Table manners in France
J: Hello, everyonethe TV program that you are choosing is channel
V, welcome to our show—Talk About Yourself .you know ,different
countries have different manners, so today, we are talking about
the manners of the world.
J: Let’s welcome our members today-Peter,Tiantian,Angle and so
on…
First of all, let’s talk about the manners in France. hello,,do
you remember that we learned the manners in our English class
I still believe that table manners in France are strange. People
have to eat anything with forks and knives. Could you please tell
us more about the rules when we are eating meals in France
M1: If you are invited to a French house for dinner, first of all ,
you have to be there on time. If you are even ten minutes late,
you should call to explain. While eating , you should hold the
fork in the left hand and the knife in the right hand. If you
haven’t finished eating, cross your knife and fork on your
plate with the fork over the knife.
J:ok. i think we should obey the rules. and if we want to go to
our friend’ s home for dinner, what rules should we keep M1: you should send flowers on the morning of the day when you are
invited so that they can be displayed that evening. You are
supposed to dress well.
J: oh yes,I know a little French. I especially love flowers, and
French people want to keep their house very beautiful. I want
to know something we should pay attention to as well.
M1: Don’t begin eating until the hostess says “ bon appétit”.
You’re not supposed to put your bread on your plate you’re
supposed to put it on the table. It’s rude to put your hands
in your lap. You should keep your hands but not your elbows on
the table. You should finish everything on your plate.
J: we have learnt the manners of France, and we know their manners
are different from those in our country. If we don’t know them,
we could make mistakes, for instance,we usually eat fruit
without cutting first, but in France it is wrong, and we aren’t
used to putting the food on the table.
Table manners in Britain
J: as we all know , Englishmen are very famous for their politeness.
and ,just tell us what you know.
M4: In Britain , if you go to a formal meal, you should keep the
fork in the left hand and the knife in the right all the time. You should eat with your mouth closed. You can’t let any of the food
fall off the plate. You should use the knife only for cutting. You
can’t take the food across the table. You shouldn’t scrape the
plate. While eating , you should keep your elbows off the table.
You should put your napkin on your lap. Remember never speak with
your mouth full. You are supposed to cutlery from the outside to
the inside.
Table manners in the USA
J:as we know, the USA is a relaxing place to have fun,but there have
lots of manners or not let’s listen to the ,he will give us a
great answer.
M5:
Most Americans
enjoy entertaining at home, but they don't enjoy
formal dinners.
M6: Before arriving at your host's home, you may want to make sure
of three things. First, be a few minutes late, about five to
ten minutes if possible. Never be early, as the host may not
have everything prepared yet. you shouldn’t be more than 20
minutes late ,either. Your host may begin to worry about whether
you are able to attend the dinner or not. J:oh yeah, may in westen countries ,people are used to inviting their
friends to their home, but everyone should be a bit late.it means
that you know the manners, but in easten countries it is very
important to be on time,if you bring a gift to the host is best.
Could you please tell us what should we do if we are invited
to our friends’house in the USA
M5: , it is not necessary to bring a gift in most informal gatherings,.
If you like, you can bring some fruit or sweets, or, some flowers
for the hostess. These are thoughtful gifts. Do not bring
alcoholic beverages. Above all, do not spend a lot of money,
and never give money. As we say in English, "It's the thought
that counts you should wear comfortable clothing as well.
J: it is thought that counts, therefore, everyone should know what
things the host needs, and when you are eatting food, maybe there are
different rules from the following courtries, let’s listen to
M6: Your host in his home will usually tell you where to sit. At
formal gatherings, name cards are sometimes provided, or you will
be told where to sit.
When you are having soup, make the least noises. And you mustn’t
pick up your soup bowl so as to drink away the last drops of your
soup.
