In the spring of the fourth year of Qingli Teng Zijing was demoted to Yuezhou prefecture chief. By the next year the administration was functioning, people were harmonious and all neglected tasks were being undertaken. Then the Yueyang Tower was renovated by expanding its existing scale and inscribing the poetries and proses of the Tang Dynasty and contemporaries on the walls. I was entrusted to write an essay to commemorate this matter.
I can see the beautiful scenery of Yuezhou prefecture is focused on Dongting Lake, which connects the hills of distant place and swallows the river water of the Yangtze River. It's so huge and vast that it seems boundless. In the morning the sunlight is beautiful and in the evening the sky is overcast, making the scenery of Yueyang Tower ever-changing. This is the grand sight of Yueyang Tower that has been described in great detail by predecessors. Nevertheless, the disgraced officials and poets often gather here, because this place is leading to the Wu Gorge to the north and until Xiao River and Xiang River to the south. Should there be no difference in their feelings caused by seeing the same situations若夫霪雨霏霏,连月不开﹔阴风怒号,浊浪排空﹔日星隐曜,山岳潜形;商旅不行,樯倾楫摧﹔薄暮冥冥,虎啸猿啼﹔登斯楼也,则有去国怀乡,忧谗畏讥,满目萧然,感极而悲者矣!In the rainy season, sometimes for a whole month there is no sunny day, chilly wind gusts, and turbid waves rush toward the sky, hiding the sun and the stars shining, and concealing the mountains' shape. This lake is impassable for businessmen and tourists, mast is collapsed, and oars are broken. In the evening the sky is darkened, the tigers are growling and the apes are crying. At this time climbing the Yueyang Tower, people should have the feeling for leaving the Capital, missing home, fearing slander and criticism. At this time the observed scenes are so depressing that they are feeling extreme sad. As for the warm spring, the sun is shining brightly, and the lake is calming. The lake and sky come to mingle with each other, as if the watery blue is reaching far beyond the horizon. The Sandpipers sometimes fly and sometimes rest, and beautiful fishes swim in the lake. The dense grasses along the lakeshores and orchids on the sandbar give forth their fragrance. Sometimes mist and clouds are completely dissipated, and the moonlight is freely streaming down, spilling golden lights on the lake surface. When there is no wind, quiet shadow of the moon is like a jade submerged in the water. Fishermen's songs are echoing each other, so the fun should never end! At this time climbing the Yueyang Tower, people should be completely relaxed and happy to disregard all favors or humiliations, and raise winebowls in the wind, beaming with joy!

岳阳楼(yuèyáng lóu)Yueyang TowerOnce the most magnificant tower in ChinaChina has many centuries-old towers that are popular not only because of their grandioseappearance and ingenious architectural designs, but also for their close association with Chineseliterature and arts.Yueyang Tower is definitely one of the best representatives of this type of architecture.Located on the east shore of Dongting Lake in today's Hunan Province in the southern part ofcentral China, the tower wasfirst built during the Three Kingdoms Period (220–280 AD) as a tallinspection platform to command and train waterborne troops and fleets since it offered apanoramic view of the whole lake, which used to be the largest freshwater lake in the country.Later, it was called the Baling Tower after the name of a nearby city. During the Tang Dynasty(618–907 AD), Baling City was renamed Yueyang City and the tower became Yueyang Tower. Like many other ancient Chinese buildings, the tower was renovated and reconstructed severaltimes during its history. The tower we see today was rebuilt in 1879 during the Qing Dynasty(1644–1911).The square, three-story building stands 25.35 meters tall and occupies 251 square meters of floorspace. The tower is built completely of wood, with no nails or rivets. It is held together by mortiseand tenon joints. In the middle of the structure, there are four gigantic pillars of nanmu, a superior, durable wood, with a diameter of 50 centimeters each, running all the way to the roof. They are surroundedby12 round pillars to prop up the second floor. Outside, thereare another 12 catalpa wood pillarsto support the flying eaves.Instead of various hip roofs commonly seen in ancient Chinese buildings, Yueyang Tower has a"helmet roof." The helmet roof doesn't have a main roof ridge. Instead, all ridges are joined atthe tip of the roof, known as "roof crown."Bulging out near the top and slimmed back at the lower part, the roof was so named because ofits resemblance to the helmets worn by generals in ancient times.Yueyang Tower is the largest surviving ancient building in China that features a helmet roof.Because the tower commands a breathtaking panoramic view of Dongting Lake, it has long beena popular attraction for tourists as well as for poets, writers and artists. Many famous poets in Chinese history, including Li Bai, Du Fu and Bai Juyi, visited the tower andwrote widely read poems. However, none of them rivals the popularity of the prose entitled, "OnYueyang Tower," written by Fan Zhongyan (989–1052 AD), a politician and literary giant in theNorthern Song Dynasty (960–1127).In the autumn of 1046, Fan was invited by his friend Teng Zijing (991–1047), then a localgovernor, to write a preface for the newly renovated Yueyang Tower. At that time, the tower already had a widely acclaimed reputation as the most magnificent towerin China. Both Fan and Teng were then experiencing some setbacks in their careers as politicians. Fanwrote the prose not only to praise the tower, but also to express his feelings and euphemisticallyadvise his friend to be more broad-minded and resilient.nwrote the prose not only to praise the tower, but also to express his feelings and euphemisticallyadvise his friend to be more broad-minded and resilient.Yueyang Tower faces Dongting Lake in Hunan Province in central China.Today, nearly every educated Chinese speaker remembers Fan's lines such as: "To be the first toworry about the world's woes, and the last to enjoy the universal weal."Or, "Don't be pleased by worldly gains, or feel sad for personal losses."Together with the Yellow Crane Tower in central China's Hubei Province and the Pavilion ofPrince T eng in east China's Jiangxi Province, Yueyang Tower is widely admired as one of theThree Great Towers south of the Yangtze River, the longest waterway flowing across China.Pictorial dictionary·Typical types of roof in Chinese architectureHelmet roof —Doesn't have a main roof ridge and all ridges are joined at the tip of the roof, known as "roof crown."Hip —With four slopes and five ridges, it is the highest in rank in ancient architecture.Hard gable —With a main ridge and four diagonal ridges, it has only two slopes.Hip and gable—One of the most common roof styles, with nine ridges and six slopes.Suspended gable—Similar to hard gable, with protrusions covering the gables.Round ridge —With two slopes connected with a curved surface, it was mostly used for gardenarchitecture.。
