear pink hats and light purple clothing.“The organization took the idea from a poem by Jenny Joseph that begins: “When I am an old woman, I shall wear purple. With a red hat which doesn’t go,” said Ellen Cooper, who founded the Red Hat Society i n 1998. When the ladies started to wear the red hats, they attracted lots of attention.“The point of this is that we need a rest from always doing something for someone else,” Cooper said. “Women feel so ashamed and sorry when they do something for themse lves.” This is why chapters are discouraged from raising money or doing anything useful. “We’re a ladies’ play group. It couldn’t be more simple,” added Cooper’s assistant Joe Heywood.76.The underlined word “chapter” in paragraph 2 means __________.A.one branch of an organizationB.a written agreement of a clubC.one part of a collection of poemsD.a period in a society’s history77.From the text , we know that the “baby boomers” are a group of people who .A.have gradually become more noticeableB.are worried about getting old too quicklyC.are enjoying a good life with plenty of money to spendD.tried living a different life from their parents when they were young78.It could be inferred from the text that members of the Red Hat Society are .A.interested in raising money for social workB.programmers who can plan well for their futureC.believers in equality between men and womenD.good at cooking big meals and taking care of others79.Women join the Red Hat Society because .A.they want to stay youngB.they would like to appear more attractiveC.they would like to have fun and live for themselvesD.they want to be more like their parentsSection CDirections: Read the following text and choose the most suitable heading from A-F for each paragraph. Different sports require different training programs.B.A Chinese sprinter equaled the world rcorder.C.Athletes are still breaking records.D.Sport science helps improve athletes' performances.E.Mental training is as important as physical training.F. Science may be too important today.80.____At the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, the Chinese athlete Liu Xiang equaled the world record for the 110 metres hurdles (跨栏) when he ran the race in 12.91 seconds. This record time had been set in 1993 by British sprinter (短跑运动员) Colin Jackson and 9 years went by before another athlete was able to run as fast.81.___Record-breaking in all track events is slowing down and we appear to be moving much closer to the limits of human performance. Nevertheless, every four years, records which were previously thought to be unbeatable are broken. So what's behind this never-ending improvement in performance? And how long can we keep breaking records? Is there a limit to human performance or will athletes continue to gain seconds?82.____Most experts agree that it isn't the athletes' bodies which have changed but the huge advances in sport science which have enabled them to improve their performances. The individual athlete obviously has to have the necessary skill and determination to succeed, but the help of science and technology can be significant. Research has brought a better understanding of the athlete's body and mind but the advances in sports equipment technology have also had an important impact on human performance.83._____Scientists have shown that an athlete's body's needs vary according to the type of sport. This research has helped top sports people to adapt their training programme and diet better to their particular needs. Running the marathon and cycling, for example, are endurance (耐力) sports and require a different parathion (硝苯硫磷脂) to that of a 100-metre sprinter. In some sports, changes in techniques have significantly improved performance.84._____But in any sport, a player's success or failure results from a combination of both physical and mental abilities. Most coaches use psychological techniques to help their athletes cope with stress and concentrate on their performance. For example, the English football team listens to music in the changing rooms before a game to help the players relax and not feel so nervous. Before a difficult match, tennis players are encouraged to use visualization (相象) techniques to build confidence and this is almost as good as practice. An orphan,Tom Sawyer lived with his Aunt Polly and half brother,Sid,in St.Petersburg, Missouri;the fictional town was based on Hannibal,Missouri. The first few chapters highlighted Tom's troubled tendencies. He angered his aunt by eating jam,and then he got in a fight with another boy.As punishment for his various misdeeds,Aunt Polly ordered him to whitewash the fence. However,Tom managed to convince other children that whitewashing was fun,and they ended up giving him various items for a turn at the ter in the book Tom went to the cemetery with Huckleberry Finn,a wanderer engineering at the University of Colorado Boulder, who studies risk assessment and human spaceflight. They are,he explains,"What do we want to do? What does it take to do it?What can go wrong? And what can we do to reduce the chance of the bad things going wrong?"These questions seem simple enough, but the answers are essential When NASA,SpaceX,Blue Origin or anyone else considers sending humans into space, the vehicle they build must do three things.First,it has to accommodate the crew members by meeting their basic needs such as oxygen, food and water.Second,it should allow them to accomplish mission stly,it must protect the people onboard and on the ground from the risks of spaceflight and reentry.Sometimes meeting one need introduces new risks. The crew needs to breathe,of course, but it was high-pressure tanks of liquid oxygen that caused an explosion on Apollo13,and it was the fuel powering an oxygen generator that sparked a fire onboard the Mir space station in1997.Not only do astronauts float through a near vacuum(真空)filled with radiation, but in low-Earth orbit, where the International Space Station(ISS)operates, crews have to deal with a growing cloud of debris(碎片)circling Earth, which are usually from old satellites. The ISS's debris protective covering can absorb impacts from particles smaller than half an inch, but between1999 and2022,the station had to fire pushers32times to avoid contact with larger objects.A single hit would be dangerous;at speeds of17,500miles per hour, even something the size of a softball can cause severe damage. What is the point of looking decades into space and struggling to explore the vastness of the universe? The development of the space industry has brought humans many benefits, the most important of which is the spread of information. The cell phone signal and TV signal people use now are all benefiting from the development of the space industry. The ultimate goal of mankind is to go deeper into space, and to explore more unknown worlds, that is,the Moon,Mars and beyond, and what humanity is eager to achieve is a common home of freedom and equality.63.Why did the writer mention the explosion on Apollo13in Paragraph3and the fire onboard theMir space station?A.To explain the high risks of the space industry.B.To show the disadvantages of the space travel.C.To prove the unexpected risks of the spaceflight process.D.To describe the new risks involved in meeting the requirements.64.What is the main idea of the fourth paragraph?A.The space environment itself piles on danger.B.Any misstep on a space mission is fatal.C.It is very difficult to complete the space mission.D.Space engineers work hard to clean up space debris.65.What is the ultimate goal of human exploration of space?A.More unknown planets and stars.B.Freedom and equality of human beings.C.More protection against human diseases.D.Space secrets and endless resources.66.What does the underlined phrase in the last paragraph mean?A.Studying space for countless years.B.Living in space for many years.C.Exploring space for some ten years.D.Observing space for several ten years. Section CA.While it may sound like an advantage to many, people with this rare condition often find their unusual abilitystressful.B.But in a new study researchers demonstrated for the first time how this effect occurs in the brain.C.In the future, with the deepening of brain science research, human beings will eventuallyunlock the secrets of the brain.D.This process improves access to relevant information, without old memories interfering.E.When we obtain new information, the brain automatically attempts to make it into existinginformation by forming associations.F.The outside world is a judgment of the brain, but humans just don't realize it.Is Human Brain Too Full? The brain is a seemingly endless library, whose shelves house our most precious memories as well as our lifetime's knowledge. But is there a point where it reaches capacity? The answer is no, because brains are more complicated than that.Instead of just crowding in,old information is sometimes pushed out of the brain for new memories to form.Previous behavioral studies have shown that learning new information can lead to forgetting.(67)__________.In daily life, forgetting actually has clear advantages.Imagine, for instance, that you lost your bank card. The new card you receive will come with a new personal identification number(PIN). Each time you remember the new PIN,you gradually forget the old one.(68)__________And most of us may sometimes feel the frustration of having old memories interfere with new, relevant memories.Consider trying to remember where you parked your car in the same car park you were at a week earlier. This type of memory(where you are trying to remember new,but similar information) is particularly vulnerable to interference.(69)__________When we search information, both relevant and irrelevant information will appear. The majority of previous research has focused on how we learn and remember new information. But current studies are beginning to place greater emphasis on the conditions under which we forget,as its importance begins to be more appreciated.A very small number of people arc able to remember almost every detail of their life.(70) __________In a sense, forgetting is how our brains categorize memories,so the most relevant memories are ready to be taken out.Normal forgetting may even be a safety mechanism to ensure our brain doesn't become too full.IV.Summary WritingDirections:Read the following passage.Summarize the main idea and the main point(s)of the passage in no moree your own words as far as possible.71.ChatGPT Helps People a LotIn real life, robot customer service in various applications arc broadly similar to ChatGPT's Al products. It isChatGPT's ability to learn the most with the highest level of intelligence that has made it a global hit.
