We discuss here the major types of media used in advertising. We focus our attention on seven types of advertising: television, newspapers, radio, magazines, out-of-home, Internet, and direct mail.TelevisionTelevision is an attractive medium for advertising because it delivers mass audiences to advertisers. When you consider that nearly three out of four Americans have seen the game show Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? Y ou can understand the power of television to communicate with a large audience. When advertisers create a brand, for example, they want to impress consumers with the brand and its image. Television provides an ideal vehicle for this type of communication. But television is an expensive medium, and not all advertisers can afford to use it.Television's influence on advertising is fourfold. First, narrowcasting means that television channels are seen by an increasingly narrow segment of the audience. The Golf Channel, for instance, is watched by people who play golf, Home and Garden Television is seen by those interested in household improvement projects. Thus, audiences are smaller and more homogeneous(具有共同特点的) than they have been in the past. Second, there is an increase in the number of television channels available to viewers, and thus advertisers. This has also resulted in an increase in the sheernumber of advertisements to which audiences are exposed. Third, digital recording devices allow audience members more control over which commercials they watch. Fourth, control over programming is being passed from the networks to local cable operators and satellite programmers.NewspapersAfter television, the medium attracting the next largest annual ad revenue is newspapers. The New York Times, which reaches a national audience, accounts for $1 billion in ad revenue annually. It has increased its national circulation(发行量) by 40% and is now available for home delivery in 168 cities. Locally, newspapers are the largest advertising medium.Newspapers are a less expensive advertising medium than television and provide a way for advertisers to communicate a longer, more detailed message to their audience than they can through television. Given new production techniques, advertisements can be printed in newspapers in about 48 hours, meaning newspapers are also a quick way of getting the message out. Newspapers are often the most important form of news for a local community, and they develop a high degree of loyalty from local readers.RadioAdvertising on radio continues to grow. Radio is often used in conjunction with outdoor bill-boards(广告牌) and the Internet to reach even more customers than television. Advertisers are likely to use radio because it is a less expensive medium than television, which means advertisers can afford to repeat their ads often. Internet companies are also turning to radio advertising. Radio provides a way for advertisers to communicate with audience members at all times of the day. Consumers listen to radio on their way to school or work, at work, on the way home, and in the evening hours. Two major changes-satellite and Internet radio-will force radio advertisers to adapt their methods. Both of these radio forms allow listeners to tune in stations that are more distant than the local stations they could receive in the past. As a result, radio will increasingly attract target audiences who live many miles apart.MagazinesNewsweeklies, women's titles, and business magazines have all seen increases in advertising because they attract the high-end market. Magazines are popular with advertisers because of the narrow market that they deliver. A broadcast medium such as network television attracts all types of audience members, but magazine audiences are more homogeneous. If you read Sports Illustrated., for example, you will have much in common with the magazine's other readers. Advertisers see magazines as an efficient way of reaching target audience members.Advertisers using the print media---magazines and newspapers---will need to adapt to two main changes. First, the Internet will bring larger audiences to local newspaper. These audiences will be more diverse and geographically dispersed (分散) than in the past. Second, advertisers will have to understand how to use an increasing number of magazines for their target audiences. Although some magazines will maintain national audiences, a large number of magazines will entertain narrower audiences.Out-of-home advertisingOut-of-home advertising, also called place-based advertising, has become an increasingly effective way of reaching consumers, who are more active than ever before. Many consumers today do not sit at home and watch television. Using billboards, newsstands, and bus shelters for advertising is an effective way of reaching these on-the-go consumers. More consumers travel longer distances to and from work, which also makes out-of-home advertising effective. Technology has changed the nature of the billboard business, making it a more effective medium than in the past. Using digital printing, billboard companies can print a billboard in 2 hours, compared with 6 days previously. This allows advertisers more variety in the types of messages they create because they can change their messages more quickly.InternetAs consumers become more comfortable with online shopping, advertisers will seek to reach this market. As consumers get more of their news and information from the Internet, the ability of television and radio to get the word out to consumers will decrease. The challenge to Internet advertisers is to create ads that audience members remember.Internet advertising will play a more prominent role in organizations' advertising in the near future. Internet audiences tend to be quite homogeneous, but small. Advertisers will have to adjust their methods to reach these audiences and will have to adapt their persuasive strategies to the online medium as well.Direct mailA final advertising medium is direct mail, which uses mailings to consumers to communicate a client's message. Direct mail includes newsletters, postcards and special promotions. Direct mail is an effective way to build relationships with consumers. For many businesses, direct mail is the most effective form of advertising. 注意:此部分试题请在答题卡1上作答。

It’s strong medicine, r esearchers are learning. Even the physical act is good for you, says William Fry, professor at Stanford University and pioneer in laughter research. It increases b lood flow and contracts abdominal muscles. But the benefits go beyond a workout. The most ast onishing evidence of laughter’s power comes from a 1997 study of 48 heart-attack patients. Half-watched comedy sh ows for 30 minutes every day; the rest served as controls. After a ye ar, ten patients in the control group had suffered repeat heart attac ks, compared with only two in the group that watched the shows. Can a good laugh help patients get well? In an experiment at the Univ ersity of California at Los Angeles, called Rx Laughter, scientists p lan to test the effect of laughter in children with serious illnesses, including cancer. Early results suggest that funny videos help kids handle uncomfortable or painful procedures.Justin Ybarra, 13, already knows that. He was in considerable pain wh en he woke up from surgery --- until Bill Marx, a volunteer for Rx La ughter, appeared at his bedside. Marx told jokes, made faces and danc ing around the hospital room. “Having something to laugh at took my mind off the pain,” says Justin. “When you’re laughing, you can’t help but feel better.”26. The main idea of the passage is ________.A) researchers are doing experiments on laughterB) laughing is good medicine for the patientsC) patients usually prefer comedies to tragediesD) children all like clowns very muchQuestions 31-35 are based on Passage Two:Under proper conditions, sound waves will be reflected from a hil lside or other such obstruction. Sound travels at the rate of about o ne fifth of a mile per second. If the hill is eleven hundred feet awa y, it takes two seconds for the sound to travel to the hill and back. Thus, by timing the interval between a sound and its reflection (the echo), you can estimate the distance to an obstruction.During World War II the British used a practical application of this principle to detect German planes on their way to bomb London long be fore the enemy was near the target. They used radio waves instead of sound waves, since radio waves can penetrate fog and clouds. The outn umbered Royal Air Force (RAF) always seemed to the puzzled Germans to be lying in wait at the right time and never to be surprised. It was radio echoes more than anything else that won the battle of Britain. Since the radio waves were used to tell the direction in which to send the RAF planes and the distance to send them (Their range of light, in other words), the device was called radio directing and ranging, and from the initials the word radar (雷达) was coined.31. Sound waves reflected from a hill can be used to estimate the ___ _____.A) height of the hill B) speed of soundC) distance to the hill D) intensity of sound32. It may be said that we think with our muscles in somewhat the same way that we listen to music with our bodies. You surely are not surprised to be told that you usually listen to mu sic not only with your ears but with your whole body. Few people can listen to music that is more or less familiar without moving their bo dy or, more specifically, some part of their body. Often when one lis tens to a symphonic (交响乐) concert on the radio, he is tempted to d irect the orchestra even though he knows there is a competent conduct or on the job.Strange as this behavior may be, there is a very good reason for it. One cannot derive all possible enjoyment from music unless he partici pates, so to speak, in its performance. The listener “feels” himsel f into the music with more or less pronounced motions of his body. The muscles of the body actually participate in the mental process ofthinking in the same way, but this participation is less obvious bec ause it is less pronounced.36. According to selection, muscle participation in the process of th inking is ________.A) deliberate B) obvious C) not readily apparent D) very pronounced Questions 41-45 are based on Passage Four:Chess must be one of the oldest games in the world. An Arab trave ler in India in the year 900 wrote that it was played “long, long ag o”. Chess was probably invented in India, and it has been played eve rywhere from Japan to Europe since 1400. The name “chess” is intere sting. When one player is attacking the other’s king, he says, in En glish, “check”. When the king has been caught and cannot move anywh ere, he says “check mate”. These words come from Persian. “Shah ma t” means “the king is dead”. That is when the game is over, and on e player has won.Such an old game changes very slowly. It would be interesting to know why this has happened! Chess ta kes time and thought, but it is a game for all kinds of people. You d on’t have to be a champion in order to enjoy it. It is not always played by two people sitting at the same table. The first time the Amer icans beat the Russians was in a match played by radio. 18 Beautiful Essaysfor the Final Examination of Audio-Visual-Oral English (I) for BIT First-Year Undergraduates (Examination Time: January 10th, 2009)1. On IdealsEveryone cherishes his ideals, fanciful or substantial. We dreamed of becoming scientists when we were school boys and girls; now we hope for a better society and are determined to work for it. And we strive, one way or another, to realize our ideals. One should be sensible whether one’s ideal is well-founded or not. If it is, one has to plan and work hard for its realization. Effort, skill and persistence are all necessary. And very often, one has to get help from others, including advice and support in different forms. In most cases, the realization of personal ideals is in the interest of the society. On the other hand, social ideals such as the preservation of natural environment for the improvement of human living conditions and the production of sufficient material wealth for the world’s population concern the whole of society, and their realization calls for contribution by all. We should always try our best to help such ideals come true.2. WasteMankind is wasting things everywhere and every day. Wherever we turn, we can see that paper, bottles and cans are thrown away; food is wasted just because of its poor taste; clothes are discarded simply due to their old fashion. Not only are things and money are wasted, but natural resources are abused as well. Trees are cut down merely for fuel; wildlife is killed simply for food; oil, coal and minerals are exploited in a bad way. It is time to call for an end to waste. We must save natural resources and make full use of them; otherwise human beings will be faced with the scarcity of natural resources and suffer from the pollution caused by waste.3. No Pains, No GainsThe height which great men reach and keep is not attained by asudden flight. Most of us feel envious of the famous and successful people. We donot understand why they are so popular and honored while we are mere simple common folks. In our misconception, we think thatpeople are prosperous because they are especially gifted or that they are “just lucky”.All these have taken root in our stubborn minds, and we refuse to believe that most great men have a mind which is the same as, or perhaps even simpler and duller than ours.Yet, their triumphs are great. Why? Because they are apt to fight difficulties with perseverance and without fatigue, undergo sufferings without minding the wounds; they realize that hardships form the road which they must pass through before reaching their destination. Their endurance is more powerful than that of ours for the simple reason that they submit without complaint to each storm in life.4. Rome Was Not Built in a DayThe good old proverb, “Rome was not built in a day,” reminds us that great things are never done without much time and labor. It takes us back to Rome, the capital of the greatest empire of the ancient world and the most brilliant city of ancient times. Indeed, Rome was built through the labors of many a great man who had been striving against difficulties. As human beings, we are eager to win merits for ourselves. It is, however, only patience as well as endurance that can help us to succeed in performing great deeds; for difficulties are in fact unavoidable, unless we do not engage in anything at all.Young people are, however, mostly impatient. Brave as they may be in the beginning, they often give up halfway in the face of what seems to be insurmountable. Most of such a type can hardly expect to succeed.5. Don’t Give UpIf we would ever accomplish anything in life, let us not forget thatwe must persevere. If we would learn our lessons in school, wemust be diligent and not give up whenever we come across anything difficult. We will find many of our lessons very hard, butlet us consider that the harder they are the better they will be for us if we will persevere and learn them thoroughly. But there are some among us who are ready to give up when they come to a hard example in mathematics, and say, “I can’t do this.”They never will if they feel so. “I can’t”never does anything worthwhile; but “I’ll try” accomplishes wonders. Let us remember that we will meet with difficulties all through life. They are in the pathway of everyone. If we will only try and keep trying, we will be sure to conquer and overcome every difficulty we meet. If we have a hard lesson today, let us strive to learn it well and then we will be prepared for a harder one tomorrow. And if we learn to master hard lessons in school, it will prepare us to overcome the hard things that we will meet in life when our schooldays are over.6. Time is a BankEach of us has a bank whose name is TIME. Every morning, TIME credits you with 86,400 seconds. Every night it writes off, as loss, whatever of this you have failed to invest in good purposes. It carries over no balances. It allows no overdraft. Each day it opens a new account for you. Each night it burns the remains of the day. If you fail to use the day deposits, the loss is yours. There is no going back. There is no drawing against tomorrow. You must live in the present on today’s deposits. Invest it so as to get from it the utmost in health, happiness and success! The clock is running. Make the most of today.7. How to Learn English WellOf course, every student wants to study English well, but how?First we should know the importance of learning it. We’d better find out the obstacles we have in our studies and try to solve them as early as possible.Secondly, we must form good habits in our English studies and we can obtain better results in the following ways:1. We must plan our time carefully. Each day we set aside enough time to complete our normal reading and work assignments. Besides study we should have time for other activities.2. We should make good use of our time in class. While listening, we can also take notes. That means less work later.3. Study and review our lessons regularly. We should go over the important points in each lesson at least once a month.Lastly whenever we meet difficulties in our English studies, we should not lose heart but try to overcome them. And we can ask our teachers for advice. In doing so we would make great progress in our studies.8. The College ExperienceGoing to college! What a thrill! It’s a trip that has everything greatthat you have heard about if you make it so. It is also a very seriousbusiness. To a great extent, you will be on your own. True, there are an awful lot of people ready to help you, but generally you musttake the initiative and seek them out.Today’s world is full of precious knowledge, whether it be in thearts, literature, a profession, or a vocational skill. College is your chance of a lifetime to explore these areas. Each facet can be as exciting when discovered by you as it was when discovered by the original author or explorer. Let yourself explore beyond your immediate career objectives. A student in auto mechanics in most schools also can take courses in history, philosophy, music, or art. There is no reason a craftsman can’t also be a great thinker, or an explorer in the vast areas of unlimited knowledge. For a rich full life he or she should make the most of the opportunities at hand. Going to college means a lot more than earning a grade. To limit your college experience will be a waste to you and to all of people, past and present, who have invested their pennies, dimes and dollars —often at great personal sacrifice —to make educational opportunities open for you. Putting it bluntly, college is a place to be greedy —take all you can get and then some more. Thus, as you stand on the threshold of your college career, commit yourself and stand by that commitment. From the first day of class, discipline yourself to make learning fun, not a chore, and to get the most from the educational opportunities open to you.9. On ReadingReading is to the mind what exercise is to the body. As by the one, health is preserved, strengthened, and invigorated; by the other, virtue, which is the health of the mind, is kept alive, cherished and confirmed. But exercise becomes tedious and painful, when wemake use of it only as the means of health, so reading is apt to grow uneasy and burdensome when we apply ourselves to it for our improvement in virtue. For this reason, the virtue which we gather from a fable or an allegory is like the health we get by hunting; as we are engaged in an agreeable pursuit that draws us on with pleasure, and makes us insensible of the fatigues that accompany it.10. FriendsFriends are important. It has often been said that “No man can live like an island.”As our population increases in size, this is becoming increasingly true. A person will have trouble coping with society without friends.Friends should not be confused with acquaintances. Acquaintances are people whom you may see often. But, you could never share joy and sadness with an acquaintance. Acquaintances are usually with you for what they can get. Maybe, they like to be with you because you are popular. People usually have few friends and many acquaintances.Friends are always there when you need them. They are dependable and responsible. They share your sorrow and happiness. They are not interested in what they can get from you. They influence your development, maturity and sense of responsibility. They also warn you when you are in danger of doing wrong. Yes, friends are wonderful. It is nice to enjoy the warmth radiating from good friends.11. Don’t Seek PraiseIt is quite easy to get approval if we ask enough people, or if we askthose who are likely to tell us what we want to hear. The likelihoodis that they will say nice things rather than be too critical. Also, we tend to edit out the bad so that we hear only what we want to hear.So if you have produced a pleasantly acceptable piece of work, you will have proved to yourself that it’s good simply because others have said so. It’s probably OK. But then it’s probably not great, either. If, instead of seeking approval, you ask, “What’s wrong with it? How can I make it better?”, you are more likely to get a truthful, critical answer. You may even get an improvement on your idea. And you are still in a position to reject the criticism if you think it is wrong.12. Don’t Cover Your IdeasGive away everything you know, and more will come back to you. You will remember from school other students preventing you from seeing their answers by placing their arms around their exercise books or exam paper. It is the same at work, and people are secretive with ideas. “Don’t tell them because they’ll take credit for it.”The problem with hoarding is that you end up living off your reserves. Eventually you’ll become stale. If you give away everything you have, you are left with nothing. This forces you to look, to be aware, to replenish. Somehow the more you give away, the more comes back to you.Ideas are open knowledge. Don’t claim ownership. They’re not your ideas anyway: they’re someone else’s. They are out there floating by on the ether. You just have to put yourself in a frame of mind to pick them up.13. Don’t Escape from ProblemsSome people who find themselves unable to solve a problem reactby just giving up. But it is not good to escape from problems bygiving up or by making excuses for failures. You may be sure that all young people go through the same difficult process that you aregoing through: meeting new situations, developing new skills, and testing their abilities. If you are unhappy about something, face it. Try to state the problem in a few words, so that you will know exactly what you are up against. Then see if you can “put your finger”on the cause of your unhappiness. In many cases, we only “think” there is no solution to a particularproblem. But often we can overcome the problem and achieve the goal by making a direct attack.14. ImaginationImagination is a world in which everybody enjoys the greatest freedom. You may imagine anything you like and keep it a secret. But some people are quite ready to share their interesting imagination with others.Imagination is a distorted reflection of reality and our wish. In ancient times when people knew very little about nature, imagination often involved gods. With the increase of knowledge, our imagination is generally more scientific.Imagination is not quite so absurd as some people may think. In fact, if man limited his mind to what he knows in reality, he could never learn anything new.15. SunlightIt is cold, so cold. The frost has the earth in its grasp, and the trees stand stiff in their coats of rime. We shiver, and think, will Winter never end?Take heart, for the earth is just sleeping and renewing its strength. Soon it will awaken, the green shoots will start to appear, and the sun will gradually gain strength and warmth. Just like life, in fact. From time to time we all need a period of rest in which to think and restore our jaded spirits, a peaceful interlude to reflect, to plan, and give ourselves strength for the days ahead. Keep that thought in mind, and today’s cold and frost will surely be full of hope for the future.16. Think PositivelyIf you want to get somewhere, you have to know where you want to go and how to get there. Then just never, never, never give up.The secret of life isn’t what happens to you, but what you do with what happens to you.Help other people to cope with their problems and your own will be easier to cope with.Never use the word “impossible”seriously again. Toss it into the verbal wastebasket.Self-confidence is the first secret of success. So believe yourself! Stand up to your obstacles and do something about them. You will find that they haven’t half the strength you think they have.Joy increases as you give it and diminishes as you try to keep it for yourself. In giving it, you will accumulate more joy than you ever believed possible. How you think about a problem is more important than the problem itself, so always think positively.Plunge head first into life; give it all you’ve got. And life will give all it has to you.17. Natural BeautyNatural beauty is an all-pervading presence. The universe is itstemple. It unfolds into the numberless flowers of spring. It wavesin the branches of trees and the green blades of grass. It haunts the depth of the earth and the sea. It gleams from the hues of the shelland the precious stone. And not only these minute objects but the oceans, the mountains, the clouds, the stars, the rising and the setting sun —all overflow with beauty. The power to appreciate beauty not only increases our sources of happiness —it enlarges our moral nature. Beauty calms our restlessness and dispels our cares. Go into the field or the woods, spend a summer day by the sea or the mountains, and all your little perplexities and anxieties will vanish. Listen to sweet music, and your foolish fears and petty jealousies will pass away. The beauty of the world helps us to seek and find the beauty of goodness.18. Sand and StoneThe story goes that two friends were walking through the desert. During some point of the journey they had an argument, and one friend slapped the other one in the face. The one who got slapped was hurt, but without saying anything, he wrote in the sand: “Today my best friend slapped me in the face.”They kept on walking, until they found an oasis, where they decided to take a bath. The one who had been slapped got stuck in the mire and started drowning, but his friend saved him. After he recovered from the fright, he wrote on a stone: “Today my best friend saved my life.”The friend, who had slapped and saved his best friend, asked him, “After I hurt you, you wrote in the sand, and now, you write on a stone, why?”The other friend replied, “When someone hurts us, we should write it down in sand, where the winds of forgiveness can erase it away; but when someone does something good for us, we must engrave it in stone where no wind can ever erase it.”Learn to write your hurts in the sand and to carve your blessing in stone.。

Reading ComprehensionDirections: After reading the following passages, you will find 5 questions or unfinished statement. For each question or statement there are 4 choices marked A, B, C or D. You should make the correct choice.Passage OneJust as exercise strengthens the heart and lungs, bones and muscles, it may also power up the brain. A succession of scientific studies of animals implies that physical activity has a positive effect on mental functioning.“It’s clear that the brain benefits from exercise,” says scientist William Greenough of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. His studies with rats have demonstrated two primary effects of activity: vigorous physical exercise provides the brain with more fuel, and skill-based exercise increases the formation of connections in the brain, which, according to the proposals of some scientists, may make the brain better able to process information. In one experiment, laboratory rats were separated into three groups. One group was exercised by running inside an automatic wheel, a second group improved their skills in a complicated obstacle course, and a third group was inactive.“The animals that learned to go through the obstacle course exhibited a greater number of brain connections than the animals in the exercised or inactive groups,” Greenough said. “In contrast, the animals that exercised inside the automatic wheel possessed a greater density of blood vessels in the brain than did either of the other two groups of animals.”Learning a new dance step may boost the brain in the same way that learning a language can, he says. And if the dance is a good physical exercise as well, the benefits multiply. Y oung brains may be especially able to boost brain power through exercise, suggested another of Greenough’s experiments that showed the most significant changes in the brain occurred among rats that had been exercised when very young. And while animals aren’t people, he says it is logical to make the inference that an effect found in rats may also apply to humans.Human studies have focused primarily on older adults and suggest that regular exercise can improve the speed with which the brain processes information. Measurements made by Arthur Kramer at the University of Illinois demonstrated that inactive adults, aged 63 to 82, could hit buttons faster in response to a tone after they went through a 10-week water exercise course. A corresponding control group that didn’t exercise showed no improvement.41.__________ can benefit from physical exercise.A. Only the heart and lungsB. Only bones and musclesC. Only the brainD. All of the above42. What makes the brain better able to process information?A. V igorous physical exercise.B. Skill-based exercise.C. Both of them.D. Neither of them.43. One possible reasons for scientists to make experiments with rats or other animals is that _____.A. rats benefits from the experimentsB. the experiments can boost the brains of the ratsC. an effect found in rats may also apply to humansD. rats and humans are very much alike45. Which word in Paragraph 6 tells us that older adults were divided into two groups in the humans studies?A. Corresponding.B. Inactive.C. Older.D. Faster./Passage T woMary Engelbreit was a talented but struggling artist in her mid-twenties when she flew to New Y ork from her native Saint Louis, hoping to find work illustrating children’s books----her life’goal. So she was disappointed when all the book publishers she visited turned her down. One even suggested her drawings might be better suited to greeting cards.“I was crushed,” she admits. Greeting cards seemed a comedown from her high expectations, but the advice stayed with her, and she decided to give it a try. The results transformed her life forever.Today Mary Engelbreit sells an astonishing 14 million greeting cards a year. Her popular designs appear on more than 2,000 products, including books, calendars, and kitchen items. She runs a retail company and the annual sales are in the $100 million range----all as a result of that fateful, disappointing trip to New Y ork.Once you know Engelbreit’s distinctive style, you can recognize her cards from 200 paced away----bright, funny, and with an eye to the past. Engelbreit is cheerful, down-to-earth, humorous, and always cute. “ I think the world could use more cuteness,”she explains. Indeed, it’s her trademark. With her work taking off in so many directions, it was perhaps inevitable that Engelbreitwould eventually realize her dream of illustrating a children’s book. In 1993 she created drawings for a children’book and saw it become a best-seller. At the same time she made a surprising discovery: “It was fun, but oddly enough, I like doing greeting cards best.”46. According to the writer, Mary Engelbreit finally realized her dream of illustrating children’sbook because____.A. she learned how to illustrate children’s booksB. she kept her feet firmly on the groundC. she overcame many difficultiesD. she succeeded in many different waysPassage ThreeAmy High is decked out in the traditional pink dress and golden stole of ancient Rome. She bursts into a third-grade classroom and greets her students: "Salvete, omnes!" (Hello, everyone!) The kids respond in kind, and soon they are studying derivatives. "How many people are in a duet?" High asks. All the kids know the answer, and when she asks how they know, a boy responds, "Because duo is 'two' in Latin." High replies, "Plaudite!" and the 14 kids erupt in applause. They learn the Latin root later, or side, and construct such English words as bilateral and quadrilateral. "Latin's going to open up so many doors for you," High says. "Y ou're going to be able to figure out the meaning of words you've never seen before."High teaches at Providence Elementary School in Fairfax City, V a., which has a lot riding on the success of her efforts. As part of V irginia's high-stakes testing program, schools that don't boost their scores by the year 2007 could lose state funding. So Fairfax City, just 18 miles southwest of the White House, has upgraded its two crumbling elementary schools with new high-tech television studios, computer labs and one very old feature--mandatory Latin. Here lies one of the more counterintuitive developments of the standardized-testing movement: Though some critics complain that teachers are forced to dumb down their lessons and "teach to the test,"some schools are offering more challenging course work as a way of engaging students. In the past three years, scores of elementary schools in high-stakes testing states such as Texas, V irginia and Massachusetts have added Latin programs. Says Allen Griffith, a member of the Fairfax City school board: "If we’re trying to improve English skills, teaching Latin is an awfully effective, proved method."This is not your father's Latin, which was taught to elite college-bound high schoolers and drilled into them through memorization. Its tedium and perceived irrelevance almost drove Latin from public schools. Today's growth in elementary school Latin has been spurred by new, interactive oral curriculums, enlivened by lessons in Roman mythology and culture. "One thing that makes it engaging for kids is the goofy fun of investigating these guys in togas," says Marion Polsky, author of First Latin: A Language Discovery Program, the textbook used in Fairfax City.Latin enthusiasts believe that if young students learn word roots, they will be able to decipher unfamiliar words. (By some estimates, 65% of all English words have Latin roots.) Latin is an almost purely phonetic language. There are no silent letters, and each letter represents a single sound. That makes it useful in teaching reading. And once kids master the grammatical structure of Latin--which is simple, logical and consistent--they will more easily grasp the many grammatical exceptions in English.51.From the first Paragraph we learn that _____.A. the students show little interest in learning LatinB. the students say hello to their teacher in LatinC. Amy High teaches the students to read Bible in LatinD. learning English is unnecessary if you have perfectly mastered Latin52.Which of the following statements is not true according to the text?A. ( Choose the best answer. ) ( 50 points ) ( 2 points each one )AOne of the qualities that most people admire in others is the willingness to admit one's mistakes. It is extremely hard sometimes to say a simple thing like "I was wrong about that," and it is even harder to say, "I was wrong , and you were right about that."I had an experience recently with someone admitting to me that he had made a mistake fifteen years ago. He told me he had been the manager of a certain grocery store in the neighborhood where I grew up, and he asked me if I remembered the egg cartons. Then he related an incident and I began to remember vaguely the incident he was describing.I was about eight years old at the time, and I had gone into the store with my mother to do the weekly grocery shopping. On that particular day, I must have found my way to the dairy food department where the incident took place. There must have been a special sale on eggs that day because there was an impressive display of eggs in dozen and half-dozen cartons. The cartons were stacked three or four feet high. I must have stopped in front of a display to admire the stacks. Just then a woman came by pushing her grocery cart and knocked off the stacks of cartons. For some reason, I decided it was up to me to put the display back together, so I want to work. The manager heard the noise and came rushing over to see what had happened. When he appeared, I was on my knees inspecting some of the cartons to see if any of the eggs were broken, but to him it looked as though I was the criminal. He severely reprimanded(严斥) me and wanted me to pay for any broken eggs. I protested my innocence and tried to explain, butit did no good. Even though I quickly forgot all about the incident, apparently the manager did not.27.How old was the author when he wrote this article?A. about 8B. about 18C. about 23D. about 1528.Who was to blame for knocking off the stacks of cartons?A .The author B. She always went there on Thursdays. It was a nice outing for an old woman who lived alone At six o'clock she came home, let herself in and at once smelt cigarette smoke. Cigarette smoke in her house? How? How? Had someone got in? She checked the back door and the windows. All were locked or fastened, as usual. There was no sign of forced entry.Over a cup of tea she wondered whether someone might have a key that fitted her front door-"a master key" perhaps. So she stayed at home the following Thursday. Nothing happened. Was anyone watching her movements? On the Thursday after that she went out at her usual time, dressed as usual, but she didn't go to the club. Instead she took a short cut home again, letting herself in through her garden and the back door. She settled down to wait.It was just after four o'clock when the front door bell rang. Mrs. Clarke was making a cup of tea at the time. The bell rang again, and then she heard her letter-box being pushed open. With the kettle of boiling water in her hand, she moved quietly towards the front door. A long piece of wire appeared through the letter-box, and then a hand. The wire turned and caught around the knob on the door-lock. Mrs. Clarke raised the kettle and poured the waterover the hand. There was a shout outside, and the skin seemed to drop off the fingers like a glove. The wire fell to the floor, the hand was pulled back, and Mrs. Clarke heard the sound of running feet.32.Mrs. Clarke looked forward to Thursday because____.A. she worked at a club on the dayB. she said visitors on ThursdaysC .she visited a club on Thursday D. a special visitor came on Thursday33.If someone had made a forced entry,____.A. Do you like yellow, orange, red? If you do, you must be an optimist, a leader, an active person who enjoys life, people and excitement. Do you prefer grays and blues? Then you are probably quiet, shy, and you would rather follow than lead. You tend to be a pessimist. At least, this is what psychologists tell us, and they should know, because they have been seriously studying the meaning of colors preference, as well as the effect that colors have on human beings. They tell us, among other facts, that we do not choose our favorite color as we grow up---we are born with our preference. If you happen to love brown, you did so, as soon as you opened your eyes, or at least as soon as you could see clearly.Colors do influence our moods----there is no doubt about it .A yellow room makes most people feel more cheerful and more relaxed than a dark green one; and a red dress brings warmth and cheer to the saddest winter day. On the other hand, black is depressing. A black bridge over the Thames River, near London, used to be the scene of more suicides than any other bridge in the area ----until it was repaint green. The number of suicide attemptsimmediately fell sharply; perhaps it would have fallen even more if the bridge had been done in pink or baby blue.Light and bright colors make people not only happier but more active. It is an established fact that factory workers work better, harder, and have fewer accidents when their machines are painted orange rather than black or gray.37."You would rather follow than red " means_____.A. You don't like to follow othersB. You would be a member rather than a leaderC. You would be afraid of following othersD. You would like to be a leader rather than a follower38.If one enjoys life, one is sure to prefer______.A. red to yellowB. blue to orangeC. red to gray B. blue to yellow39."They tell us, among other facts, that we don't choose our favorite colors as we grow up." "Among other facts " means______.A. besides other factsB. in regard to other factsC. not considering other factsD. according to other facts40.Which of the following is facts?A. People's preference of one color to another is instinctB. People's preference of one color to another is acquired as they grow up.C. More people happen to love brown because they saw something brown when they wereborn D. Colors have little influence on our moods41.Those who committed suicide preferred the bridge over the Thames River near London to others because of _______.A. its shapeB. its structureC. its colorD. its building materials( D )Arabs consider it extremely bad manners to start talking business immediately. Even the busiest government official or executive always takes extra time to be polite and offer refreshments. No matter how busy you are, you should make time for this hospitality. The ―conference visit‖ is a way of doing business throughout the Arab world. Frequently, you will have to discuss your business in the presence of strangers, who may or may not have anything to do with your business. Do not be surprised if your meeting is interrupted several times by people who come into the room unannounced, whisper, or speak softly to the person with whom you are talking, and leave. Act as though you do not hear, and never show displeasure at being interrupted.Making decisions quickly is not an Arab custom. There is vagueness in doing businessin the Middle East which will puzzle a newcomer. Give yourself lots of time and ask lots of questions.Patience is an important quality. You may have to wait two or three days to see high-level government officials as they are very busy. Give yourself enough time.Personal relationships are very important. They are the key to doing business in Arab countries. Try to identify the decision-maker regarding your product or service immediately and get to know him on a friendly basis. Do your homework. Be prepared to discuss details of your product or proposal. Be ready to answer technical questions.Familiarize yourself with the Moslem and national holidays. Avoid a visit during Ramadan, the Moslem month of fasting. Most Arab countries have a six-day workweek from Saturday through Thursday. When matched with the Monday to Friday practice in most Western countries, it leaves only three and a half workdays shared. Remember this in planning your appointments. Moslems do not eat pork. Some are strict about the religion’s prohibition against alcoholic beverages. If you are not sure, wait for your host to suggest the proper thing to drink. When an Arab says yes, he may mean ―maybe.‖When he says maybe, he probably means ―no.‖ You will seldom get a direct ―no‖ from an Arab because it is considered impolite. Also, he does not want to close his options. Instead of ―no,‖ he will say ―inshallah,‖ which means, ―if God is willing.‖ On the other hand, ―yes‖ does not necessarily mean ―yes.‖ A smile and a slow nod might seem like an agreement, but in fact, your host is being polite. An Arab considers it impolite to disagree with a guest.42. The main purpose of this article is to explain _____.A. why you need extra time when you visit Arab countriesB. how to be polite when doing business in the Arab worldC. why Arab officials are so busyD. how to be patient when being interrupted43. You look out the window while your host speak to a stranger.46. The author of this article has probably _____.A. never met any ArabsB. worked in the Arab worldC. had bad experiences in the Arab worldD. had good experiences in the Arab worldEAs we have seen, the focus of medical care in our society has been shifting from curing disease to preventing disease—especially in terms of changing our many unhealthy behaviors, such as poor eating habits, smoking, and failure to exercise. The line of thought involved in this shift can be pursued further. Imagine a person who is about the right weight, but does not eat very nutritious (有营养的) foods, who feels OK but exercises only occasionally, who goes to work every day, but is not an outstanding worker, who drinks a few beers at home most nights but does not drive while drunk, and who has no chest pains or abnormal blood counts, but sleeps a lot and often feels tired. This person is not ill. He may not even be at risk for any particular disease. But we can imagine that this person could be a lot healthier. The field of medicine has not traditionally distinguished between someone who is merely ―not ill‖ and someone who is in excellent health and pays attention to the body’s special needs. Both types have simply been called ―well.‖ In recent years, however, some health specialists ha ve begun to apply the terms ―well‖ and ―wellness‖ only to those who are actively striving to maintain and improve their health. People who are well are concerned with nutrition and exercise, and they make a point of monitoring their body’s condition. Most important, perhaps, people who are well take active responsibility for all matters related to their health. Even people who have a physical disease or handicap (缺陷) may be ―well,‖ in this new sense, if they make an effort to maintain the best possible health they can in the face of their physical limitations. ―Wellness‖ may perhaps best be viewed not as a state that people can achieve, but as an ideal that people can strive for. People who are well are likely to be better able to resist disease and to fight disease when it strikes. And by focusing attention on healthy ways of living, the concept of wellness can have a beneficial impact on the ways in which people face the challenges of daily life.47. Today medical care is placing more stress on ___.A. keeping people in a healthy physical conditionB. monitoring patients’ body functionsC. removing people’s bad living habitsD. ensuring people’s psychological well-being48. In the first paragraph, people are reminded that ___.A. good health is more than not being illB. drinking, even if not to excess, could be harmfulC. regular health checks are essential to keeping fitD. prevention is more difficult than cure49. Traditionally, a person is considered ―well‖ if he ___.A. does not have any unhealthy living habitsB. does not have any physical handicapsC. is able to handle his daily routinesD. is free from any kind of disease50. According to the author, the true meaning of ―wellness‖ is for people ___.A. to best satisfy their body’s specia l needsB. to strive to maintain the best possible healthC. to meet the strictest standards of bodily healthD. to keep a proper balance between work and leisure51. According to what the author advocates, which of the following groups of people wouldbe considered healthy?A. People who have strong muscles as well as slim figures.B. People who are not presently experiencing any symptoms of disease.C. People who try to be as possible, regardless of their limitations.D. It is equally true that, in studying the different wisdom of others, we learn how to think. More inq)ortant, peihaps, education teaches us to see the connections between things as well as see beyond our immedrate needs.I think Oscar Wide Md it right when he said that we ought to give our ability to our work but our genius to our lives.Lefs hope tlmt our educators answer the students' cries for profession education, but at the same time let's n^ke sure that the students are prepared for the day when they realize their mistake. Let us look briefly at the history of nmchines and their use in Victories. Before the year 1750 practically everything was made by craftsmen using hand tools. By 1800, some machines were in use and were driven by steam engines. After this, nmchines were steadily inqiroved and Victories sprang up all over England to n^ke the great variety of goods that are now available to us. However; all these 皿chines were for spec谊1 purposes. There were nmchines for unking cloth,皿chines for nuking shoes and 皿chines for canning food. An improvement in food canning methods, for e)mnq)le, did not affect the Victories producing the other things. The great difference in the case of the con^iuter is tlmt as it is concerned with the office work, it affects every conq)an^ no nMitter wlmt it nmkes. This is why the introduction of conqmters is called the Con^uter Revolution. If conqmters can do the office work so well, does it mean that the clerks will all lose their jobs? In fiiture there will be fiir fewer jobs for clerks, as such, but this does not mean tlmt nmny cleiks will be dismissed from their jobs. There are three reasons for this. The first is that a large amount of clerical work is done by women. There are either girls who will probably marry or else married women who came back to work for a few years. Women are constant以leaving the conq)an^ and in norn^il conditions, replacements would Mve to be found. When the conqiuter is brought into the office, it merely means tlmt fewer new girls need be taken on. The second reason is tlmt the conqianies which buy conqiuters will probable be e?q)andmg, so the clerks can be moved to fill new vacancies. The third reason is tlmt a hrge number of jobs will become available in connection with the conqiuters, and clerks are suitable for nmny of them.Once the conqmter is accepted as a nomml part ofthe conqiany's organization, there will be many clrnnges. The activities ofthe conq)any will be arranged so that all the details are sent directly to the conqmter. In this wa» the conqmter will contain up-to-date knowledge ofthe conqiany's a 鱼irs and this knowledge will be available to the nmnagers at any time, merely by nuking the conqmter print out the required infom^ition. Many of the conqiany's records, which are now kept in filing cabinets, will in fiiture be kept on reels of nmgnetic tape. It is in these cringes within the conqiany's organization that the conqiuter will cause a revolution. All the indications are tlmt conqiuters will not cause very much unemployment.71.The expression "practically everything" in Line 2 of Paragraph 1 means .A. absolutely everythingB. almost everythingC.hardly anythingD. almost nothing72.According to the writer there was a rapid increase in the use of nmchinesA. before 1750B. in 1800C.between 1750 and 1800D. after 180073.The nmin idea ofthe first paragraph is that .A.皿chines came into general use after 1800B.there was an inqjrovement in fbod-catming methods after 1800C.皿chines in general inqiroved during the nineteenth centuryD.unlike in軍rovements in nmchiner* the introduction of the conqmter willaffect every conqiany74.In the writer's opinion, the introduction of computers will mean tlmt .A.there will be more clerical jobsB.there will be fewer clerical jobsC.nMiny clerks will lose their jobsD.the total number ofjobs will be increased75.The writer says the biggest dmnge produced by the introduction of conqmters willbe tlmt .A.conq)anies will increasingly dismiss their workersB.conq)anies will become snmllerC.conq)anies will be expanded day after dayD.the up-to-date knowledge will be available to nmnagersV lyanslatlon (15%)Directions: Translate the following sentences from Chinese into English or vice versa vrith the possible words or phrases given in the bracket (one point for each o/- the Chmese-English translation and 10 points for English- Chinese translation). 76. 我认为即使我们每一分钱都节省下来,我们也买不起这幢房子。

Speakers take turns frequently, often after only a few sentences have been spoken. “Watching a conversation between two Americans is like watching a table tennis game,” a British observer said. “Your head goes back and forth and back and forth so fast it almost makes your neck hurt.”Americans tend to be impatient with people who take long turns. Such people are said to “talk too much.” Many Americans have difficulty paying attention to someone who speaks more than a few sentences at a time, as Nigerians, Arabs, and some others do. Americans admire conciseness, or wha t they call “getting to the point.”Americans engage in little ritual interaction (礼仪式的交流). Only a few ritual greetings are common: “How are you?” “I‟m fine, thank you,” “Nice to meet you,” and “Hope to see you again.” These things are said in certain situ ations Americans learn to recognize, and, like any ritual greetings, are concerned more with form than with substance. That is, the questions are supposed to be asked and the statements are supposed to be made in particular situations, no matter what the people involved are feeling or what they really have in mind. In many American‟s opinions, people who rely heavily on ritual greetings are “too shy” or “too polite,” unwilling to reveal their true natures and ideas.Americans are generally impatient with lo ng ritual greetings about family members‟health—common among Latin Americans—considering them a waste of time.26.During a typical conversation between Americans, people try to be ________.a. politeb. interestedc. concised. friendly27. By comparing a conversation between two Americans to a table tennis game, the British observer means that _________.a. Americans like to take short turns in a conversationb. Americans enjoy talking as well as watching a table tennis gamec. Americans get excited easilyd. Americans talk with great expression28. Americans ___________ when they talk with Arabs.a. may lose their patienceb. have to listen very carefullyc. talk too muchd. never use English29. In the United States, ritual greetings __________.a. are very common in people‟s conversationsb. are suitable in all situationsc. help to lead to a serious conversationd. have little substance30. According to this passage, Americans have a low opinion of people who ____________.a.. do not talk muchb. do not pay attention to the speakerc. like to ask about other people‟s healthd. bring too many ritual greetings into a conversationPassage 2Ask most American children what they want to be when they grow up, and they probably will say “doctor” or “lawyer.”Though our culture, our economy, indeed our very security are heavily dependent on science and engineering, only 12 percent of American high school students graduate with the prerequisites(必要条件) for a career in science or engineering. Worse yet, only 6 percent of minority children are said to be so prepared.Don‟t be too surprised. If you ask further why the majority of the high school students would choose a career in medicine or law, the answers will be straight out of some popular TV shows.“Doctors help people. They save lives.” “Lawyers beat the bad guys.” Most students would say. Now, how about science or engineering as a career choice? The answers will be just as predictable: “Get real! Who wa n ts to be a geek? They all are nerds. Besides, I hate math.”In our media, scientists and engineers typically are portrayed as introverted(内向的) and humorless. They always wear white lab coats, with a collection of pencils in their pocket protectors. They wear glasses with black plastic frames. If more students are to choose technical careers, they must have a better view presented to them. They need to be told, for instance, that the invention of lifesaving equipment saves lives just as surely as the application of it in the hospital. It also might help if someone emphasized to students that the lawyer who saved the defendant(被告) by introducing the DNA evidence would have seen him hanged had it not been for the scientists who discovered DNA.Whatever we do, until students stop thinking of the term “engineer” as a synonym for “geek,” it is impossible to expect our children to change their views towards scientists and engineers.31. What is the problem with most American children when they choose their careers?a. They have a very low opinion of science and engineering.b. They are too anxious to succeed in different fields.c. They are not sure what career suits them best.d. They do not have enough confidence in themselves.32. Which of the following has influenced American students greatly in their choice of their careers?a. Parents‟ opinions.b. TV shows and various publications.c. Great discoveries made by doctors and lawyers.d. Culture and economy.33. In the passage, the writer criticizes the media for ___________.a. depicting scientists and engineers as nerds and geeksb. creating too much violence in the societyc. failing to report the great achievements made by scientistsd. using words like “nerd” and “geek” inappropriately34. In order to change the students‟ view towards scientists and engineers, the writer suggests that _________.a. teachers reconsider their way of teaching mathematicsb. students be told about the wonders of science and engineeringc. scientists and engineers change their images a little bitd. the media stop praising doctors and lawyers excessively35. Judging from what is said in the passage, the writer obviously believes that _________.a. scientists and engineers are more important than doctors and lawyersb. science and engineering have been dangerously ignoredc. American children are hopelessd. there are too many scientists and engineers nowadaysPassage 3Reaching new peaks of popularity in North America is Iceberg Water, which is harvested from icebergs off the coast of Newfoundland, Canada.Arthur von Wiesenberger, who carries the title Water Master, is one of the few water critics in North America. As a boy, he spent time in the larger cities of Italy, France and Switzerland, where bottled water is consumed daily. Even then, he kept a water journal, noting the brands he liked best. “My dog could tell the difference between bottled and tap water,” He says. But is plain tap water all that bad? Not at all. In fact, New York‟s municipal water for more than a century was called the champagne of tap water and until recently considered among the best in the world in terms of both taste and purity. Similarly, a magazine in England found that tap water from the Thames River tasted better than several leading brands of bottled water that were 400 times more expensive.Nevertheless, soft-drink companies view bottled water as the next battle-ground for market share—this despite the fact that over 25 percent of bottled water comes from tap water: PepsiCo‟s Aquafina and Coca-Cola‟s Dasani are both purified tap water rather than spring water. As diners thirst for leading brands, bottlers and restaurateurs salivate (垂涎) over the profits.A restaurant‟s typical mark-up on wine is 100 to 150 percent, whereas on bottled water it‟s often 300 to 500 percent. But since water is much cheaper than wine, and many of the fancier brands aren‟t available in stores, most diners don‟t notice or care.As a result, some restaurants are turning up the pressure to sell bottled water. According to an article in The Street Journal, some of the more shameless tactics include placing attractive bottles on the table for a visual sell, listing brands on the menu without prices, and pouring bottled water without even asking the diners if they want it.Regardless of how it‟s sold, the popularity of bottled water taps into our desire for b etter health, our wish to appear cultivated, and even a longing for lost purity.36. What do we know about Iceberg Water from the passage?a. It is a kind of iced water.b. It is just plain tap water.c. It is a kind of bottled water.d. It is a kind of mineral water.37. By saying “My dog could tell the difference between bottled and tap water” (Para. 2), von Wiesenberger wants to convey the message that ________.a. plain tap water is certainly unfit for drinkingb. bottled water is clearly superior to tap waterc. bottled water often appeals more to dogs tasted. dogs can usually detect a fine difference in taste38. The “fancier brands” (Para. 5) refers to ________.a. tap water from the Thames Riverb. famous wines not sold in ordinary storesc. PepsiCo‟s Aqu afina and Coca-Cola‟s Dasanid. expensive bottled water with impressive names39. Why are some restaurants turning up the pressure to sell bottled water?a. Bottled water brings in huge profits.b. Competition from the wine industry is intense.c. Most diners find bottled water affordable.d. Bottled water satisfied diners‟ desire to fashionable.40. According to passage, why is bottled water so popular?a. It is much cheaper than wine.b. It is considered healthier.c. It appeals to more cultivated people.d. The field of medicine has not traditionally distinguished between someone who is merely “not ill” and someone who is in excellent health and pays attention to the body‟s special needs. Both types have simply been called “well.” In recent years, however, some health specialists have begun to apply the terms “well” and “wellness” only to those who are actively striving to maintain and improve their health. People who are well are concerned with nutrition and exercise, and they make a point of monitoring their body‟s condition. Most important, perhaps, people who are well take active responsibility for all matters related to their health. Even people who have a physical disease or handicap (缺陷) may be “well,” in this new sense, if they make an effort to maintain the best possible health they can in the face of their physical limitations. “Wellness” may perhaps best be viewed not as a state that people can achieve, but as an ideal that people can strive for. People who are well are likely to be better able to resist disease and to fight disease when it strikes. And by focusing attention on healthy ways of living, the concept of wellness can have a beneficial impact on the ways in which people face the challenges of daily life.41.
