The Integumentary system
This system refers to the skin or any layer of membrane or tissue that covers an organ. The integumentary system consists of two main layers:
1)Epidermis: the outer layer
2)Dermis: the inner layer that lies beneath the epidermis.
Function of the skin:
Protection
Excretion (sweat)
Water reservoir
Maintaining body temperature
Sensory (feeling the heat, cold, touch, and pain)
Terms related to the integumentary system:
Cryo: cold
Cutis: skin
Derma: skin
Leuko, leuco: white
Melano: black
Myco: fungus
Myo: muscle
Onycho, onych: nail
Pilo, pilus: hair
Psora: to itch
Pyo, py: pus
Sclero: hard
Seb: oil, fat
Tricho: hair
Ungulo: nail
Vesico, vesica: blister.
Some diagnostic terms:
Alopcia: loss or absence of hair
Cellulitis: inflammation of connective tissue
Dermatitis: inflammation of the skin
Herpes: inflammation of the skin by herpes virus
Impetigo: bacterial infection of skin
Malignant melanoma: cancerous cells on skin, eyes, membranes Papule: raised spot on skin such as wart, acne, mole
Pediculosis: infestation with lice
Pemphix: blister
Scabies: skin infection caused by mites
Tinea: ringworm
Ulcer: break in skin or mucous membrane
Varicella: chicken pox
Some operative terms:
Biopsy: excision of tissue for examination
Curettage: removal of superficial lesions with a curette Debridement: removal of dead tissue from around the wound Escharotomy: removal of burn scar tissue
Skin grafting: tissue taken from one place to replace a damaged tissue elsewhere
