Censorship is becoming more and more of a dirty word. So persuasive have been the arguments against it, put forward by intelligent, well-meaning and above all articulate (雄辩的) campaigners, that nowadays censorship is hardly found in any state of the US. These people argued that the censorship which had prevailed throughout most of history had resulted in needless interference with, and frustration of, the creative talent of artists and writers. So now we have the opposite situation. But are the effects of this change as beneficial as expected? To put it bluntly, has the literary market been flooded with hitherto (到目前为止)suppressed masterpieces since censorship was eased? Oddly enough, rather the opposite is the case, and moreover we now have a situation in which fornication (通奸) and homosexual rape can be displayed on stage in the name of entertainment. The nook and magazine market is awash(覆盖,淹没)with printed filth and the public flocks to buy it.But perhaps I am wrong to be worried by this – maybe my disquiet, and that of others like me, is just a hangover from the former more restrictive situation. Many people would argue against us that books, plays and films do not have the power to corrupt.Yet it’s clear that society does have some conscience about what its members do in the name of entertainment. We would not, for example, allow someone to take his own life as part of a television show (although a recent Hollywood movie was frighteningly realistic in its depiction of TV producers promoting just this event to enhance their audience ratings ). We have made such entertainment as bear-baiting, and cockfighting, criminal offenses, because we believe that watching such things tends to deprave (使堕落) and corrupt spectators. The type of censorship we need is, in my view, similar to the laws we have governing the use of alcohol and tobacco.Although we can trace the bad effects of smoking and drinking, we have not prohibited them, but introduced laws which regulate their use, rather thanrepressing it altogether. In the case of pornography (色情文学) , such registration would not run contrary to liberal principles and should therefore be acceptable to even the most ardent civil libertarians. The rising tide of pornography must be curbed, before it does irreparable damage to the quality of life in our country.46. The people who oppose censorship assume that __________?A. censorship is turning into a filthy wordB. censorship is rarely found in the U.S.C. censorship prevents the original gift of artists and writersD. censorship is put forward by intelligent campaigners47. Censorship should become according to the author __________.A. something like laws to regulate the pornography in the book and magazine marketB. more flexible as to tracing the bad effects of pornographyC. a relatively new method to control the corruption of plays and filmsD. more effective to allow the publishing of books and magazines48. Since censorship was eased, __________.A. many literary masterpieces have paperedB. the amount of pornographic material has increasedC. more entertainment plays and television shows are producedD. sale of pornographic material has come down49. Which of the following statements is true?A. The author believes pornography should be completely suppressed.B. The society cares nothing about what its members do in the name of amusement.C. There are legal precedents for the regulation of pornography.D. The censorship has run throughout the whole history.50. What’s the author’s attitude towards censorship?A. oppositionB. objectivityC. indifferenceD. approval。
咱们首先看第一部分Dialogue Communication,对话交流部分,首先sectionA,咱们看这个对话,由于我们做旳很仓促,咱们大家一起回忆一下,第一道题,这道题,大家都是A和C之间选择,A是Are you sure?C是Do you think so?选项A和C之间旳区别,重要是在于选项A是指一种事实,是对事实确实定,它指旳是一种fact,我这样来写,这个对应旳是fact,我这样来写,大家也许能认同,这个对应是事实,选项C,Do you think so?
C,you might as well看到了吧,我们要注意表达提议旳句子两个均有,A和C,B旳选项应当是A和C,这个和原则化试题,我们之前旳预测应当是差不多旳,我之前在习题课上都讲过,就是对立选项中,相隔旳A和C旳选项中来求解,我们要选择一种积极性旳提议,A和C是哪个积极旳?是A还是C?是C吧,因此第三题答案是C。
第四题,仍然是对一种人旳见解,刊登个人旳意见,答案是B,I'm with you there,表达我同意。
同等学力考试《英语》试题及答案一、阅读理解(一)In most plants, the water is taken in by the roots and then carried through the plant by small tubes. Some of this water is used by the plant, but a large amount is given off as water vapor. In cooler parts of the earth, this vapor forms tiny drops of water in the air. These drops meet each other, become larger and finally fall as rain. In hotter regions, however, the water often rises very high into the air without forming drops. When this very wet air meets cooler air, tiny drops of water form in a kind of cloud called fog, or mist if it is near the ground. In some deserts, the earth is usually very dry and there is not enough water for the plants. At night, however, when the temperature falls, dew(露水)often forms; and sometimes it is followed by a fog, forming so heavily that the ground may be wet in the morning as if it had rained during the night. Why does the moisture(湿气)in the air form drops? If we cool a glass filled with a so-called invisible gas used to make the air we breathe, we shall find that the gas suddenly turns into a liquid. The moisture in the air forms drops for the same reason. The air is warmed by the central heating of houses, factories, offices and cars and by burning fuel for cooking and heating. So it contains a great deal of moisture. But when the warm air meets cooler air, some of its moisture forms drops, which we see as fog or mist close to the ground, or as rain falling from clouds.1. Water vapor forms tiny drops of water when _____.A. water is given off as water vaporB. it gets too hotC. the air becomes coolerD. it rises very high into the air2. The water in the air forms drops of water in _____.A. rainB. fogC. mistD. dew3. The ground in some parts of the desert is wet in the morning because _______.A. it has rained during the nightB. dew has fallen the previous nightC. a fog forms during the nightD. tiny drops have fallen from the rain cloud4. The moisture in the air forms drops because of _____.A. the warming of the airB. the moistening of the airC. the cooling of the airD. the wetting of the air(二)Many people around the world are choosing to work from home. For example, about a fifth of American workers say they work from home at least once a week. A report in August in The Manchester Guardian says that in July 43% of British workers said they worked from home for at least some of their work time. Explanations for this trend range from inventions like the Internet to the rising costs of commuting(通勤).A recent study by William Dilger at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana, studied the work habits of Americans between 2000 and 2008. He found that "telecommuting," or working from home, increases the amount of time people actually work. In his study, people who worked from home had lower salaries. However, they also worked six more minutes per day than those who commuted to the workplace. But is working at home always a good idea? A study in Sweden led by Petra Nilsson of Linköping University, found that people who worked at home often had a difficult time separating work from leisure. As one person said, "It is like a rubber band—sometimes it stretches too far and breaks." Another problem was that it was easy to work too long if there was no one to say, "It’s quitting time." The Swedish researchers found that people who work at home are not necessarily less stressed than those who go to the office.5. A fifth of American workers work from home at least _____.A. once a weekB. twice a weekC. three times a weekD. four times a week6. About ____% of British workers worked from home in July.A. 43B. 57C. 35D. 207. The walls of these sacs are covered with very tiny blood vessels. When you breathe in, air fills the air sacs. The oxygen in the air moves across the sac walls into the blood vessels. At the same time, carbon dioxide, a waste gas, passes from the blood vessels into the sacs. When you breathe out, the waste carbon dioxide leaves your body. The oxygen--the gas you need to live—stays in your blood. We take about 25,000 breaths a day. Every time you breathe in, you breathe in between 3 cups and 1/2 gallon (1 and 2 liters) of air.______9______ In one day, you breathe in 8 to 12 bathtubs full! When you exhale (呼出), you get rid of carbon dioxide, which is a waste gas.______10______So why does carbon dioxide make you want to breathe? Inhaling (吸气) oxygen from the air and exhaling waste carbon dioxide right out of your body!A. It combines with something dangerous.B. You couldn't stay alive without your heart's job.C. Your body can't use this air, so you breathe it out again.D. Carbon dioxide in your blood does something special, too.E. But your body still needs to get rid of waste gases.F. It also helps form the liquid part of your blood.G. In the process, it also helps get rid of waste gases.答案:9. C 10. G 11. F三、完形填空Temples (寺庙) are special buildings in many parts of the world. 同等学力英语阅读理解练习及解析(二)-学苑教育Millions of Americans lie awake at night counting sheep - or have a stiff drin kor pop an allergy pill, hoping it will make them drowsy. But experts agree all that self-medicating is a bad idea, and the causes of chronic insomnia remain mysterious.Almost a third of adults have trouble sleeping, and about 10 percenthave symptoms of daytime impairment that signal true insomnia. Sufferers readi lycite the resulting problems: walking around in a fog, as memory and other cognitive functions slow. Dozingoff at the wheel or at work. Depression. Lack o fenergy. But for all the complaints, scientists know surprisingly little about what causes chronic insomnia, its health consequences and how best to treat it,a panel of specialists brought together by the National Institutes of Health concluded Wednesday. Two things are clear, the panel found: Chronic insomnia is a major publichealth problem. And too many people are using unproven therapies, even while there are a few treatments that do work. The hope is that the report will dispel some of what panelist Dr. Sean Caples of the Mayo Clinic decried as "misinformation and myths."Among the panel's findings:_Cognitive/behavioral therapy - a psychology-based treatment that trains p eople to reduce anxiety and take other sleep-promoting steps - is very effectiv e, and doesn't cause side effects. But it can be hard to findhealth providers trained in the techniques. Insomniacs should check with board-certified sleep specialists and psychologists._Newer prescription sleep pills called Sonata, Ambien and Lunesta work without many of the side-effect concerns of older agents known as benzodiazepin es.One study of Lunesta showed effectiveness with six months of use, but moreresearch on long-term use of all three is needed, as chronic insomnia canlinger for years._The most commonly used treatments are alcohol and over-the-counter sedatin gantihistamines like Benadryl. Alcohol use actually disrupts quality sleep, andantihistamines can cause lingering daytime sedation and other cognitive problem s._The most common prescription insomnia medicine is an older, sedating antidepressant called trazodone, even though there's no good evidence that it offers more than a two-week benefit, and it comes with side effects._There is no evidence backing the effectiveness of the popular dietary supplements melatonin and valerian to fight insomnia.1.One of most effective ways to deal with choric insomnia is_______.A. to have a stiff drinkB. to pop an allegry pillC. to sleep and get up earlyD. Cognitive/behavioral therapy2. Which of the following symptoms does NOT belong to insomnia?A. Walking around in a fogB. Lack of energyC. nap at noonD. cognitive functions loss3. Passage 1Proper arrangement of classroom space is important to encouraging interaction. Most of us have noticed how important physical setting is to efficiency and comfort in our work.Today's corporation hire human engineering specialists and spend a considerable amount of time and money to make sure that the physical environments of buildings are fit to the activities of their inhabitants.Similarly, college classroom space should be designed to encourage the activity of critical thinking. We are already in the twenty-first century, but step into almost any college classroom and you step back in time at least a hundred years.Desks are normally in straight rows, so students can clearly see the teacher but not all their classmates. This assumption behind such an arrangement is obvious:Everything of importance comes from the teacher. With a little imagination and effort, unless desks are fixed to the floor, the teacher can correct this situation and create space that encourages interchange among students. In small or standardized classes, chairs, desks, and tables can be arranged in a variety of ways:circles,U-shapes,or semicircles. The primary goal should be for everyone to be able to see everyone rger classes, particular those held in lecture halls, unfortunately, allow much less flexibility.Arrangement of the classroom should also make it easy to divide students into small groups for discussion or problem-solving exercises.Small classes with movable desks and tables present no problem.Even in large lecture halls,it is possible for students to turn around and form group of four to six.Breaking a class into small groups provides more opportunities for students to interact with each other, think out loud, and see how other students’ thinking processes operate--all essential elements in developing new modes of critical thinking. In courses that regularly use a small group format, students might be asked to stay in the same small groups throughout the course.A colleague of mine allows students to move around during the first two weeks, until they find a group they are comfortable with.He then asks them to stay in the same seat, with the same group, from that time on.This not only creates acomfortable setting for interaction but helps him learn students’ names and faces.1. According to the passage, proper arrangement of physical environment in a company _______.A. can improve working conditionsB. leads to an friendly atmosphereC. can promote working efficiencyD. produce an energetic team leader2. Desks in straight rows in a traditional classroom imply _______.A. the importance of facial expressionsB. group work is not welcome in classC. strict rules that must be abided byD. the absolute authority of teachers3. The most important goal of classroom arrangement is to _______.A. create more chances of interaction among studentsB. increase more speaking practices among studentsC. make it possible for teachers to judge how well students have learnedD. improve the relationship between students and teachers4. By dividing students into small groups, teachers _______.A. find it easier to handle the in-class teachingB. can participate in group work convenientlyC. help develop students’ abilities in critical thinkingD. reinfo rce students’ ability in cooperation and communication5. It can be inferred that the author _______.A. criticizes the importance of teachers in classB. stresses the importance of interaction among studentsC. is reluctant to teach in a classroom in the 21st centuryD. is eager to reform the desk arrangements in his collegePassage 4Material culture refers to what can be seen, held, felt, used--what a culture produces. Examining a culture’s tools and technology can tell us about the group’s history and way of life. Similarly, research into the material culture of music can help us to understand the music culture. The most vivid body of material culture in it, of course, is musical instruments. We cannot hear for ourselves the actual sound of any musical performance before the 1870s when the phonograph was invented, so we rely on instruments for important information about music cultures in the remote past and their development. Here we have two kinds of evidence: instruments well preserved and instruments pictured in art. Through the study of instruments, as well as paintings, written documents, and so on, we can explore the movement of music from the Near East to China over a thousand years ago, or we can outline the spread of Near Eastern influence to Europe that resulted in the development of most of the instruments in the symphony orchestra.Sheet music or printed music, too, is material culture. Scholars once defined folk music cultures as those in which people learn and sing music by ear rather than from print, but research shows mutual influence among oral and written sources during the past few centuries in Europe, Britain, and America. Printed versions limit variety because they tend to standardize any song, yet they stimulate people to create new and different songs. Besides, the ability to read music notation has a far-reaching effect on music and, when it becomes widespread, on the music culture as a whole. One more important part of music’s material culture should be singled out: the influence of the electronic media--radio, record player, tape recorder, television, and videocassette, with the future promising talking and singing computers and other developments. This is all part of the "information revolution", a twentieth-century phenomenon as important as the industrial revolution was in the nineteenth. These electronic media are not just limited to modem nations; they have affected music cultures all over the globe.6. Research into the material culture of a nation is of great importance because __A. it helps produce new cultural tools and technologyB. it can reflect the development of the nationC. it helps understand the nation’s past and presentD. it can demonstrate the nation’s civilization7. It can be learned from this passage that _____A. the existence of the symphony was attributed to the spread of Near Eastern and Chinese musicB. Near Eastern music had an influence on the development of the instruments in the symphony OrchestraC. the development of the symphony shows the mutual influence of Eastern and Western musicD. the musical instruments in the symphony orchestra were developed on the basis of Near Eastern music8. According to the author, music notation is important because ___A. it has a great effect on the music culture as more and more people are able to read itB. it tends to standardize folk songs when it is used by folk musiciansC. it is the printed version of standardized folk musicD. it encourages people to popularize printed versions of songs9. It can be concluded from the passage that the introduction of electronic media into the world of music __A. has brought about an information revolutionB. has speeded up the appearance of a new generation of computersC. has given rise to new forms of music cultureD. has led to the transformation of traditional musical instruments10. Which of the following best summarizes the main idea of the passage?A. Musical instruments developed through the years will sooner or later be replaced by computers.B. Music cannot be passed on to future generations unless it is recorded.C. Folk songs cannot be spread far unless they are printed on music sheets.D. The development of music culture is highly dependent on its material aspect.Passage 5You’re busy filling out the application form for a position you really need. Let’s assume you once actually completed a couple of years of college work or even that you completed your degree. Isn’t it tempting to lie just a little, to claim on the form that your diploma represents a Harvard degree? Or that you finished an extra couple of years back at State University? More and more people are turning to utter deception like this to land their job or to move ahead in their careers, for personnel officers, like most Americans, value degrees from famous schools. A job applicant may have a good education anyway, but he or she assumes that chances of being hired are better with a diploma from a well-known university.Registrars at most well-known colleges say they deal with deceitful claims like these at the rate of about one per week. Personnel officers do check up on degrees listed on application forms, then. If it turns out that an applicant is lying, most colleges are reluctant to accuse the applicant directly. One Ivy League school calls them "impostors (骗子)"; another refers to them as "special cases". One well-known West Coast school, in perhaps the most delicate phrase of all, says that these claims are made by "no such people". To avoid outright (彻底的) lies, some job-seekers claim that they "attended" or "were associated with" a college or university. After carefully checking, a personnel officer may discover that "attending" means being dismissed after one semester. It may be that "being associated with" a college means that the job-seeker visited his younger brother for a football weekend. One school that keeps records of false claims says that the practice dates back at least to the turn of the century---that’s when they b egan keeping records, anyhow. If you don’t want to lie or even stretch the truth, there are companies that will sell you a phony diploma. One company, with offices in New York and on the West Coast, will put your name on a diploma from any number of nonexistent colleges. The price begins at around twenty dollars for a diploma from "Smoot State University". The prices increase rapidly for a degree from the "University of Purdue". As there is no Smoot State and the real school in Indiana is properly called Purdue University, the prices seem rather high for one sheet of paper.11. The main idea of this passage is that _____A. employers are checking more closely on applicants nowB. lying about college degrees has become a widespread problemC. college degrees can now be purchased easilyD. employers are no longer interested in college degrees12. According to the passage, "special eases" refers to cases that __A. students attend a school only part-timeB. students never attended a school they listed on their applicationC. students purchase false degrees from commercial firmsD. students attended a famous school13. We can infer from the passage that __A. performance is a better judge of ability than a college degreeB. experience is the best teacherC. past work histories influence personnel officers more than degrees doD. a degree from a famous school enables an applicant to gain advantage over others in job competition14. This passage implies that __A. buying a false degree is not moralB. personnel officers only consider applicants from famous schoolsC. most people lie on applications because they were dismissed from schoolD. society should be greatly responsible for lying on applications15. The word "phony" (Line 13, Para. 2) means __A. thorough C. falseB. ultimate D. decisivePassage 6Nobody actually wants to cause offence but,as business becomes ever more international,it is increasingly easy to get it wrong. There may be a single European market but it does not mean that managers behave the same in Greece as they do in Denmark. In many European countries handshaking is an automatic gesture. In France good manners require that on arriving at a business meeting a man should shake hands with everyone present. This can be a demanding task and,in a crowded room, may require gymnastic(体育的)ability if the farthest hand is to be reached. Handshaking is almost as popular in some other countries, but Northern Europeans, such as the British and Scandinavians, are not quite so fond of physical demonstrations of friendliness. In Europe the most common challenge is not the content of the food, but the way you behave as you eat. Some things are just not done.In France it is not good manners to raise tricky questions of business over the main course.Business has its place:after the cheese course. Unless you are prepared to eat in silence you have to talk about something-something,that is,other than the business deal which you are continually chewing over in your head.In Germany,as you walk sadly back to your hotel room, you may wonder why your apparently friendly hosts have not invited you out for the evening. Don't worry,it is probably nothing personal. Germans do not entertain business people with quite the same enthusiasm as some of their European counterparts. The Germans are also notable for the amount of formality they bring to business. As an outsider,it is often difficult to know whether colleagues have been working together for 30 years or have just met in the lift. If you are used to calling people by their first names this can be a little strange. To the Germans, titles are important. Forgetting that someone should be called Herr Doktor or Frau Direktorin might cause serious offence. It is equally offensive to call them by a title they do not possess. In Italy the question of title is further confused by the fact that everyone with a university degree can be called Doctor-and engineers, lawyers and architects may also expect to be called by their professional titles. These cultural challenges exist side by side with the problems of doing business in a foreign language. Language,of course,is full of difficulties-disaster’may be only a syllable away. But the more you know of the culture of the country you are dealing with, the less likely you are to get into difficulties. It is worth the effort. It might be rather hard to explain that the reason you lost the contract was not the product or the price, but the fact that you offended your hosts in a light-hearted comment overan aperitif(开胃酒).Good manners are admired: they can also make or break the deal.16. This passage suggests us toA. behave the same in the single European marketB. make the deal by good mannersC. give humorous remarks when you eat with peopleD. learn more about cultural differences17. In which country are you not expected to shake hands with everyone you meet?A. France.B. Germany.C. Norway.D. Italy.18. Which of the following statements is TRUE?A. People in Britain shake hands just as many as people in France.B. In France people prefer talking about business during meals.C. Italian professionals expect to be called by their titles.D. German business people don't like to be called by their surnames.19. If you are not invited out for the evening by your business counterparts in Germany, that meansA. they still haven't taken you as their friend yetB. they want to keep a distance from youC. they are still hesitating whether to do business with you or notD. they don't realize the need to invite you out20. Blue has to get to work and public transportation is not an option. Buses to the suburb where she works are infrequent, so Blue has no choice but to spend US $30 a week on gas.High gas prices, which began to soar in 2004, have Americans-whose way of life depends on cars-complaining, but not doing much to change the country’s car culture.Like Blue, most Americans, except those in major cities, drive to work. Many live in sprawling suburbs which are accessible only by car. The average American spends 55 minutes each day behind the wheel, according to the US Department of Transportation. In 2003, the US’s 290, 000 residents registered 237, 000 vehicles. Many experts say that this car driven lifestyle is unsustainable. “An event like Hurricane Katrina demonstrates how constrained and fragile the energy supply is now,” said Barry Silverthorne, producer of “The End of Suburbia”, a documentary about American car culture. In the 1950s, King Hubert, a geologist working for Shell, a major US oil company, predicted that the rate of oil extraction(提取)could not continue to increase forever. Once all the high quality or easiest-to-reach oil was extracted, oil would become progressively scarcer and more expensive until the supply runs out altogether. Many major oil fields in the Middle East have reached or will soon reach their peaks, says Megan Qinn, director of the Community Solution, an organization that promotes sustainable development.Though most experts agree the US should become less dependent on cars, few have addressed the issue of “how”.“Deep down in America many of us have a sense that we are about to hit a brick wall of some kind. But people are too distracted by Paris Hiton and iPods to notice,”said Silverthorne.1. According to the author, the key reason why Americans need car is that ______.A. they need to drive to workB. they have so many highwaysC. many live in suburbs accessible only by carD. many want to go traveling by car2.According to the statistics in 2003, every US residents owns ______ vehicle(s).A. at least 0.5B. at least 0.8C. at least 1D. at least 1.23. King Hubbert says that oil ______.A. will be replaced by other high quality or easy-to-reach energyB. is reaching its peak graduallyC. will run out immediatelyD. will decrease some day4. The author believes that American car culture is ______.A. a luxuryB. necessaryC. sustainableD. unsustainable5. The last paragraph suggests that ______.A. Americans only care about celebrities and luxury productsB. Americans know they are about to hit a wall due to energy crisisC. Americans know they should make a change of some kindD. Americans are conscious but do nothing about energy shortage答案及解析:文章大意:本文探讨了美国的汽车文化,指出这种开汽车的生活方式不是可持续的,因为世界原油产量不可能永远持续增长。

Our losses change us and change the course of our lives. It is not that one who can never again be happy following an experience of loss. The reality is simply that one can never again be the same.Sudden, unexpected change can create the greatest of all challenges to our peace and serenity. With no advance preparation, we have to adjust to what may be different circumstances than what we′re used to.We may come home from a normal day at work to find our house has burned to the ground. We may lose a loved one through death or divorce. We may lose our property, beliefs, future plans, feelings of safety, or even our sense of identity. The truth is, almost everything in our lives can belost. Most of the time we protect ourselves from this reality. We just don′t think about the fact that we could lose something dear to us in an instant. To be in this thought would make it impossible to get on with our lives in a positive way. We don′t need to fear loss or begin grieving before anything has happened. But we can accept the reality that it could happen, and that will eventually come out of the experience all right if rational acceptance of reality changes our lives. It comes along unexpectedly, and it did. This kind of rational acceptance without irrational fear can help prepare us for an unexpected loss. Two kinds of changes take place within us when we experience a sudden loss. First, we become conscious of our vulnerability. We can no longer achieve that denial which kept us oblivious to all the things that could happen. We know that all kinds of losses can happen to us, not just to other people. We may never feel quite as safe again. The other effect of sudden loss is that eventually we adjust to it. It may take a long time, but we gradually incorporate the loss into our lives and go on.1.According to Paragraph 1, our losses can _________.I. change the course of our livesII. change our experience of lossIII. change the character and personality of ours[A] I only [B] I and II [C] I and III [D] I, II and III2.Examples of the following belong to sudden changes or losses except one may__________. [A] return home from work to see one′s home destroyed by a fire[B] be desperate to find one′s best friend or lover betray himself/herself[C] find what he believes in life turns out a lie[D] find that there can not be so-called feelings of safety or real beliefs3.“This thought”in the sentence “To be in this thought would make it impossible …” may referto .[A] most of the time we protect ourselves from this reality[B] we could lose something dear to us in an instant[C]we just think of something that we could lose in an instant[D] almost everything in our lives can be lost in an instant4.From Paragraph 3, the author′s attitude towards loss or sudden loss in life can be summarized as _____.[A] always being ready for unexpected loss[B] eventually coming out of the loss experience[C] accepting the unexpected loss reasonably and calmly[D] being prepared for unexpected losses though fearfully sometimes5.The best title of this passage can be_____________.[A] Sudden Loss and Change in Our Life[B] Unexpected Loss on Our Way to Success[C] Loss and Misfortune in the World[D] Sudden Loss and Feeling of Safety。

阅读理解The media can impact current events. As a graduate student at Berkeley in the 1960s,I remember experiencing the events related to the People’s Park that were occurring on campus. Some of these events were given national media coverage in the press and on TV. I found it interesting to compare my impressions of what was going on with perceptions obtained from the news media. I could begin to see events of that time feed on news coverage. This also provided me with some healthy insights into the distinctions between these realities.Electronic media are having a greater impact on the people’s lives every day. People gather more and more of their impressions from representations. Television and telephone communications are linking people to a global village,or what one writer calls the electronic city. Consider the information that television brings into your home every day. Consider also the contact you have with others simply by using telephone. These media extend your consciousness and your contact. For example, the video coverage of the 1989 San Francisco earthquake focused on“live action”such as the fires or the rescue efforts. This gave the viewer the impression of total disaster. Television coverage of the Iraqi War also developed an immediacy. CNN reported events as they happened. This coverage was distributed worldwide. Although most people were far away from these events, they developed some perception of these realities. In 1992,many people watched in horror as riots broke out on a sad Wednesday evening in Los Angeles, seemingly fed by video coverage from helicopters. This event was triggered by the verdict(裁定)in the Rodney King beating. We are now in an age where the public can have access to information that enables it to make its own judgments, and most people, who had seen the video of this beating, could not understand how the jury(陪审团)was able to acquit(宣布无罪)the policemen involved. Media coverage of events as they occur also provides powerful feedback that influences events. This can have harmful results,as it seemed on that Wednesday night in Los Angeles. By Friday night the public got to see Rodney King on television pleading,“Can we all get along?”By Saturday, television seemed to provide positive feedback as the Los Angeles riot turned out into a rally for peace. The television showed thousands of people marching with banners and cleaning tools. Because of that, many more people turned out to join the peaceful event they saw unfolding(展开)on television. The real healing,of course, will take much longer, but electronic media will continue to be a part of that process.46. The best title for the passage is .A. The 1989 San Francisco Earthquake and the 1992 Los Angeles RiotsB. How Media Cover EventsC. The 1992 Los Angeles RiotsD. The Impact of Media on Current Events47. All the following statements are true EXCEPT that .A. all the events occurring on the university campus at Berkeley were given national media coverageB. video coverage of the 1989 San Francisco earthquake gave the viewers the impression of total disasterC. electronic media can extend one’s contact with the worldD. those living far away from a certain event can also have some perception of realities by watching television48. The term“electronic city”in Paragraph 2 refers to .A. BerkeleyB. EarthC. Los AngelesD. San Francisco49. The 1992 Los Angeles riots broke out because .A. video coverage from helicopters had made people angryB. video coverage had provided powerful feedbackC. the jury acquitted the policemen who had beaten Rodney KingD. people can make their own judgements50. It can be inferred from the passage that .A. the 1992 Los Angeles riots lasted a whole weekB. Rodney King seemed very angry when he appeared on television on FridayC. media coverage of events as they occur can have either good or bad resultsD. most people who had seen the video of the Rodney King beating agree with the verdict of the jury答案解析:媒体可以给时事带来很大影响。
同等学力英语阅读理解五(附译文和答案) Nowadays, we hear a lot about the growing threat of globalization, accompanied by those warnings that the rich pattern of local life is being undermined, and many dialects and traditions are becoming extinct. But stop and think for a moment about the many positive aspects that globalization is bringing. Read on and you are bound to feel comforted, ready to face the global future, which is surely inevitable now.Consider the Internet, that prime example of our shrinking world. Leaving aside the all-to-familiar worries about pornography and political extremism, even the most narrow-minded must admit that the net offers immeasurable benefits, not just in terms of education, the sector for which it was originally designed, but more importantly on a global level, the spread of news and comment. It will be increasingly difficult for politicians to maintain their regimes of misinformation, as the oppressed will not only find support and comfort, but also be able to organize themselves more effectively.MTV is another global provider that is often criticized for imposing popular culture on the unsuspecting millions around the world. Yet the viewers' judgment on MTV is undoubtedly positive; it is regarded as indispensable by most of the global teenage generation who watch it, a vital part of growing up. And in the final analysis, what harm can a few songs and videos cause? Is the world dominance of brands like Nike and Coca-Cola so bad for us when all is said and done? Sportswear and soft drinks are harmless products when compared to the many other things that have been globally available for a longer period of time—heroin and cocaine, for example. In any case, just because Nike shoes and Coke cans are for sale, it doesn't mean you have to buy them—even globalization cannot deprive the individual of his free will.Critics of globalization can stop issuing their doom and gloom statements. Life goes on, and has more to offer for many citizens of the world than it did for their parents' generation.1. Some people feel sad about globalization because they believe it will ______.A. bring threat to the world peaceB. impact the diversified local lifeC. disrupt their present easy lifestyleD. increase the size of people speaking dialects2. Internet was originally designed ______.A. to promote educationB. to distribute news and commentC. to relieve people of worriesD. to publicize political beliefs3. What is the writer's attitude towards globalization?A. Suspicious.B. Positive.C. Indifferent.D. Contemptuous.4. It is implied in the passage that Nike and Coca-cola ______.A. should not become dominant brandsB. have been ignored by many peopleC. cannot be compared with drugsD. shouldn't have caused so much concern5. Which of the following could be the best title of the passage?A. Globalization Is StandardizationB. Globalization: Like It or Lump ItC. Globalization: Don't Worry, Be HappyD. 同等学力阅读理解练习及答案(4篇精选)Passage 1Faith in medicine runs deep in America. We spend more per person on health care any other nation. Whether we eat too much ore exercise too little, whether we’re turning gray or feeling blue, we look to some pill or procedure to make us better. We assume that devoting ever more dollars to medicine will bring us longer, healthier lives. But There is mounting evidence that each new dollar we devote to the current health care system brings small and diminishing returns to public health. T oday the US spends more than $4,500 per person per year on health care. Costa Rica spends less than $300. Yet life expectancy at birth is nearly identical in both countries.Desp ite the highly publicized “longevity revolution,” life expectancy among the elderly in the US is hardly improving. Yes, we are an aging society, but primarily because of falling birthrates. Younger Americans, meanwhile, are far more likely to be disabled than they were 20 years ago. Most affected are people in their thirties, whose disability rates increased by nearly 130 percent, due primarily to overweight. Why has our huge investment in health care left us so unhealthy? Partly it is because so many promi sed “miracle cures,” from Interferon to gene therapies, have proven to be ineffective or even dangerous. Partly it’s because health care dollars are so concentrated on the terminally ill and the very old that even when medical interventions “work,” the gai ns to average life expectancy are small. And partly it is because of medical errors and adverse reaction to prescription drugs, which cause more deaths than motor vehicle accidents, breast cancer or AIDS. Each year roughly200,000 seniors suffer fatal or life-threatening “adverse drug evens” due to improper drug use or drug interaction. Why don’t Americans live any longer than Costa Ricans? Overwhelmingly, it’s because of differences in behavior. Americans exercise less, eat more, drive more, smoke more, and lead more socially isolated lives. Even at its best, modern medicine can do little to promote productive aging, because by the time most people come in contact with it, their bodies are already compromised by stress, indulgent habits, environmental dangers and injuries.1.Americans in general believe that ___________.A.More money spent on health care may not result in better health.B.Medicine may provide an effective cure for various health problemsC.Health problems caused by bad habits can hardly be solved by medicineD.Higher birthrate can better solve the problem of aging society than medicine./doc/133501380.html,pared with the Americans, Costa Ricans__________A.Have a healthier way of lifeB.Enjoy a longer life expectancyC.Are more dependent on medicineD.Are less concerned about their health3.Which of the following is NOT a reason why health care investment fails to bring a longer life?A.Drug reaction due to improper use of drugs.B.Imbalanced distribution of health care money.C.Soaring prices of both drugs and new therapies.D.Failure of many highly-evaluated medical treatments.4.It is implied in the last paragraph thatA.Medicine should be taken timely before it is too late.B.It is reasonable to question the effectiveness of medicine.C.Poor health conditions leave little room for medicine to work.D.Great efforts should be made to develop new types of medicine.5.The passage is mainly focused on _____.A.The limits of medicineB.The life hazards in the USC.The barriers to a longer lifeD.The problems in health investmentKEYSBACCAPassage 2Just a few years ago, a graduate from Brown University medical school had just a slight understanding about how to care for the elderly. Now, Brown and other U.S. medical schools are plugging geriatric courses into their curricula. The U.S. Census Bureau projects the number of elderly Americans will nearly double to 71 million by 2030. The first members of the Baby Boomer generation, so named for the explosion in births in the years after World War Two, turn 65 in three years. In addition, people are living longer than ever.“The first ripples of the silver tsunami are lapping at the shores of our country, but there is not a coordinated or strategic response taking place in America,” said Richard Besdine, who is director of the geriatrics division at Brown University medical school in Providence.Geriatrics has never been a field of choice for young doctors. Elderly care doctors are paid less than most other physicians and surgeons and the aged can be hard to treat. They have complicated medical histories and their ailments, even such routine illnesses as pneumonia, can be more difficult to diagnose because they may be masked by other conditions. Also, drugs can affect them differently than middle-aged adults. “It’s a hard job; it’s not paid very well; it’s complicated; and there’s very little status within the hierarchy of medical specialties to being a geriatric physician,” said Gavin Hougham, senior program officer and manager of medicine programs at the John A. Hartford Foundation.Out of 800,000 doctors in the U.S., roughly 7,000 are geriatricians, Hougham said. The country needs another 13,000 to adequately care for today’s older population, according to the American Geriatrics Society. The shortfall could reach 36,000 by 2030.To help counter that, private groups are bankrolling medical schools’ emphasis on aging. The Hartford Foundation has given more than $40 million to 27 schools totrain faculty in elderly care, and the Donald W. Reynolds Foundation has given more than $100 million to 30 schools to include more geriatrics content.“If they don’t learn it, they still have to deal with it,” Hougham said. “It’s not that not learning geriatrics will cause these older people to go away. Th ey’re coming whether we’re ready or not.1.What does Richard Besdine mean in paragraph 3A.The large amount of the elderly has created a big problem in America.B.The number of the elderly has been growing beyond the capacity of America.C.America is not ready to cope with the the number of the elderly.D.America is no the ideal place for the elderly to spend the rest of their lives.2.The main point of paragraph 4 is ____A.Why geriatric physician are paid less than other physicians.B.Why doctors show little interest in being geriatric physiciansC.What are the major problems with the elderly care industry.D.What can be done to ensure the healthy development of elderly care.3.It can be learned from the passage that in the U.S.,______A.There is a shortage of geriatric physiciansB.More training is needed for geriatric physiciansC.Demand for geriatric physicians varies across states.D.Care for the elderly will depend more on geriatric physicians.4.The fact that private groups have provided money to medical schools _______A.Highlights the inadequacy of government supportB.Emphasizes the importance of more professional trainingC.Demonstrates the increasing impact of private moneyD.Indicates the growing awareness of the related problem5.According to Hougham, the challenge posed by the elderly isA.TemporaryB. universalC. unavoidableD. controllableKEYSCBADCPassage 3How many of today’s ailments, or even illnesses, are purely psychological? And how far can these be alleviated by the use of drugs? For example a psychiatrist concerned mainly with the emotional problems of old people might improve their state of mind somewhat by the use of anti-depressants but he would not remove the root cause of their depression--the feeling of being useless, often unwanted and handicapped by failing physical powers. One of the most important controversies in medicine today is how far doctors, and particularly psychologists, should depend on the use of drugs for “during” their patients. It is not merely that drugs may have been insufficiently tested and may reveal harmful side effects (as happened in the case of anti-sickness pills prescribed for expectant mothers) but the uneasiness of doctors who feel that they are treating the symptoms of a disease without removing the disease itself. On the other hand, some psychiatrists argue that in many cases (such as chronic depressive illness) it is impossible to get at the root the illness while the patient is in a depressed state. Even prolonged psychiatric care may have no noticeable effect whereas some people can be lifted out of a depression by the use of drugs within a matter of weeks. These doctors feel not only that they have no right to withhold such treatment, but that the root cause of depression can be tackled better when the patient himself feels better. This controversy is concerned, however, with the serious psychological illnesses. It does not solve the problem ofthose whose headaches, indigestion, backache, etc. are due to “nerves”. Commonly a busy family doctor will ascribe them to some physical cause and as a matter of routine prescribe a drug. Once again the symptoms are being cured rather than the disease itself. It may be true to say, as one doctor suggested recently, that over half of the cases that come to the ordinary doctor’s attention are not purely physical ailments. If this is so, the situation is serious indeed.1.The author thinks that drugs used for treating psychological ills______.A.Could be ineffective in some cases/doc/133501380.html,ually have harmful side effectsC.Can greatly alleviate the illnessesD.Can remove the root causes2.The controversy mentioned in the passage focuses on_____.A.Whether psychologists should use drugs to cure their patientsB.How psychologists should treat their patientsC.The fact that all of the drugs have harmful side effectsD.The extent t to which drugs should be used to fight psychological illness3.The passage indicates that psychologists_____.A.Find it impossible to remove a psychological diseaseB.Feel dissatisfied at treating their patients with drugsC.Believe that the root cause of a disease can be ignoredD.Can do nothing if the patient is in a depressed state4.When treating patients with psychological problem, some doctors feel that they ______.A.Are at a loss for treatmentB.Have no right to use drugsC.Have to cure their patients by any meansD.Should use drugs to treat the symptoms5.A family doctor would normally consider a headache or backache as a result of _____.A.A more serious diseaseB.Some emotional problemC.A physical disorderD.Prolonged workKEYSADBDCPassage 4A report published recently brings bad news about air pollution. It suggests that it could be as damaging to our health as exposure to the radiation from the 1986 Ukraine Chernobyl nuclear power disaster. The report was published by the UK Royal Commission on Environmental Pollution. But what can city people do to reduce exposure to air pollution? Quite a lot, it turns out.Avoid walking in busy streets. Choose side streets and parks instead. Pollution levels can fall a considerable amount just by moving a few meters away from the main pollution source--exhaust fumes. Also don’t walk behind smokers. Walk on the windward side of the street where exposure to pollutants can be 50 percent less than on the downwind side.Sitting on the driv er’s side of a bus can increase your exposure by 10 percent, compared with sitting on the side nearest the pavement. Sitting upstairs on a double-decker can reduce exposure. It is difficult to say whether traveling on anunderground train is better or worse than taking the bus. Air pollution on underground trains tends to be less toxic than that at street level, because underground pollution is mostly made up of tiny iron particles thrown up by wheels hitting the rails. But diesel and petrol fumes have a mixture of pollutants. When you are crossing a road, stand well back from the curb while you wait for the light to change. Every meter really does count when you are close to traffic. As the traffic begins to move, fumes can be reduced in just a seconds. The payroll register constitutes the treasurer department's authority to pay the employees. Payment is usually made in the form of a check drawn on the company's regular bank account. Pre-numbered payroll checks should be used, and there should be independent verification of the agreement of the checks with the payroll register in detail and in total.
Payroll checks should be distributed directly to employees, on proper identification, by treasurer's department personnel. The checks should not be returned to payroll for distribution since the payroll department would then have control over both preparing and paying the payroll. Alternatively, payroll checks may be deposited directly in the employee's checking account.
Payment of employees in cash is the exception rather than the rule. This form of payment is more easily influenced by errors, irregularities, and robbery than payment by check. Following payment, check numbers are entered on the register, the preparation and payment of the payroll are programmed on a computer.
A termination notice should be issued by the personnel department on the completion of an individual's employment with the company. Copies of the termination authorization should be sent to the employee's supervisor and to payroll, and a copy should be filed in the employee's personnel record. The proper execution of this function is vital in preventing terminated employees from continuing on the payroll. The subsequent diversion of such payroll checks to an unauthorized individual has been responsible for many payroll cheat through the years.
Every company is expected to fulfill the legal requirements relevant to the filing of payroll tax returns and the payment of the resulting taxes. Ordinarily, the payroll department prepares the tax returns and a check is issued through the guarantor system in payment of the taxes. The responsibility for the filing of returns before due dates should be assigned to a payroll department supervisor. Furthermore, there should be independent verification within that department of the accuracy and completeness of the return. Effective control over tax returns is necessary to avoid penalties for late or incorrect filings.
