Part One. Reading and Hands-on cooperation

1. Read the following text and get useful facts about Canada and its geography.

Canada is a country consisting of ten

provinces and three territories. Located in the

northern part of North America, it extends(延伸)

from the Atlantic to the Pacific and northward

into the Arctic Ocean. Covering 9.98 million square kilometres in total, Canada is the world's

second-largest country by total area and the fourth-largest country by land area. Its common

border with the United States forms the world's longest land border.

In the south, from

west

to

east

the ten

provinces

are

British Columbia(Capital: Victoria),

Alberta(Edmonton), Saskatchewan(Regina), Manitoba(Winnipeg), Ontario(Toronto),

Quebec(Quebec City), and Newfoundland and Labrador(St. John's). New Brunswick(Fredericton),

Prince Edward Island(Charlottetown) and Nova Scotia(Halifax) lie closely on the

southeast

corner. In the northern part are the three vast territories:

Yukon(Whitehorse),

Northwest(Yellowknife)

and Nunavut(Iqaluit). The largest

part by land area is the territory of

Nunavut. The largest part by water area is the province of Quebec. The smallest part of both land

and water area is the province of Prince Edward Island. 2 Canada has an endless variety of landscapes. Sky-high mountains, glinting glaciers(耀眼的冰川), deep rain forests and far away beaches are all here, spreading across six times zones. Its

polar bears, grizzly bears, whales and, everyone's favorite, moose(麋,驼鹿) also makes for a

fantastic playground.

Alberta is a western province of Canada. It is bordered by the provinces of British Columbia

to the west and Saskatchewan to the east, the Northwest to the north, and the U.S. state of

Montana to the south. Alberta and its neighbour, Saskatchewan, were established as provinces on

September 1, 1905. Edmonton, the capital city of Alberta, is located near the geographic centre of

the province and is the major supply and service center for Canada's crude oil(原油), oil sands

and other northern resource industries. Approximately 290 km (180 mi) south of the capital is

Calgary, Alberta's largest city.

Ontario is located in east-central Canada, and is Canada's most populous province,

accounting for nearly 40 percent of all Canadians, and is the second largest province in total area.

It is home to the nation's capital city, Ottawa, and the nation's most populous city, Toronto.

Ontario is bordered by the province of Manitoba to the west, Hudson Bay and to the north,

and Quebec to the east. Ontario is sometimes divided into two parts, Northern Ontario and

Southern Ontario. The great majority of Ontario's population and its farm land is located in the

south.

Yukon is the westernmost and smallest of Canada's three federal territories. Whitehorse is

the territorial capital and Yukon's only city. Native people, having lived for thousands of years,

hunt and trap as they always have.

The City of Vancouver, is a coastal seaport city on the mainland of British Columbia along

its south-easterly coast line. It is the third most populous city area in the country and the most

populous in Western Canada. Vancouver is one of the most diverse cities in Canada; 52% of its

people have a first language other than English.

Montreal is the largest city in the Canadian province of Quebec, and it is named after Mount

Royal, the hill in the heart of the city. French is the city's official language and is the language

spoken at home by 56.9% of the population of the city, followed by English at 18.6% and 19.8%

other languages ( 2006).

2. Work together and find out which provinces, territories and major cities are missing on your
